If the four Barr酶y Chronocles were a concerto, this third book would be a slow movement. An andante. A very beautiful andante, I hasten to add, in case you think I'm using the word 'slow' in any negative sense.

But the word 'beautiful' can have negative aspects too. The journey on foot from the coast of Norway to the Swedish border that Ingrid Barr贸y undertakes in this episode appears impossibly difficult and destined to fail. And that's not only the reader's first impression but also that of every person in post-war Norway whom Ingrid meets along the way.

However Ingrid has shown in the first two books that the word 'difficult' is not in her vocabulary. In any case her long walk is fuelled by love, and when Ingrid loves, she does it with every atom of her being.
There is the love for Kaja, the beautiful baby daughter she carries in a sling as she walks. And there is the love for Kaja's father, a Russian prisoner-of-war, whom Ingrid believes escaped to Sweden during the final months of WWII.

With her usual persistence, she finds traces of his route, and meets people who helped him. She learns a lot in the process, about him, about herself, and about the conflicts that remain in Norway between people who resisted the German occupation and those who collaborated. If this episode of the Barr酶y books were really the andante movement of a symphony, it would be one that offers pause for meditation on pretty serious subjects.

As I read, I traced Ingrid's journey on the map, although I wasn't certain of her starting point since her home island of Barr酶y is fictional. But the places she mentions along the way do exist and so it's quite satisfying to follow her progress to G盲ddede in Sweden. She manages to get a lift on a boat across an inland lake at one point which shortens her journey. Sweden doesn't offer what she's looking for so she retraces her steps and, using the last of her money, takes a train south to a former concentration camp that serves as a way-station for various displaced people. Again this is a moment of pause for the reader as Ingrid encounters some hard truths about war and its aftermath. She also finds out that truth itself 'is the first casualty of peace'.

Eventually she is able to take a boat back towards her home on the island of Barr酶y with a baby who is older and heavier than when she started out鈥攂ut especially who is more responsive and rewarding for her mother. Kaja makes this andante lively when it threatens to turn solemn. She also helps to make it believable, enjoyable, and utterly, utterly moving.

Definitely not the favourite one out of the three books from the series, but I understand why the author thought it was necessary. Sometimes you just have to get into that journey out of that damn Ithaca, even if you're supposed to be a penelope. And it's nice to find out you're not one.
Didn't love it but it was a fast and pleasant read anyway. 3,5.

Prachtig weer!

Noorwegen 1946.

Sko艅czy艂 si臋 czas bezruchu i niepokoj膮cej ciszy, zacz膮艂 si臋 czas wyczekiwania, czas poszukiwania, czas nieustaj膮cego ruchu. Ka偶dy z trzech tom贸w trylogii wyspy Barr酶y ma swoj膮 wyj膮tkow膮 atmosfer臋, sw贸j punkt wyj艣cia. 鈥濶iewidzialni鈥 byli opowie艣ci膮 o rodzinie, o przesz艂o艣ci, o blisko艣ci. 鈥濨ia艂e morze鈥 o dojmuj膮cej samotno艣ci, o t臋sknocie za dotykiem, za g艂osem drugiego cz艂owieka. 鈥濷czy z Rigela鈥 natomiast, to wci膮偶 proza melancholijna, nostalgiczna, miejscami tragiczna, miejscami dramatyczna, a miejscami nawet zabawna, chwytaj膮ca ma艂e 偶yciowe momenty, wielkie emocje mi臋dzy s艂owami.

Wyspa Barr酶y to sta艂y punkt na mapie trylogii Jacobsena. Jawi si臋 niczym kotwica, niczym wyrzucony na piasek wrak, jak ten kawa艂 drewna przybity do ziemi, by nigdy nie podda艂 si臋 falom. Dla Ingrid i jej bliskich zaczyna si臋 nowy czas, nowa epoka. Inna opowie艣膰.

鈥濷czy z Rigela鈥 to historia kobiecej niez艂omno艣ci, wojennej traumy, ludzkich nieszcz臋艣膰鈥 Mimo wszystko najmniej dzia艂a na emocje z ca艂ej trylogii, najmniej przenika do wyobra藕ni czytelnika. Stanowi jednak ciekaw膮 klamr臋 fabularn膮 dla ca艂ej opowie艣ci, daje tak potrzebny naszej bohaterce oddech i pozwala zanurzy膰 si臋 w ten skandynawski 艣wiat przesz艂o艣ci raz jeszcze.

Perskai膷iusi galutinai u啪sitvirtinau, kad sala yra atskiras persona啪as, kur寞 i拧 ties懦 ir 寞simyl臈jau pam臈gdama pirm膮sias trilogijos dalis.

鈥濶iewidzialni鈥 to najspokojniejszy tom, z艂o偶ony g艂贸wnie z opis贸w codzienno艣ci mieszka艅c贸w wyspy Barr酶y.

Kobieta rusza 艣ladem Aleksandra i stara si臋 odtworzy膰 jego kolejne kroki, sugeruj膮c si臋 wskaz贸wkami ludzi, kt贸rych spotyka na swojej drodze. Jest to ci臋偶ka i d艂uga przeprawa, wi臋c przez ca艂膮 lektur臋 by艂am pod wra偶eniem si艂y i determinacji bohaterki, kt贸ra nie poddawa艂a si臋 mimo kolejnych przeciwno艣ci losu, tylko wytrwale pod膮偶a艂a tropem ukochanego.

Prawie ca艂a akcja tej ksi膮偶ki dzieje si臋 w podr贸偶y a wyspy Barr酶y, kt贸r膮 znamy z poprzednich cz臋艣ci, jest tu naprawd臋 niewiele. Jak dla mnie ta cz臋艣膰 by艂a najbardziej emocjonalna i sentymentalna. Bardzo kibicowa艂am bohaterce i trzyma艂am kciuki za szcz臋艣liwe zako艅czenie jej poszukiwa艅. Musz臋 przyzna膰, 偶e ta cz臋艣膰 trafi艂a do mnie najbardziej. Przemawia do mnie Ingrid, jej zawzi臋to艣膰 i silna osobowo艣膰.

Ja t臋 cz臋艣膰 b臋d臋 wspomina艂a najlepiej z ca艂ej serii, a was gor膮co zach臋cam do poznania mieszka艅c贸w wyspy Barr酶y 鉂 Mi zostaje teraz wyczekiwa膰 4 tomu, bo opis mnie baaardzo zaintrygowa艂!

Jest to historia o kobiecie, kt贸ra z dzieckiem u boku szuka drogiego sobie m臋偶czyzny.

This wonderful series of books, this the third of four, has been so inspirational to me, that I am departing next week for several months travelling to several of the less populated Norwegian islands like Barr酶y.
Though Barr酶y is a fictional island, its neighbours and ports on the mainland coast, are not. It is situated a few hundred kilometres south of the Lofoten islands, within the Arctic Circle.
Norway has, by some way, the most islands of any country in the world, with 320,249, 239,057 of which are considered proper islands, with the rest being islets - 65,000 more than the country in second place, its neighbour Sweden. 64 of them are inhabited currently, but historically, more than 1,200 were inhabited at some stage.

The Barr酶y family have survived World War Two, and Ingrid, the protagonist of the books, has had a daughter with Alexander, a Russian sailor shipwrecked off the coast of the island, who then left to return to Russia, a hazardous journey through Norway and Sweden helped by the Resistance. 18 months later, Ingrid and her daughter Kara, leave the only home they have ever known, and follow Alexander鈥檚 footsteps, across wild country.

The Norway of 1946 is a country looking for 鈥榓 new start in life鈥, as Jacobsen puts it. The Occupation in Norway had been different to elsewhere in Europe, as in many places it had been, controversially, with cooperation. People were mentally scarred, and are represented by Ingrid, and her innocence, the security of her life on the island. She needs to follow Alexander, understand his reasons, spend time where he spent his nights, and ultimately, to try and find out whether or not he is alive.
There is such contrast between the peaceful life of a tiny remote island and the war, and again between the wilderness of mountains and lakes through which Alexander travelled, and the war, that it is difficult to comprehend. Jacobsen sheds some light.
Certain passages stand out, not least Ingrid鈥檚 visit to the 鈥楽onderlager Mysen鈥 concentration camp, where Alexander was held before his return to Russia. In the war, its occupants were Jews and other minorities, held in the most dreadful conditions; the Russians held in it in 1946 were treated much better.

Jacobsen鈥檚 great skill is that he is a master of the understatement, and a gentle pace of writing that is so appropriate when writing about the island. That style, suits Ingrid鈥檚 journey away into the mountains less, but it is still compelling. I would suggest that the first two books of the series are better, but only because I enjoyed reading about the sailed life so much.
I have the fourth book left to read, , and will read it on such an island as Barr酶y, in a few weeks time.

This was the third part of the Ingrid Barr酶y trilogy. I've been reading it as it's been translated over a four year period. It appeared on the shelves of my local book shop one day, demanding to be purchased.

My memory was put to the test by reference to previous incidents I'd long forgotten. It was two and half years since I'd read the second book. It didn't really matter. Jacobsen is such a consumate storyteller that he sweeps you along in his narrative anyway. The book comprises a journey through Norway, immediately after the end of the last war. All manner of collaborators, partisans and foreign fighters are weaving webs of deceit that Ingrid seeks to unravel.

As with its predecessors, the writing is top-notch - beautifully imagined descriptions, terse and believable dialogue, perfectly paced. The first book remains my favourite for its realisation of an island microcosm. This one ran it a close second.

It got me thinking about trilogies and series. Unlike a reader of SF, fantasy or crime, I haven't read that many trilogies (to say nothing of the tetralogies, pentalogies and beyond those other readers get to enjoy). Well, there's Golding's splendid To the Ends of the Earth, Peake's fantastical Gormenghast Trilogy, the inestimable Beckett Trilogy, Lord of the Rings (hmm), the ribald Enderby books others on GR have been discussing recently, The Hitchiker's Guide which should have remained a trilogy and, at a stretch, Calvino's Our Ancestors... At that point, I ran out of examples. I've never really been tempted by The Alexandria Quartet. I began but didn't finish Lewis's The Human Age. Any suggestions, fellow readers?

And now I find the Ingrid Barr酶y trilogy isn't a trilogy, after all... A fourth installment, Bare en mor or Just a Mother has been published in Norway and a few other territories. It seems my journey with Ingrid isn't over yet. We Anglophone readers will have to wait patiently for the Dons Bartlett and Shaw to work their Norsk to Engelsk magic.

Quotes:

I really enjoyed this, the third in Roy Jacobsen's "Ingrid Barr酶y" series. We accompany her on her odyssey through Norway in search of the man she loves and the father of her infant daughter. It's a beautiful story about which I won't write more for fear of betraying the plot for anyone else who wants to read it.

Mikro艣wiat wyspy, 偶ycie na w艂asnych warunkach i ten urzekaj膮cy zimny j臋zyk. Ka偶da z tych os贸b ma swoje tajemnice i na ka偶dej w r贸偶ny spos贸b wojna odcisn臋艂a pi臋tno.
Mamy wi臋c do czynienia z powie艣ci膮 drogi i opowie艣ci膮 o kobiecie zdeterminowanej, upartej, mierz膮cej si臋 z w艂asnymi s艂abo艣ciami i przeciwno艣ciami rzucanymi jej przez innych.
Niemniej jednak to nadal bardzo dobra powie艣膰 i jestem przekonana, 偶e dla wielu mo偶e by膰 ulubion膮 cz臋艣ci膮.

Kitap, Ingrid'in Beyaz Deniz 'de tan谋艧t谋臒谋 Aleksander'谋n pe艧ine d眉艧t眉臒眉, ba艧tanba艧a Norve莽 turunu konu al谋yor. Yani bizi bu seriye ba臒layan o ada hik芒yesi bu kitapta yok. Barroy'de ge莽miyor olaylar. Ingrid de benim maalesef sevemedi臒im bir karakter oldu臒u i莽in, seri giderek zay谋flayan bir seri olarak haf谋zamda yerini alm谋艧 oldu.
