Denouncing Reality
According to the philosophy of the 17th century Gottfried Leibniz, no one can know what constitutes reality. We are each trapped in our isolated existence, as if in a windowless room, experiencing things that are both incomplete and incommunicable. Hence everything we claim about the world is an unwitting lie. Truth is some sort 0f summary of what we experience collectively. In such a world, everything is coordinated, as it were, by a benevolent deity who sees to it that we mesh together with some kind of rational and just cohesion despite our inherent mendacity. This, of course, is nonsense. Not because our experience is incomplete or inadequately expressed, but because there is no coordinating God to ensure matters work out with a proper regard for rationality or justice.
On the other hand, perhaps what we call random chance is in fact divine intervention at its most subtle. The Dirty War in Argentina at the end of the 1970鈥檚 is Manguel鈥檚 point of departure for exploring this possibility from an unlikely angle, namely the unreliability (and irrelevance) of personal biography. Indeed, by recruiting almost every significant Argentine writer of the last century into his narrative of exile and suspicion, Manguel shows how truth emerges from falsehood in a most unexpected way - not through divine action but through the giving up of the endeavour to state the truth. This is the surprising discovery of his journalistic protagonist who is investigating a death in the emigre literary community.
It is intriguing that in order to pull this off, Manguel has to resort to the testimony of a dead man... after he is dead. The dead man is the only one who has the complete picture, who doesn鈥檛 lie unknowingly. It is he who has orchestrated the circumstances of the political exiles who find themselves in Madrid - by maliciously lying. But even the dead man, although resurrected for narrative closure, is subject to the laws of chance in both what he encounters and in the results of his actions. He is killed, for example, by another, the writer Bevilaqua, one 0f his victims, and who is already dead. And Bevilaqua never made a claim to know anything.
An Argentinian writer central to Manguel鈥檚 story is Enrique Vila-Matas whose study, Bartleby and Co. (/review/show...), is about the significance of the books that have never been written, and consequently never told lies. Bevilaqua, it turns out, never actually wrote a book. Ultimately this is why he is important - for not writing. The other writers in the story, both fictional and real, are actually unimportant because as one of the characters insists: 鈥淏elieve me. Lying: that is the great theme of South American literature.鈥� Only by not telling the story does it even have a chance to be true. This is an alternative that Leibniz had never considered: Truth requires silence; or at least the humility to know that silence has become appropriate.

I was reading someone's reviews here on goodreads last weekend, and I kept coming across how joyless they were. The reviews were for the sorts of books that I like and it wasn't that I necessarily disagreed or agreed with what the reviewer was saying, it was how miserable the person seemed to come across. Like almost every word the reviewer read was a chore, a cross that had to be bared for something greater and bigger than the reviewer. I don't know if I just thought that this reviewer had an awful ability at time after time picking books that weren't personally enjoyable, or if just the act of reading was like having to pick out only the real gems from the chaff (mixed metaphor), and there could only be a few of these gems so the good words better be used miserly. I started to think, why even read you miserable fuck? If it's a constant source of disappointment and annoyance go find something else to do. If your not in school anymore there is no one forcing you to read anything that you don't enjoy and being well read doesn't earn you any cool points or happiness. Trust me on this one.

But, because Alberto Manguel seems to epitomize a certain sort of attitude that keeps popping up in Latin American authors. A love for literature. One can try to argue that they write what they do because they suffer in a way that American's don't, but that is bullshit. They (I'm generalizing, but I'm thinking of the Borges / Manguel / Bolano sort of strain) write the way they do because they love literature. They love other writers, and it constantly shows itself in their work. What is paradoxical in some ways is that there is a kind of typical American response to serious literature that it has to be a certain way, that it should have some of the fun sucked out of it. That it should tackle the weighty issues in a particular way. That there should be an objective stand on what is good and what isn't good and things should be ranked accordingly and experts looked to in order to find out if something is good or not. I'm quite possibly making stuff up here and this doesn't exist at all, except for maybe in the windbag opinions of Harold Bloom and in reviewers like VirJohn, et al.
I'm disgusted by this view of literature, and I'm even more disgusted that the people who seem to hold this sort of view are also the ones that always seem to be whining that everyone else is close-minded and can't think for themselves, while all they are doing is parroting some accepted opinions and being iconoclastic in juvenile ways (I'll show that type of author I don't like by giving all their books one star!). Maybe I just don't see the threat that other some other people do in someone liking something you don't like, or (gasp) someone not liking something that you are sure is great. It's so fucking boring, almost as boring as the belief that all the good writers are all dead and buried and we now just live in a cesspool of mediocre illiteracy. What a boring and safe way to go about viewing the world of books. Maybe it's just years of working in a bookstore that I can't muster up the undergrad pseudo-intellectual mentality of being offended that people read what I consider bad books, or that not everyone is going to read Flaubert or whatever safely buried author one wants to call the only worthwhile literature. I went through my stage where I thought that literature ended sometime around the moment Kafka coughed up his last bloody bit of phlegm. I'm very happy that I didn't decide to hold on to that view for long though, I would have missed out on a lot of great reading experiences if I did.
One book I would never have read if I held on to that view is this one.
Alberto Manguel has an infectious love of literature. If you haven't read any of his non-fiction I'd certainly recommend him to booknerds. This book, the first novel of his that I've come across (I don't know if he has any other novels) is sort of what you might expect from someone who as a youngster read to the blind Borges. It's an attempt at a biography of a fictional author told from the point of view of four different people who knew the author. It shouldn't be too surprising that one of the characters telling his story about the deceased fictional author is the writer Alberto Manguel, can you be a Borges disciple and not play with the self as a character from time to time?
I wouldn't say that this is a great book, it follows some well worn post-modern literary conventions and I'm fairly sure someone else has done this idea before, but it's still quite a bit of fun and can serve as a good reminder that a whole host of views can co-exist about a book, an author, a style of writing, and you only look like a jack-ass when you dismiss something because you don't personally care for it and then act out because other people have different opinions than you do.

Li disponga in un modo un tantino differente e, perbacco!, il personaggio 猫 cambiato, 猫 un altro, ma altrettanto vero."

I meandered my way through the first half of this book without paying much attention to the details but then I realised there was much more to it than I had thought and started it again. The reread was well worth while and I read the second half with much more enjoyment and comprehension, although, in the end, it didn't quite live up to the brilliance announced in the first half.
Like Houellebecq in his most recent book, La Carte et le Territoire, Manguel himself is a key character in All Men are Liars and again like H, he paints himself in fairly pathetic terms. Furthermore, they both refer to real book titles by contemporary authors, even giving these authors minor roles in the action so that the lines between what is truth and what is fiction are very blurred. Interesting.

Really? Thank you Alberto Manguel for this statement.
No, thank you for this book of lies.
Five people, including trusty Alberto Manguel himself, tell their own stories about the death of this mysterious, no, better yet, aloof Argentinian writer Alejandro Bevilacqua who wrote the classic book 鈥淚n Praise of Lying.鈥� Each of them admit their version is the truth while denying the other versions.
Which is the truth? Is there any truth? Are they all lying, including our own author? Is this a truism about Latin American literature? Oddly I have heard this from another Latin American writer, Juan Gabriel Vasquez. Maybe they all are liars? Is this a cultural thing? I would be damned for saying this, wouldn鈥檛 I?
Why do they lie? Manguel pointed out some things that I had not thought about. Life in Madrid in the last days of Franco was not great. 鈥淓very one wore a mask,鈥� he notes. You never knew where people stood. During this time, many people, writers included, fled Latin American thanks to the political climate of all those dictators. 鈥淐oming to Spain, they thought they were in paradise.鈥� So they wrote about their lands they fled. They told their truths even though few would know the truth. These writers created the Latin American Boom. Which in itself is weird knowing they were thriving under Franco. This is a feat to itself. No lies!
They wrote to save themselves. I guess we all would do the same. They are heroes and villains. The trick is to find out who they are. I recalled 鈥淭he Imposter鈥� by Javier Cercas that was an expos茅 of a hero that turned out to be less than 鈥渉eroic鈥� (and a 鈥渢rue鈥� story). Oddly Cercas was one of the people Manguel thanked at the end of the story. Hmmm. Maybe this is a Spanish thing as well? Oops might be damned for this statement. Let鈥檚 just be tidy and say all men are liars.

No, thank you for this book of lies.
Five people, including trusty Alberto Manguel himself, tell their own stories about the death of this mysterious, no, better yet, aloof Argentinian writer Alejandro Bevilacqua who wrote the classic book 鈥淚n Praise of Lying.鈥� Each of them admit their version is the truth while denying the other versions.
Which is the truth? Is there any truth? Are they all lying, including our own author? Is this a truism about Latin American literature? Oddly I have heard this from another Latin American writer, Juan Gabriel Vasquez. Maybe they all are liars? Is this a cultural thing? I would be damned for saying this, wouldn鈥檛 I?
Why do they lie? Manguel pointed out some things that I had not thought about. Life in Madrid in the last days of Franco was not great. 鈥淓very one wore a mask,鈥� he notes. You never knew where people stood. During this time, many people, writers included, fled Latin American thanks to the political climate of all those dictators. 鈥淐oming to Spain, they thought they were in paradise.鈥� So they wrote about their lands they fled. They told their truths even though few would know the truth. These writers created the Latin American Boom. Which in itself is weird knowing they were thriving under Franco. This is a feat to itself. No lies!
They wrote to save themselves. I guess we all would do the same. They are heroes and villains. The trick is to find out who they are. I recalled 鈥淭he Imposter鈥� by Javier Cercas that was an expos茅 of a hero that turned out to be less than 鈥渉eroic鈥� (and a 鈥渢rue鈥� story). Oddly Cercas was one of the people Manguel thanked at the end of the story. Hmmm. Maybe this is a Spanish thing as well? Oops might be damned for this statement. Let鈥檚 just be tidy and say all men are liars.

I selected this book based on the cover art alone. I had no idea what the story was about, nor did I look up any info about it prior to reading. Wow. Loved it. A shifting story with various reliable (or unreliable) narrators, forcing us to think about reality, memory, fiction, & truth. Is there ever really one truth? How can one single truth even exist? Sure, it's a theme that has been covered in many great books through time, but Manguel makes a worthy addition to the pantheon of such works. It's a very readable story with quite a few nuanced layers. Gorgeous.

Alberto Manguel quite obviously has a passion for all things literary. If from nothing else, one can see this from his impressive life's works. This novel was no exception in exemplifying this, though it does require some extra eighty pages, "reading into", and deeper unraveling in order to properly evince this.
This being the first fiction that I have read from Manguel, I was determined to see it through, although I admit the fist almost eighty pages were not very engaging. This is one of those novels where, on a second read, it would become that much better. The puzzle pieces having fallen somewhat into place; at least the larger picture vaguely in place, the first (long) chapter would have a frame of reference to guide it along.
An epistolary style novel, each chapter is told from a different character's perspective. Quite well done by Manguel, as I found each voice unique. I felt he had a lot of fun with this one, in fact, as he played a little with different literary techniques, structuring, formats, etcetera throughout the story. All the better for the reader, as I quite liked his experimental writing.
1. Apologia, told by Alberto Manguel himself, begins the novel. They are all told to a Jean-Luc Terradillos, a reporter assigned and/or voluntarily interested in writing a profile on Alejandro Bevilacqua, a recent suicide (was it?)
2. Much Ado About Nothing, written by girlfriend Andrea. She is the one whom discovered the unmarked manuscript, In Praise of Lying, abandoned, among his possessions. She proceeded to publish it without his permission to acclaim & admiration everywhere. At the great reveal, Bevilacqua literally ran away from the stage, dying and/or committing suicide less than a few days later.
3. The Blue Fairy, written by his cellmate in prison, Marcelino Olivares. Alas, he, of course, was secretly an inspired writer, having left his manuscript with his friend Bevilacqua, "an honest man", for safekeeping.
4. The Study of Fear, a letter from Gorostiza, a former spy/government agent whom has had a need for revenge against Bevilacqua, unbeknownst to him, since long ago. The reason? As always in this things, unrequited love.... Understandably upset following the reveal of this novel that does not belong to him, Bevilacqua finds escape with Manguel. He is there while Manguel is out of town. Olivares arrives to reclaim what is his. They are still friendly when this man arrives for his long awaited revenge. Having acquired information to end Bevilacqua in whatever ways possible, he scares Olivares away, then this is where things become vague. He is trying to open the balcony, when Bevilacqua tries to close them, then there seems to be a struggle, then Bevilacqua seems to commit suicide (according to him). Hisrevenge achieved, he leaves, soon ending his own life.
5. Fragments, concluded by Teradillos, in which he tells us he has decided not to write the profile afterall. "With my act of resignation, Bevilacqua steps forward with a body, a voice, a presence. It is I, his reader, his chronichler, Jean-Luc Teradillos, ehom disappears."
So what makes this mysetery of a puzzle of an enigma of a novel in a book a great read? What it is really about is how none of us really know who we are, how we present ourselves in so many different ways, not only to ourselves, but in different areas of our lives. Also how our memories are capricious. (See:) How will we seem to someone once we are gone? How will we be remembered? How are we represented? We all adapt in different ways; each character is telling different stories in order to have Bevilacqua be the Bevilacqua they want him to be. In fact, Bevilacqua himself, as Teradillos says in the concluding chapter, likely would not be able to choose which "Bevilacqua" was the real him. (See:)

Si legge in una volta sola, se non dovete subire interruzioni come la sottoscritta.
Al contrario di quanto dice il titolo non ci sono bugiardi, ma solo punti di vista, sogni e ricordi differenti. Il romanzo 猫 diviso in 4 sezioni, con 4 voci narranti, che ci illustrano la vita e la morte del sig. Bevilacqua. L'uomo 猫 un italiano emigrato a Buenos Aires, come tanti. Come tanti incrocia una rivoluzione, la repressione. Come altri si diletta nella scrittura, ma senza successo: il suo unico prodotto di gloria pare essere un'attribuzione indebita, un errore. Bevilacqua prima non ha la forza di chiarire l'equivoco, poi gli manca il tempo: il suo cadavere verr脿 trovato su un marciapiede di Madrid.
Ma chi 猫, esattamente, questo signore? Cosa ha fatto prima di arrivare in Spagna? Che lavoro aveva, che persone frequentava? L'amante lo racconta come eroe passionale, il conoscente come persona semplice che si nota poco. La narrazione mi ricorda tanto nello stile del "si dice che", ma la trama deve molto a Pirandello e al classico , in cui il protagonista continua a cambiare in base alle persone che lo frequentano. Come 猫 possibile che Bevilacqua sia al contempo torturato e torturatore? Chi ha ragione? Chi ha le prove per identificare quel cadavere sul marciapiede? Ma anche: perch茅 e come, su quel marciapiede, c'猫 finito?
Romanzo interessante, coinvolgente, un giallo inusuale sullo sfondo dell'Argentina dei desaparecidos.

鈥淓logio della menzogna鈥� viene al mondo, fra botte e torture, nella cella di un carcere argentino. Alejandro Bevilacqua, presunto autore dell鈥檕pera, spicca il volo dalla finestra della casa di Manguel la sera dopo la presentazione ufficiale del libro nella libreria Antonio Machado di Madrid. Perch茅? Si tratta di suicidio o di omicidio? Chi era Alejandro Bevilacqua? Il vero autore di 鈥淓logio della menzogna鈥� chi era, o chi 猫? A distanza di anni il giornalista francese Jean-Luc Terradillos cerca di ricostruire l鈥檌dentit脿 di Alejandro. E la verit脿. Fra le voci che lo raccontano c鈥櫭� qualcuno che possa farne un ritratto sincero? Qualcuno che possa riedificare una realt脿 smarrita o forse mai nata? Bevilacqua era veramente una presenza anonima che sapeva distinguere 鈥渢ra il falso vero e il vero falso, e il primo gli sembrava pi霉 reale鈥�? Era davvero uno pseudo-Bartleby sfuggente e impalpabile, un 鈥渁bbozzo di vita鈥�? O era l鈥檈satto contrario? Bevilacqua, 鈥渁mante, eroe, amico, vittima, traditore, autore apocrifo鈥︹€� 猫 il risultato di verit脿 difformi fra loro, verosimili singolarmente.

In fin dei conti, la verit脿 si tesse con mille menzogne. Fa parte del gioco letterario. E non solo, a ben pensarci. 脠 un gioco in voga anche nelle sale dei potenti.

P.S. Certo 猫 che in questo romanzo di Manguel si respira, fra citazioni e riferimenti, il suo amore per la letteratura. E senza ombra di menzogna.

I wanted to read this after listening to Alberto Manguel's Packing My Library, and I was not disappointed at all. I don't know what it is with Latin American authors, but they always bring an edge of magic to their books of a romantic kind. Not love-romantic, but literary-romantic. In any case, this book is an unfolding mystery throughout four different viewpoints. It is an extremely strange but beautiful thriller-meets-high-literature. It starts as a novel, continues as a love story, and ends as a thriller. Please, just read it.
