The third and final book in the None Shall Sleep Sequence.

Simon Gutmunsson is on the loose... Since the disastrous events of the College Killer case, the FBI is coming to terms with the fact that while catching one sociopath, they've released another. Now he's free, and on the run with his twin sister Kristin, and nobody in the FBI is smart enough to keep up...

Travis Bell's last investigation for FBI Behavioral Science nearly killed him. Supported by family and his partner Emma Lewis, now Travis just needs to get back on his feet. But Emma has been recruited to help the FBI hunt the ultimate sociopath, Simon Gutmunsson, and there's no way Travis is letting her go into this battle alone...

So in a journey that will take them from Moroccan souks to Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations, the stage is set for Simon and Kristin and Emma and Travis to meet up in an epic final showdown.

the fact the publisher didn't want to pick up book 3 is DISGRACEFUL, but I am so happy Ellie Marney is able to independently publish it. I love this series so much 😭🫶🏻

Majorrr spoilers for the whole entire book!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED!!

I want to start by saying I loved the first two books. I loved the story, I loved the writing, I loved Kristin, I loved Simon, and I loved the relationships between the characters, particularly the one between Emma and Simon, but more than anything, I loved Emma. I adored Emma, and to me, this entire book came off disrespectful towards her character. I can think of very few books that have managed to frustrate me the way this book has; and it would genuinely be an understatement to say this book was a disappointment, especially since it was my most anticipated read of the year.

Almost every single thing in this book made me upset and angry, but I have to start somewhere, so let me start with what I believe is the root of all the other problems:

Travis

I don’t think Travis is a bad character, but he is not a strong one in terms of personality, and he pales in comparison to almost everyone else in the main cast. He is not the type of character that could carry a book like this on his own, which is exactly what he tries and fails to do, and he for sure couldn’t do it after we read two whole books of Emma, aka the actually interesting main character who should've had the focus on her for all three books.

I knew this book wouldn't be like the other two when I realized that Emma was taking on a supporting role rather than being front and center, but despite this, I tried very hard to enjoy it, because, like I said, I loved the first two books, and the series held a very special place in my heart. I gave it my all, but there are a total of two scenes I didn’t dislike in this entire book, both of them being scenes focused on Emma and Simon's relationship, by the way—the relationship that should have been the focal point of this book rather than checks notes Travis and Simon? Travis and Kristin? Travis and his dad? Travis and the random FBI Agents? Travis and the goddamn bus driver?

Maybe this was just because of my personal views, but I did not care about Travis dead cop father the way I needed to in order to enjoy this book to any capacity. I didn’t care; I still don’t care. I didn't care about Travis inner conflict surrounding his involvement with the FBI, because why would I when all I’ve seen up until this book is the same people he considered working with using Emma to the point where I was recoiling whenever they talked to her?

It was OK to read about here and there when he was just Emma’s sidekick, who mostly got shot and passed out whenever something important was happening, but when it’s basically the 300 pages of a 370-page long book? I’m genuinely wondering why I was expected to see his problem as anything but a nuisance and a distraction and a waste of words.

I don’t believe Travis was ever meant to be the sole leading character, which what he basically was in this book, and I think trying to make him take on that role is what ruined the book. In most of the scenes I read, I couldn’t stop thinking “this would have been such a wonderful scene if it was Emma.

Most, if not all of it should have been about Emma and her relationship with the twins.
And so, this brings me to my next big problem with this book:

Emma and The Twins

Emma was, for whatever reason, stripped of her bond with both twins in this book, which was in many ways the driving force of the first two books.

Emma and Kristin had an understanding that was rooted in both being victims of serial killers, in different ways, sure, but they had a genuine bond that made so much sense. They understood each other, they tried helping each other, and they cared about each other. I thought there was something so beautiful in that relationship between these two girls who coped with their traumas in vastly different ways but still got each other in ways none of the men around them ever could.

The scene of Kristin calming Emma down after the tape reveal, despite everything, is still one of my favorite scenes ever. I loved that Kristin was the one who knew what to do and knew how to help Emma, and not Travis. Because what does Travis know about the traumas of those girls, really?

Nothing.

But for a reason I can’t figure out yet, in this book, the bond we focused on was Travis and Kristin. And…erm. okay? What am I supposed to do with this relationship that meant nothing until book number three?

Why, why, and why?

And Emma and Simon... Ohhhh Emma and Simon...

Their relationship was objectively one of the most captivating parts of this story. And in this book, it simply doesn't exist. Because for that relationship to have any meaning whatsoever, Emma would have needed to have some agency, which she didn’t.

“Travis, she says, somehow both serene and vengeful. ‘We really need to do something about Simon Gutmunsson.

These are the closing lines of the second book. And do you guys know what Emma does about Simon Gutmunsson? Fuck all.

They speak to each other like, what, four times? Five times maybe if we count the letter. I, of course, didn’t really expect them to have any more than that, because in this book Simon isn’t in jail for Emma to go visit whenever she needs to, so it’s not the lack of one-on-one conversations that irks me; it’s the lack of meaning and consistency in the scenes they do share. Or even in the ones where they just think of each other, talk about each other in the other ones absence.

Simon is not a regular person; he is a diagnosed sociopath who’s been killing in his friend circle in the name of art and transcendence for years. He is cruel, he is egotistical, and he is obsessive. And you’re telling me he casually hits Emma up to say, "I kill just to kill because I’m crazy like that, but I’m done now, so, bye."

What?

Do you expect me to believe he acted the way he did with Emma after somewhere around the 70% mark? The same Simon we’ve been reading for the past two books? I’m confused. It’s not that I think Simon is above violence or murder or anything of the sort, because he isn’t, but his behavior towards Emma takes a turn that I could not have seen coming in a million years, not in the way it was written. Does anyone else remember the time Simon threw away his freedom, his future with Kristin, and the opportunity to go on another murder spree by deciding to save Emma in the first book? Does anyone else remember the fact that he was on death row in book two because of that decision? Where was that relationship, that bond?

This whole thing had been a game for him, or a dance, as he called it, between him and Emma. Not him and the FBI, because he didn’t consider them worthy partners, and not him and Travis, who I did not believe he gave a fuck about the way this book tried to sell me. At its very core, the first book was Emma versus Anthony Hoyt, and the second book was Emma versus Peter Kirke, so this book should have been Emma versus Simon.

Travis doesn’t know Simon. How could he know Simon when he was mostly unconscious the few times they were in the same room?

But Emma does know Simon.

That was the whole point of her being forced into this investigation—the fact that it is unarguable that Emma understands Simon's mentality and his actions in a way these fully trained FBI agents fail to do. They needed her for this investigation, as they did in the previous ones, because after Kristin, she is the only one that he was open with in his own twisted way. So tell me why I read the words “trust your gut uttered to Travis regarding Simon. Why are we not listening to Emma? (If she has something to say at all, that is. Lol.) Why are we acting like these books have been leading up to a showdown between Simon and the son of the cop he killed a few years ago, because let's be real, that is one of like the only two solid connections between those two, and not Simon and Emma, the relationship we spent so much time exploring?

And so we’ve arrived at my third and biggest problem—the thing that made this book utterly unenjoyable for me:

Emma

For reasons I can't wrap my head around, Emma took the passenger seat in this investigation when she should have been the one leading the whole thing. There were chapters where she didn’t say anything that had any meaning at all. There were chapters where every thought in her head was solely about Travis.

Has Travis eaten? Has Travis taken his pills? Has Travis slept?

At one point, she called her therapist, not to discuss the deeply problematic cycle of abuse and exploitation that she’s found herself in with the FBI, where they force her to relive her traumas over and over again because they're too goddamn incompetent at their jobs, but because she was worried about Travis. I genuinely don’t think this book passed the Bechdel test. Her entire “arc happened through Travis, and I think that is the single worst thing you can do to any female main character, let alone to one with Emma's story.

Emma was the backbone of this series; I found her so endearing, so charming, so beautiful, so strong, and a joy to read. From the first page of the first book, I fell in love with her, and my love grew with each new page I read. I truly adored her, so know that it comes from a place of love and disappointment when I say Emma was not present in this book. She’d been stripped of everything: of her non-Travis relationships, of her leading role in her own story, of her agency to hunt down Simon for herself and not because she’s being forced to do so again, of her trauma that she spent two whole books learning how to reclaim and accept, of her rage at the world for failing her and other girls like her, of her rightful resentment towards the FBI and the force because of the danger and hurt they kept causing her, and of her drive to help the other victims. All I saw in this book was her name because her personality was nowhere to be found. And this is what I find so hard to understand because all of these had been shown in the first two books, repeatedly, and in ways I appreciated and enjoyed, too.

It seems, at the end of the day, Simon really was the one single character who knew and understood her, because he seems to be the only one startled by this hollow version of Emma.

The journey I expected her to take is instead taken on by Travis, who, like I said, doesn’t have the capacity to do it right. The focus on her trauma, which was one of the most appealing aspects of these books, is again given to Travis, whose trauma I, as a reader, just didn’t care about like that at all. Every meaningful relationship she has, yes, you guessed it, is given to Travis, who just did not have that type of deep relationship with any of these people.

I don’t think, in any case, that this was Emma being at some sort of peace with herself or her trauma, because everything that made her her was just not there. It was established in book two that Emma cannot separate herself from her trauma, that she can’t turn her back on the girl she used be, but she also can’t pretend to be that girl still. Because the things that she’s survived have changed her in ways that can’t be ignored no matter how much she tries. Her anger is a part of her that she learns to accept, her instincts are a part of her that she learns to trust, her new personality is something she learns to wear and stand up for. So why are they all missing?

This whole review is a mess, I know, but I’m genuinely hysterical about this.

I have so many more problems, like the handling of Simon’s character and even his relationship with Kristin, which I actually considered the saving grace of this book.

I appreciated the way his disorder was portrayed in the first two books, and I don’t understand where that understanding of his character disappeared to in this book.

I don’t know how many times I’ve said, “I don’t understand or asked, “Why? or some variations of those in this review or while talking about the book in general, but I know that I will never escape them while discussing it.

At what point did Travis become such an important character that we thought Emma, Simon, and even Kristin and their stories and personalities and relationships were justified sacrifices for him to take the spotlight?

I don’t know, and I don’t understand.

It’s 11 AM currently. I have a fever, and I stayed up all night for this book that I had such high hopes for, only to realize maybe I flew too close to the sun with this one. I wish I had some positive things to say, but I don’t, not right now at least; maybe I’ll add them later, if they come to me once I get over how upset it has made me enough to attempt to fix my guaranteed grammar and spelling mistakes. I really don't know.

Also, I want to add that Ellie Marney has been a sweetheart to me this whole time, she made sure I got this arc even after having technical difficulties several times, despite being on vacation, and I really appreciated that. I really wish I had something better to say about this book I know she worked hard on, but, alas, we’re here. I see what she wanted to do in this book, I just don’t think it was the book to do it in.

I don’t think I have ever been this terrified reading a book. Ellie has done it again. I was drawn in to book 3 immediately, and I did not prepare myself for the horror that awaited. Simon doesn’t fail to be captivating and horrifying as he does in the previous 2 books. I think this will be my favorite read of 2025. I may never recover. And that ENDING. ELLIE!!!!!!! 6/5*

Thank you Ellie for the ARC !!! I absolutely DEVOURED it.

I am deceased 💀

This trilogy is perfection, and the conclusion is 10/10.
I could not stop reading (sorry Bec! I left you behind 😂)

The slow burn friendship/relationship between Emma and Travis is so well written, I think they are one of my top pairings.

And again.
Simon Gutmunsson is chilling. I love it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

now that that’s out of the way: ellie marney has done it again! back with another suspenseful, poignant, & intense story that follows our favorite fbi teenagers and deranged teenage serial killer.

i thought this was a fantastic conclusion, especially regarding emma and travis’s character arcs & relationships with each other. we really got to see more of travis’s psyche, which i enjoyed a lot. their relationship felt real and had me kicking my feet tbh

this book had me on my TOES my god was i stressed out. ellie marney always does a great job of building suspense and dread - my heart was racing most of this book. though i had guessed a lot of the plot points, it was still extremely enjoyable to read.

my only gripe: parts of the conclusion fell slightly flat/felt underwhelming - but it wasn’t to the point where i felt it truly took away from the greatness of the book.

also i just need to say: the very very very last part.. jaw DROPPED!!!!!!!!!!

in conclusion: everyone needs to read this series ASAP. i’m honestly shocked that it’s not more popular. i think it’s right on par with the naturals series and is one of the best YA mystery/thriller/crime novels. if you’re a fan of criminal minds, mindhunter, hannibal, silence of the lambs, etc.: READ THIS BOOK!

The Final Review

SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP

For the most part at least. This was an epic conclusion to an amazing trilogy.

Emma and Travis are together and I honestly loved it. I hoped they would stay friends, but you know, romance always wins in books. Maybe not in real life, but definitely in fiction.

The plot is so good!! I know some people complained about how much Travis is in the book, but I could not care less. He deserves love too, and we still had Emma's POV.

Neither one of our main two characters is out of character, but I can't say that about others.

Kristin is a gem and I will miss her. I get she's not a great person, but I loved her in Some Shall Break.

But Simon.

Oh Simon.

I don't think he was written properly at all in the last part of the book. He just seemed so off and it didn't feel right. I get that what happened to him is enough to push anyone off the edge, but the characterization missed for me.

Also, that epilogue was really confusing. I need an explanation or reasoning or anything.

Overall, I'm sad that it's over, even with a few small complaints.

4 stars!

I had a lot of fun reading this book though I loved learning more about Travis as a character in this book he definitely plays a bigger part in this book since it’s mostly his pov through out the book. I didn’t mind it because he’s one of my favs but I did miss Emma’s pov throughout the book. I loved seeing their relationship unfold it was so cute I love them so much I was so happy they got a happy ending. I thought we were going to get more povs besides Travis which is something that kind of bothered me a little but didn’t take away from the plot. I wished we had gotten more of Simon povs and Kristen’s cause they feel like ghosts in a way and that’s probably the point but I still would have liked to read about them more. I thought the ending was good I loved the epilogue between Emma and Travis was amazing and that ending?? It makes me so sad that this the end of the none shall sleep series because with that ending there’s still
So many questions like how did Simon survive? Is he going to come back and try to attack Emma and Travis again? What is Emma’s and Travis’s future like? And so much more. Overall I loved this book and this series as a whole I would definitely recommend it to people I am so happy we got a third book and I’m so sad to be saying bye to these characters (though I will definitely be rereading the series) Ellie Marney has done it again with this book 🖤

I do hate to say that this was slightly disappointing because I still really enjoyed the book and Marney’s writing. Perhaps it was a case of me being too hyped to read this book because I’m left feeling a bit let down.

I think that mostly has to do with the lack of Emma in this book. She’s still a main character and she’s still there, don’t worry! However, one thing I adored about these books was seeing her development and her fortitude and her voice. She was one of my favourite female characters and I felt like her character had paled a little in comparison. I just wanted more of her honestly and I wanted more of her perspective. The end of the last book was monumental for her and I would’ve much preferred to see her wrestling with her actions and also as she takes these next steps with Travis.

The rest of the book was good, not great. I enjoyed the cat and mouse game, and enjoyed the Travis development. Ultimately, it fell a little flat which is unfortunate but I would still recommend it as I love the series.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

oh my gosh where do i even begin my mind has just been on a constant loop of emmatravis emmatravis emmatravis their development both as individuals and partners has been my favorite part of this trilogy from the very beginning. seeing them grow together and ultimately end the way they do was SO satisfying and it felt so perfect for their characters. i actually enjoyed travis taking on a more central role in this book and i don’t think his nor emma’s character was diminished by his struggles/being in the spotlight. his internal conflict with his future and the FBI and his grief felt so real and human to me. in the previous books i had thought his personal connection to simon was underutilized, so i liked that this book explored that more. him being the one to kill kristin felt especially poignant to me, though i do wish that emma had more scenes with her—like others have said, it would’ve made sense for her to be the one leading that final conversation instead of travis. i’ve always liked the little tidbits of their relationship. emma staying after identifying her body brought tears to my eyes, it was so special to me.

this was also the most gruesome book by FAR. oh my god. what simon did to martino and kirby and becher i felt sick to my stomach. i don’t think my hand moved from my mouth for at least two chapters after "it’s because everyone is dead." the FILM inside of becher—i couldn’t take it but i couldn’t tear my eyes away from the screen. ellie marney you did such a spectacular job capturing the complete and utter horror of it. and the TAPES!!!!!!!!! seeing the tea party murders!!!!! simon and kristin’s sick relationship!!! it was so nauseating and i applaud you for that truly. oh my god.

the only major complaint i have is that the ending felt a bit rushed/flat—the attack on travis’s family and the final showdown between them. i’d like to imagine it’s indictative of simon’s headspace, as wild and erratic as he must’ve been. i loved that the final showdown was between him and emma but i definitely have mixed feelings about her and travis shooting him together. on one hand i feel it gave them both closure, but i also feel like travis got that with killing kristin? he got the full circle moment killing the person simon loved most the same way simon killed his dad. to me this had been emma’s kill from the very beginning. and him surviving on one hand i like the openendness of it, it feels so very simon, but at the same time it was also kind of unnecessary to me. after all emma and travis have endured at simon’s hands, let them kill him and be done! simon’s story was done. he had no real purpose in surviving.

all in all, this was a spectacular read. i thoroughly enjoyed it and though i’m sad to say goodbye to emma and travis, i truly believe this was the best possible ending they could’ve gotten! and thank you so much to ellie for this advanced copy <33

It was a good ending to the series, but there just wasn’t anything surprising. I wish all these books had at least one plot twist. I was also getting do frustrated at Emma and Travis for constantly going off alone and the FBI letting them do it. Like how do you think that’s gonna end? Anyways, overall a good series.

fantastic end to the trilogy and HOLY MOLY was that ending spectacular!! i did let this marinate in my head for a while before writing a review, since i initially felt like it only deserved 4 stars, due to it being a bit draggy in some bits. as well as that, the climax at the end felt quite short-lived, and unlike none shall sleep and some shall mourn, there wasn't this end thrill of 100 pages where everything was crazy crazy suspenseful. with that being said however, it did keep me hooked all the way through, and i was definitely surprised by many of the plot points. judging by how fast i got through the book (despite having a physics test in 3 days that i need to study for 👀), i can say with certainty that this was a wild ride and the book fully deserves my ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

if you're contemplating whether to read the none shall sleep trilogy, check it out for sure, especially if you're a fan of the naturals and fbi detective fiction 😊

description

Travis Bell and Emma Lewis have just one mission; find and capture Simon Gutmunsson, notorious serial killer, and his sister Kristen, after they escaped at the end of . Coordinating with the FBI, they plan to set a trap to lure them in. But people are going to die before HE lets go of their freedom.

What a great ending to a great series! Characters? Engaging. Plot? Moving. Twists? Unexpected! Deaths? Brutal. I am so glad the author was able to publish this book, despite all the setbacks she faced. I for one can rest easy finally knowing the final conclusion.

Emma Lewis has gained some perspective on life, and as her emotional walls come down, she realizes that only by working as a perfect team will she and Travis have any chance of beating the Gutmunsson twins at their own terrifying game. I really don’t wanna say too much because hopefully by now I have convinced y’all to give this series a go, and I don’t wanna spoil anything but I am VERY happy that Ellie Marney concluded the series for us despite publishing. I’m not gonna lie I was a tad disorientated at first but around 60 pages in the team was back where they were supposed to be and I was in it. As it’s the last book in the series there are moments that are less action packed to fill in some of the storylines. But the action is edge of your seat, neck strained, teeth grinding type of action. There are truly some twisted scenes and heartbreaking scenes in this book and I wouldn't have it any other way. Not my favorite in the series but definitely a solid book and 5-star series.

STORY
Unlike the other two novels, this one doesn’t have a separate case they need to solve, it focuses only on catching Simon which seems like a great idea but it ends up being lackluster. I expected far more drama and flair because hello? Simon.

*Tom Blyth would be the perfect pick for Simon and you can't convince me otherwise

CHARACTERS
While I don’t mind reading about Travis and having him take a bigger role, I truly disliked how Emma was pushed to the side and felt like a side character. She was such a badass woman who went through so much but used those situations to become even stronger. I felt none of that here. She simply existed and looking from afar, she was this person, but when you dig deeper, when you actually think about all the scenes from the book - it’s like she lost that spark.
I’m not saying that wanting a peaceful life and escaping the FBI is a bad thing - but I know that the OG Emma would take this shot at taking down Simon with much more passion. She’d go all in.

ENDING
I don’t know how I feel about the ending. The final showdown was underwhelming to say the least. It was all rushed and lacked emotion. I expected a far more dramatic „ending for Simon, but this felt like a copy of a million other TV shows and books because truly

While I could say that the showdown was just...not that interesting, that epilogue was just frustrating. It completely undermined everything and I don’t know if the author wanted to leave a bit of space to continue the series if she wanted, or if she wrote this for shock value. Whatever it is, I don’t appreciate it.

I know I only said bad things so far, but I read this book in (almost) one sitting. I read 20% one day, then read everything else the next afternoon. I couldn’t drop it, I was so pulled into this world because the writing was amazing. And I truly wanted to know what would happen to everyone.

I definitely appreciated learning more about Travis and his family. I also enjoyed reading about police work and all the officers that helped the duo find Simon. In the end, I would still recommend this series because the quality is top notch. The things I mentioned above could just be my personal peeves and not matter to someone. Or maybe it was my too high expectations that ruined the vibes for me. Who knows?
