There is only one thing worse than being born a Patron of the Divine; being branded Null & Void.
Absent of a Gift.
After enduring a life of servitude, Mika, retired assassin and Null, thought she would live out her days alone
But, once an assassin, always an assassin.

When Mika is sold as a slave—a fate she was promised would never be hers—hope for a solitary life is lost. Now destined for an impossible rescue in a foreign land, her only chance for survival is to fight the destructive rage simmering beneath her skin and learn to trust those around her.
As trust deepens on the journey and a charming new companion fights for her heart, Mika is forced to face the truth of who she is. In the end, she must choose to embrace it or let the rage win, and risk losing it all.

Null & Void is the first book in a new series featuring a harsh fantasy world, political intrigue, and a morally grey heroine caught in the middle.

R. Moody is a dreamer, one that first followed her head with numbers before her heart for stories.

An accountant for a Not-For-Profit in youth mental health, Rae spends her free time reading, writing, or researching her next fantasy romance novel to get lost in. once an assassin, always an assassin.

i’d been looking forward to null & void so much after seeing all of the positive reviews on bookstagram. truthfully, i almost dnf’d this (never trust booktok/bookstagram). i wouldn’t call this book terrible, but you won’t see me rushing to recommend it. the overall concept is interesting and with some much needed removal of the fluffier content and refining the execution, i think this story could’ve really delivered 4+ stars!

“firecat, he purrs. “i would never force you to do anything you didn’t want to do. if ٳ’s any joy to be had, i want you to give it to me with enthusiasm.

mika, retired assassin
we’re introduced to our main character, mika, a null (someone who’s gift-less) and retired assassin who’s full of feminine rage. escaping a history of past abuse—both verbal and sexual—mika finds herself being sold to another kingdom, in exchange for her services in locating a missing princess. from here on, we’re introduced to her new found family consisting of tovi, riley, beans and bitty who are all gifted (not sure about riley, as we don’t know much).

“it’s a lovely name, aurelius.
“you might think you’re mocking me, firecat, but i like the idea of my name on your lips.

riley, alcoholic extraordinaire
i will mention that it is refreshing having a love interest and male main character that ’t dark and brooding, or stoic and blonde. riley’s a redhead! he’s also a soft and warm cinnamon roll kind of hero, rather than your standard cold and mean morally grey or villainous character. he shows a level of kindness and support towards mika that she’s unaccustomed to receiving. someone needs to admit this man into therapy however because his alcoholism is insane and he has unresolved trauma.

“i’d almost risk it. for one taste. he leans closer, and closer. “but i’ll wait, he says to the place where the corner of my lips meets my cheek. his lips brush my skin as he speaks, “it’ll be worth it.

mika + riley
mika and riley have an unnecessary slow burn hate-to-love romance. i’m not a fan of characters who are mean for the sake of pushing the love interest away because “they shouldn’t be together”—this ’t a forbidden romance, so why the fuck? the repetitiveness became tiresome and eventually made me disinterested in the romance aspect of this book. i understand mika’s rage during combat, or when she’s feeling negative emotions but when she’s with riley? i’m sure ٳ’s an explanation for this; we just weren’t told it.

“the necklace is a gift and a promise. i promise i’ll keep trying to be the man deserving of your heart until the day mine stops beating. longer, if the divine allows it.

the beginning was somewhat difficult to navigate for numerous reasons. i found the writing was awfully juvenile, especially in what is supposed to be a dark fantasy romance and sometimes modern in word choice: it’s easier to ride a horse or fight when your breasts aren’t jiggling about. not that ٳ’s much to jiggle on me. i expect this kind of language in an immature high school romance, not from someone who’s supposed to be mid-twenties and hardened by life.

ٳ’s so much travelling through various cities, small towns and the desert, it was detailed but endless exploration with not much action furthering the narrative. the world of sunyanile is vast and expansive (you can view the most stunning map on the author’s website to visualise the enormous amount of detail), we actually haven’t done much to explore the kingdom. i trust this means the world will continue to unfold in the following books; i wish it will be with some refinement in the sequels.

during the characters travels, the author went into too much detail on what they were cooking (mika happens to be a foodie), or the sparring matches. neither added much advancement to the narrative and was more fluffier downtime. i don’t need to know how she made the stew!! i appreciate the “feminine rage aspect the author was leaning towards but ٳ’s zero reason to include “rage over 100 times, it’s criminally insane and starts to become ridiculous!!

some tropes featured in this include:
˚₊‧⁺˖ assassin fmc x cinnamon roll mmc
˖⁺‧₊˚ a found family (my favourite!!!)
˚₊‧⁺˖ forced proximity, including one bed
˖⁺‧₊˚ hate to love romance with some slow burn
˚₊‧⁺˖ hidden identity and an unexpected betrayal
˖⁺‧₊˚ lgbtqia+ cast and diverse representation

anyway, i will continue to read this series. i’m awfully curious to know what the next book will explore, especially after those last few book-gripping chapters!!

"Once an assassin, always an assassin."

THAT ENDING!! The last 40 pages were full of chaos (in a good way) and a giant twist that I didn't see coming.

The beginning was a bit hard to get through, especially the first 160 pages, but I'm so glad I stuck with it, this was amazing!

We follow Mika, also known as the now-retired Silent Assassin, who is a Null or someone who doesn't have a 'power'. Believing she has escaped her past, Mika is soon sold to another kingdom to help locate and rescue their missing princess. She embarks on this journey with one of the best motley crews I’ve ever read: Beans, Riley, Bitty, and Tovi. I loved the found family aspect of this! There were so many great moments during their travels that will put a smile on your face! At first, I thought there were too many characters, but it was easy to follow, they are all amazing and have their own loveable personalities.

There was so much sexual tension in this omg, I just LOVED the chemistry between Mika & Riley!

-fmc is an assassin, though at first, she doesn’t come across as one and seems more childish than a strong assassin character. However, she has moments where her strength as an assassin shines through, which is quite intriguing. The second half of the book definitely highlights her redeeming qualities.

-the beginning of them traveling felt like a drag but quickly got more interesting as I read on

“I’d almost risk it. For one taste. He leans closer, and closer. “But I’ll wait, he says to the place where the corner of my lips meets my cheek. His lips brush my skin as he speaks. “It’ll be worth it.

I cant wait for book 2!!

Once an assassin, always an assassin.

We have a pronunciation guide, a glossary, the most stunning map in existence & content warnings that sound like the shopping list to make a great book.

The prelude. What a way to open!

I don’t know what words I can use to explain how phenomenal this book truly is.

I will be honest with you, I felt a whole lot of emotions. I giggled, I was teary eyes, I was angry, I was laughing, I was sobbing, I was kicking my feet.

R. Moody has created such a gorgeous book, I fell in love with the characters, the different settings, the friendships and obviously the food (sorry I cannot get over how good all the food sounded). There are definitely parts that emotionally wrecked me.

The nightmares. These were emotional. These were the moments I needed to put the book down, close my eyes and take a breath. These were heavy, but written in a sensitive and delicate manner where you could understand their purpose in the story without it being severely jarring.

The nickname. Did I highlight every time it was said. Yes. Yes I did.

I loved feeling like I was travelling alongside Mika and discover different parts of Sunyanile. I also really enjoyed learning about the rules, laws, and history of the nation as the story unfolded.

That ending !!!!!!!! Sorry. Can I have book 2, like now? Please 🙏

Also would not be opposed to some recipes. This had me craving stew and pies !

Let’s start with the positives:
The cover is pretty

Everything else was terrible. The plot and writing was incredibly juvenile, it was too fast paced and yet nothing was actually happening..

The Fmc was supposed to be some deadly assassin but was also a nanny? Huh? Her character was just all over the place and felt like a wannabe Aelin.

The love interest, Riley, dear god one of my old socks has more personality than this character.

Everyone was else was just so wishy washy, i was incredibly bored, everyone could have been killed off and I honestly wouldn’t have cared.

I just could not take this book seriously.

You do you, but I don’t recommend this one💫

5⭐️ 1🌶
Null & Void takes you on a physical and emotional adventure as you journey with Mika and a motley found family crew across foreign lands steeped with danger and action, beautifully written settings, great banter, mystery, political intrigue, and phenomenal LGBTQ+ rep and cast.

The plot is great, full of depth and mystery with a well executed big twist. There are shocking reveals and "smaller" twists that are good, too, but THE one is just chef's kiss!

The characters are amazing. All of the MCs are well developed, complex, full of nuance and depth. I want nothing more than to give all the cast a "classic Bitty slam-hug."

I love that the cast is diverse in all ways. While I myself am not non-binary, I feel Moody did an amazing job writing a NB character. I hope that one day soon a diverse in all ways cast is commonplace.

Moody did a great job with world building. I can't wait to see even more of it. Magic system is well explained. The settings are described so well, encompassing all of your scenes, that it was a joy to imagine. You feel like you're right there with them, physically and emotionally.

The pacing is great, I couldn't put it down. That ending - I both love and hate Moody currently. Book 2 can't come out soon enough.

Moody's prose is so good. She walks the fine line between descriptive and purple prose like a pro (even though this is her debut).

Dialogue is great, it feels natural and flows well. There are a number of scenes that made me chuckle, a couple that had me tearing up, and some that had me spitting mad (for the cast).

I love that this book examines important topics like slavery, racism, xenophobia, etc.

I love the nicknames in this book, especially Daddy Beans and Firecat. I love that it comes with a gorgeous, detailed map and a pronunciation guide.

The found family in Null & Void might be my favorite found family in literature.

I don't love that the FMC is mentioned as being so small a number of times. I would love if that wasn't so common in lit.

Patron of the Divine (or just the Divine, maybe) could've used a bit more explanation, in my opinion. Maybe I missed it, or the 🙀 ending made me forget.

If you like Fantasy with some Romance, give this one a try. Spice-wise, 1🌶

If you like Daughter of No Worlds, Gild, or Graceling, you would probably enjoy Null & Void.

Go add R. Moody's debut novel to your TBR - you don't want to miss this one.

Please check the author's site for TWs prior to reading.

I was fortunate enough to read an eARC of this from the author. This is my unbiased review. Thank you for allowing me to read this absolute gem early, @rmoodyauthor

“Once an assassin, always an assassin.

I am extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to read this before it is released into the world.

Null & Void introduces us to a large and beautifully imagined world brimming with kingdom politics and a complex history. However, Rae’s storytelling makes this incredibly easy to consume and will leave you ravenous for more.

The leading lady, Mika, is about as badass as it gets with an extremely troubled past. Experiencing the world from her point of view adds a wonderful layer of complexity to the narrative that will have you second-guessing everything you know along the way.

One of the things I love most about this story is the time and passion that has gone into developing the cast of characters. Each one is beautifully distinct, nuanced, and has a story of their own to tell. The banter, the personalities, the interactions; all of this makes it incredibly easy to fall in love with each of them.

To put it simply, Null & Void will have you in tears. Either from laughter, pain, or frustration. So, prepare yourselves for some wonderful emotional turmoil.

Congratulations, Rae. I cannot wait to find out where this story takes us.

Boy oh boy do I have a book rec for you.

Thank you to R. Moody for allowing me to be apart of your street team and to have received an early advanced reader copy.

“Once an assassin, always an assassin

Mika, our main character has got to be one of my favorite characters I’ve ever read in a fantasy novel. Our girl is a foodie and I love her. She is so relatable (for an assassin), and I actually laughed out loud so many times reading her interactions with the rest of the crew in this book.

The found family is tremendous, I truly enjoyed their dynamic, the nicknames and the interactions amongst them all.

If you want a book full of feminine rage, an adventure through a new world, some romance (ooo), twists and turns, oh and of course some tears. Read this when it comes out in August!!

I have been suffering with a book slump for too long, but now - thanks to this baby - IM BACK.

I’ve had this book since I was given an ARC and I was so far behind in my ARCs I hadn’t had a chance to properly get into it until this month.

This book had adventure, romance, BETRAYAL!!! (Still screaming) and I was literally cackling laughing throughout.

I’m obsessed with Mika and although I wasn’t sure of Riley at the beginning - by midway through I NEEDED MORE.

Mika and her love for food is also an all time favourite of mine x

Thank you R Moody, for being patient with my review & for producing this bloody brilliant book 🖤🖤

Loved it!

I really loved this story. A solid 4-1/2 stars for me, rounded up to 5. I am obsessed with Riley. I need more from/about Mika's rage. I love the found family characters in this story.

Well crafted and really well balanced between emotions, plot, character building, relationship building, spice, and a plot that kept me interested the entire time. I'm really looking forward to the next book.

Let me start my review by asking: how is this a debut novel? Honestly, I am flabbergasted. Null And Void, Book 1 in the Patrons of the Divine series by R. Moody, is the book that introduces us to Mika, a retired assassin and her rather colourful found family while we embark on a mission to save a missing princess. Simple enough? I'd say anything but. The layers, the plot, the lore, and the intricate world-building mixed with masterfully crafted characters offer such a deep and meaningful fantasy story; a story I have fully immersed myself in, made it a part of my personality, and now I am here, sitting and waiting for the sequel. Null And Void is being released to the world on August 15th, so mark your calendars and be ready for this adventure!

If I could compare this story to others I love, the first one that comes to mind is the Bornbane series by I. A. Takerian. There is something about the found family trope, one elevated to a higher level. A found family that is so imperfect yet perfect at the same time. Everyone carries something within themselves and fights their battles, but they come together as one. They laugh, banter, and joke but deeply care for each other and will do anything for one another, even when someone strays. Mika had never imagined finding herself surrounded by such love and devotion, yet here she is, learning to deal with it and slowly accepting and admitting her worth.

The central part of the story involves the group travelling and planning to find and rescue the missing princess. Will they succeed? Once you get to know all of them, I am sure you will love them and root for them as much as I do. Mika, the retired assassin, a character so broken and filled with rage, unaccustomed to feeling worthy and accepted. Her story is forever changed when she bands with the group, and I loved seeing her walls slowly crumble, especially where Riley is concerned. Oh, Riley... Numbing his days away with alcohol while trying to process his grief and deal with his inner demons. Well, his world will also be shaken to the core once a fiery assassin joins their mission. The angst and the banter between the two of them were so swoony and heartwrenching at the same time. Still, they are not alone. There is Beans, a warrior, a giant of man, and a character with a heart made of gold. His fatherly figure was just what the others needed. Bitty, the perfect addition to the rescue party and a character you can't but fall in love with and want to cherish and protect him at all costs. And finally, Tova... Chased by her own demons and heartbreaking past.

They will face so many difficulties and obstacles, as well as horrifying and life-threatening situations on the road. But they will face them together and will do all that it takes to find the missing princess and bring her home.

Null And Void is a fantasy story you must experience; I loved being Rae's ARC reader and can only hope I will continue being part of her story, too.

Null And Void will gift you
- deep world-building and lore
- powerplay and political intrigue
- unique magic system
- exploitation of those having magical abilities
- female rage
- morally grey characters
- found family
- rescue party
- perfect banter
- slow-burn
- trauma and trauma healing
- one bed / one horse
and so, so, so much more!

Null & Void is one of those rare gems that pulls you in from the very first page and refuses to let go. The cover itself radiates the raw emotion contained within this story, and it perfectly mirrors the journey of our main character, Mika—a young woman who has been betrayed, used, and cast aside by a world that should have protected her. She and her broken stray-cat-like self will forever live in my heart.

The writing style also makes this debut novel stand out. It feels like you’re inside Mika’s head, experiencing every thought, every emotion, every doubt, and every flicker of hope she has as she navigates through her tumultuous life. The story initially unfolds almost like a slice of life, with Mika and her companions traveling together, but the pacing and action are much quicker, making it impossible to put down. And darkness lurks in these pages - make sure you check your trigger warnings on the author's website.

The found family dynamics are beautifully crafted, resonating deeply with anyone who has ever found solace in friendships that feel more like family. Mika’s relationship with Riley is everything—top-tier romance that is both heartwarming and heartwrenching. These characters are broken and vulnerable, yet they are fiercely protective of one another, and that bond is the beating heart of the story. But it’s the emotional depth of this book that truly sets it apart. You feel every ounce of Mika’s pain, her rage, and her desperate hope for something better. The romance is beautifully developed, with moments that will make your heart ache in the best way possible.

The world-building is intriguing, with a harsh, kind of grimdark fantasy feel. The political intrigue and plot are complex and the morally grey characters keep you constantly questioning their motivations, making the story all the more compelling.

This is an absolutely phenomenal debut. It’s packed with fascinating world-building, deeply flawed and complex characters, and a story that will leave you begging for the next book. If you’re a fan of intense, emotionally charged fantasy with a strong focus on character development and relationships, this is a must-read. I’m already desperate for the sequel—this series is going to be something truly special.

Thanks to the author and R&R Booktours for the opportunity to read a review. This review is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and it is voluntary. All opinions are my own.

✨Null & Void

What an incredible adventure; I had such a good time exploring the wonderful cast of R. Moody.

In Null & Void, we get to follow Mika (aka the currently retired Silent Assassin) who is a Null or “powerless. Thinking she is free from her past, Mika soon finds herself sold to another kingdom to assist them in locating and rescuing their missing princess. Mika embarks on this journey with one of the best motley crews I’ve ever read: Beans, Riley, Bitty, and Tovi. This is probably one of the most hilarious and realistic found families I’ve come across and they brought me such immense joy. Not to mention being in Mika’s head was so funny. I’ve honestly never been so entertained reading of a character’s travels. And most of this book is traveling, so be prepared to giggle, swoon, and fret.

The characters in N&V are top notch. I love how assertive Mika is. She is broken and angry and fighting a past that is honestly horrifying. But she still remains so loving- even when she tries not to be. Beans is the big brother. The gentle giant. The glue. Bitty is sweet and innocent. Tovi is cunning and sassy. And Riley, oh Riley. He has so many shades and they’re all so neat to see. A giant burnt cinnamon roll and one of the VERY FEW red haired MMCs!

There’s so many emotions whittled deeply into these pages. I’m eager to move forward with Mika and see how/if she gets to heal. Her past is traumatizing and she is thrown through the wringer relentlessly. Plot twists. Betrayals. Hidden identities. Hate to love. It’s all so delicious between these pages. Don’t miss out on the first installment of this series. It’s too good to pass up.

Tropes you may find in N&V are found family, red haired cinnamon roll mmc, diverse rep, all the feminine rage, multiple morally grey characters, hidden identities, one horse/one bed, cave scene, unique magic system, interesting world building, great banter, slow burn, forced proximity, “who did this to you, spice 3/5, and that ending!!! 🫣🫣

Thank you so much, Moody, for gifting me this arc. It was such a pleasure and I’m here until the end!!

Omg this book was so good 😭 I can’t believe that ending, I’m literally shook.

This is a debut novel and it is phenomenal! The world is so unique and the world building was so well done and easy to follow. There is also a glossary but I didn’t find I needed to reference it constantly, I could follow along well.

I’m not going to lie, this book made me cry multiple times so that’s basically an instant five star read for me.

The main character, Mika, is such a badass but she has demons and a constant rage within herself that she is battling. The mental health rep in this book is so real. I loved watching Mika as she went from someone who preferred isolation to slowly opening up to others and forming her own found family.

Riley, the MMC, also has his own demons. He is a golden retriever type and I wasn’t sure what to think of him at first. He seemed a bit goofy but once you get to know him more you find his character has a lot more depth. The slow burn in this one is soooo goood. We have all the best slow burn tropes: forced proximity, one horse, one bed need I say more?? The push and pull is so good and Mika has a hard time opening up her heart (with good reason). Their dynamic gave me all the feels.

This book is also fast paced and ٳ’s plenty of action. The last 15% is wild and I cannot wait for the next one! I predict this one is gonna blow up!

✨️ Forced proximity
💜 Hate to love
✨️ Feminine rage
💜 Found family
✨️ LGBTQ+ cast & diverse rep
💜 Morally grey FMC
✨️ Cinnamon roll MMC
💜 Hidden identity
✨️ Reluctant hero/heroine
💜 Court politics/political intrigue

I really loved this book and I'm so happy the author chose me to be on her ARC team! The descriptions of the world, the food (seriously droolworthy it always sounded so good), the people... they were all so beautiful and even with it being 100% a fantasy world I could truly envision the world through Mika's eyes. The magic system was also interesting and it was a fun change to see the main characters be so strong even though their magical abilities are considered "junk" in their world. It sucked me in!!

Mika is a badass assassin who has experienced a ton of trauma but she's so strong and resilient. (Definitely check trigger warnings.) The found family dynamic she finds herself in was so heartwarming and seeing Mika learn to love and let people in was also so well done. I loved every one of the characters and loved the LGBTQ rep. There were parts of the book that wrecked me emotionally in the best way, especially between Mika and Riley as she struggles with her attraction and feelings for him.

I'm so sad it ended on a cliffhanger and will be (im)patiently waiting for book 2! I can't wait to see what happens next!!

If feminine rage were a book.

Null & Void is a debut dark romantasy that follows Mika, a retired assassin. She's forced to go on an impossible rescue mission despite being told that she wouldn't have to do this type of work again.

I LOVED Mika. She's sarcastic, full of rage and a giant foodie. Recently I asked people what they wanted to see more of in romantasy books and the top answer was older FMCs. Mika is in her late 20s! She's also so relatable, my favourite quote being "...gives me privacy so I can wash my hair, and I'm a new person. Well, I'm still full of rage and slightly unhinged, but at least I'm clean".

This book is also somehow super cosy despite it being dark. I swear every time I opened it up I started eating because the descriptions of food were 🤌.

There are so many things I could write about in this book that I loved. The LGBTQIA+ rep, the pacing, the found family, the fact that it was the perfect mix of plot and romance.

Overall this is a fantastic debut novel and I would definitely recommend it!

Some notes I had in no particular order:
🩷 Has anybody successfully sent an author their therapy bill for leaving them on a cliffhanger? Asking for a friend 🥲
🩷 Counting down the days until Daddy Beans can make me beans
🩷 "You might think you're mocking me, Firecat, but I like the idea of my name on your lips" 😍😍
🩷 "F*cked up doesn't even begin to describe me". Same girl.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you SO much to R. Moody for a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I just really couldn't get into this one. It felt like the book was more in her head than anything else so it made it difficult for me to connect to anyone else. It felt rushed in certain parts which added to that feeling. A great book, just not for me.

I had the absolute pleasure of alpha reading Null & Void late last year and was able to ARC read it now
Seeing how far this book has come from a first draft until now absolutely astounds me
The story has remained the same, just with some polishing and fine tuning of the details

Despite knowing things were coming in this book due to my alpha read, I was still gutted the second time around (justice for [redacted])

The way R. Moody writes her characters has you laughing and then crying on the same page. She has written incredibly imperfect characters that me (and probably most people) can relate to on some level (Except you [redacted], fuck you)

I cannot wait for book 2 to be written so I can ugly cry all over again

What. A. Debut.

The characters, world building and magic system all had the hooked straight away and I enjoyed the ride, start to finish.
I love a read that has me laughing, gasping and tearing up multiple times 😆

My favourite highlights:

Mika- one of my new favourite FMC's. As a fellow rage-filled and slightly unhinged woman I found her rather relatable. I only wish I was as badass as Mika 😂

Beans- I so need a Daddy Beans in my life. Can't beat a character who feels like a safety blanket whenever he's around

The food and plant life descriptions- it may seem small to some readers but I always crave attention to detail regarding these things in a fantasy novel and this book nails it. The way the descriptions aid in bringing the world to life is exactly what I want.

Overall I found this to be an incredible dark and romantic debut and recommend to anyone who enjoys a read full of fantastic banter, tension and truly excellent characters.

Excuse me while I cry until Patrons of the Divine Book Two is released.

Spice: 🌶

Tropes:
Slow burn
Morally grey FMC
Found Family
Feminine rage
Forced proximity
Hidden identity
LGBTQ +

Triggers:
Violence
Past s3xual assault
Almost rap3

Who knew that women needed a book about feminine rage?! Just kidding, but seriously, it's good! Our morally grey FMC is Mika, told in first person, and she holds so many emotions within herself... Which she calls her rage, and I can't help but relate, as a woman.

Mika lives in a world where peoples are divided physically by the Land they're born in, rarely does inter-relations happen. Some children develop violet eyes- proof they have been gifted a "power" by the Divine- and become slaves. Only, not all received a gift- the giftless are called Nulls. Mika is a Null who's been trained as an assassin.

Sold to a neighboring Queen, Mika and the group set to retrieve her begin a quest to rescue a kidnapped Princess. But Mika is weary of getting close to them as they continue the journey. Will Mika submit to her rage or will she eventually let people into her heart?

I liked Mika. She reminded me a lot of Celaena from TOG. She's an assassin and she's been taught she's not worthy of others. But Mika is kind, she cares, and she's very smart. You root for her for sure.

But Riley... my MMC. My man. My red headed giant of a boyfriend. You definitely gave me playboy vibes at first but I've come to decide you're a softie. I loved Riley.

And that Slow Burn! Oh I love a good Slow burn!

Okay, I'm not done. I have to shout out to Beans and Bitty too. They were funny, cuddly, and do you think Mama Beryl will adopt me into the family too?

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Null & Void. This book is a ride. Read the trigger warnings, please.

The best way to describe the writing style in this book is short and to the point. There are A LOT of small moments that slowly but surely add up to a story. I won’t lie, I was struggling a little at the beginning, getting easily distracted. Just as I started to consider switching back to the series I was in the middle of reading, BOOM. It picked up. Significantly, and suddenly I was used to reading about all the small moments and appreciated them.

⚠️⚠️⚠️POSSIBLE SPOILERS ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Mika is a confident (to a fault) assassin who finds herself in multiple predicaments. I enjoyed that even though she’s this big, bad don’t need no man assassin, she NEEDS rescuing. It definitely helps with her character development to slowly break down her walls, in my opinion.
Riley. I need more of Riley’s story. My man’s got all the rizz and will definitely have you swooning.

I will definitely continue this series as it releases. The story itself is very intriguing and ultimately what kept me sucked in even at the beginning when I contemplated putting it down.

I expected this book to be a light read but boy was I wrong. I’ve rated it 5 stars because you can’t do halves, but I’d say 4.5 confidently, (ok I’m a generous rater usually but I’m trying to be more discerning, I rate for how much I enjoyed the book higher over the technical stuff, life is short, entertain me 😹)

Some very dark themes along the way which made me put it down and walk away, (I built a Lego Chrysanthemum for distraction therapy) but I’m very impressed with the writers ability to handle these topics and acknowledge responses that waver from the socially expected norm, you could say I relate to Mika’s internalised rage strongly perhaps not as an actual beast though 😝

I liked that while a couple of tropes popped up, they didn’t follow the standard (boring) paths, but took me to unexpected places that kept me engaged where I might have drifted off.

To summarise, great story, well crafted characters and world building, skilfully written and a cliff hanger that will physically HURT lol

Can’t wait for the next one! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

OK yall!! If you’re looking for a badass FMC filled with feminine rage, if you love a rag tag team of misfits all forming their little found family, and you want danger and action and, oh yeah, a very sweet hunk of a MMC? Get this debut!

I love everyone so much, and all of their interactions as the story goes one. I LOVE the queer normative world with Bitty and the Prince. I also love the world building and magic system - in this world, the Divine can have all sorts of powers, ranging from very sought after and powerful ones, to ones that are very mundane and pretty useless - the Junkers.

I absolutely love Mika and her strength and tenacity. And I adore Bitty! It ends on quite the ending, and I'm already anxious to get more of this world and get back to these characters.

OH!! And this book will make you hungry LOL. My girl Mika is a foodie and I am HERE FOR IT lol.

Everyone please read content warnings and then dive into this book!

I received a copy of this book for an instagram tour. My thoughts are my own.

“I’ll wait for you to want it, Firecat.

‘Once an assassin, always an assassin.

Thank you so much to an incredible debut Aussie author, Moody for my ARC of Null and Void ✨⚔️

Friends, this book is FIRE 🔥. The way I immediately adored the first chapter and had a girl crush on our fierce AF female lead, Mika is no lies. She is feisty and ragey and also tender and warm, even if she might fight me on this point. I love her with my whole heart.

Moody’s storytelling is an absolute vibe and deserves all the HYPE. The morally grey, the found family and unlikely allies, the slow burn hate to love and unravelling of hearts and secrets were honestly ADDICTIVE. The writing is the perfect blend of vulnerable and real and angsty.

Immediate honourable mentions are for this STUNNING work of art cover and the FOOD. If you weren’t hungry while reading Null and Void then we weren’t reading the same story 😂. The descriptions had me salivating and I might’ve (definitely) snacked on goodies while consuming this book because it was 👩🏻‍🍳

Themes are: dark romantasy, forced proximity, sparky banter, spicey spice, hidden identity, LGBTQ+ rep, burnt cinnamon roll MMC, feminine rage and One Bed Trope that keeps on giving

Because No Spoilers, Teaser Call Outs are:

💜 You wanna be part of this Rogue Crew
💜 Daddy Beans merch is needed
💜 Poke the Mika bear (IYKYK 😉)
💜 Bitty must be protected at all costs
💜 Your chosen family matters

This book is a wild ride. It’s feeling and raw, wholesome chaos and fighting for your survival in a rich world that has only just begun.

Perfect for fans of Gild meets Carissa Broadbent with touches of Xena Warrior Princess badassary.

And excuse me with THAT ENDING (side eyes 👀 author and is definitely waiting impatiently for the next instalment 🩶)

Favourite lines with No Context are:

‘This group is weird, but maybe I’m weird too.

‘Divine help me, this man will be the death of me.

“Just promise me you won’t fall in love.

3,45 stars, rounded down.

The pitch: Tiny rage-filled assassin sets out to save the princess and finds friendship and love with a rag-tag group of travel companions. There might also be a prince or two involved.

This lived from the tension between Mika and the MMC, as well as getting to know Mika through the inner conflicts she was battling out.

Apart from that, I’d say this was low to medium complexity for a romantasy in terms of writing and character development, with some quite dark parts and topics at times. World-building and overall plot could have been a bit more developed, even after finishing part one there are a lot of things unexplained and slightly confusing or lacking depth. The ending felt a little awkward and rushed to me.

Will I read the next part? Probably. I wanna know what’s going on!

Holy crap, I couldn't put this book down! Null & Void is so captivating, you don't want to miss out on this one, guys! Mika is such a fun character, different from a lot of other morally grey, bad ass women I've read. I loved her! And Riley? Hello! 🔥🔥 The whole gang is amazing, so different from one another but they make a great (found) family. This story has romance, it's funny, it spicy and there is so much action! Be warned though, there is a wicked cliffhanger!

Please check your trigger warnings guys!

Null & Void is coming out August 15th and trust me, you want to read this one!

4.5 so round up 💙

What a friggin good book. The first say 65-70% is such good wholesome found family vibes. Great banter, amazing tension it's just such a good time. AND THEN shit starts happening and it gets dark and twisted & brutal! There are so many little nuggets sprinkled throughout this book & I didn't realise that until thinks popped up!

Anyways long story long fantastic book & for it to be an Aussie indie debut - this series and this author are going places!

This is one of those books that will stay with me for a very long time. I am still processing it 12 hours after finishing. The world building was phenomenal, from the magical class system to the different kingdoms and how they interact, it was beautifully layered and interesting while still being easy to understand. I loved the FMC; she is so feisty, strong, and independent (some of my favorite characteristics), it only adds emotional depth to the story when she shows her vulnerability. The MMC is annoying in the best way, the way that you are unsure if you want her to punch him or kiss him stupid. The found family is an unexpected bonus to this story, they add levity and a sense of belonging that brings me to tears. I am not sure how I am going to be able to wait for the next book in this series.

Highlights:
✨Strong Independent Assassin FMC
✨Hidden Identities
✨Found Family
✨Unique Magical Class System
✨Vibrant World Building

Favorite Quote: "If we constantly let the awful things that happen darken the sun, then we would never see the light again."

Thank you to the author and Book of Matches Media for this review copy. My opinions are my own.
