Sophie Rostopchine, Countess of S茅gur, born Sofiya Feodorovna Rostopchina (1 August 1799 in Saint Petersburg 鈥 8 February 1874 in Paris), was a French writer of Russian birth and origin. She is best known today for her novel Les Malheurs de Sophie (Sophie's misfortunes), intended for children.
Cadichon is a lively and intelligent donkey who wants his readers to know that although he was naughty in his youth and was punished severely, he is now reformed.
His main aim is to refute the stereotypical image of donkeys as ignorant and stubborn and reveal, through his stories, the true, gentle and wise nature of donkeys.
Cadichon's antics are guaranteed to make you laugh! Cadichon can also be vengeful when overworked and underfed.
His retaliations and plans for revenge will have readers shaking their heads in disapproval but ultimately, as Cadichon encounters love and acceptance through his adventures, we come to admire his bravery and loyalty.
This is a French classic by the author of the Fleurville Trilogy, an endearing story about the adventures of a mischievous donkey, Monsieur Cadichon. It is delightfully old fashioned in its style of language, the absence of OH&S, and the indulgence in name-calling, but is also a very rich character story about a self-reflective donkey who learns to see the error of his ways. It could be read aloud to younger children or read by older ones, there鈥檚 plenty to entertain and give them food for thought.
Have you ever thought what it鈥檚 like to be a donkey? Cadichon is a donkey that has been through a lot of hardships, and tragedies. He is a very wise donkey, but is very naughty at his youth. Jacques and his little friends were very fond of him, and thought that he is very trustworthy. One day, when Auguste was hunting, he accidently shot Medor, his only, and loyal hound friend. After Medor鈥檚 death, Cadichon played nasty tricks on him, but one of the nastiest tricks is that he flung Auguste into a wastewater pond on a hot summer鈥檚 day. Later Auguste fell very ill, and no one was fond of Cadichon anymore. Now, he鈥檒l have to get rid of his nasty behavior, and hatred to gain back his trust. I loved this book because it simply is very funny, and entertaining. Those tricks he did to his first master was hilarious. 鈥淔inally, having hurled the most insulting abuse at me, to which I responded by simply licking my lips and turning my back, she grabbed for her stick and started to beat me so cruelly that I finally lost my patience and gave her three good kicks. The first managed to break her nose and two teeth, the second broke her wrist, and the third caught her in the stomach and threw her to the ground.鈥 Another entertaining trick he had was that he slid a frog into Auguste鈥檚 pants which made him scream. You could both see the effect of a mean trick without getting into trouble. Overall, I rate this book 5 stars.
