Genre ~ romantic comedy
Publication date ~ August 1, 2023
Page Count ~ 320
Audio length ~ 8 hours 14 minutes
Narrator ~ Ann Marie Gideon
POV ~ dual 3rd
Featuring ~ nurse, firefighter, forced proximity, one bed, friends with benefits, friends to lovers, roommates to lovers, he falls first, fade to black, no steamage

Claire & Graham have been friends for years and roommates for 1. Both still single in their 30's and agree to marry if they haven't found the one by 40. Claire is looking for love and Graham is not the relationship type when they step into a friends with benefits situation.

Graham is on my book boyfriend list. He's so sweet and lovable, and his devotion to his family and his dog, Gertrude, was adorable. He's used to being super active and always down for an adventure ~ camping, mountain biking and rock climbing are his favorites, so when he breaks his leg and is practically bedridden for weeks he gets really frustrated, which I felt was realistically written. He really grew as a person throughout the book and I liked the email/journal entries he wrote as a form of therapy.

Claire was a great caretaker and friend. I liked her for most of the book, but her character went downhill for me at a certain point, stayed down for a bit and then eased her way back up the hill into likable territory.

Overall, I loved these two together ~ great chemistry, great banter and they just seemed like they had a great time together. Love that we had both POV's, too. I have to round down my 4.5 because I absolutely hated the 3rd act breakup, which I usually do. There's maybe a tiny part of me, like my hangnail size, that understands the reasoning, but I'm a YOLO'er. Anything can happen at any time to give you the boot out of life....ya never know, so live it.

So technically this is not listed as a series, but the characters from are very involved here since they're best friends, so do with that what you will.

*Thanks to , Grace from Harlequin Trade Publishing, MIRA and NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*

Nurse Claire and her firefighter roommate Graham make a pact - they will enter a friends with benefits arrangement as long as they are both perpetually single. But when Graham suffers an injury at work and Claire takes on the role of caregiver, sparks begin to fly with unforeseen consequences.

Easily one of my favorite reads of 2023, this dynamite roommates to friends to lovers is perfect in pretty much every way. The incredible banter between our MCs Claire and Graham, the love/hate relationship between Claire and Gertrude (Graham’s grumpy rescue dog) and of course, the many appearances from the characters in Ashley’s previous book, 𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘙𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, created the perfect, bingeable romcom.

Even better than just the physical book, I did this as an immersive reading, bringing in the audio to listen alongside it. Honestly, this is the best rom-com audio I have EVER listened to. Ann Marie Gideon does a remarkable job of bringing out Claire’s humor and wit, Graham’s charm, Gertrude’s snark, and making the whole listening experience pretty unforgettable. This one definitely left me with a bookish hangover.

While this is book two in an interconnected series, the author does a great job at recapping book one for the reader, allowing this to also be read as a standalone (though you’d miss cuties Mia and Noah so don’t do that).

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞:
•roommate romance
•forced proximity
•friends to lovers
•enemies to friends 🐶
•the wittiest banter
•closed door
•book hangovers

S/o to all the healthcare workers, EMT, firefighters, police officers etc. You guys MATTER! If it were not for you I might not have finished this book.

Things I loved:
1. The FMC and MMC are in their 30s.
2. The dog's name is Gertie.
3. The MMC writes secret emails to FMC.

Tropes:
1. Friends to Lovers

Summary: Claire and Graham are roommates who decide to get married when they are 40 if they do not have any other potential prospects hence name roommate pact. After a week or whatever they decide that instead of that plan they can be F-buddies instead but only when their other roommate leaves for their month long vacation. Graham has a hiking accident that leaves him with broken ribs and a broken leg. Claire assumes the role of caregiver and they have lots of intimate moments. They get to know each other on a deeper level, discuss their fears and do other "things" also. Graham falls first and once he expresses feelings Claire gets scared because she doesn't want to be in a relationship with someone who has a dangerous career b/c her father died as a pilot.

The FMC was so annoying and was hot n cold. She states, "But the thought Graham might fall in love with me was never on my radar. This is all his fault really." Like wtf you met his family and talked to him on an intimate but didn't think he could possibly fall in love??!!

The MMC is just meh. Nothing special.

the roommate pact follows claire, an ER nurse, and graham, a firefighter, who are roommates living in colorado with their third roommate, reagan, and graham’s dog, gertrude.

toward the start of the book, claire and graham agree to a fwb situation since reagan is going to be gone visiting family for a month. but a few days later, before doing anything other than kissing, graham gets into a rock climbing accident and is seriously injured. claire, being a nurse, decides to take care of him during his recovery.

their romance was super sweet! i wish there had been more chemistry in their banter, but i was definitely rooting for them. graham’s emails were adorable, and i really liked claire’s gesture at the end! i also didn't realize that allison ashley has another book called would you rather, and it is about two of the side characters in from one, noah and mia. can't wait to pick it up soon! 👩🏼‍⚕️🧑🏼‍

⭐️ - 4 stars
🌶 - 1/5 (all scenes are fade-to-black)
tropes: fwb, nurse/firefighter
perfect for: first responders (specifically nurses or firefighters), fans of ali hazelwood, readers who like camping/rock climbing/the outdoors

Thank you so much to MIRA and Edelweiss+ for providing an advanced copy of this. All thoughts and opinions are still my own.

I was highly anticipating this romance but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me.

I loved the concept and setup for this romance. I LOVE a friends to lovers, forced proximity romance. And add in care taking and I'm HOOKED.

But while this had all the tropes and making of an all time favorite, it just never hooked or convinced me of their romance.

Our hero is an adrenaline junky who loves adventure and pushing himself. Our heroine is an outspoken nurse who desperately wants to find her person without sacrificing her demanding career.

But while their connection and chemistry is strong, there are traumas from their past keeping each other at arms length.

Like I said, this setup was fantastic. I loved the care taking aspect, I loved their banter, I loved how driven and self assured they were. I also really loved the email/journal aspect when the hero wrote letters to the heroine's old email.

But while we were constantly told about their connection and chemistry, I never felt it.

And I think a huge portion of that was due to the fact that this was fade to black.

Look, I'm totally cool with a fade to black romance. I prefer knowing going in, but it won't stop me from loving a book.

However, in this case, it did.

Because the physical relationship between them was a huge aspect of their romantic connection. And we didn't get to see it.

The characters were constantly talking about how amazing their sex was. How connected they felt. How it was magical and more than they ever experienced. How it was a way to for them to share their feelings when they couldn't say them out loud.

But we missed all of it. And were instead just told that it was true. Which left me feeling... nothing.

In the end this just feels aggressively average. And like a book I will quickly forget about.

As a character driven reader, I really need to feel a connection to the characters, and this lacked that for me.

But if you're looking for a low steam, friends to lovers romance, with lots of banter and alpha hero, this might work for you! It's definitely an author I think a lot of romance readers will adore. She's just not the author for me.

When in doubt, pick up a book by Allison Ashley.

I was head over heels for Allison Ashley's Would You Rather novel that it became one of my all-time favorite romance books.
That lead to me becoming interested in her upcoming novel.

Reasons I'm excited for 'The Roommate Pact'.
-Frenemies to lover
-Secret pining
-Friends with benefits
-Main female character taking care of main male character
-One bed trope (isn't specified, but I'm sure of it)
-NOAH & MIA CAMEOS

I know I said in a reading update that this is a 2 star read....but I had to deduct half a star for that ending.

This book sounded like it would be a fun and sexy read. This book literally has one of my favorite tropes " One Bed". It should have been a slam dunk but this book was so disappointing. Claire our main character was annoying and Graham is giving Incel. Claire and Graham had zero chemistry. We spend the entire book hearing about how great the sex is but the book is fade to black. Now yall know I'm not huge on sex scenes but if we gonna talk about sex than we need to show something. Claire's reasoning is extremely confusing she dumps Graham in the 3rd act for no reason.

Now Graham...Graham, Graham, Graham.

I read several reviews and yall seem to love this man....why?

Graham the literal worst. Graham definitely listened to Andrew Tate at some point in his life. This nearly 40 year old man doesn't trust women because in the FUCKING eighth grade a girl rejected him and publicly embarrassed him. Who the fuck is still thinking about shit that happened in the 8th grade? I barely remember the names of anyone I went to middle school with. What kind of mentally stunted person's whole life is determined by some silly shit that happened in 8th grade. I understand that bullying can have an impact on your life but most people have let that shit go by time they are 30...let alone 40 years old. To make matters worse, Claire runs into this now grown ass woman who embarrassed Graham and she tries to "Show her what's she missing"....It's been like 25 years, that woman probably has no memory of embarrassing Graham....She was probably extremely confused.

This book made my head hurt and I won't be picking up anymore books by this author. I'm obviously in the minority with this opinion because everyone else seems to love this book and for some reason Graham. It's not for me...I'm happy it's over.

Check out all my reviews at:

THE ROOMMATE PACT by Allison Ashley is a delightful and fun roommates to lovers rom-com, contemporary romance. I fell right into the premise, banter, and romance from page one. This is easily read as a standalone romance even though it does have some carryover characters from book one, Would You Rather.

ER nurse Claire Harper is not interested in any man who is a risk-taker after the loss of her father, but with a hectic work schedule and no boyfriend, she makes a pact one night while at the local bar with her roommate that if both are still single at forty, they will marry each other. She really doesn’t believe it will happen because besides being a firefighter and a recreational rock climber, both very risky, he also has a small rescue dog, Dorothy, that hates her. But a weird chemistry is starting to build between them.

When firefighter Graham Scott is seriously injured in a rock-climbing fall, Claire rushes to his side and will do anything to help him heal including putting up with Dorothy. Can they move from roommates to friends with benefits, to something more?

I loved Claire and Graham both so much. They are both interesting characters on their own, but Ms. Ashley takes them on an emotional journey of growth that is both believable and heartfelt. Graham is so carefree, and you can feel shallow, but when opening up emotionally with his journaling, he pulled at every one of my heartstrings. I always love the addition of a dog to a story and Dorothy was great as she was on her own journey of acceptance. There is something very special about these two, not only their chemistry, but also their emotional journey to love.

I highly recommend this exceptional rom-com, contemporary romance!

Roommates who agree to have a friends with benefits relationship but then the guy has an accident and now his leg is broken and she's a nurse so she's going to take care of him and NOW THEY'RE FALLING IN LOVE.

I'm a huge fan of Allison Ashley's Would You Rather and it's basically one of my favorite years of last year (did it come out last year or two years ago? TIME IS WEIRD). So I was so excited to read the sequel, The Roommate Pact. We meet Claire and Graham in the first book, they're Mia and Noah's besties and they have always had this easy relationship. They're very similar and in this four-person friendship group where two of them are married, they always ended up being paired up together too.

But then Graham gets into a climbing accident and breaks his leg before anything starts between them. Claire wants to help him out because he's her friend, roommate, and she's also a nurse so she wants to be there for him. This "bring back to health" trope is insane because wow. I WAS SWOONING. They were sleeping on the same bed, watching TV together 24/7, doing all kinds of cute stuff together. Like I WAS ALSO FALLING IN LOVE WITH THEM!!! Their relationship is so organic in the way that it's clear where it changes. It's not sudden like sometimes books can be. You see where it goes from friendship, to maybe even best friends, and then love. They have this great relationship and can lean on each other.

Also I really loved the email aspect of the book. So Graham has a cast and can't really go and do anything. Claire recommends journaling, for him to write out all of what he's feeling. He decides to send emails to Claire's unused email address where he knows she'll never read because she doesn't even remember the password. There, he tells her everything and slowly you see how he's opening up her heart to her, to romance. It's so sweet and cute to read his entries.

Gertrude was very cute. Love heroes who own tiny dogs that own their hearts <3 And Gertrude grows on you and watch her go from hate to love with Claire is so HILARIOUS AND ADORABLE.

The characters were slightly annoying from the beginning which I thought would get better as the book went on, but it didn't. I didn't care for either of them, the romantic dialogues were cringy and not much happened in terms of plot.

Claire was worse than Graham though, he deserves much much better. The third act breakup was so stupid (as they often are), I haven't read a more ridiculous one in a while. It was truly awful, and Claire was the main reason why.

It's not like I had high hopes for this book, but I'm still a little disappointed.

2.5 ⭐️ rounded up to 3, I think. I’m conflicted.

In the spirit of trying to be more positive, here’s what I liked.

Two stars for Graham- I love him. Sweet man. He was so observant of CLAIRE for YEARS. ** The way he knew what outfits she wore on certain days in the past!!** He has his dog Gertrude because he’s a hot firefighter who ran back into a building to save her- oh my heart. THE EMAIL LETTERS- that’s the round up tipping point. Graham’s emails were the best part of this book. He spilled his heart out to Claire only to have it FUCKING SMASHED TO PIECES!! 🤬😡😡😡😤

The half star is for Gertrude. The fact she was hateful to Claire in the beginning- listen, dogs KNOW THINGS. Trust your pet, Graham.

Why I took 2 stars away:

I’m not a fan of the friends with benefits trope, but I am REALLY not a fan of “I’ll fuck you and also be on dating apps because you’re not the marrying kind. Then proceeds to break his heart AND also date the safe dentist for a month. No. Just hard no from me.

Claire’s whole reasoning for not being with Graham during the third act conflict made LESS sense because she’s an ICU-ER nurse. Her whole “I can only marry an accountant or dentist who will be safe at work and come home to our kids bullshit would have made more sense if she’d been a teacher or something. But a hospital nurse?? YOU SEE ALL THE RANDOM SHIT THAT ENDS LIVES ALL THE DAMN TIME! It happens to accountants and teachers and doctors and librarians AND ALSO to firefighters and police officers and nurses. TF?! Also, you see kids die and leave broken hearted parents but you still want children. so WTAF breaking that man’s heart after he bares his soul to you in email letters.

Her logic is like me looking at my husband after twenty years of marriage when his dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and saying, “I don’t want to watch that possibly happen to you or live in fear that it might so we need to divorce. That’s not how love works.

Which, by the way Claire Bear, you never actual do much soul bearing or revelation of your feelings. You never show me how you noticed Graham or saw him as anything other than “here for a good time not a long time, but HE saw YOU the whole damn time. Claire kept saying he wasn’t marriage material and he never has feelings TO HIS FACE right up until his says he loves her. She was in DENIAL of his feelings and her own. GRAHAM DESERVED BETTER. And fuck the camping trip. Not enough groveling for what she did to him. Not. Enough 😡

Overall, Graham and Gertrude were great. The rest I found frustrating.

After Graham is injured in a climbing accident, his roommate, friend, and ER nurse, Claire, stays in his room to take care of him. They also just started a friends with benefits relationship and as can be expected, they develop feelings for each other. Things in both their pasts create obstacles and hesitancies, but overall this was a sweet romance. There was some cute banter and I enjoyed the character growth both Graham and Claire had. My biggest issue was how formulaic is was to the friends to lover trope. There really wasn’t anything new here I hadn’t read before in either context or personalities.

I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

I was looking for a a quick audiobook today for my 6+ hour drive home today. This book did not disappoint! As an RN, I enjoy books when the characters are in the medical profession and it’s written in an accurate form. The banter between Claire and Graham was enjoyable. And I liked how Graham had a little dog that Claire had to eventually develop an understanding with. The scenes with Graham’s family and his childhood home were also really good. Another aspect I like was how the intimate scenes weren’t explicit but was still really hot.

EEK!! I loved Would You Rather and this was sequel perfection!!

Roommates Claire and Graham make a pact that if they are single in four years, they would act on their attraction and get together. However, all that changes when Graham gets injured and Claire, being the nurse she is, offers to help nurse him back to health.

I love Allison Ashley’s writing and this book reminded me why. It is heartfelt, humorous, engaging and a quick binge. She uses her knowledge of working in the medical field and brings this background into her work, and what can be better than a heroine who’s a nurse and an outdoorsy firefighter hero. Claire and Graham had not only the most beautiful chemistry but also strong character growth. One of my favorite parts was reading the emails Graham sends to Claire’s unused email address as a form of therapy. I am also a big write to no one person and there was something special about seeing Graham open up in these letters and how much it helped with the healing process. Also, for WYR fans, there is a lot of Mia and Noah scenes integrated throughout the story <3

Read if you like:
-Forced proximity
-Medical settings
-Lighthearted reads with emotional substance
-Journaling for therapy
-Fade to black romance scenes

Du kambariokai Grehemas ir Klerė sudaro sandorį. Jei sulaukę keturiasdešimties abu bus vis dar vieniši.. Pasiners į draugų su privalumais santykius. Toks susitarimas abu tenkino. Iki kol..

Be galo šmaikštūs, jautrūs bei romantiški veikėjai lengvai užkariavo mano širdį.

I don't think this author is for me. Neither this or was a win, unfortunately. What I find most jarring is how very heavily it focused on their physical relationship, yet it was a completely closed-door romance.

Now listen, I prefer closed-door romances—that's certainly not the problem I have here—but the level of sexual tension just felt so misplaced, almost like the book didn't know which direction to go.

I liked the caregiver storyline, with Claire taking charge of caring for her friend and roommate, Graham, after a rock-climbing accident. It created some really sweet, vulnerable moments.

But I really struggle with the friends-with-benefits trope. Often I'm left questioning why the characters can't just be together. It was no different here. Both Claire and Graham certainly had their reasonings, but they were a little silly, especially for Graham. The attempt at being emotional felt too contrived for me.
