The viral TikTok stalker dark romance, burning with high heat, hilarious banter, and a love story like you’ve never seen before. Can you handle the ride?

I want someone with a soul as black as night. Someone who would burn the world down for me and not lose a single minute of sleep over it.

Trauma nurse Alyssa Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

I want things most people don’t, craving darkness and depravity instead of light and love.

Joshua Hammond has an infamous father—the kind of man that true-crime podcasts love talking about. Josh has spent his life avoiding the limelight, but his online persona is another story. At night, he posts masked thirst traps for his millions of fans to drool over, but one follower has caught his Aly. After reading a comment begging him to break into her house wearing a mask, he decides to take her up on her offer.

Together, Aly and Josh live out their darkest fantasies, unaware that Aly has captured the attention of someone else. Someone with far more sinister intentions than a little light stalking. As Josh turns from predator to protector and the stakes heighten, he must ask himself how far he’s willing to go for the woman he’s obsessed with.

Lights Out is a fast-paced dark romance with a morally gray male lead. Some themes and scenes may be disturbing to readers. Please check the TWs at the beginning of the book.

₊⊹⁀➴“I didn’t want him morally grey. I wanted someone with a soul as black as night. Someone who would burn the world down for me and not lose a single minute of sleep over it."

Okay, first of all, tell me which horny teenager wrote this? Because seriously, what even was this smh 🤦🏻‍♀

The story? Non-existent.
The characters? A mess.
The smut? Beyond cringy.
the chemistry? Hell nah.
The plot? Wait there was a plot?!

And don’t even get me started on the writing because, honestly, I’m so pissed. How did this book even get such high ratings? Did we all read the same thing? Because the math ain't mathing lmaoo 😭✋

ABOUT THE BOOK

This story was an absolute CRINGEFEST from start to finish.

So, we have this girl who simps over a masked TikToker, because, let’s be real, we all have our moments (yes, I’m including myself here). She leaves thirsty comments under his posts, which, again, isn't anything out of ordinary. But then she decides she wants her hookup to wear a mask just like his to fulfill her mask kink And guess what? Her hookup just happens to be friends with the masked TikToker himself. And that is when the masked guy suddenly becomes obsessed with her.

Like what kind of insta-love nonsense is this?

And it only gets worse. Instead of, you know, meeting like normal people, this guy breaks into her house (yes, you read that right), and instead of calling the police like any rational human being, she just lets him stay. And from that moment on, the story completely falls apart.

Our girl here has zero functioning brain cells because she just lets this dude do whatever he wants without a single question. And before you even have time to process what’s happening, boom, she’s in love with him. Like, deeply, madly, unreasonably in love.

Everything happens so fast that I barely had time to comprehend what I was reading. One minute she’s simping online, the next she’s in love with some masked stranger who literally broke into her house. I have so many questions, but most importantlyWHO WROTE THIS AND WHY???

ABOUT THE CHARACTERS

╰ JOSH
"This side was all ego. I wanted Aly on her knees for me, humbled and worshipping. I wanted to watch her crawl to me, naked, before kissing my boots and licking the flat of my knife."

IM DONE 🥴✋

He’s basically every other dark romance MMC, just sprinkled with a bit of humor to make him seem “different. Like, sure, my guy has been through it, but he still cracks jokes andwait for it—ASKS FOR CONSENT!

Wow, what a gentleman!!!!

GIVE HIM A FUCKING MEDAL RN 🏅

To everyone who called this man a green flag, I need you to take a moment, sit down, and reevaluate what a green flag actually is.

Look, I’ve read my fair share of dark romance, and I love a well-written one. But if there’s one thing I cannot stand, it’s when books romanticize the wrong things. And this book? It did that in every way possible.
"I was going to torment the fuck out of this woman, and it was going to be so much fun."

IM JS GONNA LEAVE THIS HERE 🥴

First off, his obsession with the FMC comes out of nowhere. One second, he’s just a masked TikToker. The next? He’s fully convinced she’s his and will do whatever it takes to claim her. And by that, I mean: stalking her, manipulating her, breaking into her house, gaslighting her, you name it, he did it. And we’re supposed to swoon over this?
"This woman was fucking mine, and if I had to mark every inch of her skin, I would. I’d never felt more feral in my life, like I could fight every man who looked at her, put a fucking collar on her neck and lead her around on a leash just to prove that she belonged to me."

E-X-C-U-S-E ME, IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE HOT!! 🤷🏻‍♀

Like, I know this was marketed as a stalker romance, but it was so badly executed that I physically could not look past it. And trust me, I tried. I mean, imagine taking a month to finish a 13-hour audiobook, if that doesn’t speak volumes, I don’t know what does.

And let’s not even start on his personality because, well he didn’t have one. It’s like the author saw Zade and said, "Let me make a Walmart version of him." So many scenes were just blatantly copied inspired by Cat and Mouse Duet, from him being a hacker to chasing her through the woods, to the whole stalking obsession. The only difference was that he wore mask that's it!

Like, Navessa, girl how obvious is too obvious??
"Step one: get Aly to drop her guard.
Step two: fuck her on this couch.
Oh, wait, no. I’d skipped a few steps somewhere."

LOOK HOW QUIRKY OUR MMC IS, BITCH STFU 😭🤌🏻

╰ ALY
"We have the next two weeks off together.
Now that I know that, all I want to do is keep you locked in this house,
Բ.
“Smash. Next question.

pls someone tell me why's this girl trying so hard to be genz like woman act ur age

First off, let’s address the obvious, this woman had zero functioning brain cells, and you cannot convince me otherwise. Like, genuinely, I was experiencing secondhand embarrassment with every questionable decision she made. Girl, what is wrong with you? Where is your self-respect? Where is your common sense? It’s like she saw red flags and said, “Omg, my favorite color!
"Thank goodness we’d picked up the morning-after pill. Between my untrustworthy ovaries and the amount of cum I’d cleaned off my legs when we finished, doubling up on birth control felt necessary if we didn’t want to bring a little Josh into the world."

LMAOO WHAT EVEN 💀

Secondly, she was a trauma nurse a whole medical professional , yet the way she spoke and acted in a professional setting had me crying. Why do authors create adult characters just to make them behave like teenagers? I was expecting a competent, mature woman, and instead, I got someone who made me question how she even graduated nursing school.
"My body recognized him as its main supplier of orgasms. Sex hormones rushed into my veins, my hypothalamus giddily triggering the flood."

IM DEAD 😭

And then we have her personality, or should I say, lack of it. She was the literal embodiment of monotony. Like, where was the character development? Where was the depth? Her entire existence revolved around three things:

1. She lifts.

2. She has a cat.

3. She is obsessed with a masked man.

And did I mention she lifts? Because, apparently, she lifts. Like, since when did going to the gym become an entire personality trait? Wow, girl, you work out, how revolutionary. Please, girl calm the fuck down.

And don’t even get me started on her cringe-worthy dialogue. I swear, half the things she said made me physically recoil. She would just blurt out the most random, awkward lines, and I would sit there like, why did I just read that?
"Oh, God. Too late. 64, muscle-bound, heavily tattooed, shirtless Josh cradling a baby in his arms. I could feel my ovaries back at it again, opening the floodgates and screaming, “GO, GO, GO, as they released every single egg in my body. If I had sex with this man in the near future, we’d have to double up on birth control."

LIKE WTF IS EVEN THIS OMG IM CRYING 🤧✋

Authors, I am begging you, please give us genuinely badass, iconic female characters, not ones who pretend to be. Thank you! 😭🙏🏻

FINAL THOUGHTS
“I love you so much. I love being your prey. I love how easily you overpowered me. I love that your cock is almost too big. I love feeling it get even bigger inside me right before you come.

WHAT KINDA LOVE CONFESSION IS THIS LMAOO 🤧

The writing was so painfully bad that it actually made me miss my Wattpad days, yes, it was that bad. Like, what even was this? The execution was a disaster, and I’m not even exaggerating. Honestly, the first half was somehow tolerable, but the second half? Oh, it completely fell apart. It felt over-exaggerated, unnecessary, and left me wondering, what was even the point of writing that?

And let’s talk about the INSTALOVE.My most hated trope for a reason. Like, where was the longing? The swooning? The eye contact that lingers just a second too long? And, most importantly, WHERE WAS THE STORYLINE? Look, I get that rom coms thrive on this kind of thing, but I have read some incredible dark romances that had their fair share of smut yet still delivered impeccable storytelling and flawless characters. This? This was not that.

I so badly wanted to love this book because I had heard so much hype about it, but wow, it failed miserably. And the only reason I even gave it a star was because of the narrators. They were the only thing that made this even remotely tolerable. If I could rate it lower, trust me, I would.

"Overall, if you enjoy cringy dialogues, insta-love that makes no sense, and characters with the decision-making skills of a brick, then this book might just be your thing! But let’s be real, don’t fall for the hype. This book didn’t deserve even half of it, and I stand by that 100%." 💌

i know this is problematic to say but if someone is gonna stalk and break into my house, let it only be this way. (referring to him buying me security cameras, adopting my cat [my child], and cherishing me endlessly. and not being a psychopath) 🫠

ok i know this ain’t everyone’s cup of tea but reading this book felt like reading Vinnie Hacker’s tiktok comment section and i’m not fucking complaining. this book is the only tiktok-afied book i recognize in existence. if fact, i want all dark romance books written this way. i haven’t had a good laugh in a while and mama is tired. 😪

Josh…oh he's so unreal it's not even funny. thanks to him and his humor this book was laugh out loud funny. many times i was giggling into my closed fist while reading this on my bed at 3am. the way this man is everything i want in a man somebody sedate me. i need a carbon copy 3-D version of this man, first class delivered to my doorstep immediately before i pull the trigger!! Raw raw raw or whatever Lady Gaga said.😖

and i much appreciate our fmc, Aly here wasn’t no meek fragile thing i often read about in this sub genre. she works out ok? and her thought process made me feel normal. i found out a lot about myself reading this. excuse me while i cry myself to sleep and take a shot of bleach. ☺️

not gonna lie, this book could’ve been 50 pages shorter. like if we’re happy and in love fucking end it? respectfully. and give me the epilogue dammit. the epilogue in question was also heavenly to say the least. ANOTHER ONE THANK YOU

A decent entertaining read but could have been better had it just stuck to simple stuff.

Read if you like-
✔️ Butcher and Blackbird
✔️ Haunting Adeline (but this is a much milder version comparatively)
✔️ Masked stalker
✔️ "Touch her and die"
✔️ Some delicious spice (4/5🌶)

I liked the first half of the book more as it was light hearted (yes even for a dark romance). It was more focused on the romance and good spice, which is what I wanted. Then the second half kinda lost me as the whole mafia thing came across as trying too hard.

The two main characters had good banter and sizzling chemistry. Aly is a trauma nurse, I liked reading about her work life. Josh is a complex character, and definitely a hottie. But these two are not my favorites. My favorite character was hands down- Fred the cat. I loved his adorable self and also how the two characters parented him.

The pacing dragged in the second half and imo the plot didn't really need that. It could have easily been a 270-80 pages book 🤷‍♀

Do check out trigger warnings before reading. Overall, a fun spicy read.

 treacherous work

characters = mid. setting = mid. plot = mid. writing = mid. insta love = obviously. concept = mid. development = mid. cover = mid. smut = the only thing present and VERY mid. pacing = piss poor. my braincells = completely gone. my want to read this book = i need to stop doing this to myself.

i am a hater ass bitch, you guys already know this. since this as a rating of 4.31. take this entire review with a BUCKET of salt.

you know when you see someone and think they have worms for brains... this is the book equivalent of that. ALL hype, NO substance.

hello, boobs. i’ve missed you. men should NOT be allowed to open their mouths

the only reason i got through the book was because jacob morgan narrated it. which my fatass just realized that he and zach webber are the same person??? this is a talent i will never acquire.

aly—she was so monotonous & puerile. i am sorry to say but first—she does not speak like a nurse, and second—does not speak like a grown woman. i could not tell you a single thing about her character or her personality besides being obsessed with a masked man and having a damn cat. where are her motivations?? her desires?? (besides sex), insecurities?? i am not age shaming, trust i am not. however, i will NEVER understand when authors write grown ass adults and make them converse like children. this was truly the epitome of wattpad Y/N self insert. except shocker, she's tall this time! her deportment made me shrivel up and die.

josh—he is every single "dark romance" guy ever. i just felt nothing for him and aly. he had even less of a personality and had absolutely no monologue/prose beside thoughts of fucking her. this was superficial and so damn weird. the smut was BAD. don't get me wrong, i don't mind smut, and i would never make fun of it. in this novel, the author took all the "tropes" and tried to replicate popular books. he is SO obsessed with her, of course he is. if you ask me what they know about each other? i have no clue. guess what? neither do they. this man was jejune, sweet? (that is very questionable), horny (of course), and made me feel all the disconcertment. zach's deep ass voice reciting his cringy ass dialogue... i was holding back tears. pack it up king.

while there is nothing incoherently erroneous, this was just a load of blather. arrant tomfoolery if you ask me. it's time to put this mask play shit behind us, as not every author knows how to execute this concept well. i don't think i was the target demographic for this book.

i’m not going to judge you for your mask kink, girly pop. 🙂‍↔ go off, he’s hot.

good chemistry. great banter. even better cat dad.

my biggest problem is that the second half of this book fell off. it felt like the author tried to combine two books and two very different plots into one? it didn’t even feel like the same story once we hit the halfway point?? it was just weird.

first half was so fun, though. i wish it had just stayed on that storyline and focused on the relationship more than everything else that happened.

this probably shouldn’t have been longer than 300 pages and should’ve stuck to being simple but well done.

A super normal guy with zero red flags films a bunch of fetish content for the internet because sex work is work, y’all. One of his biggest fans is a trauma nurse, who has an incredibly stressful job so whatever she needs to do to de-stress is fine by me no judgment. A little harmless flirtation turns into semi-consensual stalking but in like, a really sweet way? Like he buys her food and heats up her car and her cat likes him? I was unprepared for how bizarrely, darkly funny this book was, and I wish I could bottle it to take out and whiff during bad times. It’s not perfect the last 20% dropped the ball for me with all the mafia stuff and word repetition (no book needs word “yowl 22 times) but it’s very good, if you’re into this sort of thing (you are). Who cares if it’s not really convincing that these two have feelings for each other aside from pure, unbridled lust? You’re only young once; bang the mask guy from Scream.

Naurr, because navessa allen put her entire navesussy into this!!❗ why was this actually so good?! from laughing to giggling, to blushing, to sweating in places i didn’t know i could sweat, this book felt like hitting the pentagon and i absolutely loved it! imagine a man with golden retriever vibes who wears a mask and stalks the girl he likes. now lord, please help me! 🙏 because if you squint your eyes as hard as you can and look closely at the beginning of this book, you can see self-respect leaving my body for this man.

anyway, this story follows josh and ally and is told from a dual pov. josh is this masked figure online who hides behind a mask and posts thirst trap videos on tt. ally, a trauma nurse, loves them. when josh finds out that ally is a fan, he decides he should stalk her.

 Josh
now, since the very fucking beginning, all of josh's red flags looked very much green to me. 😎 you can’t expect me to ever hate on a 6-foot sociopath masked stalker who breaks into her house just to refill her fridge, then breaks into her car to give her a ride home after seeing she had a bad shift at work. fuck no. i knew the moment he put a camera in her room to watch her but turned it off when she needed privacy, that if approached me i would fold instantly. he's so babygirl and funny! 😂 did someone inform him he's supposed to be scary?! his character development was written so well i honestly wouldn’t have finished this book if it weren’t for him. he gorilla-sealed held this book together.🥳

 Aly
she was okay i guess . aly is not one of those fmcs i can say i loved, cheered for, or felt related to. i liked her with josh and their banter, but as an individual, i didn’t really like her. i hated the fact that she wanted josh only for sex. she would say the most gen z things, and it made my eyes twitch . i didn't really feel connected to her character or her past as i did with josh, but she was fine i just wish she was written with more depth and complexity like josh.

the second half of this book felt kinda random tho. like all of a sudden there was a mafia storyline that didn’t really connect to the first half. it was still fun to read but it felt like two different books put together. and for a dark romance, this one was pretty chill and actually funny. if you’re into dark romance but don’t want it too intense, with a splash of romcom vibes, you’d probably enjoy this one. it doesn’t go too heavy on the drama or angst.

also highly recommend the audiobook. the narrators killed it—especially jacob morgan.

Read if you like-

overall, i really enjoyed this book. therapy bills are going to be sky-high next week! 🎉🥳🎉

 𝟑 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬

I totally get the hype for the audiobook version of this book. I always prefer reading the book instead of listening so imagine my surprise when I say 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘥. The audiobook was soo fun and probably the only thing that kept me from rating this one star because this book isn't heavy on plot and the second half was unnecessarily dragged. The slow pacing in the second half didn't do it for me.
But I enjoyed the narration way too much to rate this anything below three.

And honestly it took me a while to decide my ratings because if I were to read this book then it would've been a sure dnf. So here's what I think

 Plot (1/5)
 Spice (3/5)
 Audiobook (5/5)

Do with that what you will. If you're looking for a dark rom-com that isn't heavy in terms of plot then this one's for you. Also be sure to go ahead with the audio version because trust me you won't regret it. 💙

This is a solid stalking and masked man story that really hit the mark. It reminded me a lot of Butcher and Blackbird, with similar dark romance themes and that same kind of humor. The balance between the story and the romance was just right—not too much of either, which kept it engaging. I liked both of the main characters and was rooting for them to end up together the whole way through. I listened to the audiobook version, and the narration was spot-on for each character, adding to the overall experience.

this would probably be a good dark romance intro for a lot of people. the topics are dark but the romance is decidedly not. yeah there's mildly kinky sex & knife play but the dude is a total golden retriever.

i appreciated what this did. but i did get bored from about the 50% mark on. mostly because there was more focus on the sex than the relationship. maybe i'm the boring one? lol

I don’t know if it’s just a personal problem or if something’s in the water but all the dark romance books I’ve been reading lately have been SO GOOD in the first half and then just completely fall off and lose all of my interest in the second half, and I’m SICK OF IT! Unfortunately that is exactly what happened with this book.

In the beginning I was immediately sucked in and having a silly fun goofy time giggling and kicking my feet! I love Josh and need more funny psycho stalker MMCs with golden retriever energy in my life. The way he was constantly trying to justify his stalking in his head had me DEAD. I LOVED his inner monologue!! And in the first half I loved his banter and overall dynamic with Ally, I felt like there was so much potential for this to be a really good story. 🥲🥲🥲

The second half of this book is when I really just started to get the ick and things seemed a bit too cringey for me, and I think I noticed them more because of the sheer lack of plot. Unfortunately I ended up extremely bored and felt zero connection to the romance. The chemistry between Ally and Josh fizzled out for me. Don’t get me wrong I still loved Josh he absolutely CARRIED, but Ally gave me nothing. I felt like the author was throwing in random plot points in the second half just to give the reader something else other than smut.

Anyways. Not terrible by any means seeing as I really enjoyed 50% of this book, but it ended up being nothing special in the end.

Like go girl, give us nothing.
I have nothing overtly negative to say about this except the fact that it's completely unmemorable. Nothing stands out from the story. It's supposed to be dark romance, with thriller aspects, but it honestly just comes across as goofy. I can't tell you why I decided to suffer through it, but I really need to get better at dnf-ing unnecessary books.

Idk maybe I have myself to blame by going of booktok's recommendations. But if you ever see me pick up a book where the mmc is a tiktok thirst trap star ever again, please warn me. I do not need that kind of energy in my life.

This is what happens when you give an empty college-ruled notebook to a bored 12 year old who should be paying attention in class.

“I didn’t want him morally grey. I wanted someone with a soul as black as night. Someone who would burn the world down for me and not lose a single minute of sleep over it.

I never thought I would read a dark romance about a masked man making thirst traps on social medias but here we are. Lights Out is unhinged, hilarious and steamy in the best possible ways. The plot is not intense, it's lighthearted and funny. But it was a bit dragged in the second half with the murder and mafia plot. The writing is easy and effortless to read and Navessa knows how to keep her readers engaged in her stories.

Josh Hammond is the reason I finished this book. I thought him being a masked man would be a turn off but he actually made it seem hot honestly. He has a troubled past and it made his character a more complex and real. His monologues kept me going and I couldn't stop but laugh or smile because he is really funny and witty. His humour has a way of keeping me hooked in the story. I liked Josh's sweet gestures for Aly. He is a morally grey hero but he is a good one.

“My evil plan was working. Step one: get Aly to drop her guard. Step two: fuck her on this couch. Oh, wait, no. I’d skipped a few steps somewhere

Aly is a trauma nurse, unfazed by the world's morbid traits. Her character is fleshed out well in the story, highlighting her past and focusing on her present. She has a kink for masked man and his hot videos and asking him to break into her house and fulfill her masked man fantasies. She is unhinged and nothing much scares her off. I didn't felt connected to her character or her past as I did with Josh but she was fine.

“This man is always coming onto my FYP and never on me, and that is a tragedy.

Josh and Aly are great together as a couple. Their banter was sharp and witty and balanced the dark theme of the narrative. Aly and Josh have chemistry both physical and emotional and their deranged and dark mental state suited each other perfectly. They are obsessed with each other on a very fucked up level but the couple who slays together stays together until the very end.

“I have no regrets about publicly claiming you.

I adore Fred, Aly and Josh’s beloved cat child and liked his charming personality and role as their feline child. I also liked how they parented Fred together. Josh was hell bent on becoming the best cat daddy.

Definitely worth reading and I had to know if the masked thing is hot or not. In final verdict, it is hot because he is Josh Hammond.
