Mediocre

This book is a frustrating mix. Scattered moments of insightful stories are buried within a large swathe of what feels like aimless "jepra japer." It's neither great nor terrible, just disappointi
ngly mediocre.

Due to my hiatus from GR last year, I didn¡¯t write a review for Dallergut Dream Department Store (i did write a few reviews in a notebook, but having spent the last few months on the move, it's now mia, i know, very sad, i can hear that lil violin). However, I distinctly remember liking it a lot. Its corporate dreamland setting might not appeal to readers expecting their wholesome & cozy fantasies to be pure escapism, but it worked for me. It was the definition of an easy read. I also happen to enjoy workplace dramas (currently watching & loving misaeng), so I was easily onboard with a fantasy twist on this subgenre.

While much of Dallergut Dream Department Store felt like an introduction this whimsical dreamworld¡ªgiving readers insight into how the store operates, what each sells, etc¡ªin Return to the Dallergut Dream Department Store, Lee takes the opportunity to expand on the dream industry as a whole. Our protagonist, Penny is no longer a newbie, and has to deal with new responsibilities while learning more about dream-making & dreamland's bureaucracy.

Like the first book, the chapters read as self-contained stories focusing on specific dream-related issues: from addressing customer complaints to launching new dreams, coming up with special events, or finding ways to bring back former regulars. These vignettes offer a charming mix of magical whimsy and corporate problem-solving, which may not be everyone¡¯s cup of tea but mostly appealed to me. The author lightly touches on issues that might affect both dreamers and employees, such as the pressure on dream-makers to make successful dreams or the type of dreams that have mainstream appeal.
Lee also does try to offer, shall we say, a more comprehensive inclusion of human emotions, but, don't expect much more besides some characters feeling low or tired or a bit sad...I guess this softer, "safe", approach to mental health and everyday challenges makes sense given that this is ultimately a feel-good, comfort read. That being said, I do think that delving a little deeper in certain areas could have worked in favor of the book, giving it a more satisfying healing vibe. Still, even if Lee's handling of mental health and emotional struggles is simplistic, her intentions are clearly good-hearted.
Although the magical elements sometimes take a backseat to corporate-related discussions (such as brainstorming ways to increase sales or win back customers), the story remains firmly rooted in the realm of fantasy. This series isn¡¯t about character development or deep themes, it's all about those feel-good vibes. The prose is smooth, the storytelling is simple, and the overall atmosphere is sweet and magical.

¡°Live in the present for the happiness you have now.
Look forward to the future for happiness yet to come,
And reflect on the past, for you only recognise happiness after it has passed.¡±

I could spend forever in this world and I¡¯d never get sick of it, most likely because I¡¯m convinced there will be beautiful, creative, thought-provoking surprises around every single corner.

In Return to The Dallergut Dream Department Store we rejoin Penny as she nervously awaits her first annual appraisal as a front desk employee at the dream store. Her goals for the year ahead include tackling some customer complaints and finding out why regular customers have stopped visiting. Penny does this with the help of Dallergut himself, as well as a host of other favourites from book one.

Now, where this series sings is the conceptual elements and the world building. It is being unpacked so slowly, and it feels like Lee has an endless stream of ideas, vignettes and discussion points to keep the series feeling fresh. A sequel like this can so often flop because after book one you know the broad concept and you¡¯ve done the reflection on the basic implications of the magic system, so what¡¯s left? The experience can sometimes get repetitive or stale. Return to Dallergut¡¯s though was neither.

We didn¡¯t waste time rehashing the magic system or the basics of the dream world and the department store. If something was relevant to what was happening, it was covered in just enough detail to jog the memory, without feeling laborious. It¡¯s honestly a testament to how vast this world is that some elements from book one were barely touched on at all, because we were preoccupied uncovering new buildings, talking thrill rides to previously forbidden areas of the city and even exploring noctiluca laundry caves, HELLO!!

I love the format of this kind of book and to this point I haven¡¯t read anything else like it. The story of the store, world and main characters run in the foreground, while we periodically turn to little vignettes within the main story, delving deeper into the dreams of customers to explore a variety of different themes. I know there are other series that follow this ¡®stories within the story¡¯ vibe so I need to pick up more of them and see whether the magic is transferable for me.

A couple of the themes in this sequel really resonated with me and touched on areas I¡¯m super passionate about, which definitely helped my rating bump up from the 4 stars I gave to the first book. I also found with the first one that as much as I enjoyed it when I first read it, my appreciation has grown over time as I¡¯ve mulled over the concept and ideas and related the themes back to my own life. I guess that means I went into Return to Dallergut¡¯s with the advantage that I¡¯ve formed a connection with the world over a period of time.

I¡¯m connecting with the main characters slowly and authentically. Some still feel difficult to distinguish at this point, but the ones that we spend more time with feel whimsical but fully rounded and real. They¡¯re lovable but not in a 1 dimensional ¡®cute and fluffy¡¯ way. Our MC Penny can be sweet but a little annoying, prissy at times and full of sass at others; she feels real, and so do the relationships she¡¯s forming.

Okay this review is long enough now; I¡¯ve been gushing forever. I¡¯m gonna head to bed and hope I can find my way to Dallergut¡¯s Dream Department Store. Sweet dreams everyone x

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an eARC of this book for review.

Iya dong, soalnya aku udah suka world building-nya.

Like so many modern and popular titles, this was like popcorn. Sweet, easy, fluffy... and gone the moment it's over. I absolutely get why 'cozy' is so popular - these tales are stress- and challenge-free, they have no darkness or threat or peril, and they're utterly charming - but I'm really not sure they're for me. There's no depth to this stuff, no themes or layers or complexities, nothing I can get my teeth into. Like so many trends, they all taste the same, and they don't actually assuage your need for something fuller and more filling.

Very pretty, but enough with the rainbow-shining soap bubbles. Certainly for a bit.

This event, which Dalergut considers the biggest event he's ever held, has been his sole focus lately. Set to take place in the fall, it is an ambitious plan he has not yet shared with his employees.

Return to the DallerGut Dream Department Store, subtitled Bring Back the Regulars, is Sandy Joosun Lee's translation of ???? ? ??? 2: ????? ???? by ??? (Lee Mi Ye), and the sequel to DallerGut Dream Department Store.

The first book, in both Korean and then in international translation, played a key-role in the, to me frustrating trend of translated-from-Korean literature being dominated by healing novels - twee titles of the 'the Magical Healing Laundromat-cum-Coffee-cum-Bookshop' ilk (see below for a list) - as called out in an astute article in :

Actually, it has only been 4 years since Korean-style healing novels began to gain popularity. The background story can be summarised as follows: Shin Kyung-Sook¡¯s Please Look After Mom (Changbi), published in 2008, first became popular in the US, and Han Kang¡¯s The Vegetarian (Changbi) won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize, which led to the strong performance of pure Korean literature. Then, the trend changed to healing novels with the book Dallergut Dream Department Store.

Because of this, some show concern that the demand in both domestic and international markets for Korean-style healing novels might not last long. There are also comments that readers are feeling fatigued from the repeated production of similar stories. In fact, Korean-style healing novels follow similar storylines - it is the background space familiar to people that changes, such as a store, laundromat, and convenience store. One CEO of a literary publisher said, ¡°It may seem like a sensation, but the commercial success is only a flash in the pan compared to the performance of pure literary works that won multiple international awards.¡± ¡°Literary quality is gone - in its place is only the commercial purpose of quickly producing what sells well right now,¡± another literary editor explained, ¡°I hope highly sophisticated readers around the world won¡¯t mistake healing novels for all of Korean literature.¡±

Fortunately the Nobel Committee recognised the real-strength of Korean literature in awarding this year's Prize to the brilliant ?? (Han Kang).

My review of the first volume sets the scene for the duology's whimsical world:

The story is set in the eponymous Store, which itself lies in the dream world. Dreamers from the real world come to the store during their dreams to purchase the dreams they wish to have (don't ask how!) which they pay for with deferred payments of potions based on their resulting emotions (see previous bracket). It opens with the main character Penny (who seems to live a conventional life but for some reason entirely in the dream world - you may be getting the idea that this isn't a novel that concerns itself with terribly coherent world-building) going for an interview for a job there, interviewed by the legendary proprietor DalletGut himself. He is reputed to be a direct descendent of the Third Disciple of the Time God who, when offered dominion of the past, present or future, instead chose the realm of sleep.

A for this volume, which opens with Penny and her parents celebrating her first work anniversary at the department store, which means she will now become an official full-time employee and the eponymous Dallergut, in his apartment in the attic of his store, contemplating an ambitious new event:

description
(Given Penny is one year out of university and Dallergut well into his 50s, this picture speaks to the series overly cutesy nature)

This volume attempts a slightly darker side as Penny discovers that her first role in her new official employee status is to visit the Civil Complaints Centre and come across those whose dreams have left them unsatisfied. But if anything the book doubles down on the healing philosophy and self-help vibes:

The man awoke without remembering the entire dream, but the wish he'd made in it remained vivid, and he realised it had come true. A year of dedicated studying had led to good results and had eventually brought him to where he was today. The once-bitter experience had sculpted him into a unique individual. He desired to see what form his future self would take, even if that meant breaking apart and grinding against life. And the only way to do that was to face life head-on. The one mantra he needed at this moment was clear:
'This shall pass, and it will be nothing. I'll make sure of it.'

The memories that appear in dreams that week are as diverse as the attendees of the Pyjama Festival. These memories linger in the recesses of each dreamer's mind, like old photo albums hidden away in a musty bookcase, waiting to be rediscovered.

Whether it's recalling a first encounter with a future best friend or reminiscing about the sunset on the way home after a taxing day, each person holds unique memories. Yet they all share something in common.

As memories transform into nostalgia, the lines between the slightest joys and sorrows begin to blur, creating a unique beauty. 'This memory is undoubtedly mine, but where was it all this time until last night?' people ask themselves.

As the attendees of the Pyjama Festival awake from their dreams, they each take a moment to reflect on the past, something many of them haven't done for?a?long?time.

The definition of book insanity is perhaps reading the sequel to a novel you disliked and expecting different results, so this is a rather unfair review.

1.5 stars rounded to 1 for now.

Healing novels over the last 18 months

Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop - one of the first of its type, a (too) gentle love letter to the art of reading and to bookshops, with a gratuitous inclusion of coffee

The Healing Season of Pottery - some nice cultural colour (which many of the genre disappointingly lack) but very much of a type

Marigold Mind Laundry - the nadir of the genre

Yeonnam-Dong's Smiley Laundromat - one that starts sappy but ends up with a darker edge involving both non-consensual distribution of intimate images and cyberfishing, making for an odd mix

The Rainfall Market - marketed as adult fiction, I suspect to appeal to the audience generated by the other novels, but one for 7-9 year olds moving on from series like The Secret Kingdom

A Thousand Blues - think Klara and the Sun but the original pre-dates that, and a more original departure from the genre, although still life-affirming

3.5 stars rounded up.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

I loved being back with Penny, Weather, Mogtail and the rest of the staff from Dallergut's department store. And just like returning to a familiar dream, this felt like going home with a comfortable and meandering story that just wants to envelope the reader in feelings of hope and compassion. The second book is very introspective, this time examining why customers leave complaints about their dreams and also why they don't return to the store - with Penny being entrusted to come up with solutions for both. There's a heavy emphasis on memories and the passage of time, with the message that while some situations can look bad now it will only be for a short period of time and it's these experiences that shape who we are now. There's some really endearing, touching passages as we see certain customers life stories and what has brought them to this place. I have a special fondness for the Noctilucas and their responsibilities, and we see in this book that their job goes beyond what we initially thought in the first book.

Penny is a wonderful character to explore the dream world with. She's smart and inquisitive but with a sensitive soul and seeing the world through her eyes lends it a sympathetic air. There's no threats, no dangers here and the reader knows they're in safe hands with Penny. In the end she'll make sure everyone is ok. I love her budding romance with Maxim too, and hope there's more books to explore this.

This gets a slightly lower rating from me because, just as a personal preference, I really need a plot to keep my interest and there just isn't one here. It's a series of linking short stories or ideas, and the pace is slow and careful without any action. While this is perfect for this kind of story and I appreciate it for that, I found my attention fading a few times especially at the beginning.

Perfect escapism that holds your hand through some difficult topics with a strong message of love and acceptance.

Light fantasy read, heartwarming and inspiring story.

#irhreviews?

Yeah.. literally don't even know where to begin. This book was so 'wholesome'. I did find myself liking it as much as i wanted to!

First things first, covernya cantik banget nggak kalah sama buku pertamanya. Tapi pas udah ingat & terbiasa ya nge-flow aja ceritanya. Easy to follow lah pokoknya.

Semakin dibaca semakin relate.

Quite page turner, karena setiap chapter ends dengan rasa puas sekaligus penasaran about what will happen in the next chapter. Meskipun plot-nya terkesan flat, but i dont think so. Menurutku buku ini cocok buat bacaan santai.

Endingnya cukup satisfying, aku suka. Ultimatelly, this book was light read, heartwarming, relaxing and worthy of every minute reading. i wasn't at all disappointed. I'll not write too much since i highly recommend this one.

Another trip of adventure with Penny in this whimsical DallerGut Dream Department Store and its dream selling world. Loved how the worldbuilding was more expansive this time and apart the heartwarming tales of the customers that visited the store, it also delved much deeper into the dream industry and how the dream production works. From a visit to the Civil Complaints Centre to a heartfelt journey of one¡¯s hope, healing and self-discovery; too cozy on the backdrop (despite the summer heat), bit sentimental and still loving how those dreams brought me into one¡¯s emotional lifestory, of fears and regrets as well that glimpses of closure and comfort.

More depth on the characterization esp for DallerGut and few of Penny¡¯s colleagues at the store; loved the interactions of Penny and Motail and that backstory about Speedo with one of the lucid dreamer customer. The dynamics were enchanting with more narratives revolved around the dreammakers in between Penny¡¯s stress episodes of dealing with the store¡¯s regular customer cases. Personally loved chapters of Maxim and Nicholas with the red ice-cream truck selling snowflake and the crafty fortune cookies that would make you go reflect on your guilt as well the tale of customer 792 who was on the verge of losing his sight.

Nothing too heavy on the execution overall, still a light slice-of-life fantasy to me and truly favoured its simple gentle prose and the mystery behind the DallerGut store. The stories resonated emotionally at a point, offering that gaze of motivation and life lessons making me go thinking about my own dreams as well. Too cute at the end with that epilogue of Maxim and Penny, wish could read more of them soon; perhaps book 3 later(?) **anticipating

The sequel to The Dallergut Dream Department Store, we have returned with our favourite characters in this fun fantasy setting - and I for one am so glad to be back in this world.
What I love the most about these two books is the workplace environment which I find to be so humorous. In a couple of chapters in this instalment we go to the customer complaints centre which was particularly relatable. I think what is especially important is Penny's development arc over the two books, I've grown to really love her along with all the other characters: the floor managers, dreammakers and the Noctilucas!
It is a heavy hitting and emotional read yet so heart-warming at the same time. I cried multiple times yet had the best time reading this book.
The first book was a solid 5 star for me and this sequel didn't quite live up to book one but I'm still rating it 4.5 overall. This is just my perfect translated fiction in a fantasy world, I have so much love for this duology. Without spoiling the ending there is also a very sweet budding romance and I would just adore a novella to focus on their relationship.
4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 for Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ)

3.4/5

The sequel of the whimsical tale of the dream department store is back and I decided to hop right back on the story.

Like the first one, it's short and warm but I was a little disappointed.

I like the fact that it branches out to places other than the department store and we get to learn more about the people who make dreams and their pasts. But some of the parts are too short and I wish the author told more about them! Some parts are a little boring and I wish it was shorter.

Reading this book feels like back scratching but couldn't find the itchy spot.

I gave it a lower rating than the first book because I went it with expectations it would be much better but it didn't.

It's still a decent and relaxing book to read though.

¡±Well, maybe there is another world hidden in our memories.¡±

¡°Yes, maybe there really is.¡±

Return to the Dallergut Dream Department Store is back¡ª and pleasantly better than book one. The whimsy is amped up, the coziness is irresistible, and the magical realism makes you wish this subconscious dream-world could one day be truly obtainable.

Penny is back, and she¡¯s moved up in her role at the department store!

After one full year working alongside Dallergut and friends, Penny now has the opportunity to learn about the real ins and outs of working for a successful dream store¡ª the complaints.

After her first salary negotiation, she receives her sparkling, new pass to the Company District where she navigates the Civil Complaint Centre¡ª a space where dreamers go to complain about discrepancies with their dreams.

Penny learns that not all is perfect at the Dallergut Dream Department Store.

So, with book number two¡ª we delve into the world of rebuilding connections with unhappy customers, learning why they¡¯ve strayed from dreams and the store, and working to regain their trust and patronage.

Like The Dallergut Dream Department Store, the second book continues its exploration of dreams by using a dreamer¡¯s personal narrative to move the book forward. I find myself loving this aspect from the duology¡ª it brings about connection between the reader and characters in the book. The stories also provide insight as to why dreamers have mysteriously stopped coming into the store. From a story about a newly blind man, to a lucid dreamer, and tales about just feeling lethargic¡ª the stories are not only touching, but relatable.

And it¡¯s Penny¡¯s job to win them back and to prove her growth.

In Return to the Dallergut Dream Department Store, there¡¯s also more depth into the behind-the-scenes aspect on how dreams are composed. There¡¯s broader insight on dreammakers and their respective genres, as well as how they can further excel in their field to make dreams bigger and better for slumbering patrons. I was looking for a bit more of this as mentioned in my first review¡ª and I must say, Miye Lee delivered on my wants.

While there still isn¡¯t much of a story here, it was a pleasantly charming and cozy read. I felt soft all over while reading this book¡ª and hopeful that I will one day enter some whimsical, subconscious dream-world such as the one Miye Lee writes about. This is one of only a few times where the sequel is better than the original, and I do wish to see the characters from the dream department store once again.

Return to the Dallergut Dream Department Store receives a deserved ¡ï ¡ï ¡ï ¡ï stars from me this time around. I enjoyed its softness, its readability, and its overall comfort. The translation was wonderful and the book is incredibly charming. If you¡¯re looking for a book to snuggle up with and read in bed¡ª this is it.

Life had always been 99.9 per cent ordinary and 0.1 per cent new.

this was definitely the feel-good I needed after some of the previous books I (attempted) to read.

I absolutely LOVED the first book; I cried, I chuckled, and it made me think. this sort of did the same, but not really?

the focus of Return to the Dallergut Dream Department Store was less on the customers and their stories, a lot of which I could relate to in the first book, and more on world-building. which was interesting! but in doing that, it took a step away from what I enjoyed most about this series.

nevertheless, I love Lee Mi-ye's writing (in translation form), so I do hope for another book in this universe.

Live in the present for the happiness you have now.
Look forward to the future for happiness yet to come,
And reflect on the past, for you only recognise happiness after it has passed.
