He discloses how up to a million Indonesians died as the price for being the World Bank's 'model pupil', and the price paid by the people of Iraq for the West's decade-long embargo on that country. He returns to his homeland, Australia, to look behind the hype that led up to the Millenium Olympics in Sydney and to reflect on Australia's continuing subjugation of its Aboriginal people. And, following the September 11 attacks on America and the bombing of Afghanistan, he describes the new thrust of American power and its goal of 'world order', as well as the propaganda that justifies and drives it.

He had twice won Britain's Journalist of the Year Award, and his documentaries have received academy awards in Britain and the US. Based in London, he is known for his polemical campaigning style: "Secretive power loathes journalists who do their job, who push back screens, peer behind façades, lift rocks. Opprobrium from on high is their badge of honour."
Pilger had received human rights and journalism awards, as well as honorary doctorates. He was also a visiting professor at Cornell University in New York.

5 out of 5 on a nonfiction book doesn't mean you agree with every word, but instead in this case it means I am DAMN impressed with his research. It also means I am going to try to get my hands on more of what he has written. The mentioning of the bombing of Al-Shifa in Sudan for instance, and the ramifications of that - were in and of themselves important pieces of information, let alone all the outlining of Iraq, Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Australia. I am a better informed more curious person because of this work.
As an aside, being that he is Australian, I REALLY appreciate that he criticizes Bush Sr, Bush Jr and Clinton in equal measure. He takes an outside look at what each of their administrations did and says, 'not so great no matter which side you are on' and that is refreshing after years of listening to tons of 'intellectuals' fully supporting either the Dems or Reps according to what view they think the parties have and not questioning what their representatives are actually doing. I need to read more outside perspectives on US politics - and if you have suggestions throw them at me please!

-جان پیلجر... خبرنگاری با یک روح نا آرام است. او در "اربابان جدید جهان" مخاطب را با اطلاعاتی تلخ و پیاپی بمباران می کند. انگار یک تنه می خواهد به جنگ استیلای رسانه ای دنیا برود. و می خواهد قبل از اینکه مخاطبش که هر آن ممکن است دوباره به خواب شیرین و دور از واقعیت حقیقی دنیای اطرافش بلغزد، حداکثرِ گزاره های تلخ را به جانش بنشاند. شاید فقط شاید، اینکه کافئین صفحات کتابش او را بیدار نگهدارد.

كتاب رائع ومؤلم في نفس الوقت.. يكشف الكثير من الحقائق حول السياسات الخارجية للبلد الأعظم - الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية - وحلفائها الغربيين.. والنتيجة الحتمية التي ينتهي إليها الإنسان بعد قراءة الكتاب هي أن تلك الحضارة الغربية العظيمة ما كان لها أن تستمر أو تزدهر منذ نشأتها لو لم تكن قد داست على شعوب العالم الثالث أجمع.. فهي في النهاية حضارة بنيت على جثث الشعوب.. هذا الكتاب غيّر الكثير والكثير من نظرتي للعالم.. شكرا بيلجر!

For anyone looking to become a journalist, this is the shining example of how it's done. Pilger is a monolith of truth, and has been a becon of hope amongst the propagated lies put out by state machinery. If, like me, you're new Pilger, I would start watching the decades worth of documentaries he has put out (nearly all on YouTube), especially The Coming War on China , which was only released a short while ago.
We need more people like Pilger to talk about the truth of why states do what they do, create the people they create, and harm the people they harm. It makes the reader feel ridiculous for thinking otherwise about matters regarding Indigenous Rights, the Iraq War, refugees, and other topics of similar portent nature.
Essential reading.

إن عالم السياسة عالم ملئ بالكذب والإدعاءات، ملئ بالحقائق الخفية التي يجهلها الكثيرون، عالم نخشاه ونخشى حتى محاولة القراءة فيه لأننا نجهل الكثير، ولا نرى أو نسمع في الغالب إلا ما يروجه لنا الإعلام بأنواعه، تلك المؤسسات التي تم استغلالها ففقدت مصداقيتها مع الوقت بسبب التناقضات التي يكتشفها حتى الإنسان العادي، فاليوم مع وغدًا ضد ولكل رأي تبريراته التي يمكن بسهولة أن تقنعك، فما بالك أن تقرأ عن دور تلك المؤسسات في الحروب وفي تغيير وحذف الحقائق واستخدامها للمعايير المزدوجة فيما يدعى "البروباجندا أو الدعايا السوداء"، كل هذا يجعلنا نشكك في مدى مصداقية كل ما يحدث وكل ما يقال ويُكتب، يجب أن تعيد النظر في كل الأحداث القريبة والبعيدة.
هذا الكتاب كتاب صادم، فعندما تقرر أن تقرأ كتاب يتحدث عن سياسة الهيمنة العالمية من الدول الكبرى على غيرها من كاتب غربي فربما تتوقع عدم حياديته أو إخفائه هو الأخر للكثير من الحقائق، ولكن "جون بيجلر" يصدمك بكتاب مفصل مدعم بالوثائق والحقائق والأدلة والتصريحات من قادة شاركوا فيما حدث والكثير من الشهادات لمن عاصروا تلك الفترات التي تحدث عنها، تجعلك أنت نفسك تعيد التفكير في كل ما يحدث في العالم.
في هذا الكتاب عرض الكاتب ثلاث مشاهد رئيسية وضح من خلالها سياسة هؤلاء الحكام الجدد وأهمية الجانب الإقتصادي في تلك السياسة وكيف يديرون الأمور بعد إنتهاء عصر الإستعمار المباشر والإنتقال لنوع جديد من الإستعمار.
المشهد الأول من اندونيسيا تلك الدولة التي تقع في جنوب شرق أسيا والتي وضح كيف تحولت من دولة لها استقلالها في عهد "سوكارنو" إلى دولة خاضعة للهيمنة الدولية في عهد "سوهارتو" ذلك الجنرال الذي وجدوا فيه ضالتهم لتنفيذ مخططاتهم فساندوه ليصل للحكم على حساب "سوكارنو" والمجازر الدموية التي حدثت لتحقيق ذلك، فأصبحت اندونيسيا دولة تابعة للبنك والصندوق الدوليين وتحولت للنموذج المثالي لسياسة العولمة وسلبياتها التي ظهرت واضحة جلية على الشعب من فقر وبطالة.
المشهد الثاني من العراق وحصاره وشهادات من عاصروه من أهالي العراق وأطبائه وتناقضات لجنة العقوبات ومنع الأغذية والأدوية التي تسببت في قتل الألاف، وأكذوبة النفط مقابل الغذاء، وتأكيدات على استخدام الأسلحة النووية بشهادات لا تقبل النقد، وكيف تحكمت تلك القوى في العراق من قبل حتى عهد "الملك فيصل" وكيف أجرت الأمور بعد ذلك لصالحها.
المشهد الثالث من أفغانستان وادعاءات الحرب على الإرهاب والحقائق الخفية حول التوجه لتلك المناطق تحديدًا ومحاولات السيطرة عليه.
ثلاث مشاهد توضح جوانب كثيرة من السياسة المتبعة من هذه الدول الكبرى يمكنك بسهولة تطبيقها على مشاهد كثيرة حدثت ولا زالت تحدث.
في الجزء الأخير من الكتاب ركز الكاتب على دور الإعلام في تلك السياسة العالمية والتي كان يجب أن تصبح في فصل مستقل لأهميتها وأعطى الكثير من الأمثلة على ذلك الدور البغيض التي تقوم به تلك المؤسسات لدعم تلك المخططات.
إن الكتاب ليس صعبًا كما يمكن أن تتوقع لكتاب يتحدث في هذا الموضوع، بل على العكس سهل وواضح مكتوب بطريقة أدبية في الكثير من الأجزاء وخاصة تلك التي يصف فيه ما رأه بنفسه من حقائق في تحقيقاته الصحفية أو في تجهيزه لأفلام وثائقية تتحدث عما حدث أو حتى في شهادات الأهالي، بالإضافة إلى الحوارات التي قام بيها والتي تستشف منها الكثير من الحقائق التي يحاول الجميع اخفائها واقتناعهم بعكسها.
إن حكام العالم الجدد يفرضون وجودهم بكل الطرق الممكنة المباشرة وغير المباشرة، السلمية وغير السلمية، لايهم ما يقع من خسائر بشرية أو انتهاكات لحقوق الإنسان ماداموا يسعون لتحقيق أهدافهم بمباركة الكثير من الدول التي تتقاطع مصالحها معهم أو بصمت البعض الأخر وغض البصر عما يحدث، فمن يظن بأن زمن الإستعمار قد إنتهى فهو مخطئ فلكل عصر طرق جديدة للإستعمار.

John Pilger is without doubt, one of the most insightful journalists of our time. His courage to portray the truth is the subject of both harsh criticism and even hatred. Yet there is also those who understand that his dedication to expose the reality of the stories he covers, is in fact a love affair with justice. Something that very few journalists even know what means any more. And I speak as a one. There is nothing more to be said about this book than that it is full of details and truth and that John Pilger does what he does best. Write in a tone that leaves nothing to speculation. It is a true must-read because it shows exactly what the title says. And you can deny it, reject it and choose to ignore it, but essentially it's true.

This is ESSENTIAL reading for anyone who is a fan of Noam Chomsky, George Monbiot, Naomi Klein or the truth. It deals succinctly with the exposure of corporate greed and it's effects on human populations, debunking of governmental & corporate propaganda and many more things.

ما هي أكبر خدعة في التاريخ ولا يزال الناس يؤمنون بها حتى اليوم؟
المقال يبدو طويلا؛ لكن في نهايته أعدك أن تفهم الخدعة ولا تنبهر بالساحر؛ وتفهم الصدمة التي ربما لن تتخيلها..
كيف يتلاعب العقل الغربي بالعقل العربي خصوصا؟!
مثل الساحر الذي يبهر�� بخدعة؛ يظهرها لك ويُخفي عنك التفسير؛ يأخذ هو مالك وتظل أنت منبهرا به لكنه في الواقع استغل سذاجتك عليك ليس أكثر.. كيف أتوقف عن الانبهار؟! بمجرد أن تكتشف سر حيلته ستفعل .. لذا إليك بعض الحيل التي حان وقت سردها؛ فـ قد (وأقول هنا قد؛ لأنها تفيد الشك) نتعلم منهم ونفهم ما الذي يحدث فينا!
أولهم حيلة تُذكرك بهذا الطفل الصغير بالمدرسة الذي لا يملك شيئا سوي الحيل؛ والتي تجعل أصحابه الذين يملكون السندوتشات والأدوات يعطونه نصيبهم كل يوم كـ شراكة؛ هم الذين يعطونه لا أحد يجبرهم؛ وهم راضون!..
لو نظرت لهذا الطفل وحيله من الخارج ستحكم عليه أنه مخادع! لكن في حقيقة الأمر هو ذكي ويستغل غباء الآخرين! لا بأس ستفهم الآن هذه المقدمة المبهمة..
لو وضعت أمامك لترا من: الحليب� البترول.. عطر شانيل.. كوكاكولا..
وطلبت منك أن تقوم بترتيبهم حسب السعر والأهمية؛ بديهيا.. ستخبرني: بترول.. حليب.. كوكاكولا.. عطر شانيل..
نعم هذا البديهي والمنطقي..
لكن ماذا لو أخبرتك أن العكس صحيح؛ وإليك الصدمة: سعر برميل عطر شانيل 1.6مليون دولار؛ بينما برميل الحليب بـ 500 دولار.. في حين أن برميل الكولا بـ 126 دولار.. وأخيرا برميل البترول بـ50 دولار ..
تخيل أن أقنعك أن برميل عطر قيمته أضعاف مضاعفه من قيمة البترول! فـ أي شخص أنا؟ وأنت الذي اقتنعت أي شخص أنت؟!� الآن عليك ان تربط بين قصة الطفل وهذا القصة؛ لتعرف كيف تلاعب الذكاء الغربي بـ العقل العربي!
تخيل أنني أقنعك أن الرفاهية أهم من أساسات الحياة الأولية: هاتف أيفون أهم من المأكل؛ والأناقة أهم من المشرب والمسكن!
بـ سياسة:" أنت تملك ولكن أنا مَن أضع القوانين.. لديك موارد ومصادر؛ لا تقلق سأضع لك منظمات وشروط كـ منظمة أوبك وغيرها؛ حتي أخذها منك برضاك وأنت مسرور!"
قديما كان يتم دفع مليارات وأحيانا يصل المبلغ إلي تريليونات حتي يتم نقل الجيش والمعدات لاحتلال أرضك وشن حروب علي الشعوب وسرقة وتقويض أراضيهم وممتلكاتهم!
الأمر أصبح أسهل هذه الأيام وتطور لـ الشركات العابرة للقارات؛ لنتخيل شركة كبيرة تعرض عليك أن تقوم بعمل مشروع في دولتك! في بنية اتصالات أو بناء وتشييد أو أي مجال آخر؛ سترحب بالتأكيد لأن هذا سيفتح المجال لفرص عمل كبيرة للشباب وكذلك تقدّم كبير في دولتك! وبالتالي ستعطيهم صلاحيات كبيرة مطلقة..
شركات وراء شركات؛ وبالتالي اقتصادك انتعش؛ وأصبح قائما بحد ذاته كليا علي هذه الشركات! إذن ما الحاجة لانشاء شركات وطنية أو محلية منافسة؟!
تراخي في هذا الجانب؛ واعتماد كلي عليهم!
سؤال هنا: تخيل لو حدث معك مثلما حدث مع شركة هواوي الصينية! إذا وقع اختلاف أو حرب بينك وبين أمريكا كـ مثال؛ أو أزعجها تقدمك الاقتصادي وقدرتك علي منافستها.. فقامت بـ فرض عقوبات عليك ومنعت التعامل الكامل معك؛ وهدّدت هذه الشركات وإلا ستُحرم وتُمنع في أمريكا!
فانسحبت هذه الشركات من دولتك؟! ماذا سيحدث لك�.. لا؛ لا تتخيل لأن اقتصادك وقتها سيكون في الأرض؛ وأنت خسرت الحرب بدون طلقة واحدة!
بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية؛ دخل العالمين الأمريكي والسوفيتي في حرب باردة
استمرت لعشرات السنين وانتهت بتفكيك الأخير " بالمناسبة حركة طالبان كان لها دور كبير في مساعدة أمريكا علي هذا"..
وحينها قامت المخابرات الامريكية بتكريم عميلها الروسي وكان يشغل منصب وزير الخدمة المدنية في موسكو!
سأله الضابط في المخابرات الروسية بصدمة: ولكن أنا كنت مسؤل عن مراقبتك ولم أجد لك علاقة مع المخابرات الأمريكية ولا تواصل ولا رسائل ولا محادثات.. فماذا عملت لها؟!
أجابه: كنت أعين كل خريج في غير مكان تخصصه وفي غير مجاله.. وأشجع علي ترقية الأغبياء إلي أعلي المناصب مع دعايا إعلامية لهم؛ وأحول دون وصول الكفاءات بحجة نقص الشروط.. حتي بقي في الدولة العجائز والأغبياء وأصيب الاتحاد السوفيتي بشلل تام وإفلاس فكري فـ سقط..
الاتحاد السوفيتي بقوته سقط بهذه السياسة البسيطة.. الآن أجبتك علي سؤال لماذا لا تنهض شعوبنا العربية؟! ولماذا لا نتقدم؟! تخلف في التعليم والصحة والزراعة والبناء و و و�. المسألة ليست في الخيانة
المسألة أنه تم توكيل الأمر لغير أهله �.. فقط تبرع بألف دولار لشخص ما في دولتنا كمكافئة علمية له؛ وسيصل إليه عشر دولارات فقط مع الاحتفاء به!!!! ولو دهنتها بـ سم؛ كما في القصة � سيموت الوزير وكل مَن بالمناصب التي تحته وسيبقي هذا الفقير هو الحي الوحيد؛ لأن المال لن يصل إليه!
أخيرا هل تريد معرفة أكبر خدعة في التاريخ؟! نعم؛ هي صدمة نيكسون..
أمريكا حتي يرتفع اقتصادها ويزدهر سعر الدولار بعد أن كان في الأرض؛ قامت بربط الدولار بـ ما يسمي "الغطاء الذهبي".. وطلبت من العالم كله أن يشتري الدولار الخاص بها؛ وفي أي وقت يمكنهم أن يبدلونه بـ ذهب.. فحينها كانت تمتلك ما يعادل حوالي 70% من الذهب في العالم..
الكل أسرع وحتي الدول العربية واشتري وكدّس ملايين الدولارات؛ حتي ارتفع سهمه وكذلك أصبح الدولار هو العملة العالمية.. فلا بأس؛ أمريكا ستدفع ذهبا لأي شخص يريد التبديل!
أتي الوقت وطلب العالم من أمريكا أن تبدل الدولارات ذهبا�. فـ خرج عليهم الرئيس الأمريكي يقول لهم "ضحكنا عليكم وللأسف مفيش".. وهو ما عُرف بـ صدمة نيكسون!
وللأسف من وقتها اصبح العالم يتعامل بالدولارات مجبر أخاك لا بطل؛ واصبح الدولار أبو العملات وصارت امريكا قوة اقتصادية كبري!!

تخيل أن أقنعك أن برميل عطر قيمته أضعاف مضاعفه من قيمة البترول! فـ أي شخص أنا؟ وأنت الذي اقتنعت أي شخص أنت؟!� الآن عليك ان تربط بين قصة الطفل وهذا القصة؛ لتعرف كيف تلاعب الذكاء الغربي بـ العقل العربي!
تخيل أنني أقنعك أن الرفاهية أهم من أساسات الحياة الأولية: هاتف أيفون أهم من المأكل؛ والأناقة أهم من المشرب والمسكن!
بـ سياسة:" أنت تملك ولكن أنا مَن أضع القوانين.. لديك موارد ومصادر؛ لا تقلق سأضع لك منظمات وشروط كـ منظمة أوبك وغيرها؛ حتي أخذها منك برضاك وأنت مسرور!"
قديما كان يتم دفع مليارات وأحيانا يصل المبلغ إلي تريليونات حتي يتم نقل الجيش والمعدات لاحتلال أرضك وشن حروب علي الشعوب وسرقة وتقويض أراضيهم وممتلكاتهم!
الأمر أصبح أسهل هذه الأيام وتطور لـ الشركات العابرة للقارات؛ لنتخيل شركة كبيرة تعرض عليك أن تقوم بعمل مشروع في دولتك! في بنية اتصالات أو بناء وتشييد أو أي مجال آخر؛ سترحب بالتأكيد لأن هذا سيفتح المجال لفرص عمل كبيرة للشباب وكذلك تقدّم كبير في دولتك! وبالتالي ستعطيهم صلاحيات كبيرة مطلقة..
شركات وراء شركات؛ وبالتالي اقتصادك انتعش؛ وأصبح قائما بحد ذاته كليا علي هذه الشركات! إذن ما الحاجة لانشاء شركات وطنية أو محلية منافسة؟!
تراخي في هذا الجانب؛ واعتماد كلي عليهم!
سؤال هنا: تخيل لو حدث معك مثلما حدث مع شركة هواوي الصينية! إذا وقع اختلاف أو حرب بينك وبين أمريكا كـ مثال؛ أو أزعجها تقدمك الاقتصادي وقدرتك علي منافستها.. فقامت بـ فرض عقوبات عليك ومنعت التعامل الكامل معك؛ وهدّدت هذه الشركات وإلا ستُحرم وتُمنع في أمريكا!
فانسحبت هذه الشركات من دولتك؟! ماذا سيحدث لك�.. لا؛ لا تتخيل لأن اقتصادك وقتها سيكون في الأرض؛ وأنت خسرت الحرب بدون طلقة واحدة!
بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية؛ دخل العالمين الأمريكي والسوفيتي في حرب باردة
استمرت لعشرات السنين وانتهت بتفكيك الأخير " بالمناسبة حركة طالبان كان لها دور كبير في مساعدة أمريكا علي هذا"..
وحينها قامت المخابرات الامريكية بتكريم عميلها الروسي وكان يشغل منصب وزير الخدمة المدنية في موسكو!
سأله الضابط في المخابرات الروسية بصدمة: ولكن أنا كنت مسؤل عن مراقبتك ولم أجد لك علاقة مع المخابرات الأمريكية ولا تواصل ولا رسائل ولا محادثات.. فماذا عملت لها؟!
أجابه: كنت أعين كل خريج في غير مكان تخصصه وفي غير مجاله.. وأشجع علي ترقية الأغبياء إلي أعلي المناصب مع دعايا إعلامية لهم؛ وأحول دون وصول الكفاءات بحجة نقص الشروط.. حتي بقي في الدولة العجائز والأغبياء وأصيب الاتحاد السوفيتي بشلل تام وإفلاس فكري فـ سقط..
الاتحاد السوفيتي بقوته سقط بهذه السياسة البسيطة.. الآن أجبتك علي سؤال لماذا لا تنهض شعوبنا العربية؟! ولماذا لا نتقدم؟! تخلف في التعليم والصحة والزراعة والبناء و و و�. المسألة ليست في الخيانة
المسألة أنه تم توكيل الأمر لغير أهله �.. فقط تبرع بألف دولار لشخص ما في دولتنا كمكافئة علمية له؛ وسيصل إليه عشر دولارات فقط مع الاحتفاء به!!!! ولو دهنتها بـ سم؛ كما في القصة � سيموت الوزير وكل مَن بالمناصب التي تحته وسيبقي هذا الفقير هو الحي الوحيد؛ لأن المال لن يصل إليه!
أخيرا هل تريد معرفة أكبر خدعة في التاريخ؟! نعم؛ هي صدمة نيكسون..
أمريكا حتي يرتفع اقتصادها ويزدهر سعر الدولار بعد أن كان في الأرض؛ قامت بربط الدولار بـ ما يسمي "الغطاء الذهبي".. وطلبت من العالم كله أن يشتري الدولار الخاص بها؛ وفي أي وقت يمكنهم أن يبدلونه بـ ذهب.. فحينها كانت تمتلك ما يعادل حوالي 70% من الذهب في العالم..
الكل أسرع وحتي الدول العربية واشتري وكدّس ملايين الدولارات؛ حتي ارتفع سهمه وكذلك أصبح الدولار هو العملة العالمية.. فلا بأس؛ أمريكا ستدفع ذهبا لأي شخص يريد التبديل!
أتي الوقت وطلب العالم من أمريكا أن تبدل الدولارات ذهبا�. فـ خرج عليهم الرئيس الأمريكي يقول لهم "ضحكنا عليكم وللأسف مفيش".. وهو ما عُرف بـ صدمة نيكسون!
وللأسف من وقتها اصبح العالم يتعامل بالدولارات مجبر أخاك لا بطل؛ واصبح الدولار أبو العملات وصارت امريكا قوة اقتصادية كبري!!

When Pilger is in the mood he can be devastating, he has a way of bypassing the BS and just presenting the cold, hard facts which often contradict and make a mockery of western versions of truths or events. Over these four in depth pieces he tackles issues in depth in Indonesia, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans and in his own native Australia. At times he is quite brilliant, exposing western collusion and corruption which is rarely, in some cases never, reported in the mainstream Anglophonic media outlets.
He sums up the state of Indonesia under Sukarno in the mid-60s before the US backed genocide, the country had few debts, Sukarno had thrown out the World Bank, restricted the power of oil companies and publicly told the Americans to “go to hell.� with their loans. That all changed after the slaughter of over a million over 1965-66 and the CIA helped put in the Suharto dictatorship, who along with Anglo-American corporate and political interests carved up the wealth and resources of the nation.
The horrendous embargos carried out by the UK and US in cahoots with the UN on the people of Iraq, described by many as genocide, lead to the death of more than half a million children under the age of five, and of course, when confronted by the facts, dear old Madeleine Albright went on televised record as saying that, “we think the price is worth it.�
Most Americans don’t realise that their sanctions against Iraq killed more than both atomic bombs of Japan combined. According to UNICEF in 1989 Iraqi children had literacy rates was more than 90% they plummeted, putting them down in the bottom 20% in the world after the western sanctions. Also around 93% enjoyed free health care. We also learn of the soaring cancer rates in southern Iraq after the Gulf War of 1991, due to the Allied use of depleted uranium, which even impacted on British civilians who were there.
Pilger also goes into some detail about the intense bombing of civilian villages in Iraq without any military personnel, bases or action in sight � “During 1999, American and British aircraft dropped more than 18000 bombs and hit 450 targets. The cost to the British tax payer is more than £800 million.� At the time this was the longest Anglo-American aerial campaign since WWII.
Not only did the Americans help bring Hussein to power in the first place, but they along with the British had been illegally selling arms to Hussein and Iraq for years but intentionally switching the end user certificates, to cover it up. This included both nations selling weapons to both sides during the Iran � Iraq War too. The US government granted permission for a US corporation to sell chemical weapons to Hussein, which he later used on thousands of Kurdish civilians.
Apparently Pakistani foreign minister, Niaz Naik was told by American officials in mid-July 2001 that the US planned to attack Afghanistan in mid-October 01. And yet we learn that a few years before, “Not only were the Taliban welcomed by Washington, Taliban leaders were flown to Texas, then governed by George W Bush, and entertained in Houston by senior executives of the oil company Unocal. It was always all about securing energy resources in the Middle East.
Pilger also brings up the fact that not only were the US and UK bankrolling and weaponising Osama bin Laden and the Mujahideen in the 80s against Russia, and the Bush family had long-term connections to bin Laden, but they trained future Taliban members in bomb making and other black arts, this continued long after the Russians left Afghanistan and the Anglo-American alliance were happy to back this extremism in spite of knowing exactly how oppressive, cruel and lethal it was, as long as it served its long term interests.
So the sheer depth and breadth of Pilger’s knowledge, reading and research combined with the quality and crispness of his writing make this a real pleasure to read, which pulls out shocking insight after shocking revelation. Over his long and combative career, through his journalism and documentaries Pilger and his many cohorts raised a bold and sustained challenge to the lies, mythologies and hypocrisies which have been perpetrated by so many western political, corporate and media institutions. He’ll be sorely missed.

John Pilger is a fantastic journalist, but this book is a collection of essays so it's not a relaxing easy read. Worthwhile though if you're a Pilger fan.

A very enlightening and well researched book. Three different focuses - Indonesia, Iraq and the treatment of the native Aboriginees in Australia.
The book highlights the sheer hypocrisy and atrocities the West has masterminded and assisted. I would encourage anyone to read this book. I was moved by all of it. It's hard not to feel anger, sadness, guilt reading this book. The way this is written is very personal, which I think is partly down to the research. Reading this it is understable why John Pilger was so demonized by the traditional press, as he writes what Western systems do not want people to hear.
While the book is 2 decades old now, it's still incredibly relevant.

i was recommended pilger as a more readable author than chomsky and i certainly had less difficulty getting into this clearly constructed book with it's 4 concisely laid out tales of social woe.
pilger's narrative line woven w/facts keeps the story engaging and morbidly educational. probably owing to his journalistic approach (as opposed to chomsky's analytical) there is also a great sense of 'the man in the field' much of the time which adds another dimension of (perceived at least) reality. definitely a clear starting point for anyone wanting to clear thru the b.s. and myths that surround globalisation but not wanting to be bogged down by unnecessary and non-essential detail.

I enjoy reading investigative journalistic readings, particularly this one. This book is brilliant, heavy but light. Pilger uses the language which is easy for us to understand and the topics he has chosen touched our lives. A true eye opener to those who have not been exposed to what is really happening to this world. I have bought three copies and gave them away to my friends. My own copy, unfortunately, has not been returned. If you do have a chance, please read this book and let it touch your heart.

John Pilger a celebrated and award winning investigative journalist, exposes some of the mysteries and deceptions of imperialism in his book ¨The New Rulers¨.
The book is structured into four main chapters. More like four independent essays, albeit all running on the same theme of imperialism. The first chapter, titled "The Model Pupil" deals specifically with Indonesia. It speaks about Suharto’s rule and how he came to power through a coup with the aid of the CIA. During that rule, western corporations divided Indonesia's economy among themselves. Suharto detained and killed (tens of thousands) communists with the aid of the CIA. Although fully aware of these atrocities and the human rights abuses, the western governments and their compliant media heaped praises on Suharto.
The second chapter titled "Paying the Price" talks about the Iraq intervention. A large portion of that essay analyses the effects of that war and of the sanctions blockade on the Iraqi civilians, particularly the vulnerable children. A UN report estimates that half a million children died of treatable diseases due to the blockade on essential medicines. When the US state secretary, Madeline Albright was asked whether the deaths of half a million children was worth to pay for the price of sanctions, she replied, "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price, we think the price is worth it".
The third chapter titled "The Great Game" talks about Afghanistan. It exposes the west´s crocodile tears when they talk about women rights abuses by the Taliban and general economic instability in Afghanistan. After overthrowing the dictatorship of King Zahir´s cousin Mohammad Dawd, the new government was secular, modernist and socialist. Women had equal rights. This was actually my introduction to Australia, I had not read anything substantive on Australia before. Unfortunately, it was a very distressful reading. Reading about how racist Australia marginalised and treated the Aborigines and the government run eugenics-inspired campaign to ¨breed out the Aboriginal blood ¨. In this campaign, young children were literally stolen from their Aboriginal mothers, brought up in a white environments and then married off to white people. The intention was to breed out the Aboriginal strain of blood in a few generations.
The book was pleasant and very insightful, with quotes and information from interviews and declassified documents. It exposed the folly and hypocrisy of the US (western) foreign policy. Showcased how the mainstream western media is generally pliant to the west´s foreign policy objectives. More importantly, it disclosed how the western foreign policy objectives are often intertwined with big corporate interests.
The book is structured into four main chapters. More like four independent essays, albeit all running on the same theme of imperialism. The first chapter, titled "The Model Pupil" deals specifically with Indonesia. It speaks about Suharto’s rule and how he came to power through a coup with the aid of the CIA. During that rule, western corporations divided Indonesia's economy among themselves. Suharto detained and killed (tens of thousands) communists with the aid of the CIA. Although fully aware of these atrocities and the human rights abuses, the western governments and their compliant media heaped praises on Suharto.
The second chapter titled "Paying the Price" talks about the Iraq intervention. A large portion of that essay analyses the effects of that war and of the sanctions blockade on the Iraqi civilians, particularly the vulnerable children. A UN report estimates that half a million children died of treatable diseases due to the blockade on essential medicines. When the US state secretary, Madeline Albright was asked whether the deaths of half a million children was worth to pay for the price of sanctions, she replied, "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price, we think the price is worth it".
The third chapter titled "The Great Game" talks about Afghanistan. It exposes the west´s crocodile tears when they talk about women rights abuses by the Taliban and general economic instability in Afghanistan. After overthrowing the dictatorship of King Zahir´s cousin Mohammad Dawd, the new government was secular, modernist and socialist. Women had equal rights. One of the most compelling, emotive books I have ever read. John Pilger has crafted a fluid exposition of the utterly callous actions, lies and hypocrisies jointly committed by Western political bodies and media, and the disturbing ease with which false narratives about these actions are continually perpetuated.

Very good, very scary. The quest for the accumulation of of wealth, a poison in itself leaks over borders bringing death and destruction to the world. Bold and disillusioning. I will not comment as to who is right and who is wrong but this book sure shakes you out of complacency. It makes you think how deep the propaganda professed by the west runs, and makes you question the premises you base your beliefs upon. And its not just about the propaganda run by the west but also by the political factions in your country, often supported (sometime intentionally and sometimes unintentionally) by the media, feeding us the most contrived version of events that suits them. It is appalling how low the most powerful can stoop to oppress the oppressed and satiate their appetite for power, political and economic.
Sacrificing the comfort of complacency will always be tough, but to keep mum is just not a sustainable policy we can adopt. It reminds of what Martin Niemöller wrote

Fabulous reading! Even though this book covers a lot of factual things through out the chapters, but the journalistic style Pilger exhibit just made it easy to chew.
One fact shocking about what this book uncovers is about Indonesia. I never really know about it before I read Pilger's. It has to be admitted how the state and corporations are now ruling the world; a lot of documentaries had been made to expose it. However, reading this does not has to make us pessimistic (on how less we can really do to change) - the vital thing we know we have control of is ourselves. It is also interesting to embark to understand more about capitalism and money (money illusion, perhaps).

الكاتب عُرف عنه بانه مناهض للامبريالية وناقد قوي للاستعمار القديم والاستعمار الحديث بواسطة الحرب على الارهاب ونشر الديمقراطية واسقاط الدول في مستنقع الديون وضرب الاقتصادات الهشة، في الكتاب ذكر شهادات حية عن البربرية خصوصا البريطانية والامريكية في التعامل مع العراق وحصاره الاقتصادي الذي عزز قوة نظام صدام ومركزيته بينما اضر بالشعب العراقي بدعوى اسلحة الدمار الشامل، تحدث عن نفاق الغرب عندما يغدق الصهاينة في الأسلحة الممنوعة والنووية بينما يحاصر اي دولة اخرى تمتلك نفس الأسلحة. يوجد من حديث الكاتب ان هناك اتفاق غير مكتوب ان قوة امريكا والغرب الرأسمالي تكمن بافقار البقية وانه يجب ان تملك نصف ثروات الشعوب حتى تبقى قائمة وانه لا مجال للعواطف والحقوق الانسانية مع غير الغربي.

John Pilger’s writing is thought provoking and powerful, and for being nearly 20 years old, still rings painfully true. He shines an important light on human rights abuses and the hypocrisies of the west, holding figures of power to account. His work is engaging and sympathetic, well structured and fully researched.
Although it was disappointing that the book only contained 4 chapters, it meant that each chapter had the space to be fully researched and explained. No crucial or emotive parts of the story had to be cut out, Pilger was able to linger on both the statistics and imagery for maximum effect.

January 18, 2011Hmm, 1 million dead Indonesians sounds like rather a lot. Other things I sort of absorbed from this: effects of economic sanctions on post Gulf War Iraq, use of depleted uranium, small percentage of weapons being used actually being smart bombs, some talk about cluster bombs, race to control Caspian sea resources, and Australia's treatment of the Aborigines (seems like sort of an ill-fitting chapter?)

Picked mostly for the title, this book is simply too sad and horrific in it's truth to be very enjoyable. Just page after relentless page of goverment complicity in genocides and mass starvations around the world. Very well researched and backed up by documentation it shows how political figures blatently use the ignorance of populaces to get away with EvIL.

A closer look at the impact of US policy on many small (and large but overlooked) places in the world. It is a counterpoint to conventional history and I require it when I can. Students love it and are gratefully shocked. They are especially surprised by the intense look at US/Indonesian relations.

I would give this work six stars if it were possible. John Pilger is courageous to a fault. His tireless pursuit of justice for those without voices is simply heroic. This book exposes the nature of neo-colonial/imperialist forces at work in the Third World, and the true nature of empire.

Four well-written pieces, covering different parts of the world and periods of modern history. The writing doesn't focus entirely on the political and historical themes, but is illustrated by individual case studies and interviews, which gives the book a more personal feel.
