Jung proposed and developed the concepts of extraversion and introversion; archetypes, and the collective unconscious. His work has been influential in psychiatry and in the study of religion, philosophy, archeology, anthropology, literature, and related fields. He was a prolific writer, many of whose works were not published until after his death.
The central concept of analytical psychology is individuation鈥攖he psychological process of integrating the opposites, including the conscious with the unconscious, while still maintaining their relative autonomy. Jung considered individuation to be the central process of human development.
Jung created some of the best known psychological concepts, including the archetype, the collective unconscious, the complex, and synchronicity. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a popular psychometric instrument, has been developed from Jung's theory of psychological types.
Though he was a practising clinician and considered himself to be a scientist, much of his life's work was spent exploring tangential areas such as Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, and sociology, as well as literature and the arts. Jung's interest in philosophy and the occult led many to view him as a mystic, although his ambition was to be seen as a man of science. His influence on popular psychology, the "psychologization of religion", spirituality and the New Age movement has been immense.

There is some fascinating and brilliant insights into the relationship between psychology and the EXAMINATION of what a work of art may or may not mean. He comments that a work of art is in and of itself, as unexplainable and as mysterious as Life itself.
One of the funniest things I've read in a long time is his examination of James Joyce's . I think it was after a nap 鈥� he fell asleep while struggling through the book 鈥� he found great relief with the realization that the book could be read just as well backwards as forwards. Which he proceeded to do, and found that that was indeed the case. He expressed great admiration for the skill it took to write this book.
And from "Ulysses": A Monologue, he makes an important observation of society 80 years ago that has become even more 'true' today:
I started reading this a while ago, but only as a small essay filler book that I use to fill short reading opportunities. Alas, the ideas and the synchronicities were so rich that I've now all but finished it ahead of the other books I've already started.
This is a powerfully reflective book.

Atrophy of feeling is characteristic of modern man and always shows itself as a reaction when there is too much feeling around, and in particular too much false feeling. In our recent history we are inundated with over-the-top sentimentalized 'news events' while our world leaders heartlessly continue economic and military wars that kill millions. Collectively, individually and in our schools and media, we tacitly support this heartless killing through our ignorance and/or inaction, and at the same time put into power people like Trump in no small part because of the over sentimentalized sell of his 'making America great again.'

I can't possibly review the deep meanings of the first part of this book, which I'll probably have to read again. but I'll do say that I was interested on what Jung said about art in general and specific artists.
the chapter about Ulysses is probably one of the greatest book reviews ever written, not with a lack of humor. yet I didn't find his thoughts about Picasso so much in the right direction. honestly, I thought perhaps his negative interpretation of Picasso somewhat shows that Jung, with all his glory, is a man of his generation, and maybe missed or didn't fit (or wasn't fond of) the message of modern art. by all means, it doesn't mean that what he said is wrong. it's understandable considering Jung's views about how modern art shows the state of modern man, which is poor, yet I wonder if he'd live these days what would he make of it looking back.

Despite the lofty title, this book has a lot of really fun bits and if Jung could ever be considered 'quirky' this is it. It includes two essays where he managed to piss off two of the greatest artists of his time- James Joyce's Ulysses he calls boring and irritating at the same time and he calls Picasso, a schizophrenic (in a nice way)

August 1, 2011the book is very dense in its language, its basically a series of essays by jung about art and creativity. its at times very hard to understand, i had to read it certain paragraphs again to get a better grasp of what he is trying to say. i particurlarly likes his analysis of frued its probably the best part of the book. its very objective and well written, puts his arguments against freudism very succintly which has been confirmed by other experts later than 1930s when he wrote it, so he was a head of his time. its well worth a read if your into art,literature and psychology.

There it is, that word, right there is the middle of his title, Man; not only is it in the fourth position, at least for the English translation of a collections of articles published after Jung died, but also happens to be his favourite, most mystical number. Mine, by the way, are three and seven, so I got to ponder of and Literature while reading this short but idea-filled book. It would probably not have raised too many eyebrows when first published in 1966, but of course the singular focus on der Mann became a contentious point academically and now throughout popular culture. And yet the several authors, artists and innovators Jung studies in his writing reveal that sense of wonder spoken of ironically by Hamlet: 鈥淲hat a piece of work is a man鈥︹€�, just some that are more apprehensive angels than others. Freud, for instance, draws the shortest straw in praise, often having his previously dutiful successor Jung take several stabs at his lifeless body, pointing out how ill-read is once-upon-a-time mentor was when it came to philosophy and the arts. Though not written about overtly, it seems like Nietzsche and Goethe are an essential part of being der Mann, and add to this list Paracelsus, Wilhelm and maybe even Melville. Joyce and Picasso are curious asterisks to the Zeitgeist of depth psychology, maybe not entirely required for Menschood, but it wouldn鈥檛 hurt to read or view their work as a window into the unconscious, another royal road to the soul.

Zijn onverbloemde, messcherpe kritiek op zijn mentor Freud, en zijn lezing van Ulysse van James Joyce, zijn absolute hoogtepunten. Een 'must read' voor allen die zich willen verdiepen in de overlap tussen kunst en psychologie.

I am almost finished reading through Carl Jung. His writings have changed me but at the same time, he has shown the worthless nature of my modern theological education. By reading Jung, I am ahead and better than all these theologians and their ph.ds from modern anti-Jungian materialistic institutions.

Hace muchos a帽os que quer铆a a comenzar a leer los libros de Jung que la Flaca comenz贸 a leer hace como 30 a帽os! Hasta ahora encontr茅 las ganas de hacerlo y ha sido un gusto enorme comenzar por este libro en que se relacionan esp铆ritu, arte y literatura.
Me gust贸 mucho la estructura del texto que ayuda a elaborar el contenido. Primero Jung junta art铆culos que ha trabajado sobre Paracelso (el m茅dico que es capaz de ligar la salud del cuerpo con los astros y con la filosof铆a), Sigmund Freud (con quien trabaj贸) y Richard Whilhelm (quien trae el I Ching a occidente). Luego dedica un cap铆tulo a la relaci贸n entre Psicolog铆a Anal铆tica y Poes铆a, entre Psicolog铆a y Literatura. Cierra el texto analizando el Ulises (de Joyce) y Picasso.
Encontr茅 como limitante enorme el que salvo algunas excepciones peque帽itas, yo no he le铆do ninguno de los autores o los temas mencionados. El libro es una buena invitaci贸n a trabajar estos y otros autores que aparecen rese帽ados tales como Dante (y la Divina Comedia), Nietzsche, Goethe (y el Fausto). Llama a leer Ulises y a mirar de una manera diferente a Picasso y a otros pintores.
Me gust贸 c贸mo mira la relaci贸n del m茅dico Paracelso con el conocimiento especial que debe tener y con su proximidad con la "luz de la naturaleza". Nacido en 1493, fue capaz de ligar a los m茅dicos cl谩sicos con diversas fuentes de conocimiento emp铆rico y la relaci贸n con diversos campos y con la Alquimia (entendida como procedimiento filos贸fico). Liga la salud con la astrolog铆a y la astronom铆a. Sus contempor谩neos lo consideraron el Lutero de la medicina, una de las figuras importantes del Renacimiento.
En el cap铆tulo sobre Freud, Jung lanza abiertamente sus cr铆ticas a los m茅todos de Freud. Pero tambi茅n nos llama la atenci贸n sobre la importancia de ubicar a Freud en su contexto hist贸rico espec铆fico del materialismo cient铆fico del siglo XIX: "It is an instrument to be used by a doctor, and it is dangerous or destructive, or at best ineffective, when applied to the natural expressions of life and its needs". 47
Uno de los cap铆tulos que m谩s me gust贸 es el dedicado a la memoria de Richard Wilhelm. Yo ten铆a referencias de 茅l, pero no lo ligaba con tanta fuerza al I Ching, a la China y a la ciencia desarrollada en 茅se pa铆s desde hace miles de a帽os. Es un autor para trabajar bien y con juicio:
"... it is Wilhelm who brings new light from the East. This was the cultural task to which he felt himself called, recognizing how much the East had to offer in our spiritual need". 58
"The spirit of Europe is not helped merely by new sensations or a titillation of the nerves. What it has taken China thousands of years to build cannot be acquired by theft". 58
"Nothing can be sacrificed for ever. Everything returns later in changed form, and when once a great sacrifice has been made, the sacrificed thing when it returns must meet with a healthy and resistant body that can take the shock". 62

Uno de los que m谩s me gust贸 es la relaci贸n que tiene la creaci贸n art铆stica con los arquetipos y con la memoria/inconsciente colectivo. Es el aspecto supra-personal. C贸mo entender el aspecto supra-personal nuestro, latinoamericano, colombiano? The plant is no a mere product of the soil; it is a living, self-contained process which in essence has nothing to do with the character of the soil.

Full of interesting observations and insights. The essay on Psychology and Literature is essential background for those wanting to apply psychoanalysis to writing: the risks and benefits. For stimulating views of Joyce and Picasso I guess Jung was of his time, but I find his categorisation of Picasso as a schizoid personality (from his paintings) strikes a chord: "produces pictures which immediately reveal their alienation from feeling.... they communicate no immediate harmonious feeling-tone but, rather, contradictory feelings or even a complete lack of feeling." Not sure how much this says about Jung too, but I can go along with that.

Its a random assortment of stuff - kind of a "spare parts" modge podge anthology - but its mostly very interesting and very good - lower rating than most, because alot of it was rather obscure to me, but that with which I'd had previous experience was very interesting. I love how really cutting edge and ahead of his time (by about 50 years) Jung was.
