This is a stellar pagan-adjacent book for kids. It's beautiful, gentle, accessible, and informative. A fantastic starting place for kids (and grown-ups!) curious about nature spirituality throughout the year.
I think the marketing of this book could have been done a little better to indicate that the book was really meant for children, but with that audience in mind it's quite effective. The reflections are sweet and thoughtful, and there were some quite informative bits about religions around the world. I appreciate that it's considerate of the world as a whole rather than focusing just on pagan traditions. The illustrations were sweet too. Overall, a fun little read but not immediately obvious that it's for children.
Some quotes: "Just because something can be explained by science doesn’t mean it’s not also magical." "Hope keeps us moving in the direction of light, life, and longer days." "Every culture has its own traditions and rituals, and sometimes as we explore others practices, we might want to try them ourselves. It’s important to approach this as if you are a guest in someone’s home." "Death is not the absence of life; it’s the next turning of the Wheel."
Completely dreamy. Physically, this is a beautiful book with lovely illustrations—I highly recommend reading a hard copy. Geared towards children, but I was inspired by the simple and approachable way the concepts and values of the Pagan holidays were explored. A wonderful primer for anyone interested in connecting with nature in a more structured, ritualistic way.
I didn't realize it was for kids when I purchased it - but honestly? Who cares! The illustrations are beautiful, I learned a lot, and I felt good reading it. Love having it out on display.
This book is a kind and gentle and sweet primer into magical and spiritual practices tied to the seasons and the pagan calendar. Ostensibly written for children, I found a lot of fun crafts and projects and ideas to bring into my own life.
I failed to realize that this was more for kids. It was okay; there were some interesting bits of information, but I personally didn't get much apart from that from the book.
I would only recommend this to kids interested in learning about witchcraft and the origins of some of the traditions.
I also did not know this book was intended for children, but I'm glad it is. I wish I had this book as a child, but I found it very healing to read. I am trying to distance myself from organized religion and find my own sort of holidays in a Christian centric calendar. This book was a beautifully illustrated way to keep time in a non commercialized way. Highly recommend!
I hadn't realised this book was aimed at children so I was a little disappointed at how simplistic the content was. However, it is beautifully illustrated and very charming, inclusive and approachable. Great for beginners
An absolutely beautiful book about the changing of the seasons!
Not only is this book constructed in such a lovely way (the thickness of the pages and the rich colors are amazing!), but the content itself is fantastic. I love how the book is set up by the natural rhythms of the year—spring and fall equinox, winter and summer solstices, etc.
The illustrations are breathtaking, but also have a cozy look with deep sensitivity (if that makes any sense). Although the writing is geared towards children, I still enjoyed reading every section. There's a sense of magic, awe and inspiration included in every season.
What's included in the book: history, recipes, crafts, observations, animals, sounds, activities and more. I wish I had this book in our home library when my children were young. There's so much to love about it!
Now that I've devoured this book from the library, I need to buy my own copy to keep. I adore seasonal books and this one will be an excellent (and joyful!) addition to my book collection. Highly recommended!
I read this in companionship with Wild Wisdom Companion and it was all so beautiful and amazing. What I really like about this one is that it breaks up the year in all of its seasons, including the solstices, equinox’s, and the seasonal changes in between. It’s been an interesting journey for me working on trying to be more in tune with nature and the changes that happen during the year and the seasons. In our modern age, we’ve forgotten that our primal ancestors relied on nature for their survival, and trying to reach back into those roots has been a beautiful experience. This is a book that I will also keep reading year after year and it’s one I also recommend for any who have a piquing curiosity about how we can reconnect with nature.
OBSESSED with this one. It's a kid's book, but besides a few fire safety and cooking warnings, it could totally be for adults. So many good social justice and environmentalism points in here, too. Most of all, the artwork is STUNNING. Beautiful message of magic being in you and in nature, which is also you! I'm probably going to buy a copy of this one to display in my apartment but also to refer back to throughout the year.
Light read filled with beautiful pictures and family friendly activities based on the Wheel of the Year. The author doesn't push any particular path and discusses nature's rhythm from a very objective point of view while acknowledging all of the different ways one may celebrate. Even a great read for adults!
Hallmark ain't got nuttin' on this. Seriously, I love learning about, and even better actually celebrating holidays from other cultures. The lunar celebrations of the fall Chinese and Hebrew calendars particularly hit me every year, far more than the solar new year. Add in the foraging elements and some hands-on-science projects (with appropriate instructions and reminders to make use of the appropriate grown-ups for certain parts of the process) and this translates beautifully for families and school classes.
This book is absolutely wonderful. I am a practicing pagan and got this book for my daughter to help her become more in tune with nature. The way everything is explained in this book is absolutely perfect for getting children involved in nature-based spirituality without specific dogmatism. The activities in it are so wonderful, and my daughter and I have had so much fun following along with the book throughout the year!
A nice introduction to the wheel of the year. I enjoyed the ideas within, the beautiful illustrations, and especially the factoids in each section. I definitely recommend this if you’d like a beautiful book on the topic. I didn’t realize this was a book for young readers not a big deal, but occasionally distracting to read “with the help of your adult.. 😂
First off, can we all just agree how GORGEOUS this book is? These illustrations are amazingly warm and make this work so much more approachable for children. Believe it or not, it is aimed at Youth!
This lovely book goes Sabbat by Sabbat through the Wheel of the Year. We start with Ostara and move through to end with Imbolc - beginning with the Spring Equinox. There are other mentions of rituals, festivals, other religions etc along with the Pagan holiday. There are recipes, crafts, ritual ideas, correspondence, fun ideas - I love the Scavenger Hunt feature, which gives ideas of how to notice the Earth's changes, allowing us to dive into the world itself, instead of just reading about the changes coming up
The writing is easy to understand and approachable. It is aimed for children, but adults can gain quite a bit of good information from this book as well. This is a fantastic book for families who Pagan Parent, for those who are looking for some solid information or those who need a refresher on the basics and would like this whimsical book to re-spark the magick of the WotY.
While reading I had that very inspiration, holidays that were feeling a little stale had a burst of inspiration and I am excited to try the ideas out in my next celebrations. Nothing is too difficult, requires intense supplies, or is too outlandish. Everything is accessible and allows your personal traditions and thoughts to be merged with the information here.
Overall I am very excited to add this title to my personal collection - this review is being written after checking out a copy from my local library.
I encourage everyone who is a Pagan and follows the Wheel of the Year to pick this up - whether you have children or not! 5 out of 5 Triquetras!
Llevaba tiempo buscando un libro enfocado a las festividades del calendario pagano, pero ninguno acababa de convencerme. Hasta que un día me encontré con este precioso libro ilustrado, The Wheel of the Year.
This is a gorgeous, gentle introduction for older kids (and perhaps, more likely, their teachers and guides and parents) on how to follow the rhythm of the year so as to be more in tune with nature, ourselves and the creatures around us. The year is divided first by solstices and equinoxes. (4 a year) and then further divided again into 4 more "cross quarter" days. All these special days have been celebrated the world over -- the author does a great job of including examples from across the world -- as the marker of seasonal change. This book shares each of these 8 holidays and gives a nature scavenger hunt, an altar project, a ritual bath plus loads of seasonal projects for each holiday with lots of fun background information. The references to magic throughout are aiming mostly to celebrate our primal need for connection to nature and its processes and surprises.
I have to say, as an Episcopal Christian, yearning to help my fellow believers connect with God's earth and with the practice of Creation Care, I look at the wheel of the year as an indispensible support. I plan cross quarter day celebrations for my church to gently introduce seasonal change as a new (really old) way to look for and honor God.
I would recommend this book to every preschool teacher, Waldorf teachers, Sunday school leaders, and every parent. Modern life has robbed us of one our birthrights -- the chance to connect with the mystery and joy of the world around us. Let us begin!
Oh, this is a comprehensive book for young readers who want to get in synch with the rhythms of the earth. It starts with spring and goes through the whole year until pre-spring. It introduces a lot of specialized vocabulary words (there is a glossary) about nature, about the study of nature from the point of view of folklore, pre-Christian religions (pagan is a pejorative term). It inserts holidays from various cultures that are tied to the lunar / solar calendar.
The book also includes a lot of activities young readers (and the grown ups in their lives) can do to connect with nature, the seasons, and the connection between the spiritual / intuitive side of being human as connected with nature.
My fear is that many adults will think this book is dangerous because of its connection to pre-Christian spirituality / religions. I think it's a great idea for people to respect nature and learn from the natural world in an intuitive, spiritual way. But if this were in my public library in central, rural Utah, I know many women personally who would not let their kids check this out and they may even challenge it (ask for it to be banned). But we should carry it anyway to allow readers to understand that globally now as well as across time many people connect with the earth in emotional, spiritual, and religious ways.
This book is EXCEPTIONAL. It is beautiful, thoughtfully crafted, inclusive, and inviting. I originally bought it because my family uses the Celtic calendar to guide our seasonal celebrations throughout the year, but it is a treasure trove filled with clever crafts, interesting and approachable science (esp. astrology and biology), cultural exploration from around the world, and more-- all woven with a sense of deep responsibility and wisdom. A prime example of this is the very first section of the book, "Let's Be Safe!" where the authors discuss the joy and importance of exploration, but also the caution necessary to be careful, the discipline needed to sustain concentration, and above all, the importance of wisdom and humility in exploration-- including knowing when to ask for help! I would not necessarily describe this as a "kids' book"; more a book that intentionally includes kids in its audience but whose message is as relevant for me as it is for my six-year-old who loves it as much as I do. I think it is partly the incredibly beautiful illustrations throughout the book that captivate audiences of all ages. They almost sweep you through the text on a gust of the captivating magic that is this synthesis of ancient wisdom, an exploration of the deep roots of a variety of cultural practices, magic, science, science-magic, and mindfulness, hands-on exploration of the world around us.
An nice introduction to the Wheel of the Year, its different spokes, and holidays and activities associated with each. While this is aimed at children, the book also works for adults looking for ways to connect to nature and discover their own inner magic.
Each section includes an overview of the season, past and present holidays that coincide with the season from around the world, a scavenger hunt, altar ideas, rituals, and related recipes, crafts, and other activities. Some of these include making your own amulets, building henges, drying herbs, making flower crowns, and practicing candle magic.
At the start, readers are instructed on how to make an altar and given tips for starting a journal. Throughout the rest of the book, ideas are given on how to add to these during each of the seasons.
The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. Soft and textured.
Well-written with a great variety of tasks.
A great book to reference all year. Nice way to connect to nature and spirituality, and promote personal growth and reflection.
