Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.
Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.
Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.
Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).
Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. আহ! কী নে� এই গল্পে। গোরস্থান, প্রাচী� পকেট ঘড়ি, কলকাতা� পুরন� এক পরিবারের ইতিহাস, প্ল্যানচেট, এন্টিক শিকারি- একটা গোয়েন্দ� গল্প জম্পেশ হওয়ার জন্য এর চেয়� বেশি আর কি চাই।
গোরস্থান� একটা গা� ভেঙ্গে পড়ে আহ� হন একজন� এত জায়গা থাকত� গোরস্থান� কে�, সে� তথ্য অনুসন্ধা� করতে� সেখানে ফেলুদা� পদার্পন। গিয়েই দেখত� পেলে� গডউই� নামে কারো� কব� খোড়� হচ্ছে। কিন্তু কে�? অনুসন্ধানে� ভারট� না হয� ফেলুদা� ওপরই থাকল�
জটায়ু এগল্পে আবার� প্রা� খুলে হাসত� বাধ্� করেছ� আমায়। "দোহা� পামা� সাহে�, দোহা� হামিলট� সাহে�, দোহা� স্মি� মেমসাহেব- ঘাড়টি মটকি� না বাবা, কাজে ব্যাগড়া দি� না।। তোমর� অনেক দিয়েচ, অনেক নিয়েচ, অনেক শিখিয়েচ, অনেক ঠেঙ্গিয়েচ...... ক্যাম্বল সাহে�, অ্যাডা� সাহে�, আর...হুহুহু... তোমা� নামে� তো বাবা উচ্চার� জানিনা... "দোহা� পামা� সাহে�, দোহা� হামিলট� সাহে�, দোহা� স্মি� মেমসাহেব- ঘাড়টি মটকি� না বাবা, কাজে ব্যাগড়া দি� না।। তোমর� অনেক দিয়েচ, অনেক নিয়েচ, অনেক শিখিয়েচ, অনেক ঠেঙ্গিয়েচ...... ক্যাম্বল সাহে�, অ্যাডা� সাহে�, আর...হুহুহু... তোমা� নামে� তো বাবা উচ্চার� জানিনা... "
জটায়ু না থাকল� এইসব উপন্যাসে� মজ� কম� অর্ধেক হয়ে যাইতো।� আর আম� একটা কথ� ভাবি, ফেলুদস� এই ইন্টারনেটে� যুগে জন্মাল� কি সুন্দর হইতো�

পুরো ফেলুদা সমগ্রে আমার অন্যতম পছন্দে� একটা গল্প� "কলকাতায় ফেলুদা" বইয়� এই গল্পটা পড়ে যেভাবে মজ� গিয়েছিলাম, সেখা� থেকে� পুরো দু� খণ্ড সমগ্� কিনে ফেলা! এখনো খু� শিহর� হয� গল্পটা মন� পড়লে। ফেলুদা যেভাবে ফ্যামিলি ট্রি বানিয়� ফেলেছিলে�, তারপ� পকেট ওয়া�, প্ল্যানচেট আর� কী কী যে�! ইশ, এখ� মন� হচ্ছ�, কতদি� ফেলুদা পড়ি না!
সত্যজি� রায়ের কাছে আম� চিরকৃতজ্�, আমার কৈশোরটাক� এম� বাংল� ডিটেকটিভ গল্পগুলো দিয়� মাতিয়� রাখা� জন্য :')

জম্পেশ গল্প! একদম কুইন্টেসেনশিয়াল গোয়েন্দাগির�! এরকম গল্পের জন্য� না গোয়েন্দ� গল্প পড়া� ঝড়ে� কবলে পড়ে এক ব্যাক্তি� আহ� হওয়� থেকে গল্পের শুরু, এরপর সে� উনবিংশ শতাব্দী� এক সাহে� পরিবার, লখনৌয়ের নবাব, আর একালের এক ধনকুবে� � কলকাতা� ইতিহাস নিয়� উৎসু� এক লো�, এব� অবশ্যই ফেলুদা- সবমিলিয়� এক দারু� গল্প�
এই উপন্যা� থেকে তেমন আশ� ছিলন� আমার� ভেবেছিলা� ম্যাড়ম্যাড়� কিছু একটা হব�, কিন্তু একদম চমকে দিলে� লেখক� আমার পড়া এখ� পর্যন্� ফেলুদা সিরিজে� সবচেয়� ইউনি� গল্প� এটি। পড়ে তৃপ্তি পেয়েছ�!
এই উপন্যা� থেকে তেমন আশ� ছিলন� আমার� ভেবেছিলা� ম্যাড়ম্যাড়� কিছু একটা হব�, কিন্তু একদম চমকে দিলে� লেখক� আমার পড়া এখ� পর্যন্� ফেলুদা সিরিজে� সবচেয়� ইউনি� গল্প� এটি। পড়ে তৃপ্তি পেয়েছ�!

বলতে� হচ্ছ� এখ� পর্যন্� ফেলুদা� পড়া বেস্� বই হচ্ছ� এটা। গোরস্তান� হাঙামা হুজ্জু� কর� একটা পেরিগা� রিপিটারে� জন্য কত মানু� লড়া� কর� শে� পর্যন্� পে� লবডঙ্কা। লালমোহনবাবুর গাড়� আর হরিপদে� আইকিউওয়াল� কা� কারবার� এযাত্রায� রক্ষ� হল ফেলু মিত্তিরের।

Yet another great adventure by Feluda. This time, Feluda and team did not have to go visit any other city, they found it in their hometown i.e. Calcutta. The matter which seemed just like a little puzzle in the beginning, turned out to be one of the complex mysteries solved by Feluda.

ফেলুদা� কলকাত্তাইয়া অ্যাডভেঞ্চারগুলি� মধ্য� শ্রেষ্ঠত� হল 'গোরস্থান� সাবধান!'� সেটি দিয়েই এই বছরে� ৫০তম বই পড়া কমপ্লি� করলা�, তিনমাসের� কম সময়ে। আশ� করছি এইবারে� ২০� বইয়ের অ্যানুয়াল টার্গে� সম্পন্� করবই�
সাউথ পার্� স্ট্রি� সেমেট্রি, কত না ব্যক্তিগ� স্মৃতি জড়িয়� আছ� জায়গাটা� সঙ্গে। দুটো টিকি� আজ� সযত্নে সাজানো আছ� ওয়ালেটে� গোপনতম প্রকোষ্ঠে। সে� জায়গা� প্রেক্ষাপট� ফেলু কাহিনি! চূড়ান্ত উপভো� করলাম।
কাহিনি� ঘটনাক্রম প্রসঙ্গে আলোচনা কর� বাতুলতা। বইয়� না পড়লেও সিনেমায় তো প্রায় সবাই-� দেখে ফেলেছে এতদিনে�
সে� সিনেমা� থেকে এই বইয়ের কাহিনি� ঘটনাক্রম অত� অবশ্যই আর� বেশি ডিটেলড� এই কথ� তো প্রতিবার� বল�, এবারেও তাই।
সবচেয়� উল্লেখযোগ্� ব্যাপা� হল - এই কাহিনি� রহস্যে� কার্যকার� সম্পর্� খুবই বিশুদ্ধ। তা� গল্পের কাঠামো শক্তিশালী� শুধু শেষে� রিপিটা� উদঘাটনের ব্যাপারট� একটু বেশি� নাটকীয়, ওট� না করলে� লজিক্যাল� প্রবলে� ছি� না� তব� একটা চমকদার এন্ডিং-য়ের জন্য এটুক� ক্রিয়েটিভ লিবার্টি শিরোধার্য।

সিধু জ্যাঠা আর� বিশদ� জানা� এই বিদেশি টমাস গডউই� একসময়ের দিল্লি� নবাব সাদত আলিক� বাবুর্চি� ন্যায় এম� অপূর্ব বিলিতি রান্না খাইয়েছিলে� তাকে নবাব এক মহামূল্যবা� উপহা� দে� "পেরিগ্যা� রিপিটা�"�

কলকাতা� গোরস্থান� গা� পড়ে নরেন বিশ্বা� এর মাথা ফেটে যায়� সে জায়গাটে গিয়� টমাস গডউই� এর কব� খোদা� কর� দেখত� পারে� � নরেন বিশ্বা� এর সাথে দেখা করতে যেয়� তা� ভা� গিরী� বিশ্বা� এর সাথে� দেখা হয়। গোডউইন এর বংশধ� মার্কা� গডউই� এর সাথে দেখা কর� সেখা� থেকে টমার গডউই� এর আইভেরি কাসকেট নিয়� এস� সেখানে ছিলো গডউইনে� মেয়� শার্লট এর ডাইরি। সেখা� থেকে� জানা যায় সে টমাস গডউইনে� কবরে একটি অনেক দামী ঘড়ি "পেরিগ্যা� রিপিটা�" ছিলো� সেটা� জন্য� কব� খোদা� কর� হচ্ছিলো। � ব্যাপারে আর� জানত� মহাদেববাবু� বাসায় যায় ফেলুদা� ভদ্রলোকে� ঘড়ি� শখ� তিনি জানা� যে পেরিগ্যা� রিপিটারট� সে� পাবে ফেলুদা পাবে না� তারপ� তদন্� কর� বে� হয� যে নরেনবাবু� ভা� গিরীনবাবুই কব� খোদা� করছিলো� তা� ভা� সেখানে পৌঁছ� গেলে তাকে বাড়� মেরে অজ্ঞান কর� দেয়� আর গিরীনবাব� সে� ঘড়ি বিক্রি কর� দিতো মহাদেব এর কাছে�

Quite a short and engaging read!
The plot is not steeped in unnecessary complexity plus it is the simplicity that held my attention.
Feluda immediately became my favourite character. His sharp wit and calm persona will definitely remind you of Sherlock Holmes.
The story is set in Calcutta and the plot revolves around a hundred years old grave that has suffered disturbance by people with ill intention. Feluda is adamant to find the criminals. What is their motive? Why are they after this particular grave?

Honestly, I didn't care much for this one. Somehow the story was both convoluted and predictable at the same time. There were too many red herrings and it just went in every direction.

Feluda was originally written by Satyajit Ray for the children’s magazine ‘Sandesh�. The popularity of the series was such that Ray went on to include a few adult themes in the later stories when he realized that even adults were enjoying the series.
I actually read Feluda before Agatha Christie and as such Feluda was my introduction to detective fiction. The best part of the stories is the evergreen manner of Ray’s narrative. I remember reading ‘Baadhshahi Angti� which was written in 1960s and when I visited Lucknow in 1990s, I could still recognize the places described in the book. The other thing that I loved about the series was that in every story we learned something new � be it about geometry or about telepathy.
Absolutely and irrevocably in love with Feluda and his adventures � forever a fan.
