I directed this play in spring of 2008, so I am very, very familiar with it as this point, and I just love it. It is an under-appreciated member of Pinter's body of work but it's a fantastic little one act with a lot of twists.

The great thing about this play is that it can be read or performed as a very sad dramatic piece as easily as it can be a sort of dark, psychological comedy (which is the route I personally took) and is rich with the kind of diction and style that makes Pinter so prolific. It's definitely worth a read, especially for students of the theatre.

The Lover is a short play, but I think one of his most successful. There is a dark, menacing undertone through the work typical of Pinter. My favorite passage gives a sense for the conflict he鈥檚 able to create in the characters:

SARAH. I鈥檓 trapped.

Pause.

What will my husband say?

Pause.

He expects me. He鈥檚 waiting. I can鈥檛 get out. I鈥檓 trapped. You鈥檝e no right to treat a married woman like this. Have you? Think, think, think of what you鈥檙e doing.

Right after this the character Sarah becomes very forward with Richard. It is dark, conflicted, tragedy and comedy rolled into one.

Really enjoyed this, though I think the twist kind of detracts from the power of the beginning. I'm just interested in exploring that situation as far as it could go, as it's initially set up. I guess that's why I write. I'll always think, "what if?" But this is a great little play.

It's surprising how Pinter's prose style can surprise you, even after such (apparent) familiarity. I was told once that, where a novelist has to write up to 2000 words a day to feel they have accomplished, a poet can be devilled by writing 20. Pinter, in this short play, writes his prose like poetry, with every word, every phrase and - infamously - every paused weighed, considered and filed down. An apparently humdrum story of upper-middle class bedhopping folk, it twists around and around like barleysugar before a stark and bitter finale. Thoroughly enjoyed, and it only took the time of the morning commute to read!

Un matrimonio brit谩nico conversa con toda cotidianidad sobre el amante de la mujer. 驴Va a venir tu amante hoy? S铆, supongo. Ser谩 mejor que llegue m谩s tarde. S铆. 驴Qu茅 van a hacer?

Maybe because I am primed to Succession at the moment I read the superior first part of the play in the voice of matter-of-fact insecure creepy sociopath Tom Wambsgans.

This is Pinter in the form of a Bach fugue.

Would make a great double-feature with Betrayal.

A real strange one. I like how this could just as easily be staged as a sad comedy or an intense psychological drama.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this play by Harold Pinter. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Even though it was written some time ago, but still feels very contemporary as far as the plot goes. I can't really describe the plot without giving away the interesting parts of the story. It's very short (around 50 pages), so go for it! There is no graphic sexual content, though intimate relationships are implied both by the title and the course of the play. It is a little weird, but in a way that is intellectually stimulating, rather than titillating.

Recommended. Highly recommended for film buffs or those into drama.

Identity, play and characterization is taken to another level in this play. The way it divulge into gender role themes and then destroy and disturb the complacent notions, we could see the hands of the master. Pinter's subtle, playful and phenomenological style retains its shades.

Scorching hot "play date" between a husband and wife. How they amuse themselves gives new meaning to "foreplay." Of course, it's a stage play, so on the surface it's tame, but the sub-text--wow!

How do you keep love alive after ten years of marriage?

Some keep repeating the same old routines, ignoring the muted affection that has replaced infatuation, the boredom that has replaced sexual arousal. Others, such as Richard and Sarah in Pinter's haunting play The Lover, play games with each other in order to vary their routine. In one iteration, Sarah is a married woman and Richard is Max, her dignified, lover; in another, Richard is himself and Sarah is his debased whore. However, what becomes clear is that Sarah and Richard are playing different game: while Sarah believes that their different personas can be complimentary, Richard prefers to completely forget that he has other identities at all, seemingly erasing himself from his memory whenever he "changes." What emerges is two people, trying to meet each other with right masks so that they can truly connect, so that they can make their marriage work.

Whether Richard and Sarah's relationship is a healthy one is up for the reader to decide. But it should be noted that the characters are doing what any people would do when they see a relationship that has grown tired and boring: they are trying to salvage it, even if it means meeting each other as different people. "Changing" with each other in harmony so that the relationship can last.

The Lover presents the question of how exactly to stage the play, as a central plot point (which I won鈥檛 mention) requires a director to decide exactly how many different actors to cast. We begin with a husband and a wife discussing things and they casually begin mentioning their various lovers and affairs. This is not exactly a Who鈥檚 Afraid of Virginia Woolf kind of things, but also not not that. There鈥檚 a layer of ire, but it鈥檚 not the full story, but there鈥檚 also no underlying sense of sadness about things. Everything is actually quite matter of fact really. So the tension builds in the story as we know that we will be getting a visit from the title character at some point.

I鈥檝e never spent a lot of time in the realm of infidelity, and I think that鈥檚 probably a good thing. Old novels and movies really make it seem (and so do plenty of real life moments) really common and quotidian, but that鈥檚 not ever been my experience. Any relationship I鈥檝e been in in which infidelity popped up it either happened in very small ways early on, or was the last leg of a short-lived thing. So I鈥檝e never been in that space of 鈥渓iving鈥 with it as it happens in so many stories.

I think it's been decades (!) since I last read this (for a college course?), but what a difference a few decades make. I think I remember not being a fan of this one the first time through as the fact that the husband and wife are also being their lovers was more of a twist, but reading it this time with that element already in mind before the reveal really shows Pinter as an Actor's Playwright, as seeing how the couple speak to each other about their lovers reflects on their marriage is quite intriguing.
