Ο βουβός προφήτης
Το βιβλίο αυτό είναι γνωστό ως "το μυθιστόρημα του Τρότσκι", αν και, σε τελευταία ανάλυση, ο "βουβός προφήτης" ήταν ο ίδιος ο Ροτ. Γιατί αυτό το μυθιστόρημα, γραμμένο "με πάθος", δεν πιάνει απλά τον αναπόφευκτο δεσμό ανάμεσα σε επανάσταση και ξεπέρασμα των ψευδαισθήσεών της, αλλά προδιαγράφει μια ευαισθησία και μια συνείδηση που μόνο σήμερα, μέσα από πολλές δυσκολίες, φαίνεται να διαμορφώνεται.
Δίπλα σε επαναστάτες, που από τη μία περιπέτειά τους στην άλλη αρχίζουν να μιλούν για γραβάτες, καπέλα και σταυρωτά σακάκια, παρελαύνουν σοσιαλδημοκράτες όψιμοι πατριώτες μιας διαλυμένης Ευρώπης, γραφειοκράτες χορτασμένοι και άπληστοι, ασταθείς διανοούμενοι, κοπέλες δήθεν απελευθερωμένες και ξεπεσμένοι παλιοί αριστοκράτες.

نسخه‌ا� مدرن از داستان قدیمی ایوب پیامبر
یک ریویو خیلی خوب مازیار برای این کتاب نوشته اینجا و منم ارجاع می‌د� به همون. دستش درد نکنه
پ.ن: من آدم مذهبی نیستم و اعتقاد درست حسابی هم ندارم. ولی کاراکتر "مندل سینگر" بنظرم از اون مدل آدمای مذهبی خوب بود.

🔸️بع� از خواندن همزمان چند کتاب سنگین و بعضا مایوس کننده ،خواندن این کتاب سبک و روان واقعا لازم بود. این کتاب ،یک کتاب قشنگ و ساده بدون هیچ پیچش عجیب و غریبی هست که در عین حال خط داستانی و ترجمه ی خوبی دارد .

Opera postuma del grande e adorato Joseph Roth, pubblicata nel 1966, fa rivivere le atmosfere note del canto del finis Austriae comune ad altri autori, come per citare il più noto S. Zweig, inserendo in più il tema della rivoluzione proletaria. Tutto incentrato su un apolide, il giovane Friedrich Kargan, ne ripercorre a ritroso, affidando la memoria dei fatti ad un narratore esterno, testimone degli stessi, le tormentate vicende politiche. Imputo la mancata gradevolezza proprio a questa impronta politica e al momento poco propizio in cui l'ho letto. Cercherò di riprenderlo in mano.

I've been reading it for two days and just recently finished it but somehow I don't remember anything of it. Nothing was standing out for me. But it wasn't terrible to read, quite interesting but still nothing that captured my mind or memory.

After reading this book, I was left with a sense of deep melancholy and alienation. This is not to say that the book is depressing - far from it, it is very engaging and penetrates the superficial public image of revolution leaders created and left to us by media, and brings out the real person that remains hidden behind this image.
Referred to as Roth's Trotsky novel, the book loosely borrows from the life of the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky to draw its own central character Friedrich Kargan. Kargan, at a young age gets involved in the revolution, spends time in the Siberian prison after being caught in an attempt to enter Russia to spread his ideas; he escapes and returns to Russia after the revolution to become the leader of the red army. However, after his return, he is perturbed with the growing bureaucratization of his country and realizes that the revolution he was trying to bring was already a dead idea and he already a man belonging to the past generation. Disappointed, he chooses exile to Germany and spends his time in solitude and a discontent that is caused by rootlessness.
Through the writing, Roth has beautifully impounded on the disillusion that follows a great revolution, when all the ideas leading up to a revolution suddenly become extinct in the world after the inflection point arrives. The peak of such a great up-heaving then, is also its nadir and it leaves the leaders of such a revolution to leave gaping and without goals - now that their work is apparently over.
It is also a novel of exile and alienation, bringing to front in Roth's own words as to how it feels on being banished from your own country. It was a feeling that presumably also played largely in his own life after the collapse of the Hapsburg empire where he had been serving in the army. In many ways, Kargan could be said to draw from Roth himself as much as he drew from Trotsky. Perhaps, that is why the words do not sound superimposed and ring with a disturbing reality, not even losing this reality through the translation. The solitude that is present throughout the book, is suddenly confronted by Roth in the chapters of his exile, specially when Kargan falls ill:
He lay alone in his room, in fever's soft delirium, cosseted by solitude for the first time. Till now he had known only its cruel constancy and its obstinate muteness. Now he recognized its gentle friendship and caught the quite melody of its voice. No friend, no loved one and no comrade. Only thoughts came, like children, simultaneously begotten, born and grown
Expressive words with a resounding sincerity. It is of course credit also to the translator, David Le Vay, that the sincerity transpired to the English text as well.
The Editor's note tells me that the manuscript was never revised and prepared for publication during Roth's lifetime - he had apparently shelved his Trotsky novel, even after making 3 diligent drafts. The published text is a result of a laborious and painstaking task of reconstructing the final work by leafing parts of the three drafts together.

Another small masterpiece from Joseph Roth! Yet another character who has a problem settling down in the period between the World wars. Friedrich is an engaging character and I found myself identifying with a lot of his views. It is always interesting to see the way in which one's revolutionary ideals are absorbed and diluted by the mundane day to day round.
Despite the claim by the critics that Friedrich represents Trotsky in the unfolding drama of the Russian revolution, it makes no real difference to the validity of the tale, which can be read as it stands without looking for correspondences.

Ein historischer Roman aus dem Jahr 1928, den Joseph Roth (1894-1939) zunächst wie üblich 1929 als Fortsetzungsroman in einer Zeitung veröffentlichte und erst viel später in Buchform erschien. Der Roman führt uns in Revolutionskreise in eine Gruppe um einen gewissen Kaukasier namens Savelli, der Stalin nachempfunden sein dürfte. Nicht nur sind die jungen Männer damit beschäftigt, die Revolution in Russland durchzusetzen und zu organisieren, sondern auch in den Westen zu tragen.
Hier kommt unser Protagonist Friedrich Kargan ins Spiel, der Sohn eines Österreichers aus Odessa, der polyglott wie viele Figuren bei Roth zunächst im Grenzgebiet zwischen Österreich und Russland aufwächst und Deserteuren und Revolutionären dabei hilft, die Grenze zu überwinden. Später geht Kargan nach Wien zwecks Schulprüfung und Studium, was ihn aber nur kurzzeitig fesselt. Dort lernt er die schöne Hilde kurz kennen, man verliert sich aber wieder aus den Augen.
Seine Verpflichtungen für die Revolution führen Kargan unter Pseudonym zwischen Österreich und Russland hin und her, bis er eines Tages verhaftet wird und in Verbannung nach Sibirien kommt und ein Jahr dort mit seinen wenigen Freunden lebt. Er und Berzejew fliehen gen Westen, sobald der Erste Weltkrieg ausbricht. Kargan geht über Wien und Deutschland nach Zürich, um dort in Sicherheit den Krieg zu überstehen. Nach Kriegsende wieder Russland und dann wieder Wien, bis er von Savelli nach Moskau gerufen wird und in die endgültige Verbannung geschickt wird. Als Pointe trifft er dort Baranowicz und Alja aus "Die Flucht ohne Ende" und lebt mit ihnen und Berzejew bis zum Ende des Romans. Ebenso wird der doppelte Ich-Erzähler (Kargan/Roth) wiederbelebt.
Wie bei "Die Flucht ohne Ende" gilt auch hier dasselbe. Roth spannt eine tolle Grundstruktur auf, die mit vielerlei Arten von Geschichten hätten gefüllt werden können, schafft es aber nicht, einen überzeugenden Roman daraus zu machen. Einer der großen Russen oder Franzosen hätte einen Welterfolg daraus gemacht.
Weder erfahren wir Politisches, Philosophies, Spannendes oder Historisches über die Revolution und ihre Hauptfiguren, noch über den Ersten Weltkrieg, der gewohnt skizzenhaft im Hintergrund vorbeirauscht. Selbiges gilt für Sibirien und die Verbannung sowie die Flucht in den Westen. Der Verlust der Heimat mit dem Zusammenbruch Österreich-Ungarns wird ebenso bloß angedeutet. Alles wird nur blass und schemenhaft erwähnt.
Neu ist immerhin eine weitere Ebene, nämlich die unerfüllte, zaghafte und distanzierte Liebesgeschichte zwischen Friedrich und Hilde. Man erkennt schon eine gewisse Weiterentwicklung Roths als Erzähler, der sprachlich wunderschön zu schreiben vermag, aber keine der erwähnten Bestandteile wird vertieft. Und so wird aus etwas, was ein epochaler Roman hätte werden können ein, na ja, mehr oder weniger unterhaltender blasser Roman, mit dem ich zeitweilig zu kämpfen hatte, um bei der Stange zu bleiben.

چرا زندگی بشر همواره قرین با رنج است؟ آیا حکمتی در این رنج‌ه� نهفته است؟ این پرسش� همواره ذهن بشر را به خود مشغول داشته است. فلسفه جست‌وج� کرده و گاه پرسش‌ها� دیگری نیز افزوده است و ادیان هریک پاسخی در آستین داشته‌ان�. ادبیات نیز در این میان راه خود را رفته و «ایوب» رمان ستایش‌شده� یوزف روت از آن جمله است. «ایوب» را می‌توا� اودیسه‌ا� نامید که از ده‌کوره‌ا� یهودی‌نشی� در شرق اروپا آغاز می‌شو� و به دنیای آن‌سو� آب‌ها� به امریکای سکولار، می‌رس�. در پایان، نه دنیا همان دنیای آغاز رمان است و نه مندل سینگر همان مکتب‌دا� ساده.
«ایوب»، علاوه بر تمام همتایان معاصرش که حکمت رنج‌ها� بشری را دستمایه قرار داده‌اند� ازجمله «محاکمه» اثر کافکا، از منظر تاریخی نیز اسلافی دارد: از «کتاب ایوب» تا «ایوبِ» یوزف روت و بلکه راهی از این‌ه� درازتر. حتی در میان متون نزدیک به «کتاب ایوبِ» عهد عتیق ما «وصیت ایوب» را داریم که ادامۀ داستان ایوب است. می‌توا� سرآغاز این رنجنامه‌نویس� را حتی به صدها و هزارها سال پیش از «کتاب ایوب»، به زمانی برد که نه «زمین عوص» بود و نه «مردی ایوب‌نام»� حتی به آن نخستین مویۀ زنی در جست‌وجو� حکمت مرگ فرزندش.
یوزف روت که خود از یهودیان شرق اروپا بوده است، در مقالۀ بلندی، گزارش کاملی از اوضاع زندگی یهودیان شرق اروپا می‌ده�. روت شرق اروپا را شرقِ دنیای غرب می‌دانست� است، نیمۀ نادیده‌ماند� و بلکه تحقیر‌شدۀ فرهنگ غرب که نیمۀ دیگر برایش لطیفه می‌ساز�. به همین دلیل مخاطب «ایوب» خوانندگانی هستند که درد را، عظمت انسان را و آلودگی‌ا� را که همه‌ج� ملازم رنج است محترم می‌شمرن�: آن دسته از مردمان که به دُشک‌ها� تمیزشان نمی‌نازند� آنها که احساس می‌کنن� شرقْ ارمغان‌ها� بسیاری برایشان دارد و می‌دانن� شرقْ خاستگاه انسان‌ه� و افکار بزرگ و مفیدی است که به شکل‌گیر� و بسط تمدن غرب یاری رسانده‌ان�
تنها امید بود که سر مردن نداشت.همه همسایه ها میگفتند او علیل باقی میماند.مصیبت ندیده بودند و مصیبت ندیده چه می فهمد که معجزه چیست.حتی مصیبت دیده هم به معجزه اعتقادی ندارد.
ایوب پر از توصیفات جاندار از رنج است... ایوب سفری ادیسه وار در دنیای نو و اساطیر... ایوب یک قصه است قصه ادمی گیر افتاده در دنیای نو با اعتقادات پوسیده که چون بند نافی او را به دنیا و درک از جهان متصل می کند... برای نوشیدن از توصیفات درخشان نویسنده هم شده لذت این سفر ادیسه وار را از خود دریغ نکنید...

... تصویر باد و تن مندل و درخت نحیفی در ذهن چنان درخشان بود... من گاهی مات میشدم از این همه توانایی نویسنده در توصیف... بخوانید خلاصه هیچ برایمان نمانده جز همین لذت ها همین واحه ها ی کوتاه....

چرا زندگی بشر همواره قرین با رنج است؟ آیا حکمتی در این رنج‌ه� نهفته است؟ این پرسش� همواره ذهن بشر را به خود مشغول داشته است. فلسفه جست‌وج� کرده و گاه پرسش‌ها� دیگری نیز افزوده است و ادیان هریک پاسخی در آستین داشته‌ان�. ادبیات نیز در این میان راه خود را رفته و «ایوب» رمان ستایش‌شده� یوزف روت از آن جمله است. «ایوب» را می‌توا� اودیسه‌ا� نامید که از ده‌کوره‌ا� یهودی‌نشی� در شرق اروپا آغاز می‌شو� و به دنیای آن‌سو� آب‌ها� به امریکای سکولار، می‌رس�. در پایان، نه دنیا همان دنیای آغاز رمان است و نه مندل سینگر همان مکتب‌دا� ساده.
«ایوب»، علاوه بر تمام همتایان معاصرش که حکمت رنج‌ها� بشری را دستمایه قرار داده‌اند� ازجمله «محاکمه» اثر کافکا، از منظر تاریخی نیز اسلافی دارد: از «کتاب ایوب» تا «ایوبِ» یوزف روت و بلکه راهی از این‌ه� درازتر. حتی در میان متون نزدیک به «کتاب ایوبِ» عهد عتیق ما «وصیت ایوب» را داریم که ادامۀ داستان ایوب است. می‌توا� سرآغاز این رنجنامه‌نویس� را حتی به صدها و هزارها سال پیش از «کتاب ایوب»، به زمانی برد که نه «زمین عوص» بود و نه «مردی ایوب‌نام»� حتی به آن نخستین مویۀ زنی در جست‌وجو� حکمت مرگ فرزندش.
یوزف روت که خود از یهودیان شرق اروپا بوده است، در مقالۀ بلندی، گزارش کاملی از اوضاع زندگی یهودیان شرق اروپا می‌ده�. روت شرق اروپا را شرقِ دنیای غرب می‌دانست� است، نیمۀ نادیده‌ماند� و بلکه تحقیر‌شدۀ فرهنگ غرب که نیمۀ دیگر برایش لطیفه می‌ساز�. به همین دلیل مخاطب «ایوب» خوانندگانی هستند که درد را، عظمت انسان را و آلودگی‌ا� را که همه‌ج� ملازم رنج است محترم می‌شمرن�: آن دسته از مردمان که به دُشک‌ها� تمیزشان نمی‌نازند� آنها که احساس می‌کنن� شرقْ ارمغان‌ها� بسیاری برایشان دارد و می‌دانن� شرقْ خاستگاه انسان‌ه� و افکار بزرگ و مفیدی است که به شکل‌گیر� و بسط تمدن غرب یاری رسانده‌ان�
تنها امید بود که سر مردن نداشت.همه همسایه ها میگفتند او علیل باقی میماند.مصیبت ندیده بودند و مصیبت ندیده چه می فهمد که معجزه چیست.حتی مصیبت دیده هم به معجزه اعتقادی ندارد.
ایوب پر از توصیفات جاندار از رنج است... ایوب سفری ادیسه وار در دنیای نو و اساطیر... ایوب یک قصه است قصه ادمی گیر افتاده در دنیای نو با اعتقادات پوسیده که چون بند نافی او را به دنیا و درک از جهان متصل می کند... برای نوشیدن از توصیفات درخشان نویسنده هم شده لذت این سفر ادیسه وار را از خود دریغ نکنید...

... تصویر باد و تن مندل و درخت نحیفی در ذهن چنان درخشان بود... من گاهی مات میشدم از این همه توانایی نویسنده در توصیف... بخوانید خلاصه هیچ برایمان نمانده جز همین لذت ها همین واحه ها ی کوتاه....

Jag blev intresserad av denna bok efter recensionen i SvD och av att den i mycket handlar om samma tid som Stefan Zweigs "Världen av igår" och den omvälvande utvecklingen i Europa kring första världskriget sett ur enskilda människors perspektiv.
Roths språk är ibland helt fascinerande. Jag skrattade högt åt denna personbeskrivning:
"Han var en hedersman med en lätt antydan till mage och med så enkla anletsdrag att ett barn kunde ha ritat av dem".

Στο μεταξύ η ώρα είναι δέκα, οι γραμματείς κι οι υπουργοί καταφθάνουν στα γραφεία τους, υπογράφουν, υπογράφουν, τηλεγραφούν, υπαγορεύουν, τηλεφωνούν. Στις εφημερίδες δουλεύουν οι στενογράφοι, δίνουν τα φύλλα στους συντάκτες που κρύβουν και φανερώνουν, καλύπτουν και αποκαλύπτουν. Και σαν να μην έγινε τίποτα όλη τη μέρα, το βράδυ χτυπούν καμπανάκια και τα θέατρα γεμίζουν γυναίκες, λουλούδια, αρώματα. Και ύστερα ο κόσμος ξανακοιμάται. Εμείς όμως μένουμε ξύπνιοι. Είναι εμφανές στον αναγνώστη ότι το βιβλίο έχει μείνει ημιτελές. Η αίσθηση ότι δεν έχει την τελική του μορφή δεν αναιρεί ορισμένες στιγμές εξαιρετικής γραφής, αλλά το ημιτελές του πράγματος χαρακτηρίζει τη δομή των ηρώων, την αποτύπωση της εποχής και του ιστορικού πλαισίου (αμφότερα ανύπαρκτα) και το ξετύλιγμα της πλοκής (που είναι υποτυπώδης). Τα πολιτικά συμπεράσματα του βιβλίου δεν είναι αδιάφορα, αλλά κινούνται στα όρια του κλισέ. Αλλά δεν διαβάζουμε το βιβλίο για το πολιτικό αισθητήριο του συγγραφέα.
Κλείνοντας: ο Roth μας έχει χαρίσει καλύτερα βιβλία. Δεν με άφησε αδιάφορη, αλλά δεν μου φάνηκε ενδιαφέρον, ώστε να το προτείνω. Ίσως το ότι είχε απορριφθεί αρχικά από τον εκδοτικό οίκο, έχει να κάνει με όλα τα παραπάνω.

He aquí una novela que sobrevivió entre los manuscritos de Roth durante más de cuatro décadas. Se trata de una especie de biografía de Trostski en la que el autor pone en juego su perfil revolucionario y sus intereses personales para mostrar la incompatibilidad que existe entre ambos discursos. Un buen libro para adentrarse en los problemas del exilio, la proclividad al mal de los revolucionarios y el inevitable destino del hombre a la incomprensión.

μεγάλη αναταραχή, ωραία κατάσταση (ΝΟΤ!).. Τι ζήσανε κι αυτοί οι άνθρωποι σ' ΑΥΤΗΝ την περιοχή του πλανήτη ΑΥΤΗΝ την εποχή.. φανταστείτε να έχεις μεγαλώσει σε μία χώρα, ας πούμε στην Ελλάδα, και να γεράσεις σε μια χώρα όπως η νότια Πελοπόννησος (και νάσαι Βλάχος ανάμεσα σε Μανιάτες)..

I have loved Joseph Roth's novels, however, I feel this has aged badly as it's an allegory for a political reality that isn't that relevant to the future we live in, so it's just a bit confusing/boring because the book was written in and for the audience of 1929. In defense of Joseph Roth a bunch of his other novels have seemed timeless to my tastes.

A trip to the states allowed me to order copies of everything of his I haven't read. At one level this a character wandering Europe between the World wars. At another, this is Roth's explanation of what went wrong with the Russian revolution: parable of Trotsky and Stalin. I expected a more literal historical treatment and got what Roth thought it felt like to be Trotsky.
"And when from time to time he spoke of this country as 'we', he believed himself to be equally discreet and blameless in his speech. And yet his 'we', his 'our', his 'us' recalled the way in which the employees of a large department store identify themselves with their firm event though they do not share their master's income.
"First it is a manifestation of individuality. Pencil in hand, a sheet of white paper in front of me. From a small piece of paper, not to mention a large sheet, there emanates a stillness and a solitude. A desert could not be more tranquil. Sit down with an empty notebook in a noisy cafe - you are at once alone. Second, it's practical, because there are various things one shouldn't forget. Third, a diary is a safeguard against the all-too-hectic activity to which our calling condemns us, as it were. It helps us to distance events. Fourth, I write because Savelli would despise it as bourgeois sentimentality if he knew about it."

I found it, although it is a fictionalization of a historical person's life, of a significant, controversial, almost mythical person, rather simple and light. The narrative flows with a chraracter presented as usually being detached from a very turbulent era and country, althought he was one of the protagonists, who changed the course of history. Maybe this was the secret of his grandeur, leading in action mostly, and secondly in intellectual activity.
The description of historical facts is diminished to minimum; the personal and emotional life of the hero prevails over an impersonal description of movements, action, revolutions, diplomatic and royal intrigues. His relations are depicted vividly, captivating, sometimes only, the imagination. A melancholic tone, of a past epoch, that has gone for ever, make the reading nostalgic.

The Knut Hamsun is slow, meandering...was Hamsun on drugs?I am being serious, this reads , almost like Geza Csaths stories...who actually was on morphine. Roth, conversely, writes like a man drunk on life and knowing he may die tomorrow and he HAS to get this out before he does.Always a pleasure reading the real, the only Roth any sensible reader should read. Every page has a sentence of truth that one feels the need to copy on paper, to share with a loved one. My wife hates it when I read anything by Roth. His insights are magical. Now, I must return to the book, baby is asleep and this househusband has some reading to do...

След обикновените, отчаяни, бедни и страдащи хорица на Йозеф Рот не остават тъга и депресия. Остават наситени и ярки образи, пейзажи и случки, желание да четеш още и още от неговата поезия в проза.
Единственият минус на тази книга е дразнещото количество очеизбождащи грешки.

Es lockern sich die sogenannten Familienbande. Die armen Menschen verbreiteten den Geruch von Gulasch, alten Kleidern und Regen. Obwohl ich radikal bin, liebe ich die Mitte. Wir empören uns nicht, klagen nicht an, verteidigen nicht, erwarten gar nichts, fürchten gar nichts � � daß wir nicht freiwillig sterben, ist alles. Unmerklich wie ein Doppelkinn bildet sich seine revolutionäre Haltung.
