My fave suburban thriller author has a new book coming out! Eeeek i will literally read anything she writes! The blurb on this is JUICY! ROLL ON JULY!!!!!! 💚🤍🖤
A superb domestic thriller that starts out a ons a missing person’s case but soon becomes a murder investigation. There are a host of possible suspects and each time you think you know who might have done it new evidence comes out that will change your mind. Detective Jayne Salter uses her instincts and intuition to get at the secrets that all of the main characters are hiding. Even after the murder was solved there were still a lot of secrets not addressed and there is an interesting last sentence from Detective Salter’s boyfriend who is a psychologist that leads me to believe this could be the start of a series.
Did I really binge-read this book in a single day? Yes, I did, and I have no shame about it! Shari Lapena is the queen of binge-worthy murder mystery novels, and this book was no exception. I was immediately hooked and went on an wild ride to uncover the identity of the murderer, which included a cast of potential suspects. As the author expanded the list of suspects, more secrets emerged, making me even more intrigued by the juicy lies and hidden truths. While I found the identity of the suspect relatively easy to guess once a few clues were revealed, the book was still an enjoyable experience overall.
Also this may be random but the title of the book reminded me of the Broadway song from *Chicago* with the lyrics "He had it coming." I found myself singing that line in my head as I read, which made the reading experience even more enjoyable.
Thank you to NetGalley and to PENGUIN GROUP Viking Penguin | Pamela Dorman Books for a copy.
Everyone had motive to make the main character disappear which made it an easy who done it read. However, the ending was extremely lackluster! So much potential to have ended better!
First things first - this book, as a whole, isn't bad, but I could not stand the ending & that's the most important part, right? There was so many interesting story lines that could've led somewhere the just...didn't. I feel like Lapena used the story lines as misdirection, which, fair enough, it's a mystery, but then just dropped them. The ending felt rushed & just like, "I know I've told you all about these people, but here's actually who did it." Like, huh?
When loving mother Bryden Frost fails to pick up her 3 year old daughter Clara from daycare on a day that she was working from home; and is not answering her phone and is no where to be seen in her apartment suspicions quickly arise in Shari Lapena's new summer SHE DIDN'T SEE IT COMING...!
Red herrings a plenty, at some point in the novel you will think everyone is guilty... but Lapena does what she does best and draws the readers in at a breakneck speed with short chapters with cliffhanger endings that leave you racing to the finish line. I could've finished this book in one sitting if it hadn't been a very busy week for me.
Truly, no one writes domestic family thrillers like Shari Lapena- she has such a brilliant way of taken an ordinary middle class family and shaking up their lives for the page...! Her books are like M&Ms; you can't eat just one! And even when the endings are sometimes predictable; {I had my suspicions here...} the ride is still worth it!
I received an ARC from netgalley. I enjoyed reading this book. It was filled with suspense and had me guessing who did it until the very end. It seemed that all the characters had something to hide.
Where’s Bryden? That’s what everyone wants to know when she is discovered missing and her purse, phone and keys are left behind. As the investigation begins, many begin to wonder if her husband Sam is involved? Isn’t it always the husband? Witnesses claim that Bryden and Sam were a perfect couple, in love and trying for another baby. Then the secrets start to come out and maybe they weren’t so perfect after all. As the clock ticks to find Bryden the detectives find that even her family and friends have some secrets of their own and nothing is at it seems.
She Didn’t See It Coming is an engaging domestic thriller with many secrets and twists. Unfortunately, I did have a feeling about where the story was going but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Viking Penguin for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Not my favorite Lapena novel but still twisty and fun.
This one follows the murder investigation of a woman murdered in her apartment, stuffed into a suitcase, and left in the building's storage lockers. The book is full of characters, i.e. suspects. Was it the husband, the boyfriend, the boyfriend's wife, the bff, the sister, or the dude in the building with the shady SA past? This kept me guessing throughout. Would recommend. *ARC review
I received a free eARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Shari Lapena is…not an auto*buy* per se, but an auto-library request for me! Even before I started working at the library, I was trying really hard not to buy books I could inhale in a couple of days (that I most likely wouldn’t read again), because it just seemed like a waste. I’ve been in a HUGE book slump lately - I kept picking up things that were supposed to be so amazing and I kept getting disappointed. I needed…well, something I could inhale in a couple of days! This was a perfect palate cleanser. It’s not doing anything groundbreaking with the domestic thriller genre, and I figured out whodunnit about halfway through, but I appreciated the lack of big swings. There aren’t any glaring plot holes, and it really did get me out of my rut.
The central mystery here is the disappearance of Bryden Frost. When we first meet her, she’s late for daycare pickup (again) and rear-ends a Tesla. The guy *seems* decent enough about it, but something isn’t quite right. Then we cut to six weeks later, when Bryden’s husband Sam gets a call that she’s failed to pick their daughter up from daycare. Given that Bryden was working from home that day, it’s concerning to say the least. In Lapena’s typical style, we hear from pretty much everybody - Sam, Bryden’s true-crime obsessed sister Lizzie, her best friend Paige, Jayne the detective, even Derek Gardner, owner of the rear-ended Tesla and sudden person of interest. I love getting to follow detectives, because I’m a sucker for processy stuff. The case takes some strange turns - Bryden and Sam seemed to be the perfect couple, but was one of them maybe having an affair? Was Tesla dude holding a grudge about the accident? And what exactly is the deal with Tesla dude’s wife? (We hear from her too)
It’s hard to say more without giving too much away, but this moves along at a good clip, and the ending, while somewhat predictable, is satisfying. Tiny spoiler: there’s an attempted rug pull moment near the end, but I kind of saw that one coming as well. I enjoy Lapena’s use of rotating perspective - it’s fun to be in a bunch of different heads. And yes, you do sacrifice character development to a certain extent, but if the plot is entertaining enough, I can kind of forgive that (plus you don’t need a ton of character development to figure out that most of these people are terrible). I also like hearing from the detectives - often in domestic thrillers the detectives are sort of like these defacto antagonists we never hear anything from. I like that Jayne was her own character.
In all, a very solid domestic thriller, and excellent palate cleanser!
We all know that bad things happen to good people. True crime junkies know that people don't just simply vanish; they know that 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 did the unthinkable.
Bryden and Sam have thriving careers, a beautiful young daughter, and they're living in an upscale building while saving for a home. One fateful day, Bryden decides to work from home, but when Sam gets a call from their daughter's day care saying that Bryden never showed up to get her, he's worried. His fear intensifies when he returns to their condo to see her laptop and phone on the table. Her car is parked in its usual place. She couldn't have just vanished, especially not with so much to live for.
But sometimes the documentaries get it wrong, don't they? Did Bryden and Sam really have the perfect marriage? What about the chance encounter Bryden had not long before she vanished? Also, you never know who you're living next to, and don't even get me started on your "close-knit" family and "fiercely loyal" inner circle. Everyone has something to hide; it doesn't matter who you are. Something that would never withstand the scrutiny of a detective's questioning, body language that would tell an investigator to keep digging.
The twists and turns in this book were masterful, and I had no idea what the resolution was going to be. This was more than just a missing persons story; it was an uncomfortable lens into our personal lives, our relationships with our friends, families, and spouses, and a reminder that there is always one person who wants to be close to tragedy...if they can't BE the focus of the investigation, they will make sure they're included somehow. Many thanks to NetGalley and Viking/Pamela Dorman Books for the early copy. This book is expected to publish July 29, 2025.
Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Group Viking, and Pamela Dorman Books for providing this book, with my honest review below.
Shari Lapena is such a great thriller writer because her books follow no mold, they’re all great thrillers but each one is fresh and hard to solve while easy to get into due to her writing. She Didn’t See It Coming is no exception, introducing a detective trying to first find wife and mother Bryden, who mysteriously disappears during the day, and then solve her murder with very few leads since everyone close to her seems to have an alibi - and plenty of secrets.
It’s always thought to be the husband but Bryden and her husband seemed to have a great marriage, she had a great longtime relationship with best friend Paige, and even her sister Lizzie and Bryden were always close. As detective Jayne Salter widens her net and even interviews Derek, owner of a Tesla Bryden rear ended, but comes up short. The mystery was great because in actuality everyone around Bryden is so full of secrets and lies that it’s impossible to get to a thread of truth to shed light on who is the murderer behind the tragedy. But eventually secrets start to dissolve and the story got even more complicated - and fascinating - as the pieces start to fall.
** Spoilers ahead! ** What a fun thriller! Each new book that Shari Lapena writes is better than the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and all of the many twists and red herrings. I smugly thought I had figured it all out from the get-go and loved that I was wrong. I did go down a star because there were several plot lines that I wish had been resolved rather than hanging threads (an epilogue would have been great!) Also, while I understand that the very ending was meant to be shock-worthy, I didn't find it realistic that after being in the news in a high-profile case, and talking with Jayne extensively about her, Michael would not know who Alice was. Nonetheless, I loved it and read through it in one sitting. This will be a definite purchase for the library's collection. Pass along to anyone who enjoys thrillers.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review!
*I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
“She Didn’t See It Coming promises a rapid, plot-twisted thriller, but while it starts with an intriguing premise, it doesn’t fully deliver on its potential. The story follows Bryden and Sam, a seemingly perfect couple living in a high-rise condo—until Bryden mysteriously vanishes. As the search for her unfolds, secrets emerge, and nothing is as it first appeared.
Lapena is known for crafting tightly wound domestic thrillers (like “The Perfect Couple, great book) but this one feels more formulaic than fresh. While the twists keep coming, they sometimes feel forced rather than organic, and the characters lack depth. If you enjoy thrillers packed with secrets and deception, this might still be worth a read—but don’t expect anything groundbreaking.
I’d like to thank edelweiss and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. This was one wild ride that I didn’t want to put down. Bryden has it all, a great job, loving husband, beautiful condo and a little girl. All that changes after a car accident. A few weeks later, her husband receives a call at work; she hasn’t come up pick up their daughter. He comes home to find the apartment empty, her phone, purse and car still there untouched. Where did she go? How could she just disappear? Now it’s up to the police to sort through all the information and multiple suspects. I really enjoyed this one, with a cast of flawed and at times unlikeable characters, you won’t want to put it down.
When a beloved wife and mother disappears, a luxurious condo building transforms into a potential crime scene, and the investigation begins: can the detectives find her before it's too late? Bryden and Sam have it all: thriving careers, a smart apartment in a luxury condominium, supportive friends and a cherished daughter. The perfect life for the perfect couple. Then Sam receives a call at his office. Bryden working from home that day has failed to collect their daughter from daycare. Arriving home with their little girl, he finds his wife’s car in the underground garage. Upstairs in their apartment her laptop is open on the table, her cell phone nearby, her keys in their usual place in the hall. Except Bryden is nowhere to be seen. It’s as if she just walked out.
Bryden and Sam have an idyllic life. Married, well off, and with a 3 year old daughter. Until Bryden disappears. Bryden also has a car accident weeks before the disappearance. We meet Derek who had the accident and his wife Alice. We also meet Brydens family - parents, sister, and her best friend Paige. As the story unfolds we find this perfect couple isn’t so perfect and most of the characters have something to hide. It is so juicy! I found myself suspecting various players throughout. There were some put in just to confuse the pot. Did Sam do it? Or one of the others? You will have to read to find out and it will be so worth it!
Bryden a loving mother, sister and wife disappears leaving her purse and phone behind and no one knows where she has gone. At first glance she seems to have it all but soon secrets come spilling out and nothing seems that perfect anymore.
Wow an amazing 5 star read from Shari Lapena that I couldn’t put down. The story was excellent and I just had no idea until the end what had happened as I doubted every suspect.
The ending was fantastic and just blew me away. Thanks to NetGalley, Shari Lapena and Random House UK, Transworld publishers for an advance copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
In this gripping domestic thriller, She Didn't See It Coming, the disappearance of a devoted wife and mother unravels a web of secrets within a seemingly perfect life. Unreliable neighbors and hidden motives complicate the investigation as tension mounts. A sharp, suspenseful tale that will leave you questioning everyone until the thrilling finale. Shari Lapena reigns as a master of the thriller genre.
Many thanks to Edelweiss and Pamela Dorman Books for providing an eARC of She Didn't See It Coming prior to publication.
A couple with a 3 year old daughter, When her mother fails to pick her up from daycare, the mother is declared missing. A day later she is found dead. Suspicion falls on the husband as usual but they were a loving couple by all accounts. Could it be the pervy neighbor or the handsome guy she crashed into a few weeks before. Her sister seems to enjoy trying to solve the murder, maybe a bit too much.
In true Shari Lapena style, there are many suspects, a few twists and a few cliffhangers. Good page-turner.
She Didn’t See It Coming grabbed me from the start—just like most of Shari Lapena’s books do. From the very beginning, you’re pulled into the mystery of a missing woman—possibly dead. What happened? Who did what? The story is packed with lies, secrets, and plenty of twists that keep you guessing until the very end. If you love fast-paced thrillers with shocking revelations, this one won’t disappoint!
I a big fan of this author and book did not disappoint a very gripping read. Bryden has it all a husband daughter good job s. Sam Bryden husband gets a call at work his wife not picked up their daughter from day care he gets home her bag phone all at home she just disappeared, Detective Jayne salter is on this case. won't say no more lies secrets deceit very gripping you think you worked it out but no
I liked it. I would round it up to a 4 star. There is a lot of involvement happening and it can get a little much. I understand why though. I also, didn't fully figure it out so the element of surprise was there. I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick psychological read. Thanks to the publishers for an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
A twisted psychological thriller that will leave you wondering who the killer is right up to the end! A web of not so trustworthy characters combine to create quite a tapestry of potential perpetrators.

I am a big fan of Lapena's work and her books are usually must reads for me, but this one missed. Very few likeable characters, too many red herrings that are not well developed and an unsatisfying ending. I do wonder, however, if there might be a sequel in the works. I could see it happening.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this amazing thriller by one of my favorite authors. As always Ms. Lapena did not disappoint with this twisty turny story. I was hooked by the first page and it didn’t let go til the last page. What a ride!!
