Avril Dahl is frustrated by her failure to apprehend the Frost Killer and get justice for her mother who was one of his victims. The Frost Killer who has been inactive suddenly surfaces. A body is found and Avril knows it is the Frost Killer and it is very likely that she is on his radar. A fast paced thriller which is a riveting page turner. The psyche of the killer is well portrayed as well as Avril's obsession and tenacity to find him.
It was slow and too many superfluous details were thrown in and it dragged in some places. The story itself was interesting and I understood her drive to find the killer. It was crazy how that turned out. I was pretty disappointed at the heroine at the end though. She put other people at risk because she was so obsessed with getting the killer and I just didn't understand her logic. I may try and read this and see if I like it better that way.
Cold Reckoning by Biba Pearce is book 1 in a new series about FBI Special Agent Avril Dahl. Avril made an appearance in the last Dalton Savage series book 4, The Frost Killer, where she didn’t cover herself with glory. Cold Reckoning is published on 12 November, and is set in Sweden. After her time in Colorado, she has come to Sweden to sort through her father’s belongings as he had died 2 years previously. She walks in on chaos. Someone had been through the house and she suspects the Frost Killer has started hunting again and she is in his sights. Her mother was his first victim about 15 years ago and since then he has been on a killing spree. She teams up with Krister Jansson, her neighbour, and also a local policeman. The icy landscape and climate play a big part in the book. Avril is a driven woman, very obsessive about the Frost Killer, having searched for him for years to the exclusion of all else. It’s a great read, creepy in a way due to the killer’s, and the hunter’s, obsession. Looking forward to seeing where Avril goes next.
Reallllly good, if I’m being nit picky then I would have like a little bit more of a plot twist since the killer is basically revealed on the first page but it was still well written and hard to put down!
We first met Avril in The Frost Killer in the Dalton Savage series. I'm glad to see her get her own series now. I really enjoyed her first book and look forward to the rest of the series.
Avril goes home to take care of her father's things after his passing. She finds that his house has been ransacked. Could this be the Frost Killer? Did he file her back to Sweden? She teams up with her childhood friend, now a homicide detective to get to the bottom of things.
Great characters in a great setting with a disturbing plot make for a fantastic read. There is lots of action and some unexpected twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages well after your bed time.
Avril is an FBI agent who wants justice for her own mother’s killing. The Frost Killer has always been who was suspected. A copycat had been taking victims, but the original comes out of hiding and sends a cryptic message to Avril.
So many twists- a great thriller, I want to read more in the series! I’ve visited Stockholm, so the setting of Sweden was fun to read about.
Bibba Pearce has long been on my list of favourite authors and her partnership with L.T.Ryan is explosive, this is a fantastic start to a new series. FBI Special Agent Avril Dahl was frustrated, she wasn't in the FBIs good books after putting all her energy into arresting The Frost Killer only to find that it was a copycat. The Frost Killer was a prolific serial killer who had murdered fifty three women over fifteen years, Avril's mother being his first conquest, Avril had spent her life chasing him. Avril was taking a break, she had returned to her home town in Sweden to pack up and sell her late father's house only to find that it had been ransacked. The next door neighbour was Avril's childhood friend, Kristen Jansson, now a homicide detective. Avril received a message from her boss in the US warning her that The Frost Killer was back in Sweden and had her in his sights..........was he following her, had he been in her father's house? Avril persuaded Kristen that he needed her help, no one knew The Frost Killer like she did, she knew how he thought, she knew his disturbing MO, she had been so close so many times but he had always been one step ahead. This story follows Avril and Kristen's bumpy journey as they pit their wits against the serial killer, the body count escalates and Avril knows that she must do something, but what? Kristen does his best to keep Avril safe but this killer is clever and Avril doesn't make it easy. I highly recommend this book, it is action packed, suspense filled, there are disturbing secrets, there are red herrings and a growing connection between Avril and Kristen. I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.
After a decade of hunting the Serial Killer, they call the Frost Killer FBI Agent Avril Dahl fears she'll never find the man that killed her mother and over 50 other women. She knows everything about him, how he meticulously kills a specific type of woman, lays them out in the snow like an angel, even leaving a token with them.
Avril had come so close a number of times to caching him, but his trail has been eerily silent, with seemingly no signs of him. Her superiors have grown tired of her relentless searching, and after a failed investigation, she's gone home to Sweden to figure out where she belongs and if her career is over.
As she cleans out her childhood home, which has been vacant since her father's passing, she reconnects with a childhood friend Krister, now a Homicide Detective.
Then she receives a message from the killer, and the murders start again, with her the target of his end game. As young women die, Krister and Avril race against time to find the killer before he gets to her.
This book was so interesting as they investigated the killer. Reading the descriptions of places really made me feel the beauty and the coldness of those settings, as well as what we find out about the killer and his motivations.
I really felt for Avril in her sadness and defeat at the beginning of the book until the killer surfaced, where she showed how strong and determined she was. Also, after so many years, being insulated from those around her in her obsession with hunting the killer, she finally opens up to Krister. A wonderful character whom I will be glad to read about in the next book.

A Cold hearted Killer Returns - Avril Dahl was the Special FBI Agent from Sweden, working in La Plata, USA in the previous Dalton Savage book called ‘The Frost Killer, and now this book, Cold Reckoning, is the first of a spin-off featuring Avril's own story, when she returned to her home town in Sweden, working with the FBI there again. Without making a spoiler to that previous book, which I felt was an intense 5 star story, I’ll just say that I enjoyed this new story with all the twists and turns while Avril kept her own secrets of the past from all those she knew and had worked with, including her one and only long time friend from school days, Kristen, whom she hadn’t seen in years. It was a surprise for her to learn he was presently working closely with the same FBI team that she works for now, back in Sweden. By the end of the first chapter I was totally hooked and each chapter onward kept me there. It’s an intriguing, thrilling, multiple murder mystery and a well laid out story with a scary, nail biting ending, so put on your gloves! I’m looking forward to the next one of Avril’s mysteries, and I highly recommend this book. Kudos to authors Biba Pearse and L.T. Ryan! Definitely 5 stars from me.
I received an advance review copy (ARC) & I am leaving this voluntary, honest review.
is the first book in a new series by L.T. Ryan & Biba Pearce, featuring the character of FBI Special Agent Avril Dahl. Fans of Pearce's Dalton Savage series will remember Avril from The Frost Killer, of which this new book is a sequel. In Cold Reckoning we find Avril has returned to her hometown in Sweden to deal with the estate of her father who had passed away two years previous. Almost immediately upon returning to her childhood home, she finds that it has been burglarized & even more shocking revelations are made when she receives a call from Dalton Savage & she discovers that The Frost Killer is also back in Sweden. What follows are unexpected questions about Avril's past, and an intricate game of cat & mouse with the serial killer that has defined her existence and motivated her for the past 15 years. The story is full of suspense and action and I highly recommend it.
Avril is obsessed with catching the serial murderer known as the frost killer. Since coming from Sweden to America to work with the FBI, she has been trying to catch him, and has come close on several occasions. We first met her when she was called in to help sheriff Dalton catch a killer with the same MO as the man she was chasing (in 'The Frost Killer'). Having caught him, it turned out that the real 'frost killer' was still at large and was now targeting Avril. Having got into her boss's bad books, she returns to Sweden on an extended leave of absence to sort out her fathers house and belongings. She finds that the house has been ransacked and it soon becomes clear that while she thought that she was chasing the killer, he was also stalking her and was always one step ahead. Can she stop the killing spree and with the help of her childhood friend Krister (now the local police chief inspector) apprehend the killer? A beautifully written book, a real page turner with plenty of twists, recommended.
While the premise of the story was interesting, the killer was obvious very early into the book. His motivation, his actions to cover things up, and the plot twist were blatantly obvious before they’re actually revealed to the reader. The extensive, yet unnecessary details, of the settings slowed the pace of the novel down. The end was anti-climactic and there wasn’t a genuine danger present in the final scene. While the writing is nice, hiding the truth from readers so it wasn’t so obvious would have made it more interesting. A substantial ending would have felt more satisfying. Other than extreme stubbornness, the main character was flat and her chemistry with her temporary partner was non-existent. It was non-realistic that she would have her mother’s necklace, too, as this was evidence and not a personal affect and would have been kept by the police.

April went into law enforcement because of her mother's murder on her twelfth birthday. She worked her way up in Swedish LEO and when the.serial killer moved to the US she joined the FBI. He is back in Scandinavia so while on leave she returns home to Sweden to settle her father's estate. On her first day she is reacquainted with her childhood friend, Krister who happens to be a lead cop with violent crimes. The Frost Killer is back and is recreating his first four murders taunting April and leading her a merry chase but in the end she gets her man who turns out to be her biological father. Very good story with a lot of twists and turns. Love this author, he is a talented storyteller.
Avril Dahl, an FBI agent, returns to Stockholm to settle her father's estate. Her childhood playmate, Kirster, still lives next door. April is on a leave of absence from the FBI because she made a huge mistake. She had been chasing a serial killer, known as "Killer Frost", for over a decade because he murdered her mother. However, the subject she was after in Colorado turned out to be a copy cat. While she is in Stockholm, a woman is killed just like her mother was when Avril was 12 years old. L.T. Ryan and Biba Pearce take the reader on a journey of Killer Frost repeating his first four murders. Strip is determined to capture Killer Frost. If you like suspense and thrillers, you should like this book. Happy reading! ☺️
“Independent, strong-willed, and bright. Very bright.
Cold Reckoning is crime fiction. It has a plot with enough twists to keep the reader guessing how it will all work out. However, it is also a character-driven novel. The main character, Avril, has a disturbing past. Her present is complex, interesting and dangerous. Sometimes she is disappointed in herself, sometimes insecure but Avril is also brave, determined, and smart. This is the second book I have read that included her. Both are entertaining reads, which can be read as standalone books.
I received this ebook as an ARC. This in no way influenced my review, which is voluntarily given.
Avril Dahl is a FBI Special Agent who has searched for the past 15 years for the Mother's killer, the Frost Killer. He has taken over 53 lives and now, after going after him, she mistakenly has followed a copycat and her boss has put her on leave to get away from the case.
After her fathers death, she returns to her home in Sweden, where she started her life as a police officer. But when she arrives home, the house has been broken into and a message left for her, the Frost Killer is back!
Can Avril catch him this time, or will she risk it all. A great cat/mouse hunt! Loved this one and can't wait for the next in the series!
This is brilliant. This is both the conclusion of a story, The Frost Killer, begun in this author's Dalton Savage series, and the beginning of a new series. The Frost Killer is the most prolific serial killer in history. And for ten years, he has been the singular focus of Avril Dahl's career. Returning to her native Stockholm after years as an FBI agent, she finds herself facing off against her nemesis yet again. This is filled with edge of your seat thrills on the way to catch a killer, or die trying!
Grounded FBI agent Avril Dahl moves back to her home in Sweden to handle the affairs after her father died. She’s been chasing the same killer for over 10 years and it might have cost her job. Back home the same killer is at it again by repeating his very first crimes. Can Avril with the help of the local LEO’s finally crack this case ? You the reader of course will have to find out on your own. With an interesting cast of characters, non stop action; intrigue; mystery and a very well written storyline you will definitely lose trying to get it read !
This isn't your typical "whodunit." Avril Dahl presents as fragile and weary. Her fifteen year obsession to find out who killed her mother has taken a tremendous toll on her mind, her body and her career. Going home after her boss tells her he's fed up seems like the only answer after he puts her on leave. He's given her the option to either get her act together or get out. On one level she knows he's right. She is tired. Will this forced break really help?
FBI Special Agent Avril Dahl is a young woman who leaves the United States to go on a personal mission in Täby, Sweden. Avril has gone above and beyond for 10+ years in pursuit of the Frost Killer who murdered not only her mom but also 50+ other women. Avril became an FBI agent for the sole purpose to get this guy so you're rooting for her in a big way. Super creepy though because the killer now has set his sights on Avril. I hadn't heard the term "Nordic noir" before, but this book absolutely fits in that category.
The story played in the Scandinavian countries is a deep breath (and cold) to the standard plots. The title of this review tries to paint the relationship between the cat (the serial killer), and the mouse (the detective who comes back to her native country) to solve around 55 killings by "the cat". The change of species resolve it all... except a deep secret that I wish it be solved in the second book.
I am an advanced reader and enjoy Biba's books. This one with L.T.Ryan will keep you in suspense through a number of murders in Sweden and USA and finally back to Sweden. Agent Avril Dahl teams up with her childhood neighbour to chase a killer whose victims die of hypothermia. You'll need to be strong willed to put it down.
This was a very great story to bring Avril the peace of mind. After 10 years of working to bring this case to a close But to find out Mikel was her father and whole story behind her mother's death and how he schemes to get back at her Mom. But great book. Can't for the follow up 10 🌟!!!! Thanks Carl Clause
Avril Dahl is an FBI agent who has been chasing the same serial killer for 15 yrs. The same one who took her mother’s life. He started in Sweden and even jumped continents. He had chloroformed 54 women and left them to freeze to death in the snow. She was determined to catch him. Join the chase!
This is a cracking thriller. One in which I was engrossed in from the start to the twist at the end. I loved it. I liked the way intrigue keeps building and building right through to the end. I really hope April has her own series cos after this she deserves one. Highly recommended
This is my first L.T. Ryan book but it won't be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development, quick pace, and intriguing plot. I look forward to the next in the Avril Dahl series and will check out some of Ryan's other series while waiting.
I think this is one of the best books this author has written. The suspense, the interaction with various law enforcement entities, and the challenge of different locations keeps the reader thinking and guessing.
I enjoyed the discovery of new information during the investigation. I could feel Avrel's frustration, but her reactions seemed dangerous for herself & others.
Book story at times just didn't seem realistic. Book was OK but just keep me locked in as do other series, Don't believe LT Ryan had much to do with the writing of "Cold Reckoning" or maybe he was just coasting in producing this book.
