Darkland revolves around our character Cassie, who's trapped in this place, with no memories or whatsoever, she has to win the trials and escape. Which is what everyone's motives are. Until Khaos 'a fucking clown' comes along.
I do not have many words to describe this book. Laura Vega's second book, and this book was actually good. I also would like to thank her for giving me an arc 💌 copy in exchange of nothing! which was so sweet of her honestly♥️ and also being her ST member🤭.
The artwork is so beautiful, the trials places, even Cassie and Khaos, and Morvax too, I loved their artwork and the way they are described here too was so much better!
The plot was very well written to me, but of course there is more plot and depth in the book and I'm like 😀. Because I have to wait for the second book (im)patiently. I was very well interested with the writing style. Even though in the starting I was so hesitant, and someone felt a bit odd to me, maybe because it's like where the readers are mentioned in spotlight haha.
Cassie is a strong stubborn character, and even if she forgot her memories, her heart would remember her always by nature. This book goes on with the future and past perspectives, making it delve on her memories. Of course everything is not what it seems?!?! And I'm left wanting for more because what was that?!?! What In the World is happening rn.
Khaos, well I have no words for him, I certainly liked him more than anything, but the ending!?! I'm so unsure about him, and what to do with him like what?!? I'm well surprised and shocked. He's like a sunshine character too. I loved reading about him.
Well Cassie and Khaos together were well written, I loved their chemistry, even though the 'Almost Instant Love' trope didn't fit me quite right. But I absolutely loved the banter they had, often said things that made me laugh and giggle. The ending of this book of course as mentioned earlier, left me wanting for more. I was very well surprised, I expected much of that, but it was done even wayyy more. So I enjoyed this book.
There are so many characters such as Sylrae, Keele, Ella, Charlie that we are introduced all to and I certainly was curious about them all. They all are having a certain story that is kept to themselves, and then revealed eventually [or is it?]. I also finished this book like in 2-3 days, but I was also invested like whenever I would put it off and sleep [because of my extra classes] this book would revolve around me and I would try my best not to think much more or else I would have never slept haha.
The only reason I haven't rated it five is because the depth to me was a bit light[it wasn't THAT light btw.], as if depending on the detailing, I'm pretty sure it's actually alright, but I wanted a bit depth moreover at the end and in the dark memories, the instant love 'almost' trope.
But don't let my oddness fool you, I loved this book a lot still! Would I recommend it? If you loved Phantasma, and Caraval sort of books, I would say this book will absolutely suit you! With enchanting artwork, trials and betrayal, this book will take you on an another level. It releases on 1st April.
.preread. [soon!] the arc just dropped today♥️ and because of my extra classes I'm gonna pause myself, and read this on my weekends and holidays!🫶
.3/2/25. I'm so excited for this book👀 Cassie and Khaos better serve
Where to begin, it’s Alice in Wonderland meet Labrinth with some carnival mischief. It’s hard to explain because it’s nothing I’ve ever read before and trust me, it’s incredible. 🎠
Laura Vega has fast become one of my auto buy authors. Her writing style and world building is completely encapsulating and the imagery she creates makes it so damn easy to read.
Her characters have wit and charisma, they’re dangerous but in such a fun and exhilarating way. Cassie is an absolute powerhouse FMC, armed with nothing but a key she must navigate through a world ruled by cruel Godesses who create trials and challenges where reality and delusion collide.
Cassie meets a God of Mischief whose obscure guidance makes for a very interesting ally or enemy depending on the choices she makes along the way.
With twists and turns, amazing banter and chemistry this wonderful world is engaging from the first page.
My only complaint is now I have to wait for the second instalment 🫠 I’m completely invested.

This book was so fun, and mind puzzling. Twists and turns and did not know how it would end or even how it had began !! There were dark themes and themes of redemption. I really enjoyed the lore of the world and how each tier of god and human related to each other and the different lands related to each other. The politics of how the essential gods use others was fascinating. I enjoyed the games and the trials that was the bases of most of the story. Very intellectually engaging and fun at the same time. The Romance aspect of the story was sweet and adorable. Definitely a fun read.

I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a beta reader for Darkland from the author! 🫶
Darkland is a masterpiece! 🥹🖤 My words to describe how I feel about this book will not serve it justice because it is truly such a beautiful, evocative, and incredible story that is going to remain forever in my heart! 💕 It is simply everything and I have never read anything like this in my life. I am so obsessed with this world and all of the characters. The world-building and character development is incredible beyond words. I felt so deeply for Cassie as I was reading this and I was able to feel all of the emotions and the pain that she was going through and it brought me through such a rollercoaster of emotions. This story went so far as to make me ugly cry and break my heart multiple times during the reading experience! 😭💔
I highlighted so many quotes while reading this story because there are so many that stood out to me! 😍😍The whole time I was reading I felt like I was peeling an onion because there is so much mystery that had me captivated from beginning to end. I legitimately could not put it down and binge-read it for the past several hours! 🫶 I had so many theories and still have so many more for what is to come. I love this book so much and I will be recommending to everyone I know! ❤️
If you love romantasy, epic world building, forced proximity, Caraval meets Alice in Wonderland meets Monsters Inc vibes, he falls first, lots of emotions, action, trials be sure to pick it up and read because it’s an absolute must-read! 🫶
Laura is a literary genius. Her books always take you on a wild adventure full of mischief and mayhem and have you so captivated by the story that you cannot put it down. Darkland is no exception. The story that you have woven of Cassie, Khaos and Morvax is brilliant and the whole world that you have created is stunning. I honestly cannot wait for more...
“Your mouth, he said, his tone dropping to something softer, heavier. “It’s crazy beautiful. And your lashes—have I ever told you that when you look at me, I can barely hold it together? That beauty mark? I’ve pictured kissing it more times than I can count. And your white hair... His hand slid to a strand of it, twirling it slowly. “It’s so silky, I’m convinced you could leash me with it. Cage me in those eyes. Cage me in you.
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Holy plot twists, this book was INSANE in the BEST way!!! From the very first page, I was immediately sucked in, captivated and utterly entranced by the world of Darkland. The magic system, and hierarchy of power was so unique and interesting to me, and I was consistently guessing what everyone’s angle was. I won’t go into too much detail about how everything goes down in the beginning, because believe me, you’ll need to read it yourself. So, I’m going to go over my favorite highlights and convince you to go on this adventure with me.
First, our female lead Cassie is the sassiest, most troublesome, quick-witted character I have had the pleasure of reading in a while. Her solutions to problems make so much sense, especially with everything that she’s gone through. She feels incredibly human, and relatable in the sense that makes us ask the question of ourselves: ‘What lengths would you go to, to stay alive? I have so many questions about her, and I am dying to know more in the second installment of this story.
Next, I have to mention Khaos, the mischievous trickster god (Think Loki but make him blond) who is the ringmaster for all the Darkland games. Through a twisted turn of events, Cassie forms a sort of alliance with him. He’s incredibly swoony, coy, and extremely cunning. I am proud to say he’s not only my new book boyfriend, but book fiancé. 🫶
Their romance gave me all the feels. I believe the author did excellently with the, “I love to hate you, hate to love you trope, and it had me squealing every time they would lock eyes with each other. This book is New Adult, and there is one low-spice but slightly descriptive scene closer to the end that can be skipped, but I found it to be sweet and done with tact and respect.
AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT ENDING?! I am not okay, I don’t know how I’m supposed to wait for the second book, I may just have to find a way into Darkland myself to fix a few of the problems including one very glaring one that I can’t talk about for fear of spoiling you. 😭
In conclusion, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk and I hope you will pick up this book immediately or at least move it to the very top of your TBR. This was a wild, beautiful ride that I will never forget, and perfect for fans of Caraval and the Night Circus. 🎪🖤
Before you go to Darkland, however, just remember Always play a better game.
***Thank you to Laura Vega for the ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts and review. Congratulations on your second novel, it was amazing!!!
First I just have to say that Darkland by Laura Vega is the dark wonderland fantasy with an Icy from the Trix inspired fmc I never knew I needed until now!❄️ Alice in Borderland meets Wonderland with the vibes of Caraval, and OUABH.🎪🎡🎠
The author Mrs.Vega's writing style, and her attention to detail is top-tier. Every single chapter unlocks a secret that is cleverly hidden with flashbacks, and riddles.
The fmc Cassie is a fearless, strong, and beautiful woman just like Icy from the tv show Winx Club.Cassie bravely confronts her past, and she always stays true to herself no matter what.
The mmc Khaos a mysterious man with mad hatter vibes that loves a good riddle, and has many secrets. I cannot say what his role in the story is because it's a spoiler, but I will say that him,and Cassie are perfect for each other especially since they are both chaotic fun in the best way.
I love the circus aesthetic throughout the entire story especially the rides. My favorite rides are definitely the crystal carousel, and the water ride. Both scenes are dangerously fun,and that one moment where Cassie just has crazy fun had me laughing nonstop.
The villain in the story is the literal definition of morally gray with looks that can kill. The moment I figured out why he hates Cassie so much I was absolutely shocked. The plot twist on the last chapter made me almost want to throw my phone because of how good it is.
Readers should definitely add Darkland by Laura Vega to their tbr if they love:
1.A fmc that is strong, fearless, and beautiful just like Icy from Winx Club tv show.❄️❄️
2.Enemies to lovers romance
3.Morally gray villain
4. Circus aesthetic with dark wonderland vibes. 5.Chaotic fun characters
6.A mmc that is mysterious & attractive
7. Moments where the banter is bantering
8. Magic & unusual crystal creatures
Darkland by Laura Vega releases on April 1st 2025,and can be purchased as a paperback or ebook on Amazon.✨️
Thank you Mrs.Vega for the opportunity to read your stunning book, and I am obsessed with the world, and the characters.🎪🎠🎡❄️ Definitely reading the sequel when it is ready!
I want to thank author @authorlauravega for kindly sending me an e-Arc to review. The following opinion is my very own.
Ratings: Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) Spice: 🌶️🌶️ (2/5)
Release date: 1 April 2025 (not a joke!)
Short review: In "Darkland" the author gathers overused fantasy plots and tropes to create something new and interesting. From woldbuilding, characters, atmosphere and writing style, it's definitely worth your time!
Long review:
"Darkland" by Laura Vega is an interesting book. You get trials, interesting world building, gods and creatures, complicated family relationships and drama. (The final plot twist? Chefs kiss!)
In "Darkland", the readers follow Cassie, a girl that's been through a lot but still keeps being strong. After a series of unfortunate events (get it?) she must compete in a game consisting in multiple trials. The big prize? A wish.
Together with Khaos, an annoyingly handsome god, they navigate through all the challenges. But you didn't expect a happy ending so fast, didn't you? Well, Laura will surprise you with a bitter sweet ending (for now, hopefully) that's somehow a cliffhanger (but not an annoying one).
It was beautifully written, the prose flowing nicely. Clear and inspired, so you didn't get bored. The world building was quite complex without being too much. You feel like you're being guided through the world, not dragged, and that's nice. Together with Cassie, you learn about everything: places, history, gods, court. The author keeps it short and sweet and honestly, I like that.
It was definitely interesting to follow the characters. Cassie's and Khaos' moments were definitely sugar and spice (I rate the book 2 🌶/5) and are overall well-developed. I would've liked to see more of the villain, but I suspect I (and the other readers) will get to know him more in the next books.
Not quite book related, but I'd like to point out Laura Vega's attention to detail. Each chapter has a small title image and there are quite a few beautiful illustrations (made by real artists). I love little details! This shows how much more work the author is willing to do for the readers!
This was one of those books that I started and knew immediately that I would be obsessed and it would be a 5 star read that I won’t shut up about.
And I won’t shut up about it.
This is Caraval x Alice in Wonderland x Phantasma
Welcome to Darkland- a world full of “marvelous obsidian buildings and towering crystal castles, pristine white and cloudy dark carousels. This book is a rollercoaster ride full of riddles, deadly games, and my personal favorite enemies to lovers.
I cannot wait for you to meet Cassie and Khaos. You will be very entertained with these two. Never a dull moment (or shard) over here.
Blurb: Cassie is trapped in a shimmering crystal cage, deep within Darkland, a magical theme park ruled by goddesses who revel in human trials. Armed with only a mysterious key, she must navigate a world where reality shifts and danger lurks at every turn. The mirrors taunt her with eerie reflections, each one hiding secrets she must uncover to escape.
As she ventures deeper, Cassie crosses paths with Khaos, a god of strategy and mischief. His cryptic guidance could lead her to freedom or pull her further into the game's dark grip. Can she trust him, or is he just another piece in this twisted puzzle?

Take Caraval and make it way deadlier with much higher stakes. Now add in a FMC who is highly determined and strong-willed but lost her memories what an insane ride.
I truly picked up this book any chance I got because I was dying to know what wild trial would be faced next or where Cassie would be going in this unique world. I believe this book sets up wonderfully for the series and I have the strong sense that even though we’ve learned a lot about this world we still don’t know what we don’t know. I have no negative notes here because the world and plot was unique and captured my attention. I didn’t feel there were plot holes or like I didn’t understand the settings created. Additionally, I feel it’s not often that I truly don’t see a plot twist coming and just WOW that ending.
Honorable mentions:
- the MMC, Khaos 🤌🏼😮 - the artwork 🤩 - “Wait, who are you? - the MAP 🗺 - the Rules of the Realms 🗡 - and lastly. BOTH the dedications 🤍🖤
Talk about a truly immersive experience one I won’t soon forget, and one I won’t stop suggesting either.
I started this book on a Thursday and finished it by the weekend. I was absolutely addicted and would have finished it even sooner if it weren’t for my 95 punishment, I mean, job.
Cassie wakes up trapped in Darkland with no memories and is forced to compete in a deadly game for entertainment. Everyone else has lost their memories too, and while some fight to win them back, others are just trying to survive. There’s so much mystery, tons of annoying riddles*, wild twists, and witty banter packed into this story.
*Sorry, I’m 100% like Cassie and hate riddles too. LOLOLOL.
Cassie is easily one of the most badass FMCs I’ve read this year. It was so refreshing to see a strong, sharp, quick-thinking heroine who’s also hilariously sassy and witty.
The banter and slow-burn flirting between Cassie and Khaos was so good. It was a little bittersweet at times because Cassie has her walls up and a sharp tongue, but Khaos is an absolute FOOL for her, and I loved it.
I personally loved the POV style. You get Cassie’s present day perspective but also glimpses into her past memories, so the story slowly unravels itself. It reminded me a lot of the structure in Vicious by V.E. Schwab. If you’re not a fan of stories that bounce between past and present, proceed with caution but TRUST ME, it all makes perfect sense as you read.
I would recommend this to anyone who loves Alice in Wonderland vibes mixed with a bit of Phantasma energy. I HAVE SOME THEORIES, and I desperately need someone to talk to, so please read this and DM me.
The ending shattered my heart, and I’m already dying for the next book. Please, Laura I need it ASAP!!
Another splendid novel 🤍 Laura simply knows how to captivate readers w/ her whimsical writing, weaving refreshing tales full of heartache 😭😭😭 I literally know by now my souls going to be destroyed whenever I pick up one of her books.
Just as in A Realm Of Chaos And Void (TCS), her previous series, she wondrously adapts a sort of memory trope. Whilst the two are COMPLETELY different, Laura’s known for messing w/ the mind of her readers. What you think you know is only what she wants you to know And even then, you just really never know lol!
Her inclusion of theme park rides into deadly games & trials, all while trying to solve mysteries & regain pieces of yourself, Cassie is better than me lmfao. I’m literally Gwen on page 407 ☠️ Just turn me into dust at that point pls.
Overall, this was a rollercoaster 🎢 ride, literally. It was fast, full of twists & turns, & made me want to vomit at the end- ‘Cause that ending?!
Getting to read Darkland has been such a thrilling ride. I genuinely want to thank Laura Vega from the bottom of my heart for trusting us with this story and keeping us immersed in the world of Darkland.❤️ If I had to describe it in one word? Chaos. And I mean that in every sense—wild, unhinged, and impossible to look away from.😚
🔮 What to Expect:
⭐️ Reckless FMC 🔥 ⭐️ Chaotic MMC 🎭 ⭐️ He falls first (and hard) 💘 ⭐️ Instant yet intense love ❤️ ⭐️ Power struggles and deadly trials 👑 ⭐️ Forced proximity with high stakes 🎪
The story throws us into Darkland, a place where danger lurks in riddles, trials, and secrets buried deep.🤫 Cassie, our fearless and unpredictable heroine, doesn’t just face this world—she challenges it. She makes bold, reckless choices, sometimes with no regard for the consequences.🖤 Then there’s Khaos—living up to his name in every way. He’s a force of nature, wild and untamed, but with a surprising tenderness beneath it all. Together, they create an electrifying, chaotic duo that keeps you on edge.🤭
“It’s all just a game to you, 》“I told you before—nothing is ever just a game.
Darkland itself is a world unlike any other—a game of survival where you either win or lose everything. Vega’s worldbuilding is immersive and layered, making it impossible to put the book down. The mysteries unravel piece by piece, yet just when you think you have the answers, the story flips everything on its head. Lies, betrayals, power struggles—it’s all woven together masterfully. The stakes are impossibly high.🎠🎡
Losing can still be winning. Is it?👀
Cassie is one of the most unique heroines I’ve read. Her sass, her fearlessness, the way she refuses to break no matter how much the world throws at her—it’s impossible not to root for her.🩷🩷
“And I see the most beautiful eyes. I prefer you like this, always.
And Khaos? He’s an enigma wrapped in golden retriever energy, both infuriating and irresistible in the best way possible. And he's such a big flirt with Cassie!! Their connection isn’t just about romance—it’s raw, chaotic, and all-consuming. And the way he watches over Cassie? Absolutely swoon-worthy. But... the ending... nooooo😭
“When you said this palace was the most beautiful thing you’ve seen so far. It’s because you haven’t seen yourself smile yet. Ughhh... my heart. (IYKYK.😭)
Their chemistry is pure chaos—charged, unpredictable, and so much more than just insta-love. Their banter razor-sharp, and their dynamic? Pure, beautiful chaos. While Cassie is the storm, Khaos is both the calm and the whirlwind that follows.✨️
‘Khaos was chaos itself—untamed, impossible—but every inch of me screamed that he was home.
The side characters add so much depth to the story. Sylrae, Ella, and Charlie all bring something special, making the world feel richer and more layered. And then there’s Morvax I have so many mixed feelings. I need answers. Why? Just why?😧
And the emotional depth? Unexpected and devastating. The last few chapters were a gut punch, filled with twists that left me reeling. The betrayals, the choices, the heartbreak—it lingers long after you turn the final page. And it also left me with so many questions and a desperate need for Book 2.😩
If you love fantasy infused with gods and goddesses, amusement park vibes, deadly trials, power struggles, a love that's both beautiful and haunting, and a world that pulls you in completely, Darkland is for you. And trust me—you’ll be counting down the days for Book 2!😉🫶
Where oh were to begin! Laura Vega has done it again with Darkland. I thought that I loved her first novel, The Crimson Snow; little did I know the obsession Darkland would create in my mind. Darkland is very well crafted (IMO), creating a rich and unique fantasy world that sucks you in. The world-building, characters, and hard-hitting quotes (especially the BANTER!) come together to make this book intoxicating. So much to the point that when you finish reading it, you have to sit on the floor of your bathroom and talk about what you just read. Vega keeps you guessing with every page. She lets you think one thing and then slowly starts to flip it on you. She beautifully develops the characters, along with others, so that you get attached to them and genuinely feel their emotions. I know that my heart was hurting for Cassie and Khaos multiple times, and all I could do was trust that Vega would not completely crush my heart. You will absolutely go on an emotional rollercoaster ride, which is fitting, considering Darkland is quite literally an amusement park-style prison.
I’ll briefly touch on the MC characters: Cassie is our FMC. She is a spunky, stabby (stab first, ask questions later kind of gal) powerhouse. Yet, she has a very caring heart that is constantly getting her into trouble when she sees someone else in need. Khaos is our MMC. He is a god of mischief and is consistently described as a “clown. His personality reminds me a lot of if a fun, sarcastic clown (I’m mainly talking humor-wise) was combined with Loki and a golden retriever. His quick wit, charisma, sarcasm, and protectiveness are all perks of his character.
I am an annotator when it comes to reading. The number of things I highlighted is astronomical—one might even say “maddening or “chaotic " (yes.I’m making a “Khaos pun; deal with it! 😝). If you want to know how much highlighting I did.my Kindle says I highlighted 259 things 👀.
Some quotes might make you giggle because of the banter😍: “‘You’re totally my type, so that helps. ‘You’re totally not. I snapped back. ‘I’m everyone’s type, he replied.
Some might make you lose your mind😱: “Why was the crowned bunny at the fair smiling?
Some might make you laugh so hard🤣: “Khaos. Happy now? Not exactly a smooth name, though, is it? Clown suits you better.
Some might make you cry😭: “Actually, you’re the most unexpected plot twist in my life, Cassie. One I’d relive over and over. Or “Because I like to believe there’s something better there.Maybe I can write my own story there someday.
Some might make you question everything🤨: “Play a better game. Or “Let the real chaos unfold again.
I have many theories as to where Vega may take the next book, but if I have learned anything about her writing style, it's that she’s not afraid to take us for a ride, break our hearts, put a band-aid on them, then rip the band-aid off again, to eventually be sown up after much more chaos.
Tropes: ⚔️Enemies to Lovers 🎢he Falls first 🫂Forced proximity ♠️ sLiGhTlY “mAd”MaIn ChArAcTeRs (think Alice in Wonderland vibes) 🎪High stakes Games & trials 👑gods and goddesses ❓Amnesia/stolen Memories ✨unique Fantasy world
If you enjoy those tropes along with romantasy, forced proximity/allies, the vibes of Alice in Wonderland combined with Caraval and The Hunger Games, this will definitely be a book you will want to read. I guarantee you will not want to put it down!
I can’t wait for the next installment of the series, and I hope you feel the same after you read Darkland.
The world Laura created in Darkland is truly a work of art. I can only imagine the sunset sun reflecting off the crystal surfaces of Neverland. And even my vivid imagination can't probably recreate the heavenly scene. I know it's supposed to be "dark" and "scary," but if my prison looked similar to Darkland, would I really mind spending eternity there? Especially when there's a chance to meet Khaos? Count. Me. In. 🖐 I volunteer as Human Dust right now! 🤭
On a more serious note, reading about a character like Cassie is so liberating. Her chaos, her multifaceted personality, her questionable morality, and her humanity make you less ashamed of your own chaos and imperfections. This is a "flawed" FMC that's even more lovable because of her quirks, flaws, and imperfections, not in spite of them. It makes you feel like "if she can do it, so can I." Because, in reality, everyone has a bit of Cassie in them; everyone is capable of surving countless horrors and being their own hero.
I love Laura's creativity. This book is so unexpected. When you think you've figured things out, ups! There's a corner. And a plot twist just around it. I sometimes get bored when reading books with trials, as many of them are similar or have the same vibe. However, this was definitely not the case here. Every trial has been so well thought out and so out of the ordinary; with just the right amount of whimsical, eerie, and dangerous vibes.
You'll have to forgive me, but I can't shut up about how much I really really loved it that in the end, Cassie saved herself. So many of us wait all our lives for Prince Charming to come and save us, when in reality, we have all the power we need to escape our own manacles. We just need to remember it's there.
This book made me dream; it inspired me to look beyond appearances. Cause in Neverland, nothing is as it seems. I loved every minute I spent immersed in this world, every deadly game, every twist and turn, and every sweet moment with Cassie and Khaos. Ultimately, it is a story I'll keep thinking about long after I turned the last page. 🩵🩷💜
I can only count myself as one of the lucky ones to have had the chance of reading an ARC of this masterpiece. I will forever be grateful to you, Laura, for the opportunity to be part of your team! After reading your first book, The Crimson Snow, I knew that wherever you'll go, I'll follow. And whatever you'll write, I'll read. My little heart can't contain all the excitement of the next stories you'll bring into this world. But I'll be right here patiently (or very impatiently) waiting. 🙈🫶

Now I'll leave you with my favourite quote: 『Khaos laughed softly, pulling me closer, his breath brushing my ear. “I think you were wrong, Cassie. “Doubtful, I whispered, letting my head rest lightly against his shoulder. “Hear me out on this one, he murmured, his voice dipping into something almost tender. “You were incredibly, irrevocably wrong. Purely and obsessively— “I get it, Khaos, I sighed, fighting the urge to smile wider. “Go ahead. Enlighten me. Tell me why I was so wrong. “When you said this palace was the most beautiful thing you’ve seen so far. His voice dropped to a whisper, his lips close enough to brush my ear. “It’s because you haven’t seen yourself smile yet.” Swoonworthy indeed, this Khaos, isn't he? 🫠
This is a completely new author to me, and after reading that whirlwind of an adventure, I'm sat here praying that she has a massive backlog of other books for me to read because - just wow - Laura's imagination is amazing!
It's rare to find an author that both has the creative ability to create such an amazing unique world, and has the writing ability to pull it off - but Laura definately has skills in both areas!
So let's start with the world building;
We are immediately chucked straight into a new fantasy world where humans and God/esses co-exist with humans being the underdogs "human dust". The Gods feed off of the human souls in order to survive, and the world is split into three distinct areas, one of which is where most of the plot focusses - the Darklands. The Darklands is where humans go when they've done wrong, and are being punished through a set of trials. Deadly trial trope is my favourite , so I've read a lot of them, and have come to expect some overlap, so to my pleasant surprise, I was so happy to find out that these trials were completely different to any previous read! I loved the fairytale circus-esq theme of them, and I'll say no more lest spoilers!
Characters - Cassie and Khaos - our two main characters. Well. As someone of the pansexual orientation, I'm happy with either a "book-boyfriend" or "book-girlfriend"! - rare am I torn between two characters in one novel! But both these characters are just perfection - Cassie is a no-nonsense woman, who speaks before she thinks - which can be annoying in some characters when it puts them in danger, but as she understands it's her own flaw and mentions that, it didn't put me off her. She's strong, funny, witty, and has morals in difficult situations.. I'm nothing if not putty for strong woman! And Khaos is the sweet to her strength, but with that mischievous air that shows he can give as good as she gives. Are they love interests? You'll have to read to find out!
Plot -
The plot moves fast, although I did initially find it confusing that it was split across two timeframes. The reasoning for this becomes apparent later on in the story, and it really does add a completely new layer to the plot, so if like me, you struggle with multiple timelines - hold in there, you do get into the flow of it! And the ending has me squealing for more! I can't believe the amount of surprises at the very end - I read a lot so normally I'm not taken by surprise!
This was an easy 5 star rating, and I'm not surprised that the other reviews reflect this!
My second journey into Laura Vega’s writing, and let me just say... I am hooked!
'Darkland' is an absolute whirlwind of wonder and madness, like taking a tumble through the rabbit hole, but with sharper edges and more secrets. Vega has this ability to craft realms that feel both breathtakingly surreal and immersive. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Labyrinth with a dash of The Princess Bride, yeah, it’s that good.
The story follows Cassie, our FMC, who begins enslaved in the land of the gods. But fate has other plans, and soon she’s thrust into a deadly game where memories and freedom are at stake. Facing off against other human dust trapped in this twisted realm, Cassie’s determination is impossible not to root for. And then there’s Khaos, our enigmatic MMC. As his name suggests, he’s a delicious embodiment of mischief and charm, commanding the games with a presence that’s impossible to ignore. Their chemistry? Electric. Their dynamic? Unpredictable. Watching their story unravel was one of my favorite parts.
While I adored Cassie and Khaos, I did find myself yearning for more from some of the secondary characters. They had so much potential, and I couldn’t help but wish they had a bit more time to shine. That said, it’s a minor gripe in an otherwise fantastic narrative.
The pacing was spot on, keeping me immersed from the start. The blend of present-day action, character interactions, and well-placed flashbacks created a seamless flow. And don’t get me started on the world-building. What seems like a simple carnival transforms into a living, breathing entity with layers upon layers of eerie beauty. Every creature, every bit of lore, every twist added so much depth.
Laura Vega has once again proven herself to be a master of modern-day fairytales. Her imagination knows no bounds, and I cannot recommend Darkland enough. If you’re craving a dark, whimsical adventure filled with magic, danger, and a touch of chaos, this one’s for you. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
“Darkland" by Laura Vega is an absolute must-read, plunging readers into an unforgettable journey through the shadows of her enthralling fantasy world. This is a dark and daring tale, not for the faint-hearted, but one that mesmerises and compels, wrapping you in its haunting embrace. Vega's world-building is nothing short of extraordinary. From the ominous Obsidian Castle and the eerie Haunted House to the menacing fairground, deceptive mirrors, crystal rooms, and living crystal creatures, every setting is richly imagined and utterly captivating. The Fairground, in particular, is a masterpiece a foreboding, perilous arena for the trials that pulses with danger at every turn. Her descriptions are so vivid that you're left spellbound, questioning reality, as nothing is quite what it seems. One of the novel's most fascinating aspects is Vega's intricate exploration of memories lost, recovered, and redefined. This theme is pivotal to understanding Cassie, offering profound insights into her true identity. The characters, too, are masterfully crafted. Khaos is as chaotic as his name suggests- a character full of contradictions who draws you in with his charm and mystery, only to reveal a darker, more untrustworthy side. Who is the real Khaos? This question lingers, keeping readers on edge. The relationship between Cassie and Khaos is deliciously complex. Even amidst the layers of deception-such as Khaos's awareness of Cassie's true identity-it's impossible not to revel in their dynamic. Despite his flaws, Khaos remains irresistibly captivating. Finally, Laura Vega sets the stage perfectly for a sequel and it *has to happen. Cassie's thirst for revenge leaves readers eager to join her on the next thrilling chapter of her journey. "Darkland" is an unmissable adventure, and l, for one, can't wait to see where Vega takes us next!
Darkland by the wonderful Laura Vega is such a wonderful, dark and twisted ride!
× Always pay respect. × Enjoy the ride!
It's a blend of Alice in Wonderland, Hunger Games and some of the best fairytales in the best of ways and while some things were a bit easy to guess there also several twists I didn't see coming.
Cassie is unhinged, secretive and stabby in an amazing way and I loved where her story was going. Still, the spotlight goes - unsurprisingly - to Khaos, the Clown and Ringmaster of Darkland. Laura has written a charmingly annoying, protective, funny and also cunning character who plays his own game while guiding the participants of the trials and tricking not only Gods but also Cassie.
And then there's Morvax. The dark King with his unnerving eyes and most of his backstory not yet revealed. I feel a tragedy coming, going with that ending and what was revealed in the Bonus chapters. AND going with that, I always know what's up with characters I like the most...
Another thing I enjoyed immensely are the different rides, who are so similar to real life rides in fairgrounds or amusement parks, yet always come with a lethal twist in Darkland. My favorite probably was the Reaper's Wheel.
Honorable mention: Crysmoria, you dark soul, how I adore thee. I hope to see you again and learn more about you.
Laura Vega, thank you again for another amazing story with unforgettable characters and the best twisted rides! The mirror maze, the Obsidian Fortress - that scene in the bathtub 🔥
I cannot wait for the next book after those endings!
Also, my new favorite quote after finishing Darkland: "Twisted minds stick together." Lady Laura, I need Morvax' story. Please.
“Use me, destroy me, save me, free me, mock me—do with me whatever you want. But never let yourself believe you’re anything less than magical.
Let's get one thing straight: I will n to be taking criticisms of this book. I absolutely DEVOURED this book! The amount of space it takes up in my head is concerning lol Darkland was a cross of Lightlark, Alice in Wonderland, and Laura Vega's unique style. This book was amazing! There are no words for how much I love this book! The cover is stunning, the art is gorgeous and the interior formatting is beautiful. I cannot want to buy all the incredible editions of this book to have on my shelves and annotate the brilliant quotes. Cassie and Khaos were perfection! Cassie was unhinged in the best way, giving Harley Quinn vibes. Khaos was chaos haha Their chemistry was utterly perfect and had me giggling at their banter and t he tension. I loved the trials, the riddles, the mystery, and the world building. I really enjoyed diving into the world of Everland and Darkland with the different Gods and magic in the story. Laura's writing is beautiful and of course, she is an auto buy author. The way she formatted the book was so cool! I like how it was broken into three parts that had a little poem in the beginning, and there was the current timeline as well as Cassie's memories. They were seamlessly blended together. That ending tho?!?! OMG when is book two coming?? 😭😭😭 I could rave about this book forever, but I'll end my rambling here. GO READ THIS AMAZING BOOK!
Thank you Laura Vega for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Laura does it again. An amazing story told through poetic imagery. She has you fall in love with the characters. I hated Khaos, then I loved him, then I hated him again. I didn’t know how to feel by the end. I need book two now. I need to know what happens next. The book gives Alice in Wonderland vibes with Hunger Games trials. Enemies to lovers, which is my favorite trope. If you love riddles, this book is full of them, and I couldn’t figure the answers myself, Our fmc, Cassie hates riddles but she has to solve them to continue on the journey. Favorite quotes: “I can assure you Cassie, boredom is the last thing I bring to the table. “Actually, you’re the most unexpected plot twist in my life, Cassie. One I’d relive over and over. "Use me, destroy me, save me, free me, mock medo with me whatever you want. But never let yourself believe you're anything less than magical. You saved me from boredom, and I'll follow you until you get what you want."
What an absolute ride this story was! It was so cleverly written, the riddles were on point. Cassie, the FMC is clearly jaded by the world at large and her place in it. Her cynicisms, though, just hide her soft heart. And Khaos is completely swoon worthy. I loved the nonlinear timeline as well. It really added to the experience of the world and the characters not to mention depth to the plot. I cannot wait to read the next book.
Highlights: ✨Deadly Trials ✨Forced Proximity ✨Strong and Jaded FMC ✨Mind Games - Trust No One ✨Gods x Humans
Favorite Quotes: “Use me, destroy me, save me, free me, mock me—do with me whatever you want. But never let yourself believe you’re anything less than magical.
“This is not the fate promised to you, and yet you endured it. You ended up loving the sharp and dark edges of life—the chaos of it. Don’t be afraid of your memories. Let them drown you, but try not to drown them. Let them hurt you, but don’t allow them to cage you.
Thank you to the author for this advanced copy. My opinions are my own.
Laura Vega has such a great mind for fantastical settings featuring Gods and long lost maidens.
The dark fantasy aspects in this story were great but definitely on the softer side of the genre. There isn’t graphic detail but quite a lot of deathly situations.
Cassie is the embodiment of feminine rage and I wish she held grudges a little longer because she’s been crossed and manipulated so many times she could definitely have been worse.
I enjoyed this one a lot but it felt very similar to The Crimson Snow to the point I was making parallels between them constantly.
I think WHO Cassie is was quite obvious pretty early on so I wish that was a bigger reveal at the end of it. But overall this was an enjoyable fast paced story.
Thank you to Laura Vega for the ARC of this book. This is my honest opinion.
Whimsical, yet dark, this book is full of magic. Laura Vega's writing style is once again impeccable. I guarantee you have never read a story like this one. The creativity poured into Darkland is very evident. From the dark carnival setting to the different types of Gods, Alice in Wonderland vibes, and lots of riddles, this book will keep you guessing. A stabby FMC has to be my favorite and Cassie is definitely that. The characters are a little crazy, in the most interesting of ways. And of course, Laura leaves us with the cliffhangers yet again! 🤣❤️ It just makes me that more excited for the next book though. Thank you so much Laura for letting me be a part of your Street team! The experience has been absolutely magical. ✨️ She has put her heart and soul into your books and it clearly shows.
Where do I start? This book was phenomenal. I enjoyed every single second of reading it and getting to know Cassie and Khaos. I’m not much of a riddle person but the way Laura uses them in Darkland was so enjoyable.
At first I wasn’t sure if this writing style was one for me but the farther I read the more it grew on me and I started looking forward to the flashbacks.
Cassie is so determined even though she doesn’t know why. I love a strong FMC that doesn’t ask questions, they just do what they think is right every time.
Laura Vega always manages to capture such unique, whimsical vibes in her writing! The imagery of this book was so vivid and I felt transported to Darkland. It gives Alice in Wonderland meets like darker Caraval vibes with trials! I binged it in like a day as it is so fast paced with riddles and twists and turns and overall just such a mesmerizing and immersive journey! Cassie, the FMC, is strong, witty and such an interesting character to follow. Along the way you meet some other characters (Khaos •) that I won't spoil but will have you on a rollercoaster of emotions. the ending for sure left me so ready for more and I can't wait!
Oh my gosh. The way Laura Vega has me falling in love with Clown-shaped God-dirt and some human dust with different eyes and a heart-shaped beauty mark.
This dual-timeline book is so different from so many other romantasies that I’ve read and I am here for it in every single way. There are so many levels of humans, gods, and trickery that I wasn’t ready for every twist and turn! I still have SO MANY questions about the other characters that we met, but didn’t spend too much time with.
Sounds like we’ll need Book 2 sooner rather than later because the way this book ended??? It made me regret reading this as a BETA reader and ARC reader because it just means that I’ll have to wait even longer for Book 2...
Thank you Laura for a copy of this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
