Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as ŷ and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Wolf Girl: Into the Wild is the first in a new children’s series by Aussie author Anh Do. I read it in one sitting last night and absolutely loved it; can’t wait for #2, Wolf Girl: The Great Escape, which publishes early December 2019.

Gwen and her older sister Kate were rushed from their beds to the car by their Mum and Dad, the urgency of their flight registering on normally calm faces. When their car and lots of others could go no further, Dad and Mum told Gwen to run and not look back; they would follow. But later, an exhausted Gwen realized she was lost and there was no sign of her Mum, Dad and sister; there were no others around at all.

The unexpected arrival of a wolf puppy, a Labrador, a Chihuahua, and a greyhound would have made most people nervous, but not Gwen. And when those animals showed they wanted to help Gwen; to be friends, she thought she was asleep dreaming. But no. Gradually with her animal friends by her side, Gwen managed to survive. She was the leader of her unusual pack. But where were all the humans? What had happened?

Ending with a cliff hanger means I’ll be picking up the next as soon as I can! Fun, entertaining, and highly recommended to all ages 😉

Before I tell you anything else, you need to know that I am beyond excited to finally have a signed copy of one of Anh’s books. He’s one of my favourite authors! Happy dance time!!!
description
Gwen is awoken in the middle of the night. Her school backpack is crammed with food and the rest of her family are rushing to pack what they can in their car before they leave. Gwen doesn’t know where they’re headed or what’s going on, only that something big and scary is happening. It isn’t long before she is separated from her mother, father and her big sister, Kate, who just turned eleven. She winds up alone in a forest in the middle of the night.

While Gwen can’t find any other people she does wind up meeting some animals that are just as alone as she is:
Puppy, a courageous wolf with a black patch on her forehead in the shape of a diamond. She has golden-yellow fur and turquoise eyes.
Nosey, a labrador, who is patient and smart.
Zip, a greyhound, who’s fast, but clumsy as a result of his diminished vision.
Tiny, a bossy and fearless chihuahua.
description
Along the way we also meet Brutus, a strong black mastiff,
description
and Eagle.
description
Over time this unlikely group become family, protecting one another and hunting together.
The dogs had become my brothers. Eagle was my little sister, and Puppy was my best friend.
Gwen still doesn’t know what happened to her human family but she’s determined to find out.

I fell in love with Anh’s writing when I discovered his WeirDo series on the shelf of my local library a couple of years ago. I was intrigued by the fun lenticular covers and soon wanted to be a Do so I could hang out all the time with Weir and his family. I even laugh along with the terrible dad jokes! Then Hot Dog! appeared on the shelf and I met friends Hotdog the dog, Kev the cat and Lizzie the lizard. I enjoy the humour and the focus on friendship, and the importance of teamwork and being a good sport.

More recently I met Nelson Kane, Ninja Kid, and his family. I fell in love with them all, but hold a special place in my heart for Grandma Pat, who is one of the coolest grannies I’ve ever met. It was through Ninja Kid that I was introduced to one of my favourite kid’s book illustrators, .

Today I met Gwen. I was expecting more of the same when I learned Anh and Jeremy had teamed up again for a brand new series, Wolf Girl. I couldn’t have been more right! Or wrong!

The book vortex that sucks me in each time I pick up one of Anh’s books was working perfectly. There was adventure, a loving family and so much heart. Jeremy’s illustrations are just as brilliant as I’ve come to expect and still capture not only what’s happening in the story but also the way I feel as I’m reading. There’s even the familiar feeling of dangling over a cliff as I impatiently wait for the next book in the series.

It’s all so familiar until it wasn’t. While all of Anh’s previous stories have a fun lightness underpinning them, this series begins with fear and uncertainty. What follows is the adventure I was expecting but a darker one with a distinct lack of dad jokes. Different doesn’t mean bad though. I loved it! And I may have noticed a sneaky tear trying to escape at one point. I urgently need the next book in the series.

This is far and away my 9 year olds favourite series right now- she’s flying through them and desperately wanted me to read them too so she has someone to talk to about them (yes, it’s all very cute lol)

I thought it was a lot of fun, with great use of language- not too simplistic as to be boring or non-engaging, but so advanced as to bog down or trip up younger readers. The story itself was entertaining, if a little scary in parts, and more realistic than what I was expecting.

The kid loves it because she can easily imagine herself as Wolf Girl, and as she reads likes to think what she would do in certain situations. She’s also obsessed with Sunrise, and would now like her very own wolf, if anyones offering?

If you have a young reader in your house, we would both HIGHLY recommend checking this one out!

Första delen i spänningsserien Vargflickan.

If you are looking for a great read for a primary school-aged child then look no further. Wolf Girl is a brilliant story about a young girl, Gwen, who is separated from her family during a panicked evacuation from her home. Now scared and alone, she is forced to find her way amongst the thick forest when disasters strikes and a pack of adorable dogs rescue her and quickly become her newfound family. The story unfolds in a heartwarming and fun way as Gwen and her pack set off to find her missing family while attempting to survive in the wilderness together.

Wolf Girl is a story filled with love, loyalty, bravery, and friendship. I was instantly drawn into the story and couldn’t put it down until I found out what would happen next. Paired with stunning illustrations, Wolf Girl is a delightful and easy read that will entertain and captured the imagination of young readers. If you enjoyed Tomorrow When the War Began and animal adventure stories like Milo & Otis then this is a perfect read!

An interesting book! I wanted to read it before I brought it into my classroom for my students to read. I feel like I’ll wait until the second half of the year for them to read it... but I will probably purchase the rest of the series.

4.5. Easy to read, great to inspire reluctant readers to get into reading more.
I am going to love collecting this series. Surviving with a pack of puppies, an eagle, and a wolf. It starts with a lot of action and fear inspired by the author's childhood experiences of a family running away, but unlike the author, Gwen gets separated from hers. We don't know what happened to them, but time passes, and Gwen learns to survive in the wild with her new friends. There are lots of awesome illustrations in this chapter series book.
The book ends with a cliffhanger, so I am excited for the next volume.

I know it's a children / middle grade fiction, but it wasn't super interesting. But being a dog-lover, I have a bit more affinity to the animals in this book.

Ahhh, the convenience of having a wolf companion. Hahaha!

The stillness was spooky. I was grateful to have the dogs, or I would felt really alone.

2 1/2 stars, rounded up because I'm sure kids would enjoy it more than I did.

This is a quick read (I read it in about half an hour), with a large font and many pictures. It is promoted for Ages 8-14, but ages 7-10 is more like it (although it would be ok as a high-interest/low-readability title for 12-14 year olds with reading and comprehension levels below their age). The emphasis on certain words in bold and different type faces would also assist children with reading difficulties.

Overall, the story was ok for what it was. Understandably for the target age group, a lot of detail is left out.

There are pros and cons to the lack of detail, the pro being that there are no details to bog down the pace of the story, making it more engaging for young readers. It ends on a cliffhanger to encourage the purchase of future books, of course, but

I like Anh Do, but this book didn't stand out for me - I do realise that adventure is a difficult genre to write for ages 5-10 because of the limitations in the amount of detail and certain topics which are not generally appropriate. If you are looking for a "kids stranded adventure", The Explorer by Katherine Rundell (ages 9/10+) is a bit better.

"It's amazing and I can't wait to read the rest of the books" - Miss 9

We both really enjoyed reading the book, and we loved that the book jumped straight into the story. It's a book we devoured so quickly. Gwen the main character was brave, adventurous, trustworthy, friendly and caring. We instantly fell in love with one of the doggies Puppy, a Wolf pup who eventually gets renamed as Sunrise. (As she grows up and isn't a puppy anymore).

The connection between Gwen and the animals added a nice touch to the story, especially when Gwen starts to communicate/understand the animals in her care. The bond and friendship between one another was somewhat magical.

The illustrations in the book were beautifully presented and we thought it was wonderful to look at pictures as we read through the story. (I've added a few in)

We liked that there were so many questions, theories and thoughts we asked and talked about. Like what it would be like if we were separated from our family for several years, what to do and don't when we see a snake. But our biggest question/conversation was what was happening at the start of the book? Why were Gwen, Gwen's family and the rest of the community going? And where did they go?

This book states its suitable for 8-14 years old but it does come with some possible triggers for some children. These are the ones I picked up:

Separation of parents/family

Reminiscing of the death of a pet

Killing of animals (Protection and survival)

Kidnapping

War- bombings etc.

A book that peaked my interest for my dog podcast, since it features a female protagonist and a pack of dogs. And it was a cute read, very fast paced but lacking some background details - why was there a war? Why did the planes look like they belonged in WWII when there were modern cars and clothes? I think children probably wouldn't care about the little things though.

I love Gwen and the pack becoming family. Very sweet. And how she taught herself to survive.

I'm unsure about the age range its aimed for 8-14. I remember I was reading far more advanced books at 10-11 so perhaps for younger children and those with a more basic reading comprehension.

The illustrations are also very fun and I love the depictions of the dogs.

I enjoyed this new adventure from Anh Do but I am not sure the format is exactly right for the age group targeted. The font is large with pictures which puts it in the 7-10 age group but I felt that some of the issues that Gwen faced might be too scary for the younger child. It felt more like a 9-12 age group book.
Gwen learns to survive in the wild with some animals she meets along the way. They grow and learn together. Gwen is desperate to have her family find her but she realises she that family is not always who you are born in to.
Reminded me a little of a younger version of My Side of the Mountain and Hatchet. Great for the kids who love adventure survival books.

I read this book to my class of Year Four students. From the very first page, they were engaged in the fast-paced nature of the story. Many times, the students were surprised by the turn of events and begged me to read on! You know the story is a roaring success when even the boys who are reluctant readers plead to continue.

A lot of details were left out but the students didn’t seem to mind and it did open up a world of conversations about survival and other difficulties that Gwen may have experienced and overcome.

The vivid illustrations really opened the world up for the students and they were very keen to start book two. Another success for Anh Do and Jeremy Ley.

Wow! This story is a fantastic, fast-paced yet sensitive adventure. It not only launches the reader straight into the action, but is very convincingly from a kid's point of view - the main character, Gwen, has no idea why her life has suddenly been changed by events in the adult world.
At the same time, she is a memorable character, as are her animals friends. They cope with their strange situation by learning new skills and growing together to become a tough, resilient family.
Can't recommend this highly enough.

I'm reading this with my daughter. She was drawn to the cover, and I liked the premise of a strong female character.
First in the series, we met Gwen who has been separated from her family while they were trying to escape something. As an adult I find it strange that we don’t know what people are trying to escape from, but my daughter is completely invested in the story and characters. Gwen 'adopts' a number of dogs who were left behind and they become a pack. It's about survival, friendship, perseverance. A fairly straightforward plot but fast paced enough to keep you engaged.

it was good. i liked all the pictures and stuff and i liked how they showed how she hunted with her pack,i thought that was cool. I didn't Like how 4 years past in the the course of the book. I felt like it was a bit too fast paced and could've shown a little more detail. the cliffhanger was good but kind of random and i have no idea what those guys were doing. other than that it was a pretty good book.

Into the Wild is the first novel in Anh Do's Wolf Girl series. It started with a bang and once I started, I couldn't put it down. I admired Gwen's resilience and bravery and adored the collection of dogs who formed her pack. Written for middle-school readers, this was a wonderful book for those who love animals and adventures and because it finished on such a cliffhanger, readers will be scrambling to get their hands on the next installment. A great read.

I read this book to my year three class and they LOVED it. It is the most engaged they have been during our shared reading sessions. It has inspired a love of reading and a sense of willingness to read with some students who thought books were silly and a waste of time. They all race to read the copies I have of the first five books in my class library and multiple students have gone home asking for the whole set for Christmas. Bravo, Anh Do!
