Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.
Ok, this isn't quite worth 4 stars but i rounded up because i'm grading on a curve, having read (and been disappointed by) a lot of short story collections lately.
Maupassant might be best known for the Horla but apart from that there isn't any other weird fiction or even much in the way of ghost story in this collection. They're just general tales usually but not always involving a death. The subtitle is 'Short Stories of the Tragedy and Comedy of Life', and is perfectly apt. Also very accurate is this from the goodreads author profile ' Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement.' .
Without any genre hook like supernatural or sc-fi i really expected this to be 2 stars, as in goodish but not worth recommending given how many other books there are in the world :P . However the tales grew on me whereas many other collections tended to get more boring over time.
A very nice general assortment of subjects and tones, slanting towards the tragic or the darkly comic.
Edit: There's a really moving rendition of 'Simon's Papa' on Librivox.

DAY 21: The Horla Being an ignoramus (see previous reviews on this bookshelf), I knew nothing about Maupassant, so I was excited to find myself unexpectedly reading a proto-weird masterpiece.
*The rules: Read one short story a day, every day for six weeks Read no more than one story by the same author within any 14-day period Deliberately include authors I wouldn't usually read Review each story in one sentence or less
Any fresh reading suggestions/recommendations will be gratefully received 📚
I picked it up for "The Horla", and i was a little disappointing in that story (it might deserve 3 stars, but it gets 2 because I was unhappy with it). Overall I really enjoyed his work.

At last got a tase of - Maupassant, the master story teller of the shorter version. Most of them are written in the backdrop of Franco- Prussian war. They captivate the readers with its detailing and the lucid prose which captures the travails of the ordinary people enduring the miseries heaped mostly by poverty, war or the circumstances.
I started this book a long time ago, put it aside, and then could not remember where I had stopped, so I reread it over several months. Most of the short stories take place during the Prussian war and occupation or in Paris. I like his writing and found the book entertaining.
I like Guy de Maupassant's short story writing. But my problem with short stories in general is because they are short the author can focus on the character or the story (plot) but does not have the space to do both. If I cannot relate to the main character, the story is rarely interesting. His plots are interesting, but the characters are not.
