And that someone is named Alora.

Determined to discover why his father wanted to help a “ghost, Bridger illegally shifts to 2013 and, along with Alora, races to solve the mystery surrounding her past and her connection to his father before the DTA finds him. You know, plot set-up doesn't have to be boring.

And just because it's YA, the story doesn't have to include every stupid YA cliche out there.

WHY did no one give this author the memo?!

I thought I was gonna get a cool sci-fi mystery thriller with this book, but instead I got a shitload of stupid high school drama, complete with weird-ass boy problems.

The premise for this whole thing was cool, but the execution totally sucked. The plot ended up being overly simplistic, the mystery was thin, the characters were flat and the dialogue alternated between awkward and dull.

I was bored throughout this entire book, but forced myself to read the whole thing with the hope that the ending would surprise me.

It didn't.

I usually really enjoy these types of books. Sometimes it's because the mystery/thriller aspect that goes hand-in-hand with time travel stories is enough to grip my attention, like with . Sometimes it's cuz the characters are so well drawn that I can't help but connect with them and root for a good outcome, like with . Sometimes the book is just so fricken weird that I can't stop reading, like with . But The Edge of Forever has NONE OF THOSE THINGS going for it. I regret buying it and I regret the precious free time I wasted reading it.

MY THOUGHTS
I love the idea of time travel, so when I found out that this book revolved around time travel, I had to pick it up!

This book has two points of view: Alora and Bridger. Alora is a teenager in 2013. She has been living a normal life until she begins to have memory black-outs at seemingly random moments. Bridger lives in 2146 and has been training his ability to time travel. On one such mention, he comes across his deceased dad, warning Bridger that he needs to go back and save Alora. Bridger doesn't know Alora, but he risks his future to illegally time travel back to finish what might've been his dad's last mission. But why is Alora so special?

I admit, I don't think you can ever go wrong with time travel. I, personally, loved the aspect of someone from the future changing the past. This is a concept that has been done before, but this time it was different. Usually, someone from our time travels from the past, but this time someone over 100 years in the future travels into the past. I loved this and I also loved seeing how the future society worked. Because of genetic manipulation, many people have the ability to bend space, time, and mind. I loved this idea and how it was explored!

This book was very evenly paced. There wasn't a whole lot happening at points, but there was definitely build up to the climax. I was able to guess some of the major 'plot twists' early on, but I really enjoyed seeing these come together and I was still surprised along the way.

As for romance, there is some feeling between them, but it's very long-lasting, so it never takes control of the plot. So, it gets two thumbs up from me.

IN CONCLUSION
Overall, this was a really interesting time travel read with a different take. I strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys sci-fi and time travel! As for a sequel, as far as I know, this is a stand-alone, but there is definitely room for more. If there is more, I'll definitely be reading it!

Her çeşidini okumadan edemiyorum.

Actual Rating Three Point Five Stars
This was a evenly paced, action packed time traveling story. The action and short chapters will definitely keep you engaged. The changing perspective between Bridger and Alora, was well done and the futuristic society described was cool. Including the idea of Calmer, a abundant anti-anxiety drug. The plot moves nicely and has a good amount of suspense.

But unfortunately the story never gives us quite enough to form deep attachments to the main characters. The term "wild out" is used way too many times to describe a character having a strong reaction to something. I had to mention it because every time I saw it, the context didn't give it a consistent meaning. This didn't really take away from the reading of the book, but to me it's the difference between a good book and a great book.

There was also a bit of slut shaming, where Alora feels slutty just because she has on a short dress. There wasn't alot of this but every time I see this in books for young girls I cringe inside. There are places where not much happens, but those parts of the book don't drag on. The end of the book seemed a bit rushed, but tied up things pretty well and definitely includes some surprises. Overall this was a good read. I believe this is a standalone, but sometimes authors can be persuaded to change that. If there are follow up books to this the author should explore more of what kind of society Bridger is from, since most of the book takes place in 2013.

I so needed something different and refreshing when I picked this up. The fact that time traveling, of any kind, is also one of my most favorite subjects to read about, just made it a huge bonus for me.

Which leads me to the top five reasons, The Edge of Forever, is the book for you:

1. You're a sucker for time travel and can't help but be fascinated with it, this is the perfect read for you as we travel with Alora and Bridger back and forth through time and space.

2. You not only like the idea of time traveling, but you like mysteries. Mysteries that are deep, dark and deep seeded. The type of mysteries that keep you guessing, keep you on your toes, and keep you turning the pages.

3. Engaging characters and storyline. Even though this story takes place in both 2013 and in 2146, with different point of views for each era, the different point of views are done well and both characters, Alora and Bridger, likable and relatable. You can't help but like them.

4. Time travel made simple. Easy explanations for time travel and the other abilities some people have, so much so, that it ends up being completely believable and tangible.

5. The last twenty percent of this novel is fast paced, heart pounding and leaves you on the edge of your seat. You are left sad that it is over and distraught that you don't have the next book sitting next to you ready to read.

Time travelling has always fascinated me. Imagine being able to change the future by changing the past, wouldn't you do it?

In 2146 young Bridger is on his first trip to witness an important event that will change the course of history together with his girlfriend Vika, however, things don't turn out as expected as a "ghost" from the past gives Bridger a message .

In 2013 Alora is in high-school with some friends and frenemies; an apparently regular teenager with a mysterious childhood who suffers from strange blackouts.

Needless to say , the life of these two characters intertwine in a surprising way. Both of them are very likable and charming, but they are far from being perfect and this book is far from being a usual sci-fi novel because there is MORE:

Time benders , space benders and mind readers.
Evil soldiers.
A psychopath killer
Mean girls.
Obsessive boyfriends.
Brave friends.
Neglected children.
Toxic parents.
Manipulative relatives.
Mysterious resemblances.
Clones.
Secrets.
Cool futuristic gadgets.
And romance.

Melissa E. Hurst has written a page turner , one of those books you need to keep on reading but you don't want to end.It is unbelievably her first novel and I will eagerly wait for the second one.

I would like to thank the publisher for this review copy.

Ever since I’ve read Outlander, time travel is slowly turning out to be my favourite type of concept to read. It’s mysterious and imaginative and if well done, it has the capacity to be a complete literary success.

And The Edge of Forever has both time travel and mystery and that just makes it so much better.

Alora, in 2013, is struggling with her parents identity—she remembers nothing about them. Everything that she knows, however little it might be, has been told to her by her Aunt Grace. And Alora is almost sure Aunt Grace is hiding the complete truth from her. If only Alora could prove it.

Bridger, in 2146, is in Time Bender, meaning his genes allow him to travel to the past. But on one such assignment, he sees his deceased father. And he is asked to save Alora. If only Bridger knew who she was. He eventually travels back to 2013 and in trying to save Alora, together, they discover a lot of things that they didn’t know about.

Alora’s voice was both whiney and courageous. I was confused throughout the book as to whether I liked her or not, but overall, I think she matured through the course of the book, which is a great thing, considering all the troubles she had to face throughout the book. I felt like her dialogues were a bit awkward (considering she’s from our age) and Bridger seemed more 2013-ish than her on several occasions. Bridger, I really liked. He was the ideal YA boy whose POV I loved reading. He was sensitive without being overly dramatic, and he was considerate without being a doormat.

I really liked the concept and the premise of the book. The book started out slow, picked up pace, was slow again and then the end was great. Both Alora and Bridger had a lot of difficulties before they even meet for the first time and though I understand that a base had to be set for Bridger to time travel to her at all, the beginning of the book did drag a bit and it took quite a lot of effort to keep reading. Nonetheless, I managed to hold on and it was so, so worth it. It was specifically the writing that kept me hooked to the book. Melissa E. Hurst brings a seemingly impossible concept to life in a way that made me really, really sad that the book ended where it did.

If you’re into Sci-Fi and okay with most secrets of a book being revealed at the end of it, then The Edge of Forever is something you should watch out for!

NOTE: THERE IS A GIVEAWAY POSTED ON MY ALONG WITH THIS REVIEW!!!

An ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. It has not, in any way, influenced my thoughts about this book.

Ever since reading Claudia Gray’s A Thousand Pieces of You, I have been a fan of time travel and parallel universe stories. This book is a proof of why I continue loving those.

The Edge of Forever was a fast read. Once I started it, I wasn’t able to put it down. This story was set in two different times: the years 2146 and 2013. The hero, Bridger lives in 2146 and the heroine, Alora lives in 2013. I liked these two characters for different reasons. I really liked Bridger’s character because of his natural curiosity and his commitment to the tasks given to him—at least, the tasks that matter. Alora, on the other hand, was very likable because I adore heroines who are kind of troublemakers or rule breakers. Alora showed that through going behind her Aunt’s back many times and generally not listening to whatever she’s supposed to do just to get answers about her blank past.

There are also other characters such as Grace, Alora’s aunt who’s very compassionate and always looking out for the well-being of her brother’s daughter. She’s one of my favorite characters because she brings something extra to the story, the same with Professor March. I don’t really know what to say about him but from the start, I don’t like him already. Don’t get me wrong, he was written very well and that’s why I feel like I couldn’t trust him. They are just two of some of the characters of this story. Each of them has their own role in helping Alora and Bridger find each other, helpful or not and they made the story even more interesting.

The plot of the story was what really reeled me in. Like I said earlier, I love time travel stories and the author made it even more interesting by adding a mystery to solve in the process of going back in time: who is Alora and what happened in her childhood? The Edge of Forever was told in alternating points of view of Alora and Bridger, sometimes overlapping time in the “present 2146 and the “past 2013. Melissa wrote each of their POV in unique voices which is sometimes a hard thing to do because there are books with male POV that still sounds like a female is talking just because the author is a woman and has a hard time thinking and speaking like a guy. But, as I said, here it was different. Bridger’s own character reflects the way he talks and thinks and is different from that of Alora. This seamless narration then manifested in the story because the flow was smooth and almost flawless. The subtle hints and clues to the mystery and the impending conflict were injected in between conversations and it made me take note of everything which in turn, made me excited. In other words, this book kept me on my toes. There were no dull moments and the anticipation and the build up of tension was note-worthy. In short: THIS BOOK WAS EXCITIIIIIING!!!

I’ve already said about what I liked about this book, but it wasn’t perfect, no. I usually talk about three things in a book: Plot, Characters and World-Building. I’ve said what I wanted to say about the former two, so now I’m gonna talk about world-building, which is what I felt knocked down a star on my rating. When I read a book, especially one set in the future, I want a lot of adjectives. I want colorful words. I want a lot of description because I want to be able to really picture the environment that the characters inhabit. Unfortunately, I found The Edge of Forever lacking in that department. The 2146 US wasn’t described very well so I didn’t know what to imagine. Is it all high-tech buildings and facilities or are there still “past houses, bridges, highways, etc? Even the gadgets weren’t properly described so I had to make it up in my imagination on my own, with just vague ideas from what little description there was in the book. Don’t worry! It wasn’t that bad and if you have a very vivid imagination, then this will be of little consequence to you. Aside from that, I didn’t find any problem with this book and I really enjoyed it.

Overall, The Edge of Forever was a really good read for a debut novel from Melissa E. Hurst. It’s thrilling and fast-paced and the mystery made me tear through the pages just to get my answers. The climax made me crazy and I dreaded the moment that it had to end. The last couple of chapters left me reeling, dazed with answers to the questions posted from the start and begging for the next book to find answers to more questions that sprung in the end. I hope my roller coaster of emotions will be felt by all when you get your own copies on June 2nd!

Thank you Cheryl, The Fantastic Flying Book Club and Sky Pony Press for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review. This, in no way, will affect my review of the book.

----------------------------------------

In the year 2146, Bridger traveled with his classmates in a school trip, but he saw someone he didn't expect to see - his dead father. This caused him to leave his post, and when he returned, he found Vika, his girlfriend unconscious. In the days following the incident, Bridger couldn't shake off what his father told him. "Save Alora." Bridger is determined to find out the truth, so he shifts back to 2013 to investigate on Alora to once and for all discover why his father wanted to save her.

Time travel is one of the magic words that would make me want to pick up a book. Add in a bit of romance and a hint of mystery? It'll make me want to get my hands on the book immediately. That is exactly what happened with this book, and I must say, it didn't disappoint. And another bonus for me, this book is told in alternating point of views!

The Edge of Forever was a fun and enjoyable read that kept me turning the pages for more. It was evident in how the story progressed that the plot of this book is very well thought of. I really loved how everything closed off in the end and how the mystery unraveled itself. The story and the romance also progressed in a timely manner. The mystery kept me from putting the book down, and I finished the book in no time.

The only thing that I didn't like about this book was how there were parts where the speech felt awkward, especially in Alora's point of view. You'd think that Alora is the one who's not from our time, but she's actually in 2013. Aside from that, however, I really enjoyed this story and I recommend it to those who are interested in time travel stories.

First of all... THAT COVER. Oh I love it. To be honest, I'm impressed when covers aren't just naked guy's chests because let's be real, those are pretty common now. But I digress. I love this cover because it's so different to any I've ever seen before.

The first 25% of TEoF were slow, I'll admit, but once I got past that... OH MY GOODNESS. Once I got in to it a fire blazing through my house couldn't have pulled me away. I was flipping pages like a mad woman til the end. But yeah, the beginning was slow and a little hard to fully immerse myself in.

I liked Alora's character. Alora, even through her inner turmoil and confusion, wanted to be a good person. At one point she was lying constantly to one person who meant the world to her and you could really see the struggle in her heart. She was headstrong and brave even from the beginning. I do wish there had been more character development with her but there's time for that in the sequel. I'm positive she'll impress me even more there.

"Trevor is so used to getting everything he wants, but it's time he realizes I'm not a prize for him to win."

Bridger was sort of the same in respects to the headstrong and brave traits. The difference was that he was brought up to be like that but in times of need he didn't falter and always, always put other people first. That's something I wish I saw in more fictional characters. There's always someone worse off than you and I feel like Bridger personified this saying, 100%. He didn't moan and whine and bitch he just did.

"For the first time since that whole mess on Monday, Alora really smiles. It's beautiful, lighting up her whole face. I love it.. I stare at her lips. I want to kiss her more than anything."

The whole host of secondary characters were so diverse. I didn't care for a good portion of them because they're crappy people but the others were so wonderfully whole as human beings. Alora's Aunt Grace for one. She took everything in stride and I really liked her character.

I also liked the split point of view chapters. Both were equally interesting and the chapters were perfect in length. I was never bored of one POV but I did appreciate the constant switch to keep me interested.

Now, romance is such a fickle thing in books. It can be perfect and heart-stopping but it can also be in-your-face and icky. It call fall flat or it can conquer. What I LOVED about the romance aspect in this book was that it didn't overshadow any part of the story. The main story lines were carried out and the romance was a sort of back drop that I liked looking at every once in a while.

"I focus on holding her and how her body fits perfectly against mine. How she smells of lavender and rain. The heaviness in my chest begins to lessen."

I had SO many theories when reading this story. Like a ridiculous amount. But even towards the end I was kept guessing and I was genuinely surprised by some of the twists and turns.

One of the reasons I don't tend to pick up time travel books is because they can be so confusing and really hard for me to keep up with whether that be because there's too much going on at once and I can literally feel my brain turning to mush or because whatever is happening is so far out there it's difficult to believe. Hurst did an incredible job of weaving the two main character's worlds together and I can easily say she's a genius within the time travel genre. It's not often I find a time travel story that doesn't make me want to rub my temples to make the headache go away.

I found myself gaping sometimes at how well the whole thing was intertwined because there were parts in the beginning that didn't make sense and then BOOM, I'm shown the relevance of the scene and by the end I had the urge to go back and read it all over again now that I knew the crazy that is Alora and Bridger's lives. I've never been so happy to be so confused. Seriously. I tend to shy away from time travel novels because the constant switching between time periods is inevitable and the dates can get confusing if not done right. I think the author did such a good job here and I can't praise her enough for this. The back and forth ran smoothly and interconnected so perfectly. There were no faults there whatsoever.

"My life could be the plot of a movie. The only thing missing is an evil madman and then it would be perfect."

Now in terms of content warnings there are almost none. I mean there's no sexual content whatsover, the most we get is a kiss, maybe two, I can't remember exactly... But that's the steamiest it gets. The only thing to watch out for is the language, especially during Bridger's chapters. I don't remember any major swear words but there are a few minor ones in there. Bridger actually uses, what I assume, are swear words more common in his own time that insinuate harsher ones from our time. Like he uses 'fure' a lot opposed to f-bombs.

But you guys, let's talk about something serious here. IT happened. Every reader's worst nightmare. That one line that just pops up out of nowhere in tons of books across all genres. It doesn't matter which way it's worded, it's still as painful and a little piece of my heart leaves with every mention of this sentence.

"I blow out the breath I didn't realize I'd been holding."

*Intense shuddering* WHY?!

Overall a wonderful read. I still have a ton of questions and there's a lot of material to cover here but hey, that's what sequels are for. This has such potential and I really hope the second book shines just as much as this one did for me.

The ending was a good one. Enough of a cliffhanger to keep me interested but not so much that I'm left in a dark corner to rock as I wait for the second book... I'm still hoping I wont be waiting too long though... If anyone finds out the release date for the second book do leave a comment for me!

I really loved the idea of this book, but I struggled with most of it.

Alora's voice came across as really young and at times, exceptionally whiny. She had all of these things happening to her, but just let it all happen. She didn't fight for anything. Bridger was only a hair better.

My main complaint was that nothing seemed to be explained. And the tech was just as confusing. By the end of the book, I still had no idea why the events took place.

As I said before, I did like the premise, I just wish it would have unfolded a little differently.

Basılmadan önce okumuş olmanın mutluluğu. :D

'The Edge of Forever' is a thrilling young adult science fiction novel that revolves around the concept of time travel. There are two main characters - Alora and Bridger. Alora lives in the year 2013, while Bridger lives in the year 2146. I wasn't sure how the book was going to work with two separate main characters who come from different worlds and times. The author was able to blend all of those elements together so smoothly that it seemed natural after reading for a short time. The two settings are written with a great amount of precision and detail, so each one felt realistic to me - like I was alongside the characters in each of them. The 2013 world is exactly like our world - except for the fact that there are some people born with Talents; abilities that allow them to time travel, read minds, or teleport. Alora's world was easy to slip into because of it's incredible similarity to our own. Bridger's world in 2146 is a completely different story. It's full of people with the aforementioned Talents - there are even schools dedicated to studying them and furthering one's abilities. Bridger is a time traveler, just like his father - who died only a month before we come to 2146. Bridger is still intensely grieving and his life feels like it's unraveling - especially after seeing his father at a routine school field trip to the past. He knows that he saw his dad there, even though he was never assigned to go there. His father gives him one short message - Save Alora. Bridger's entire life becomes a mission to figure out why his father was at that time and place, why he was risking everything, including his life, to break one of the biggest rules of time travel - to just observe and not interfere or change anything in the past. Bridger discovers that his father was determined to stop a murder from happening - the murder of a mysterious girl named Alora. Bridger decides to break all the rules himself and travels to 2013 to find Alora and figure out why she's so important and who would want to kill her. They work together to unravel the mystery of Alora's past and how it connects with Bridger's father, before time runs out. If they can solve the mystery, they might be able to prevent not only Alora's murder, but Bridger's father's death as well.

Like I mentioned above, I was skeptical about the book due to the whole time travel/science fiction concepts, along with the use of two main characters. I'm really glad I gave it a chance though, because it was much better than I expected or hoped. The author uses detailed imagery and vivid descriptions throughout the entire book, which made the characters and settings feel totally realistic. It was easy to immerse myself into Alora's world, mostly because it's just like ours. There weren't any huge leaps of imagination required, and things just felt normal. I think that writing Alora's world in such a way preps the reader for entering Bridger's future world in 2146 - where, of course, things are going to be incredibly different. I loved reading about all the different Talents and what they could do, along with learning about the DTA - the Department of Temporal Affairs. Usually time travel feels really fake for me in a book, but the author's writing style had me accustomed to both the idea of time travel along with the very different worlds we visit in the book.

If you've read any of my reviews before, you know how much emphasis I put on point of view. In my opinion, it can really make or break a book. With this novel, the author has two main characters - Alora and Bridger. The chapters are told from one character's point of view - usually in an alternating pattern. Since the story is told from the first person POV of both main characters, we really get to know each of them on a deeply personal level. First person point of view allows the reader an inside look at the narrator's mind - their thoughts, emotions, memories, dreams, fears, hopes, etc. There's no other writing style that allows such a profound connection between reader and narrator - and it's by far my favorite. By alternating the chapters by each character's point of view, the we get to experience what's happening in the story through the eyes - and minds - of both Alora and Bridger. I actually loved that the author wrote the novel this way. I loved the personal feeling of the first person POV, but I also enjoyed connecting so strongly to each of the characters and seeing/feeling how they did throughout the book. That was by far the best element of the story for me, and I honestly don't know if I would have had such a good experience if it had been written in a different way.

The plot was exciting and full of mystery - especially with it bouncing back and forth between characters and times. I was intrigued by Bridger's father's story and the reason behind Alora's death - and how it was all connected. I loved trying to figure everything out alongside the characters - especially when a curve ball was thrown in and left me reeling (which happened quite a few times). The author did a fantastic job of blending together several different genres - like science fiction, contemporary, time travel, action, adventure, and mystery - to create a masterfully written story like none other I've read. I very highly recommend this book to fans of the genre as well as to those readers who are looking for something a bit outside the norm and who enjoy reading a variety of genres!

I have to say, this was another pleasant surprise for me! It started off a bit slow, and was kind of a little cookie-cutter time travel-at first, and that is quite important to note! While I did have a few issues in the beginning (nothing specific, it just felt a bit slower and formulaic),The Edge of Forever really took off, and went in a really great direction!

Let's talk about these things I have enjoyed:

Yes, it was a time travel situation, but it was also a mystery. And I honestly didn't know where this mystery was going to go, which is always fun! There were a lot of twists, most of which I did not see coming.
Alora and Bridger were good characters, and the romance was slow and not the focus of the book at all. I would have liked just a bit more character development, but overall it worked for the story, since there was a lot of other stuff going on!
The time travel stuff was very unique and complex, butnotconfusing. This is huge for me, because a lot of times, I find time travel books to be either too simplistic, and therefore unbelievable, or too complicated and I end up just zoning out. This was refreshingly neither! There were multiple timelines, all kinds of rules, trust issues, and other stuff that might be spoilery, but through it all, I was able to keep up.
There's going to be another book! I read this book thinking it was a standalone, but when I finished I thought it hadtons of potential for a series. I wanted to find out what the deal was, so after a pretty good Twitter stalking session, I found out that the authoris working on a sequel, which I will most definitely be reading, because this was a very fascinating world!

Bottom Line:The Edge of Foreverwas fast paced and fun, with the perfect amount of mystery and time travelling shenanigans to keep me very intrigued!

I gave it 3.5 stars

One problem I see a lot in time travel books and books with multiple POVs is that it can get a bit confusing as to when, where and to whom something is happening. I am happy to say that this did not the case in THE EDGE OF FOREVER, everything was very easy to follow.

I really enjoyed both points of views. Bridger, who is from the future, is thrust into the past trying to continue the work his father died trying to solve. He doesn't know who he can trust, but he is determined to save Alora. Alora keeps blacking out and finding herself in different places. She is pretty freaked out by this as you can imagine. When a mysterious boy finds his way to her aunts bed and breakfast she is drawn to him and befriends him pretty quickly even though she is usually a loner. She also has the issue of her past. She remembers nothing of her parents or the time before she came to live with her aunt. Her aunt will not tell her anything and that makes her more curious.

Together they search for their separate answers until they realize everything they are looking for is connected in some way to the future. There is a bit of romance between the two, but it's very slow going and kind of on the back burner of everything else that is going on. There is some good action tucked into a good pace and an interesting world. Despite a few slow parts I found it easy to stay interested in the story.

I finished reading THE EDGE OF FOREVER with the feeling that the story isn't over, they seem to make that clear with the events at he end, so I will be on the lookout for information on book two.

3.9 (fight me for not rounding)

The book is fast-paced after the scene in the beginning, and to be honest lots of books are a little slow in the beginning. What made it worse was I was in like a year long reading slump, so It took my two months to read 13/55 chapters but 1 night(sitting) to finish the last 42 chapters so the book gets good after the first like 30% of the book.
The story had some holes, but hopefully they will be filled in the sequel. I liked the dark twist of the "popular girl gets jealous of a non-popular girl because her (ex)boyfriend asks her out" and some other twists. What I didn't like was how I kind of predicted a certain killer. But, overall nice generally easy read book, especially since this is my first time travel novel.

Guys, this is a FANTASTIC book.

Word of warning: this book is a little slow in the beginning. Do NOT give up. It's worth it.
