A charming slow-burn romantasy featuring a duty-bound noblewoman with a chronic illness, a prince who would rather be in a library than on a throne, and a magical ride through a world of cozy enchantment

*This beautiful paperback edition features sprayed edges.*

Bianca knows her duty comes before her heart. So when the threat of war looms, she agrees to marry the neighboring kingdom’s heir. But not all royal weddings are a fairytale, and Prince Aric, Bianca’s betrothed, is cold, aloof, and seems to hate her on sight.

To make matters worse, on their wedding night, an assassination attempt goes awry―leaving Aric magically transformed into a horse. Bianca does what any bride in this situation would do: she mounts her new husband and rides away to safety.

Sunset returns Aric to human form, but they soon discover the assassination attempt is part of a larger plot against the throne. Worse, Bianca has been framed for Aric’s murder, and she’s now saddled with a husband who is a horse by day and a frustratingly attractive man by night.

As an unexpected romance begins galloping away with their hearts, Bianca and Aric must rely on each other to unravel the curse and save the throne.

I think a fun time can be had with this book in which a prince suddenly turns into a horse on his wedding night, but only if you're really along for the ride (ha!) and turn your brain off a little while reading. Otherwise this will be a frustrating read, and I'm speaking from experience. I know it's a weird thing to say about a fantasy book that shouldn't be taken too seriously, but there is no logic to be found here. Bianca is married off to the neighboring kingdom so war may be avoided. Her parents kinda hate her, but she is an ever-dutiful daughter who wants to protect her country and quickly accepts her fate. Even though her betrothed is rumored to be a murderer. Their first meeting is cold, and their wedding night would have been too, if Prince Aric hadn't suddenly turned into a horse during an assassination attempt. They gallop away into the night and the rest of the book is about them trying to figure out what the hell just happened. Me too, because there is so much I didn't understand:

- Bianca heard the rumors about her future husband and knew this wouldn't be a union of love, but she still is so very offended by literally everything he does. Like, he asks her to join him for breakfast via letter, and she simply cannot believe he wouldn't come and ask her that in person. Girl, he is the ruler of this kingdom?
- Bianca brings a dagger to her first meeting with Aric when there's literally a war at stake?
- And is it really enough to only send one woman and her staff to a foreign kingdom to ensure an alliance?
- Aric thinks that Bianca sent the assassin although she was in danger too. Honestly, they belong together if they misunderstand each other on purpose every time.
- The way they were trying to figure out who actually sent the assassin when there was a great total of like 3 characters introduced by name, and only one who would benefit from Aric's death.
- The world building doesn't go beyond: There's this country where magic is strictly regulated and that country where magic roams freely, and they better don't make war.
- Speaking of the magic: Everyone with magic potential has to be trained for NINE years, so that they are not a danger to the public. But Bianca's sister can do what she wants, just because, I guess?
- Said sister gave Bianca a spell that she might use when she's in danger. It's a spell that turns an attacker into a horse. It turns an attacker into a horse while they still have full conscience, giving them a super heavy body with which they may kick or trample Bianca to death even better. Wouldn't it be smarter to turn them into a guinea pig or something?

The list goes on, but I think that these are enough examples to illustrate my frustration with this book. The romance gave nothing either. Let me tell you how their relationship developed:

Step 1: Miscommunication
Step 2: Banter
Step 3: Love

Mind you, it's been like 5 days. And don't forget the never-ending traveling during step 2 where every inn along the way had of course only one bed. You know, the bed where the spice can happen. The entire book reads like YA, but of course it's actually not, we have to check off the popular tropes.

Take my review with a grain of salt, this book was clearly not for me. There were some things I liked, like the chronic illness representation or the way how gender didn't matter in this world, but that's really not enough to sing praises for this book.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Hodderscape for providing a digital arc in exchange for an honest review.

. ݁ . ݁ ݁ . ݁.Thank you to Tor and Bramble for providing me with a physical ARC for early review!!. ݁ . ݁ ݁ . ݁.

This one is for the Barbie in Swan Lake girlies. This is for the Bella Sara girlies. If you owned a Breyer horse stable and loved the Princess Bride growing up, *this will be your book of 2025.*

One of my autistic special interests is horses, especially magical horses, and I'm also a huge lover of cozy fantasy. So when Behooved came across my radar, I knew it was my sacred duty to get my hands on it. And low and behold, this is probably going to be my favourite book of 2025. No one is surprised.

Behooved tells the story of Bianca, dutiful daughter and Duchess of Damaria, a country which has made great strides in technological advancement towards weapons of war and destruction via their Adept guild of magic users. She concedes to be married off to the heir apparent of Gildenheim, Aric, after the mysterious death of his mother, the queen. However, neither of them have any blinders on when it comes to the reality of the situation; this is a forced marriage, and it will not be a happy one.

On the night of their wedding, Aric is attacked and Bianca is left with her husband, now a horse, and a royal plot to assassinate the heir of Gildenheim. During their travel across the country, Bianca learns that the cold, frosty exterior of her husband hides a warm, kind, and anxious soul who has been put down his whole life for not being someone more assertive and cunning. And who knows, maybe the two royals can find love in their hearts after all...

LISTEN. The tropes of this. Cozy fantasy. Forced marriage. Only one bed. Only one stall in the stable. Grumpy x grumpy. I can't even express how tailor-made this book was for me! The horse puns. Them both being terrible at communication. The eventual enthusiastic consent (WE LOVE!). And above all, the incredible attention put on Bianca as a person with chronic illness. While not stated by name in the text, Stevenson confirms in the notes explicitly that Bianca is meant to have celiac disease. There's no magical cure for it, Bianca doesn't get "fixed" by witchcraft or sorcery even though magic is inherently present in the world. She struggles with it every day and night and has to deal with flares and bad episodes throughout the story. I've literally never read a fantasy where I felt like the character was so human. Listen. Her tummy hurt and she was so brave about it. Brave to the point of literally standing up to four grown adults with weapons during a bad flare in order to try to protect Aric. Bianca is twenty six years old and has spent her entire life being told that her condition makes her weak and that it is a weakness she must not show at all costs. And every single step she takes in the story proves that she's the strongest person in the entire book.

Speaking of Bianca being twenty six, Aric is twenty eight! I feel like we rarely get to see characters in this age demographic as main characters. It was so refreshing and it made their romance feel so much more mature and believable. Even though I don't think I can classify this as slow burn. They knew each other for like, max, three weeks!! But it was meant to be. Tatiana making dirty jokes about Aric turning into a horse had me giggling like a child. The supporting cast as a whole were wonderful. Juliana and Catalina and Marya all felt super well-charactetized but Tatiana takes the cake.

The attempted-murder mystery isn't really very veiled--- we're only given one real suspect for whodunnit and it isn't a super complex reason. And it almost felt like there was an epilogue missing where the rest of the assassination plot got resolved. But with a happily ever after as sweet as the one given, it behooves me to be lenient.

Overall, I am so pleased and tickled pink to have been given the chance to review something that speaks to me on so many levels. I can't wait to see more from Stevenson!

Cute and cosy. I had a fun, easy time with it, though I was more invested in the first half than in the second. I wanted more from the world, the magic system, and the romance. Swan Princess meets My Lady Jane vibes but with less tension.

Bramble stays having different and fun romantasy books and I'm here for it! This book was fun we have the main characters that have to get married in their respective countries. The mmc is turned into a stallion by a spell on the wedding night. On that same night, there is also an assassination attempt on the mm who is the future ruler so the main characters have to deal with finding out who wants him assassinated and how to break the spell. There is some travel and political intrigue and I liked how the main characters started by not liking each other getting to know each other and see the good side of each other. The fmc is strong and a warrior she has a chronic illness similar to Celiac disease so I thought that was a good rep. The mmc is a softie and shy, he loves reading and books which I always like in a book. There are plots, magic, coup attempts, and political intrigue that comes to a headway in this cozy romantasy. Thank you Bramble for this arc.

BEHOOVED takes a time-worn trope - arranged marriage with a mysterious foreign king - and sparks it with new life by turning that man into a horse. This is a book that's fully aware of its (somewhat ridiculous) premise, going all in on the horse jokes, and it's fabulously fun. The banter was a delight. I loved seeing Bianca as an openly and unapologetically bisexual woman, as well as chronic illness rep that was an essential part of her character from page one. And of course, I'm endlessly weak for a soft boi male love interest, who'd rather cozy up with a book while his wife does the stabbing.

The perfect novel for every horse girl!

This story follows Bianca, the princess who is to be wed to a king of their opposing kingdom. When things go awry, the king to be is turned into a horse and the two must figure out a way to reverse the spell.

I loved the adventure and romance between the two! The buildup and the way they cared for each other and made up for each others weaknesses. I actually hope we get a second book with Tatiana as the MC!

Also omg He picks her up bridal style carries her to bed after she falls asleep!

As few complaints I had were why did they have their first kiss and immediately bone? Like she was still healing did they really need to consummate it RIGJT NOW? Give it a little time for the romance so sink in we didn't need to go 0-100

I also wish we followed up on the politics at the end of the novel! So much was revealed about the truth of the treaty and their true reasons for having to be married I really wish we saw what happened between their kingdoms and her possibly finally standing up to her parents! Again I would read tf out of a book 2

This is an arc but this quote had me rolling:

"Stubborn ass, no- horse."

I know that a book about a princess who accidentally turns her husband into a horse sounds crazy, but this was actually really good!

Behooved is a very sweet fantasy rom-com about Bianca, a noble lady who is forced into marriage with Aric, a prince from another kingdom. It turns out that the entire story behind the marriage has a hidden agenda—enemies are plotting to take Aric's throne and even his life. On top of that, the hero turns into a horse, and they must do everything to break the curse.

I would say the book leans more toward a rom-com than a classic romantic fantasy. It’s perfect for those who, as children or young adults, read My Lady Jane and are now looking for something similar, but for adult readers. The book is very fast-paced and can be finished in one sitting. The story doesn’t really stray from the usual tropes, but that’s not a flaw. Despite that, there are a few interesting twists in the plot.

I also really liked the characters. Bianca is a relatable heroine, and Aric is probably my favorite type of MFC—a slightly grumpy cinnamon roll who would rather be lost in books than fight with a sword. A positive aspect of the story is the good representation—Bianca, the main character, has a chronic illness based on celiac disease. The world in the book is queer-normative, which is reflected in the secondary characters as well.

One small quibble I have is with the way the relationship between the main characters was initially developed. The initial mutual dislike between them was based on a miscommunication trope, which I don’t like and rarely makes sense for adult characters. Besides that, I felt Bianca spends a bit too much time in her head, reflecting on how weak she is and what weakness means, which gives the book a somewhat preachy tone at times.

However, I still really enjoyed the book and read it with pleasure. It's a successful debut novel. I’m looking forward to more from this author.

Thank you NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you M. Stevenson, Tor Publishing Group and NetGalley for the ARC!

𝑩𝒆𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 was a magical read. The world was immersive and rice; where the world-building was strong but still cosy.

It was a heart-felt read that I did not expect to enjoy this much. It's a tale of two opposing kingdoms, where a chronically ill duchess who does not have magic in a magic filled society is forced to marry the King of the neighbouring country, a bookworm who got cursed to turn into a white stallion during the day.

The chemistry between Aric and Bianca was sizzling from the very beginning and I loved seeing how it developed overtime during their adventure. The tension and slow-burn between them had me hooked and the book had some spice but it did not encompass the entire book.

I appreciate how the author set the world in a queer-normative world where there are also badass lesbian lady knights and generals! The treatment of Bianca's 'condition' was well done. The representation was very respectful and done with thoughtful intentions.

Every side character had very good motivations and development in general. I loved reading about Marya, Tatiana and Catalina. They also provided a touch of levity in situations where things trended darker.

I enjoyed the road journey a lot. I think that made feel like I needed more and more to read about these characters and made it even more cosy. This book honestly was so healthy to read about that I praise the author for the mental health represention. There is so much thought put into this book and it turned out to be an amazingly crafted tapestry of adventure.

I cannot wait for the sequel!

I would like to thanks the publisher and NetGalley for providing me an ARC of "Behooved" by M.Stevenson.

2,5⭐️

I didn't have a lot of expectations for this book; the summary sounded fun, reminding me of " The Swan Princess," even though here it's the prince who turns into a horse. I was really surprised by the beginning; while I thought the writing lacked descriptions and depth, I found myself very invested in the story. The first 145 pages (40%) were very good: fast-paced but with a strong foundation of world-building. Despite the seriousness of the story (arranged marriage), there were fun moments (I laughed a lot). And then... I don't know what happened; maybe I had expectations, and that's why I was so disappointed with how the story evolved.

One of my biggest problems is the target audience of the book; it's written and reads like a YA, but it's not. The MCs are 26 and 28 years old, yet they acted like horny teenagers to me. There is a lot of emphasis on physical appearances and attractions. I wasn't expecting any spicy scenes, and while they weren't very detailed, it was so cringe-worthy... I am not a big fan of spice, but that doesn't mean it can't be well written; however, here... I almost died from embarrassment.

The romance lacked feelings, emotions, and a real bond between the characters. It was flat; I felt like they just liked each other because they appreciated how they looked . The focus was too much on fleshly desire. When I am told a book is a slow burn, I am expecting yearning, longing, and not sex scenes at not even 50% of the book. I gave up on a swooning romance when Bianca said to Aric (not even halfway through the book): "I always wanted you," because at the beginning, she said again and again that she despised him. It's an arranged marriage; they spoke once before marrying, so explain to me how she could want Aric from the moment she laid her eyes on him . This is not romantic feeling, but physical attraction.

Bianca was fine at the beginning; the representation of her chronic illness is good , but it doesn't make for a strong FMC. For someone 26 years old, she thinks like a 16-year-old and is too focused on the feelings of Aric's body against hers . Also, she is badass, and it's the kind of FMC I like the least because strength isn't just about how you wield a sword. It's a shame because I really liked her background and her relationship with her family. On the other hand, I liked Aric a lot. He is kind, compassionate, passionate, and funny (even though he is described as cold and aloof in the summary). I loved his way of thinking, and it's a real change from all the love interests you can find in romantasy.

As for the plot , it was somewhat predictable. I wasn't surprised at all, and since I had enough of Bianca, I just wanted it to end soon.

It's the first book by M. Stevenson, and while it wasn't for me, I think it will be enjoyable for people who like romantasy and want light reading. There were good ideas, but it lacked enough depth and investment on my part to really love it (plus the cringe sex scenes).

This is my first ever ARC review- I feel like I don't need to summarize the book because I am not sure I could do any better than the official summary! But I will say that I really enjoyed reading this!

I particularly loved the sweetness of the romance and the character growth that happens within the story. There was a little bit of what I would call modest spice-nothing overt. The yearning between the two MCs was excellent. I love how their relationship grew and progressed.

The FMC’s mysterious disability representation was also a nice touch. She was able to be strong while also having what is perceived as a weakness and was still successful throughout the book.

The MMC was thoughtful and misunderstood and I love a misunderstood sad prince! He had his own weaknesses to cope with and the fact they were thrust together almost against their will but still fit with each other in the end was great.

The quest to break the curse and save the kingdom was exciting and intriguing. I was engaged the entire way through this book waiting to see what happens next. I want to read more honestly- I want so much more from this world where magics are different between neighboring kingdoms and why! I want to know more about some of the side characters! I want to know how the relationship between Aric and Bianca progresses over time! I am really looking forward to the potential for more from this author!

I do wish there was an epilogue- maybe there will be in the fully published version. Or perhaps we will get lucky with a sequel to expand upon the world.

A NetGalley success!!!!

@rowan this one is about horses and also the author has Celiac disease sooooooooooo

3.5 stars because, while there are flaws, I did find this book quite funny. I mean, it's called BEHOOVED and it's about a guy who turns into a HORSE. Not to mention a heroine with a chronic illness who goes on a magical adventure. Overall, great concept and excellent execution.

First and foremost, the writing was strong. At no point did I find myself going "nobody talks like that," or regretting my decision to request this ARC. Considering my 2025 so far, this is REALLY GOOD. Honestly though, the writing was fun, witty, and flowed well. It was repetitive at times, especially when she would repeat who she had let down/how she was a failure, but I can see that also potentially being an important part of the story, so that might just be me.

The plot itself was fun. Nothing spectacular, and I DID have to skip a couple of scenes, but overall just an entertaining read. There were no weird plot things detracting from the story, and anything that I want to learn more about is something I can see being left out for the purposes of a potential sequel? Maybe me being hopeful.

The characters had very clear growth, which was nice. All of their decisions made sense in terms of who they are/where they are in their own personal journeys. At times it was hard to get a read on Aric and whether he actually trusted Bianca, but I prefer the not-knowing to a split POV.

The one thing I wish this book included was an inkling of Bianca and Tatiana's parents responding to the outcome of everything. Considering we start the story with them and they're key players in Bianca's decision-making, I would have loved some kind of confrontation with them.

But yes!! 3.5/5!!

Behooved is a whimsical subverted fairytale that throws reluctant allies-to-lovers together in an action-packed journey across a magical landscape. I absolutely loved watching Bianca and Aric battling their perceived shortcomings, and finding strength in each other—and themselves. Full of charm, romance, and swashbuckling adventure, this debut is so much fun!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bramble for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Bianca will always follow her duty, even if it means marrying the neighboring kingdom’s heir apparent to prevent a war. When a would-be assassin attacks her bridegroom on their wedding night, a spell gone awry leaves Aric transformed into a horse. A surly prince is hard enough to deal with, but dragging a horse’s-ass across the kingdom while uncovering a coup and finding a cure? ճ󲹳’s a total night-mare.

I appreciate a book that knows it has a wacky premise and decides to lean into it you will find no shortage of horse puns, and some of the wild scenarios they get themselves into reminded me of playing D&D with my friends. I agree with the author that this book falls on the cozier side of fantasy, in that the stakes of the story are medium-high but the tone of the book incorporates more comedy.

I liked that there was a bit of a gender-role reversal where Aric was book-smart, reserved and terrible in combat, whereas Bianca had a weapon quite literally up her sleeve at all times. I also enjoyed the chronic illness representation from Bianca and the conversations she had with Aric surrounding it. The characters have depth, and a big focus of their relationship’s development is overcoming their respective insecurities together.

That being said, I struggled to buy into their relationship and it sort of threw the rest of the book off for me. Their initial lack of communication made them read as much younger than their actual ages, and Bianca’s budding attraction towards Aric felt sudden to me. I wish there was more of a catalyst, a specific moment that made her view him differently. Also, I know this is marketed as a slow-burn, but once the physical aspect of their relationship begins, it progresses so quickly.

I also felt the book was weighed down by Bianca’s frequent self-reflections. I’m happy to be inside a character’s head and see their thought process, but I wish it was woven in more naturally. I think that's why I found myself enjoying the story more in the last third when the action takes over. Lastly, while the events of the story were entertaining, the greater plot/mystery surrounding the assassination attempt was, for me, fairly straight-forward and predictable. Because of this, I felt frustrated waiting for the characters to have certain realizations.

Overall, Behooved was a quick read full of heartfelt moments and strong character development alongside an action-packed plot. Certain elements kept me from getting invested fully, but I appreciate the unique concept and quality chronic-illness representation.

I’d recommend this title to readers that

find cozy fantasy just a smidge too cozy
never quite grew out of their horse-girl phase
think a man with a book is sexier than a man with a sword

4.75. Thank you NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for the ARC.

I'll just first preface that Behooved is silly, whimsical, and definitely focuses more on the romance than the fantasy worldbuilding. The mystery and the main antagonist aren't really that deep or multidimensional respectively. I needed to be sold on the romance first and foremost above everything else for me to like to this book.

Fortunately, it hits all the necessary checkboxes on what I'd like out of fantasy romances: a relationship that takes well-enough time for the couple to organically fall in love, an attraction borne out of appreciation for the other's virtues & respect for each other rather than OH NO THEY'RE HOT, appropriate stakes that it doesn't feel jarring when the couple starts having sex in the midst of it all, and none of that weird bioessentialism. Oh, and bi4bi protagonists!

After a rocky start where tempers flew between the royal newlyweds Bianca & Aric, once they realize they were both unwitting pawns of a greater scheme and that the other wasn't as awful as they expected, they quickly settled in a likeable civility with each other. Aric even apologized for his rudeness towards her. Even though he was misled into having a less than flattering preconception of Bianca's character and so his initial frostiness was understandable, he still didn't excuse himself for his poor treatment. After which, he really bloomed into such a charming love interest for our heroine. I have little patience for bickering between love interests that are meant to pass off as ~sexual tension~ but aren't that necessary when you really think about it.

I love that they actually took the time to get to REALLY know each other, making up for the lack of courting they never got to do before their rushed arranged marriage. They learnt about each other's passions, and most poignantly, their respective insecurities as children of royals. One of the tropes I tend to find frustrating in multiple fantasy romances is at least one-half of the couple insisting on keeping secrets from the other. In Behooved, Bianca is hesitant of confiding in Aric about her chronic illness due to being taught her whole life to keep her "weakness" to herself lest she be exploited by others. But Aric finds out about it soon enough since she can't exactly hide it completely while both are on the run, and he is just freaking observant of his wife. And once that Secret is out of the way, it makes their relationship all the more stronger. Aric is tender and attentive to Bianca's needs, and even validates her when she berates herself for being too ill.

"Strength isn't about what your body can do. It's about how you respond to adversity."

No but I ADORE how both of them grew to believe in each other when they themselves did not. Bianca sees Aric's gentle heart, love for books and respect for the environment as important traits to becoming a good ruler. Aric sees Bianca's selflessness and compassion to protect others at her own expense as traits that make her strong. And for the first time, the parts of themselves that they have always felt ashamed of were validated by someone else. Is it any wonder that they fell in love? I didn't even mind the Only One Bed trope being used here, because I do find it more interesting when it's a married couple feeling self-conscious about it, which is something even a little bit subversive.

(Perhaps my only teeny tiny nitpick about their romance is when they confess their love for each other, there's that line of mutual "I wanted you from the moment I saw you", which ... looking back, I don't buy because there was a lot of apprehension from both of them towards this arranged marriage. And I didn't get Love At First Sight vibes.)

Was that what love meant: knowing a chink in my armor existed, yet believing, however recklessly, that no blade could find the gap?

The disability representation we got in Bianca was written sensitively and wholesomely, which isn't too surprising given how the author M.Stevenson also has celiac disease. I love that Bianca is the more "active" of the couple; she enjoys fencing and is more trained in weaponry as opposed to Aric. One thing I also appreciated was that she's not portrayed as some kind of "Super Disabled Person". That her chronic illness is something she can just Overcome If She Puts Her Mind Into It. The story doesn't imply that all she needs is to do is try hard enough, or push herself enough. Bianca experiences flares at inconvenient timings; it's not something she can control. She doesn't get cured, and all she can do is manage her symptoms. There's a respect for Bianca's body and condition with her receiving support in the form of accommodations in mind to help her cope.

The side characters don't exactly get as much development since the story largely focuses on Bianca & Aric, but I do find them charming enough. Particularly Bianca's lesbian twin Tatiana, and Aric's righthand woman Marya. Spin-off, anyone? The queernormativity is a delight. I would've preferred an extended ending where Bianca confronts her parents for the mess they put her in (as well as their shitty parenting), but it's not a huge deal that we didn't get it.

I read this in two sittings! I really love this as a debut, and the dynamics between Bianca and Aric are really fun and they were both charming characters! I really adored the romance and thoroughly enjoyed Aric's soft boy characterization being juxtaposed with Bianca's headstrong approach in particular. The spice we get was a pleasant surprise as well. 👀

This could've been a 5 for me, but personally the FMC's inner thoughts got a bit too repetitive and that distracted me. There were some other repetitive details in the first half that I kept noticing too, which I feel made the pacing hiccup some, and added to the YA vibes in the writing style. Some parts of the plot were predictable, and I actually have many questions that probably won't be addressed (mostly related to the world + politics) since I'm pretty sure this is a standalone, but it was still nice overall!!! The various tropes and reps that were mentioned by the author for this book was well done, I think! I just wish the bi4bi was stronger for one of the characters.

Can't wait to see what Stevenson does next!!!

Update:

I thank Netgalley, Hodder & Stoughton and M. Stevenson for sending me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

I'll start by saying that this book was entertaining, and super easy to follow. I'd say it's a fast paced fantasy rom-com.

Bianca, our protagonist, is a stoic, responsible, dutiful noblewoman (in her mid twenties) who must marry the king of a neighboring country. But magic happens and he becomes a horse! And there's a coup! It's up to Bianca to make this right again, while also dealing with severe pain.

The world-building and magic (and its use) were kept short and sweet, providing only the necessary details.

The political intrigue is more a side topic, as a reader you don't get to see much to it, since the story follows the relationship between Bianca and Aric, from reluctant allies to lovers. They are interesting because they are not your typical heroes. Both fight their battles in silence and suffer because of less to no agency.

The book also discusses themes like illnesses, natural resources, power and responsibility, animal extinction and problematic families, while also keeping the fun, adventurous atmosphere. (So no one will feel like being lectured!)

Reallllly wanted to love this. I've been craving some good horse girl whimsy lately and My Lady Jane (tv adaptation, yet to read the book) was a hit, but something about Behooved just didn't come together in the way that I had hoped.

Bianca is a solid protagonist, the chronic illness rep was such a good choice for this story and I neeeeed to see more of it on my shelves, but Behooved had a hollowness to it that sucked a lot of the emotional impact of her struggles out of the reading experience.

I was expecting whimsy, silliness, a ridiculous number of horse puns - and they are there! - but it doesn't lean hard enough into the romcom genre to give it that popcorn appeal, and it equally doesn't have the narrative depth to keep my interest with intrigue or suspense. The storytelling is neither playful nor serious, occupying a somewhat awkward middle ground. Ultimately I just wasn't invested in the protagonist's quest or the romantic pairing.

My rating system:

✧✧✧✧ - loved it, some technical flaws
✧✧ - liked it

Behooved is a cozy fantasy featuring an arranged marriage, a curse gone awry and both bi and chronic illness rep. The story follows main character Bianca as she is sent to the neighboring kingdom to marry their new king and ensure peace in the realm. On their wedding night her new husband is turned into a horse by a misplaced spell after an assassination attempt. What follows is a slow burn romance as the two of them are forced to travel across the country in search of a cure for the spell and figuring out who was behind the assassination attempt.

There’s a lot of traveling, bonding and political intrigue that kept me invested in the story. The romance is also really sweet and I love how natural the growth of Bianca and Aric’s relationship is as they slowly start to trust and appreciate each other. The book is also really heartwarming with how it deals with people's perceived flaws, and especially unlearning the perceive them as weaknesses. There’s both banter and spice, but the latter is not the focus of the story. Overall it’s a cute, lighthearted and enjoyable book that I just wished had been a bit more tongue in cheek with the humour. With that said, I'm looking forward to the authors future books.

First, thank you to Tor Publishing Group and NetGalley for the ARC!

Second, I loved this book. It’s just a generally fun book! Knowing the premise, I couldn’t help but laugh at the foreshadowing horse puns early in the story. The humor and ticking clock kept the pacing moving well.

I fell in love with Aric. I have a soft spot for a nerdy, introverted prince 🥰 Without giving too much away, I also strongly identified with how he feels at a party 😅 And books are also my favorite weapon, both in a fight and in connecting with people.

Bianca is also a wonderful character. Her strength is undeniable. I love the theme that overcoming a weakness to accomplish something is actually a sign that you are stronger than the person who accomplished the same thing without having the weakness to overcome.

And I can’t close this out without making reference to the representation in this book. The queer normative world was refreshing in a way that I wasn’t expecting. I didn’t realize it was something I needed until M. Stevenson so expertly gave it to me. The disability rep, though, is what sets this book apart. Not just because disability rep is so rare, but because it highlights that there are so many different kinds of heroes and anyone, ANYONE, can be a hero and lead the quest we all dreamed of going on as kids.

So in short, this is a fast, fun read with many important messages you don’t even realize you’re getting because it shows people just as they are, living their lives, and kicking a** 😊

Fingers crossed for a sequel! 🤞🤞🤞 I just want more of this world!!!

Horse girlies you have been summoned! (words I never expected to say while writing a book review). Behooved is a whimsical, lighthearted rom com that follows Bianca, who agrees to an arranged marriage with the Prince of a neighboring kingdom. After a wedding night assassination attempt goes awry, her new husband is cursed to spend his days as a horse and his nights as his handsome former self. This book was absolutely adorable and had me giggling and kicking my feet until 3am. While a bit predictable, it was an easy to follow, low stress read and I enjoyed it immensely.

What I loved

🐴 arranged marriage
🐴 disability/chronic illness rep
🐴 cozy fantasy
🐴 enemies to lovers
