Judge This

Rate this book
A fun, playful look at the importance of first impressions—in design and in life—from acclaimed book designer Chip Kidd.

First impressions are everything. They dictate whether something stands out, how we engage with it, whether we buy it, and how we feel. In Judge This, renowned designer Chip Kidd takes us through his day as he takes in first impressions of all kinds. We follow this visual journey as Kidd encounters and engages with everyday design, breaking down the good, the bad, the absurd, and the brilliant as only someone with a critical, trained eye can. From the design of your morning paper to the subway ticket machine to the books you browse to the smartphone you use to the packaging for the chocolate bar you buy as an afternoon treat, Kidd reveals the hidden secrets behind each of the design choices, with a healthy dose of humor, expertise, and of course, judgment as he goes.

Judge This is a design love story, exposing the often invisible beauty and betrayal in simple design choices—ones most of us never even think to notice. And with each object, Kidd proves that first impressions, whether we realize it or not, have a huge impact on the way we perceive the world.

Chip Kidd

Chip Kidd is an American author, editor and graphic designer, best known for his innovative book covers.

Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Kidd grew up in a Philadelphia suburb, strongly influenced by American popular culture. While a design student at Penn State, an art instructor once gave the assignment to design a book cover for Museums and Women by John Updike, who is also a Shillington native. The teacher panned Kidd's work in front of the class, suggesting that book design would not be a good career choice for him. However, Kidd later received professional assignments to design covers for Memories of the Ford Administration and other books by Updike.

Kidd is currently associate art director at Knopf, an imprint of Random House. He first joined the Knopf design team in 1986, when he was hired as a junior assistant by Sara Eisenman.

Publishers Weekly described his book jackets as "creepy, striking, sly, smart, unpredictable covers that make readers appreciate books as objects of art as well as literature." USA Today called him "the closest thing to a rock star" in graphic design today, while author James Ellroy has called him “the world’s greatest book-jacket designer.

The beauty of TED talks books are that they're done by experts in whatever field is being discussed. You, the reader, can trust that they know their stuff- I find it comforting. The books, based on the 18 minute presentations, are not so long so that you feel overwhelmed or bored. I find myself branching out and exploring topics that I wouldn't normally be interested in because of their brevity. I'd never put too much thought into product design or labeling and Chip Kidd was just the guy to introduce it to me.

Take the billing on movie posters for example. I never knew that, by union contract, the names had to a certain size on the poster. Or, that there's a clearer font that could be used for improving the clarity of the names so that they can be read from further away, but it's never used. Who knew!

His dissection of the Diet Coke can and ad campaign was another of my favorite moments. Kidd comes off as funny as well as highly knowledgeable- one of the best combinations in my opinion.

The last, but not least, of my favorite moments was when we got to hear Kidd's thoughts behind why and how he designed the covers for some really impressive titles like , , or . Out of those three, Gulp drew my eye the most. When it first came into the library, I remember re-shelving it a couple of times, looking at its cover, and thinking "Wow, this is really different." And not different in a bad way. It was different in a way that made me want to pick it up and add it to my mammoth to-read pile. And, apparently, that was exactly what Kidd was going for.

If you enjoy Judge This, I'd recommend (Google reveals its elegant methods of internal organization) and (another TED talks book but about meditation instead of art design).

I received a free copy of this book through ŷ First Reads. Thanks for reading!

Far too short to actually do anything. Hopelessly self-indulgent for the problematic author. Also, rather misleading -- I'm led to think I'm getting a book of musings on the design aesthetics of the everyday items of our lives, but the bulk of the book is just the author telling me how he came up with ideas for the book covers he designs. I really couldn't care less about the forgettable designs of books I've never heard of.

It was fun to see some of the inspiration behind Kidd's designs, especially for his book covers, but I think the book totally fails at it's perceived purpose: to illustrate the importance of judgement and first impressions. It spends about 25 pages talking about that subject and the remaining 100 or so delving into his design process. His book covers are undeniably brilliant, don't get me wrong, and it's worth checking out just to get some background info on his thought process in creating them. I just think it's strange that this book of all books would pull a bait and switch like that.

Also, considering how many winks and nudges there are at the reader in this, Chip Kidd plays it completely straight when he talks about what kind of Chips he ate when he was a Kid. I found that odd.

If only I could convince Chip Kidd to design my house, its interior, my wardrobe, et al.... Can one be a fanboy of a graphic designer?

This slim book is quite simple: how do you weigh clarity vs mystery, two crucial elements, in design? Kidd makes his point on one page, in a few, succinct paragraphs, then illustrates the idea on the facing page. While there are many of his book covers used as illustrations, there are also photos of clothing, Google Earth images, furniture, and architecture. The world is filled with inspiration if you know how to look for it.

I'm not always the biggest fan of Chip Kidd's book covers. Sometimes awesome, but sometimes...

Well, it turns out that sometimes the stories behind the covers are better than the covers. Or maybe it's that I don't usually understand what Chip Kidd is referencing with his covers.

Fraud by David Rakoff is a good example. I never really understood that what was being presented was a book with a gratified cover. Now that it was explained, I like it better, but...maybe I'm just dumb. Or maybe it's not as obvious as Chip Kidd thinks it is.

Also, the cover for Jay Mcinerney's How It Ended is a mess. The colors are amazing, but it's a couple pictures stacked on top of each other in a way that I just don't get.

And I'll say this. It wasn't until it was totally explained to me that I knew what the hell was going on with Colorless Tsukuru by Murakami. I didn't know there was a hand, I didn't know the different colors represented different characters. I guess it's interesting to wonder if I'd have gotten it after reading the book, if Murakami is the kind of guy who doesn't need to sell based on covers so much. But I just wasn't feeling that one.

Now, all that said, the first half of this book is really interesting, posing objects and art on a scale from instantly recognizable and understandable to confusing and something that leaves the viewer pondering. The first part of the book asks a really good design question: Do I want this design to provide instant recognition and clarity (subway map) or do I want this design to intrigue someone (movie poster).

I think Kidd's covers tend towards the intriguing angle more often, which I can appreciate, but it's just not my style.

Anywho, it's a quick read, and if you're someone who gives a flying fuck about something like the design of book covers, totally worth your time.

#01 İLK İZLENİM HER ŞEY CHIP KIDD | (2018-0101)

I discovered Chip Kidd during a rabbit hole adventure through Ted Talk's Youtube channel. Since he's mainly a book cover designer, I was extremely interested in his work and process.

A continuation of one of his talks (I'm not sure which one), this book looks at how a design should either have clarity or mystery. And while neither is either good or bad, how it's used is the key to effectiveness.

This book had so much potential, but it just fell flat enough that I thought it was just an okay read. And, this is coming from someone who actively enjoys design, especially book covers. While I do like Chip Kidd and highly recommend watching his Ted Talk videos, the overall message was disjointed and got lost in translation. Plus, the writing style was irritating by the end, and it's only 120 pages.

This won't be everyone's cup of tea, and if design, in any way, shape, or form, doesn't pique any interest, I'd suggest skipping this altogether to save time.

Interesting title. When I started it I had no idea what it was about. It turns out its about graphic design. About what looks good and how it works. Well that is how it begins anyway and I enjoyed that.

What it quickly turns to is a narcissistic retrospective of the author's own work. He is a great designer, some of his ideas are fantastic but did I want to spend this much time listening to him tell me how great he is? No I didn't. I started to feel like a long advert for his own work and with that I lost interest.

It wasn't badly written. The images are good and there is real talent and craft in his work. The problem is that by the end of this book I just didn't care any more. It felt like the promise of the start of the book had been squandered. I would have far preferred to hear more of his views on everyday design.

The main and only idea of this bite-size volume is that everything that is designed (or designable) exists on a continuum between perfect clarity and perfect mystery - and that there's a time and place for either end of the continuum. The first third of this book consists of Mr. Kidd's musing on (and criticism of) various items, from posters on the subway to subway stations themselves. The remaining two thirds are one grand self-pat on the back, as he explains the thought process behind a number of book covers he designed.
In tone, Mr. Kidd seems to really, really want to be "down with the kids". If you're interested in design but know little about it, go with . And if your friends, family and generally loved ones are interested in design, please don't get them this book. I feel like I've put more effort into this review than went into the actual book.

That's when I found out how many book covers I admired had been designed by him such as , , and . The best part of this book is when Kidd reveals inspirations and thoughts behind popular examples from his work. It was a unique insight into the mind of a brilliant designer.
