The Last De Loughrey Dynasty

Rate this book
Shipped off to a mysterious boarding school tucked away in the far corners of England for being a stain on her family’s honour, seventeen-year-old Dorothee De Loughrey never imagined that the haunting whispers of death she’d heard since childhood were anything but fragments of her imagination. Everything changes when an incident draws her into her roommate's inner circle—a group of misfits whose wealthy families are too ashamed to acknowledge them as their heirs.
Dorothee never believed she’d find others her age who share her burden.

On Samhain, when the veil between worlds is thinnest, a restless spirit attempts to claim Dorothee’s life. She’s saved by Archer Kingstone, the brooding boy who has made his disdain for her clear from the start. A bitter truth, given the unexplainable longing she feels whenever he’s near. Archer leads her to a hidden sanctuary beneath the school’s library, a place built centuries ago for people like her, those who can see beyond the veil.

Dorothee is stunned to learn of the legacy left by her great-aunt, who died in an accident at the school fifty years ago, alongside her lover.

Now, forced to team up with Archer and the others, Dorothee must solve the riddles tied to the legacy and uncover the source of their curse before history repeats itself.

What Dorothee doesn’t know is that Archer Kingstone
is prophesied to be her ruin.

If a fallen star is wished upon the earth, ruin will follow its every path.

.my thoughts.
When in the acknowledgements author said that we would rip her head off for that ending. She wasn't wrong at all.

This book was actually done so good that I particularly don't know how to describe it. Honestly with me seeing new book recommendations from Instagram [actually terrified rn] I didn't know what to expect. But the cover literally took my breath away along with synopsis, so I thought it didn't hurt to check it out.

It took me a week and a day to finish this since my new semester extra classes are way heavy, and I'm a fast reader(I think so) and I prefer to read books in one sitting. Even though yes this book is actually long... 580 pages. I had to take certain breaks and it would take time to build up the same intensity I had from the starting, but gladly atleast it could build up, so I wasn't really that disappointed it's like the word wasn't even in my head when I was reading this.

The story start from the end hooks me by Emmy's beautiful exceptionally writing style, which makes words seem like they sing a song to me [no bc literally it was interesting] it made the plot more genuine and intriguing.

The plot was well played out till the very end, I kept guessing something that was a bit predicting but the way it was executed made my eyes widen in surprise, so that's a new thing. And I loved it the fact that even till the end now I have to drastically wait for the second book to come out. Yet sometimes the skipping of months from first to ninth, was like really off to me, it's like sometimes it's fast and sometimes slow, like the Aquila hall scene was far away.

The characters were deeply portrayed to me, even though sometimes I fell a little off with them on pacing 'like their moments or past knowledge' even though all are a main part of this book and yes have played so much better. They individually were perfectly written to me, and I liked them all without feeling any disliking towards someone so that's one. The found family concept that I found here (i dunno how) I gradually ate it and left no crumbs.

Now Dorothee [Doe] from the start was really given something I look at, I wasn't really like that relatable to her, but I still found her pov more intriguing with the spirits and the school system. She was really strong minded and stubborn of course, but she was at the same time sweet and lovely. She cared for everyone deeply [more to Archer] as they all did to her.

"I was just a figure in this cruel game the stars played with us. And it seemed that I was their least favourite player on the board."

Archer Kingstone's pov also quite took me by surprises, I didn't know his pov was there because I didn't saw it, but it made it so better to have the story been told in two perspective, Archer loved astrology which no one knew but Doe found out by his actions. He was quite intelligent too.

Archer and Doe are bounded by a curse, and they both are drawn towards each other like magnets. and their forbidden love made this story even better. Their banter and story was something I was amused at, and actually enjoyed it. Like Doe loving Archery and Archer being a horse-rider [both sports are interesting btw]. Even though their longing was perfectly written and they both were self-aware of it and were ready to change their fates. But I think I wanted more yearning than I got, [I'm asking too much] because it felt half to me. Yet I loved it.

Hats off to even Mai and Nathaniel, even their love story was something I giggled and appreciated, and both their dynamics with Doe was also the best. Though now I desperately hope for that ending... Author protect my babies you better [Archer and Doe too] Also I need Naomi and Jesper together at ANY cost! They both are so cute together. I loved Jessie as a whole who was such an interesting character who loved playing chess.

For the ending... author better make it up for it because that ending was really intresting... The tale was perfectly carried out throughout and even the curse and the stories. The defying of stars, was something I loved. And when Archer realised Doe was a star and belonged to the sky but he wanted her for himself🥹🫶 something like that. I enjoyed this book and I would really wait for the second book🫶🎀🤭.

.5/2/25.
rtc maybe tomorrow when I return from my lectures. finished 5/2/25
.quick update on life.
I have to keep pausing because my extra classes have started of my new semester [next year boards] 1hr lectures of each subject being lengthy makes me tired!😭 So I would be less active nowadays and maybe read on weekends❤️🫶

.currently reading.
I've been currently reading this since last week, and I have crossed 100 pages so far, and it's actually good! The forbidden love trope is so gonna undone me.

𖥔 “fate leads the willing and drags the unwilling.

i’d like to begin this review by thanking the author for letting me be a beta reader for this book, it was truly a great read and it had such a different concept from books i’ve read in the past. now onto the review

in ”the last de loughrey dynasty, dorothee de loughrey is sent to a secluded boarding school in england to restore her family's honor. though she believes the eerie whispers of death she's heard since childhood are just her imagination, everything changes when she becomes involved with a group of outcasts, each disowned by their wealthy families. on Samhain, a restless spirit nearly takes her life, but she is rescued by archer kingstone. as dorothee uncovers her great-aunt’s tragic legacy, she and archer must confront a dangerous family curse, unaware that archer’s fate is tied to her downfall.

my thoughts .𖥔 ݁ ˖┆this was such an interesting and unique plot, not only that but it had me hooked from the very beginning. the writing in this book is so lyrical and absorbing, the descriptions were so well written.

.𖥔 ݁ ˖ “family doesn’t end with blood, and my friends proved that to me. they saved me long before the wish i’d made upon a falling star was granted.

i want to take a moment to talk about the found family aspect of this book, it was truly beautiful because you get to see these flawed teenagers come together and become better together. their friendship means so much me and the bond they share is so precious. found family will always hit for me 🤞

.𖥔 ݁ ˖ “because you’re the star in my darkness. when i’m with you, i forget every painful memory that would usually haunt my mind. around you, I feel safe, doe.

enough with the star crossed lovers, my heart can’t take it anymore. archer and doe’s story is full of angst, we go through so many gut wrenching emotions with them, their fears, uncertainties, their pain (key word: pain). it was truly a beautiful tale.

“pretty isn’t the right word to describe you. it belittles how it feels to look at you.

that ending. i’m waiting on the second book (im)patiently

pre-review: i need so much time to ponder on this. who, what, where, when and WHY. I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS I’M CRASHING OUT. rtc !

I had the honor to be a beta reader for this book and i cannot put into words how beyond excited i am for it to finally be out to the world in february!

Y’all are not ready for the story of my favorite found family!

Archer and Doe are on one side so tragic and heartbreaking but on the other side own every single piece of my heart

And ofc i cannot forget to share my love for all the other characters created in that universe, they are all diverse and you don’t have a chance not to love them dearly!🤍

I also have to say, that i am so incredibly proud of my friend Emmy and the journey she made so far.
Her debut book already had my heart, but the universe she created in this masterpiece is just different and is just incredible.

I hope all the people, who read this book, will enjoy it as much as I did and will be obsessed with the story Emmy told here! 🫶🏼

I don’t want to say too much, bc you just have to experience it!🤍

“Ut vivos mortuos honorent".

OH MY LORDS
So, first of all I would like to thank Emmy again for the opportunity to read this wonderful novel as arc.

Her writing is something wonderful, magical and easy to follow, and despite being 500 pages, they were read almost immediately :) glued to the pages from beginning to end frfr.

But let’s move on to the characters (who are all in my pocket by the way).
Doe, OHH SWEET DOE HOW MUCH I LOVE HER. I firmly believe that I am destined to see myself in every redhead I read about, but I swear she'slovely. I think you can see yourself in her a lot especially if you tend to be introverted. She's very sweet but absolutely convinced of her goals and desires, and doesn't back away. She's been through a lot, and her mother should be burned at the stake, sincerely (☺️🫰🏻).

'Sometimes, when my surroundings overwhelmed me, I forgot to speak. It happened often.'

'Would I grieve my own death if I had no life worth living? There was no place for me beyond the veil. If I were to leave, then I would be keen to join the stars.'

'Sometimes, I question who I really am. If I’m silent, I’m too quiet. If I talk, I’m too noisy. I was supposed to leave my trust issues behind me, but when I felt safe in someone’s arms, I was just a naïve little girl.'

Archer, please take me riding horses, make me yours, marry me I don't care about the prophecies. Leaving aside the style of this guy who really makes my legs tremble, but how can I not fall in love with the dark-haired, serious boy that seems to want to keep away the protagonist? c'mon.
I love the way their relationship is built up slowly, and I love how their story specifically is well balanced with the main plot, even leaving room for the main mystery.

'I had to be the mean, unlikeable arsehole. It was necessary for reasons she couldn’t understand. And I didn’t want her to understand. I just wanted to keep her safe. If that meant acting like this, so be it. I’d rather she saw me as a violent villain than an innocent lover who had willingly sold her soul to death. '

“If I were a spirit, my only goal would be to haunt you for not telling me the truth sooner,
“What a pleasure to hear I’m important enough to you to want to haunt me, milady,

Speaking of, I found it so interesting you have no idea, a little bit of anxiety here and there (literally every two seconds, these bitches see stuff bro) that left me confused most of the time, but I love being confused for these things so it’s fine 😌🫸🏻

“I don’t want to die, Archer. He shook his head, his eyes hardening in a way that wasn’t meant to scare me off. “You won’t die, Dorothee. We’ve got this. We’ll find this damn book and all the lost memories of our bloodline. This isn’t our fate. I promise we’ll weave the strings of fate into a destiny of our own choosing, because this is our life.

MAISIE MY LOVE😭being an extremely spiritual person, there was no choice but her as my favorite character. Absolutely fantastic, crazy, heavenly. I love sunshine blondes frfr, and even more if they have a boyfriend who hates everyone but them next to them ;). Her and Nathaniel y'all😭 don’t get me started. Read and then join me in therapy. Mai is really wonderful, a fantastic friend with crazy hobbies and style. Her aura is just *chef kiss*, and with Nathaniel, they got very cool skills.

Speaking of interesting skills, let’s talk about Naomi please and how much I love her. I collect misunderstood mean girls with perfect style like infinity stones. She makes me crack with Jesse (AND EVEN THEM UGH SO CUTE OK😭😭) and how much is in sharp contrast with him. She has a style and attitude that wow. Jesse is a lot different but they still get along (he makes me insane, I swear, the best frfr), and I love smart guys so here we are😆

Found family is my ABSOLUTE favorite trope, nothing beats it for me, so from the beginning I knew that I'd love this story, and after reading the book I confirm the initial hope.
The found family here is wonderful, and you can see how the group is very close. I love how they included Doe despite some complicated factors in the story, but I absolutely invite you to read the book to understand what I’m talking about :)

“Are those your friends? I asked, though the answer was obvious.
“They’re my family, Maisie replied as she sat on the edge of her bed. “We have a connection far deeper than friendship.

“Or maybe I was just a stain on the family name.
Archer sat up straight, his face betraying no emotion, as he said, “I guess, after all, you’re not as special as I thought, Dorothee De Loughrey. You’re just like us.

Come on, secret society, found family and mystery, all set in a boarding school away from everyoneand everything? ANDD IT'S PARANORMAL? Count me in.

It became one of my favorite books, but I had no doubts.🙏🏻 (Emmy ily🩷)

Some books come into your life at exactly the right time, and this was one of them. I had been stuck in the worst reading slump, unable to find a story that truly gripped me—until this book completely consumed me. I devoured it, heart racing, eyes wide, absolutely incapable of putting it down.

Dorothee’s journey was breathtaking. From the moment she steps into Aquila Hall, you can feel the weight she carries, the loneliness she’s so used to, and the slow, beautiful unraveling of her finding where she belongs. And Archer? Don’t even get me started. Mysterious, brooding, tragic—he had me in a chokehold from the second he appeared on the page. Their relationship? Gut-wrenching. Every glance, every quiet moment, every sharp, heartbreaking truth between them—it was everything.

⋆˚𝜗

But what truly made this book unforgettable was the found family. Maisie, Naomi, Jesse, Nathaniel—each of them was so vibrant, so full of life and depth, and their bond with Doe was the heart of this story. Their love for each other, the way they fought for one another, the banter, the tenderness—I wanted to live in their world forever.

And the writing—oh, the writing. Emmy’s prose is pure magic. The atmosphere? Haunting. The mystery? Absolutely gripping. The emotions? A rollercoaster I never wanted to get off of. I found myself pausing just to reread certain lines because they felt like something I needed to hold onto.

⋆౨ৎ˚⟡˖

This book broke me and healed me all at once. It made me feel everything—joy, sorrow, frustration, hope. And most of all, it reminded me why I love reading. I am so grateful that it pulled me out of my slump.

Now, since this is an ARC review, I should be keeping things spoiler-free which is a struggle because I just want to scream about everything that happened. But I’ll be good. Just know that you are not ready for what’s inside these pages.

Thank you, Emmy, for sending me this ARC. I will forever be grateful. 🏹🤍🪽

first i need to thank emmy for letting me read the book before its coming out! i’m so thankful for her updating me all the year about the book and for her to trust me enough to show me the whole work once it was done. thank you!

though i knew so much from this book from all the conversations we’ve had, i was still shocked, frustrated, angry, happy and sad after every chapter!
i enjoyed reading this book a lot. the characters are speaking to me, they all have their own flaws and perfections and i cannot wait to see more of them!
the fmc, dorothee, has such an incredible way of thinking and acting. i always liked her scenes and her pov. the struggling we see her having was a bit painful because all her life, she was alone with those unnatural things she could hear and see and she had no one to believe her but now her going to the boarding school and finding a new circle of friends has warmed my heart! the found family trope is my favorite in the book, are we surprised?

the mmc, archer, has my heart! i want to know more and more and more about him because he is such an interesting and mysterious character, you just can’t get enough of him! his thoughts had me going all crazy, and i wish i could tell everyone why i love him so much but lets the reason be a surprise once the book comes out.

archer and dorothee have catched my heart and i’m happy to finally know about them. they might have broke my heart too by their gut-wrenching fate, but who doesn’t love a bit of angst and pain when it comes to a couple they love?

to sum this all up, thank you emmy for writing this book and for letting all of your beautiful fantasies and ideas into a 580 pages book that i truly hope will find its way into the fantasy popularity because it is well deserving of this place.
the writing is INCREDIBLE, and as much as i loved the writing from your debut novel, this one is not to top!

First of all, I want to thank you to Emmy for letting me read this book before it's released. Second of all, I want to say that she outdid herself with this book.
I've been a fan of Emmy's writing since I read Poetry of Flowers, but TLDD got to me on a whole different level.

I was excited about this as soon as Emmy told me bits of the story and characters. But when I actually read this book and really got to know these characters, I actually fell in love with each and every single one of them. There's something so raw and real about them, and the bond they share just seemed so unbreakable.

Especially, Doe's character spoke to me. It was so beautiful to see her opening up to someone and growing as a person. I wanted to wrap her up in a warm hug.

I don't really want to say much about the bond Doe and Archer share because you have to read it yourself, but the attention that was paid was EVERYTHING AND MORE.

There are also some side characters that stole my heart away in the best way possible!

What I can say is that this story is something I've never read before, and that I wasn't bored for even a second. The secrets, the plots, the characters, the found family, the emotions I felt while reading this—it's all I need from good book and more.

I can't say that I'm surprised that I gave this book 5 stars because I always believed that this story would turn out this incredible from the moment Emmy told me about it, and I knew she wouldn't let us down.

So, Emmy, thank you for letting me read this book this early and telling me so much about this story.
It holds a very special place in my heart.

I had the privilege of reading this book as an ARC, so I’d like to start by thanking Emmy! I'm incredibly grateful to be one of the first people to read this amazing book!

It’s safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was captivating, and I quickly fell in love with the characters. The found family dynamic was so000 well done, and I adored the couples that were paired together (seriously, I need a Nathaniel in my life—I love him sm)

Also, seeing Archer and Doe’s otherworldly connection was absolutely incredible to read about. After that ending, I need a second book! I want to make sure Archer and Doe get the happy ending they deserve😭. Archer’s character was so intriguing, and I really hope to learn more about his home life in future books. I can’t even begin to express how much I adore Doe—watching her overcome her struggles and find her path in life was so inspiring.

As for critiques, I don’t have many major issues with this book. The plot was clear and well thought out, and the main characters were a joy to follow. Their relationships with one another were some of the highlights. The ending does leave off on a semi-cliffhanger, but there are enough clues scattered throughout to let you start piecing things together.

If I had to nitpick, my only small critique would be about the "show, not tell" rule of writing. The book had beautiful writing overall, and for the most part, I really enjoyed the prose. However, there were moments where every emotion and inner thought of the characters was directly stated, which felt a little too direct. This could easily be improved by showing emotions through actions rather than simply telling us, like showing a character’s anger through their behavior instead of saying, "I was angry."

That said, this is a minor thing, and it should not stop you from reading the book. It might just be me nitpicking as a literature lover. 😅

📖 The Last De Loughrey Dynasty @authoremmyadamea

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

💌 My thoughts ~

I’m not usually a fantasy reader, but this book completely hooked me from the start. Emmy Adamea’s writing is hauntingly beautiful, lyrical, immersive, and laced with an eerie atmosphere that sent shivers down my spine. Every sentence felt meticulously crafted, and I was lost in the dark academia-inspired world she created.

The suspense? Absolutely addictive. I kept telling myself "just one more chapter," only to find myself wide awake at 2 a.m., unable to put it down. The mystery behind Dorothee’s visions, the secrets buried within Aquila Hall, and the chilling threads connecting past and present were masterfully woven. I needed to know what was happening, and was on the edge of my seat with every revelation.

And the love story? Breathtaking. Slow-burning, intense, and wrapped in an undercurrent of fate and tragedy. The chemistry between Dorothee and Archer was palpable and their dynamic had me rooting for them despite the darkness looming over their heads. Every stolen glance, every charged moment; it was deliciously agonizing.

But then, the cliffhanger. I AM FURIOUS. Just when I thought I was getting answers, Emmy wrecked me with an ending that left me screaming at my screen. I need the next book yesterday!

If you love hauntingly poetic writing, a romance that lingers in your soul, and a story that grips you from beginning to end, "The Last De Loughrey Dynasty" is an absolute must-read. Even if fantasy isn’t your usual genre, trust me, this one is worth it.

(Please give me the next book asap I'm begging)

4⭐️ Where do I start with this book?! I think it HAS to be the quotes. The amount of beautifully written words formed in the most ethereal quotes in this book was astonishing!! I really liked the aesthetic of this book and it’s different from anything i’ve ever read. It has a slower pace to my usual reads and is very much slow burn! Some parts in my opinion for the story dragged out and then you hit 80% and BOOM everything was unraveling. The found family aspect was so cute and I hope to see more of that grow in a future book/s. THE ENDING. Emmy really wanted me to be left needing more. Overall I had a fun time reading this book but something was missing for me that didn’t make it a five stars but I still really really enjoyed it nonetheless. The concept was so magical and mysterious and I loved how it was described. I feel going into this book completely blind would be the best way to read it. I also feel considering it’s a 500 page book the yearning between the lovers was there but then they kind of share an intimate moment which was brushed over very quickly I thought it was very important to those characters and it felt more vague than I was expecting. They all have such sad backstories and I can’t wait to read more about these characters in the future! The doe and her archer and his fallen star 💫🥹 This book is the EMBODIMENT of the prophecy by taylor swift.

P.S I feel this review isn’t the best and I don’t know why normally I can capture how I feel with a book but maybe it’s because it’s super late when I’m writing this and I need sleep 😭

“The ribbon connecting our hearts was only ever meant to bind our souls together.

From the moment I saw the cover, I knew this book was going to be something special—it’s an absolute 10/10 ⭐️, stunning and captivating in every way. But what’s inside? Even better.

Oh my god. This was pure perfection. Every single page pulled me in deeper, and I couldn’t put it down. The story was beautifully crafted, but what truly made it unforgettable was Emmy’s unique and mesmerizing writing style. It felt almost poetic at times—so immersive, so full of emotion, every word carefully chosen to weave something truly magical.

And that ending?? I’m still not over it. I need the second book immediately because I don’t think my heart can handle waiting! Emmy, you are so incredibly talented, and I’m beyond grateful I had the chance to read this masterpiece before its release.

I adored every moment of this book, and I can't wait for the world to experience it too.

i didn’t know how this book would go since i know emmy more as a romance writer than a dark academia author but she pulled it off brilliantly and i couldn’t be prouder !!! this is your sign to follow your heart, even if it takes you out of your routine !

i personally loved the found family aspect !!! even though they’re connected because of the past, they would be there for each other no matter what ! and i absolutely love doe and archer :,) i’m still crying, sobbing and throwing up because of the end

the seventh family, in the beginning of the book i guessed it right but it just slipped away from my thoughts so i got surprised with the reveal !! it was insane and the other reveal i don’t even wanna talk about it because i’m still processing it !

as emmy mentioned, i’m ready to rip her head off. THE CLIFFHANGER???? EXCUSE ME???? I NEED BOOK TWO RIGHT NOWWW !!!!!

First i have to thank emmy so much for letting me read her book before it even came out. Im so so grateful and proud to got to know the Characters and the Universe you created. If i can say something then that im always a fan of your writing style and how you create such beautiful and even complex characters. I enjoyed this book so so much and im really thankful that you let me read it.

Doe and Archer are so so special. The way the two develop and help each other is so lovely to read. Doe simply grows incredibly beyond herself because she has found her own little family in Aquila Hall.

Emmy really wrote incredible Friendships as well as Relationships that make u feel so Comfortable while reading.

If you like Dark Academia then this Book is definitely something for you. What it makes it really special for me is the little Paranormal twist in there. The Story catches you from the beginning and i swear you would like to read the book in one sitting. 🫶🏻

˚₊ ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Once upon a time, there was a Doe and her Archer.
Doe, with a grace so silent, carried a fate both tragic and cruel,
A heart of grief was her Archer’s fuel .ೃ࿐

I first came across this on the author's instagram and it was the dark academia setting and the star crossed lovers that drew me to read this. So going in I wasn't expecting how prominent the supernatural elements were but I was very impressed with how the plot was built into it.

Tropes:
🏹 Dark academia
💫 Boarding school setting
🏹Mysteries and curses and prophecies
💫Star crossed lovers (literally involves stars lol)
🏹Found family
💫Dual POV

ೃ⁀"Invisible strings bound by fate,
Ensured that love was eternally theirs to create"

The writing style was captivating and it definetely leans more towards the flowy metaphor side which works really well with the eerie feeling of blurring the lines between reality and the paranormal side. We got the story from both dual POVS but Archer's one only showed up later after we found out things alongside Doe. THIS IS HOW I WANTED DUAL POV. It doesn't reveal both sides at once for plot and character development.

Found family alert❣️We got ourselves a friend group. Obviously Doe was the new girl but it was so so sweet how they took her in and she found a place where they're all going through similar pariahship and it gets even more complex with their families all being tied into the mystery. All the characters had distinct intriguing backstories and such different deep connections with each other and I would totally read a book about each of them.

ೃ⁀"She saw us, and she knows this whole fate will fall into place like dominoes
if we pull on this string and give into these feelings.

THE DOE AND ARCHER TENSION WAS EVERYTHING. They're very much star crossed lovers and there's an instant spark and connection drawing them together. (there is a reason why it's not instalove promise) It's kinda enemies to lovers at the beginning because Archer was broody and distant as heck and then it's a forbidden relationship thing. I actually really liked how the stakes were very very high which may say something about me but it was absolutely cruel and heartbreaking. Like you want them to get together already but also the prophecy-
Also he calls her his fallen star 😩

ೃ⁀"Ducunt volentem fata, nolentem trahunt.
Fate leads the willing and drags the unwilling"

The paranormal element doesn't shy away from the horrors and mental impact of experiencing these hauntings. The main plot was them trying to solve the mystery of the prophecy, the secrets of the school and its ties to their ancestors. And there's a deadline because they gotta figure out what happened with their grandparents before history repeats itself at the ball (Yes there's a ball!!)
Plot twist was somewhat obvious but not in the way I was thinking. THAT CLIFFHANGER WAS BRUTAL. I still can't figure out what that epilogue implied and will be here impatiently waiting for book two.

ೃ⁀"A fallen star.
My fallen star"

First of all, I want to thank Emmy for giving me the opportunity the be a ARC reader for this book, I have never been more grateful for something, this truly means everything to me.

Let’s get into my review now :)
In this book, we follow seventeen year old Dorothee De Lougrey, who is shipped of to a boarding school for being a stain on her family’s honor. She believes the whispers of the death she’s been hearing since her childhood were just imaginations, but were they? Everything changes for her when she meets a outcasted friend group at Aquila Hall, all of them being a burden to their families, but finding the love with each other. On Samhain, a spirit is close to taking Dorothee’s life but she is saved by none other than our other main character, Archer Kingstone, as Dorothee finds out her late aunts legacy, she and Archer have to confront a dangerous curse that is tied to their families.

𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
. ݁˖ This book was EVERYTHING that i wanted it to be, a story line that had me hooked from the very beginning to the last page. A mystery that makes you question everything. A found family trope where all the characters would do anything if it meant they would be save. A book that broke my heart so many times. Writing that feels like magic.
I wouldn’t change anything about this book, because to me, this book is perfection.
So yeah 5 stars⋆˙no doubt, what so ever.

I’m not surprised to say that this has become one of my favorite books of all time.

Dorothee and Archer’s story absolutely shattered my heart in to a million pieces and made me cry, their love was something I had never read about and it was so so tragic, but it was all worth it. My star crossed lovers. ݁˖

Archer was the most interesting character to read about, he is so mysterious and i can’t wait to read more about him, Doe was the sweetest character ever, with her big heart who wanted nothing but the best for everyone, I love my doe.

What I maybe loved the most was the build up in this story, not only in plot, but mostly in character. The bound that Doe has with the other characters is so beautiful, I LOVED reading about the adorable moments whenever Doe was with one of the side characters, especially with Jesse, compared to the beginning and the end, you really see a amazing difference between her and the others, and that was so beautiful to read about.

The way Emmy wrote this book was pure magic, I really felt like I was inside of the book with the characters. And that’s immediately a 5 stars for me, because that doesn’t happen often.

I can’t wait for everyone to read this book, because trust me, you’ll love it so much :)

Again, thank you so much Emmy🤍

oh you have got to be kidding me. me when i didn’t think i would cry. i just love to lie, because I CRIED. A LOT. that was so heartbreakingly evil and twisted and simultaneously fitting. i should have KNOWN oh my god. seriously, one of the best indie romance-esque books i’ve read. i got so invested and i just cannot. the ending gutted me. i knew it was going to happen essentially but i still spent the whole entire book being in denial. no spoilers but oh my lordy lord. just shoot me it would hurt less. i need someone to kill me. I NEED TO DIE!now dorothee odette de loughrey ii. my babygirl doe! the most pure girl. nothing bad should ever happen to you. i love you so much. i see so much strength and positivity and i wish i was more like you at seventeen. in almost all of the ways. and of course, archer cole kingstone. definitely took ‘sacrifice the world for her SO SERIOUSLY and i won’t fault you for that. that’s so loyal and honorable in my eyes. willing to do absolutely anything for the people you care about. fr. i love YOU so much too. i love everyone. i love mairead alderidge, naomi minoru, nathaniel mcconnell, and jesper berkshire. the plot twists were so good, the dual point of views ate down, and i loved the found family dark academia of it all. i’m still stunned, no way they’re just seventeen years old THOSE ARE CHILDREN! pleaseeee leave my kids alone UGH. what the hell i need book two now. i cannot wait to see what happens next.

I actually needed to take a breath before writing this review because wow, what did I just read???

I went out of my confort zone with this book and I don’t regret it one bit. This book was so different, so special in its unique way. It took me a couple days to be able to find the right words, to find a way to talk about this universe, about these characters.

I never knew reading a love story about star crossed lovers would be this painful! All the angst, all the pain these characters go through because, even though their love is stronger than everything they’ve ever known, it isn’t meant to last.

I absolutely loved these characters. Archer and Dorothee were so easy to love. All i wanted to do was to be their friend, to help them go through all the hardships thrown their way. Thankfully they have the best support system, their friends.

Their friendship is one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen. This found family is one of my favorites. These young boys and girls found each other when they needed it the most and stayed together since then.

Emmy’s writing is absolutely brilliant! Loved how she was able to capture the essence of this story, how she was able to make me feel what the characters were feeling. She wrote such an interesting book, she created such an interesting universe and she did it so well.

I won’t talk a lot about what happened because I would probably say too much also because I’m still in shock. I need the next book RIGHT NOW!!

Thank you Emmy for trusting me with an ARC of this beautiful story 💗

I haven‘t been able to upload my review yet, but this book was a pleasant surprise! *

With TLDLD being Emmy Adamea‘s 2nd published book and in fact paranormal debut, I was curious to see how she‘d embed the academic twist. Often times paranormal academia novels tend to be a tad cheesy, yet this one wasn’t. It was gripping and anyone who‘s read Emmy‘s previous work, know that she has an incredibly lyrical writing style.

As far as the romance and also found family trope are concerned, I really enjoyed it & in my opinion it‘s rare to see latter well executed. - an even pleasanter surprise that it was the case with this book.

The characters are well written and this sort-of magical world as well!

Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal literature or Urban Fantasy.

This book has become one of my favorite reads of 2025. Dorothee is a character who will stay in my heart forever because I saw so much of myself in her and her emotions. I truly loved her growth, and I can’t wait to see more of it in the second book.
Archer is another character I really liked, even though we still know so little about him. He really brought back longing and yearning, which I love to see.
The found family dynamic among the group is incredible, it gives me such a deep sense of home. They are truly a family, and the comfort and love they share with each other is absolutely heartwarming.
I also loved the paranormal setting with spirits; it was so intriguing. The story is incredibly addicting, I just couldn’t stop reading.
I can’t wait for the second book !! 💜💜

I absolutely loved the character work within this book, it was definitely too long. There was a lot of filler, especially in the middle. There were so many moments where Doe and Archer would just talk about how pure Maisie and Nathaniel's love was. We get it. They're in love.

I wish there had been more of the actual mystery in finding the Book of Shadows and figuring out exactly how to break the curse. A lot of time was spent with the characters simply having conversations, which I did enjoy, but this book definitely could've used more action.

I think this book could’ve had another pass through editing, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless and am looking forward to the sequel!
