Brian Michael Bendis

(This started as a scathing review for All New X-Men #1 ... then something happened...)
“What the hell is this?� I screamed at Marvel, waving All New X-Men in his face. I was angry. Obviously. Irrational. Maybe. But I didn’t care. I had had enough. “I gave you a chance with that AvX bullshit, but you let me down! I gave you a chance with Consequences, but someone stole Xavier’s brain before he was even cold in the ground! And now this? I’m supposed to accept that Hank has a pocket time turner and the little X-Men have no issue hopping into the future to play ‘This is Your Life?’�
Marvel crossed his arms and stared coldly at her. “You knew where this was going. You knew what it was!�
“Yes, I did, but I was stupid enough to believe that you’d FINALLY give me something that didn’t have any plot holes in it. Instead you give me a plot hole so damn big that I can jump through time!�
“How did you think I was going to get the original X-Men back here?�
“Well � � I stammered, but my brain was in no state to provide ideas that made any sense. I’d used them all up trying to posthumously fix the mess Marvel had made of AvX. “Anything would be better than a dying Hank and a bunch of kids who run off into the future without telling dad!�
Marvel flung exasperated arms into the air, “You just have to be patient! It doesn’t matter how we got to this point. What matters is what we do with it!�
“No, Marvel, no! I’m not buying that this time! I’m tired of it!� That’s when I started throwing everything (except Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men) at him. Civil War. Onslaught. House of M. Punctuating each haphazardly aimed throw with each of their failures. He blocked it as best as he could, before opting instead to tackle me, pinning me to the ground. I writhed angrily. We’ve been in this position before and by the roguish twinkle in Marvel’s eyes, I knew what he was thinking. But I wouldn’t let it happen. Not this time. I let the haze of anger melt away and stopped struggling. He took the bait and leaned down to kiss me. I bit him.
He yelped and loosened his grip and I used the opportunity to kick him off me and escape to the other side of the couch.
“I said: not this time. It’s over.�
Marvel wiped blood from his mouth with the back of his hand. I avoided his eyes. The shock and sadness in them was too much. It would break my resolve. I had to stick to my guns this time. I had to get out.
I � I can change,� Marvel pleaded.
“You have changed,� I said with remorse. “But not the way I needed you to. Do you remember when we used to cuddle up in bed with Classic X-Men? Do you remember the original Dark Phoenix Saga? Even Fall of the Mutants! Other people didn’t like that, but I did.� The tears were flowing now and I couldn’t stop them. “I loved it! And I loved you!�
“We can’t go back to the past.�
“And yet you always do. Regurgitating storylines and characters and killing them off only to bring them back again. How long until the sentinels show up AGAIN, Marvel? How long?? What happened to the man I knew with all those fantastic ideas? What happened to the man who understood the meaning of sacrifice? What happened to the man who didn’t find excuses to throw Wolverine at everything?�
“I � I’m still here,� he said, trying to approach me, but I moved further away. It was a small apartment. There was only so far I could go.
“No. You’re not the man I need anymore.�
I worded that poorly. I could feel the air change; the tension return. “There’s someone else. Isn’t there. For the love of Thor. Please tell me it’s not DC!�
“You don’t understand my needs anymore, Marvel. I � I’m � I didn’t want you find out from my Facebook relationship status update, so I guess it’s best I tell you now.�
“WHO IS IT??� he yelled, barely containing his rage.
“I’m � I’m seeing Image again.�
“You � you what??? You’re seeing the guy you cheated on me with before because he had shiny digital backgrounds and perky nipples and you think I’m going to be okay with this??�
“WE WERE ON A BREAK!� I yelled back at him and then we were back at each other’s throats. Yelling and screaming and throwing everything but punches until the inevitable angry sex happened.

“Why do you fight me?� he said, nuzzling my neck.
“Because I hate you and I want you to let me go,� I replied dreamily, tracing my fingers along his strong arms.
“I’m not holding you,� he said, releasing me from his grip as if to prove that were true, “You keep coming back to me.�
I shivered and he frowned with concern. “You’re cold,� he said, getting up. Here. I got this for you.� He handed me an oversized hoodie.
I gratefully pulled it over my head and looked down at the words emblazoned across my chest.
“Cyclops was right.�

This is shaping up to be a really great start in the post-Professor world for the X-men. Scott, WTF, bro? McCoy, one of my favourite characters, is looking to play a good role in this series.

I don't think I could have ever chosen a more perfect comic book series to read as I start the second wave of my X-Men comics diet this year than doing it with Brian Michael Bendis' All-New X-Men. First, let's begin this review with a context. I was an uber-geek fan of Jeff Parker's 2009-2011 PG-13 awesomeness that was X-Men: First Class which occupied me most of last May so I was really looking forward to seeing my Original Core Five (OCF, as I call them) in another title and this was why Bendis' current ongoing series hits my sweet spot just right.
I also can't believe I've truly spent six months going through X-Men classics and fan-favorites earlier this year, and now that I'm back after taking a side trip with Batman for July and Hellblazer for August, I'm going to start it by enjoying this September with this delightful title. I've read Bendis' work in House of M which was an impressive piece of fiction, if anything else. I already have confidence in him as an X-Men writer and for this series, he certainly delivered. Equipped by the fabulous and seriously faint-inducing eye-candy visual work by artist Stuart Immonen, All-New X-Men is essentially my paradise on earth.
The first debut issue opens with Hank McCoy's journal entry where he admits that he is once again going through the next stage of his beast mutation which is all kinds of hellish pain and he stresses that he may not survive this one at all. Contextually speaking, the events for this title is smacked in the aftermath of the 2012 crossover saga that was AVX: Avengers vs. the X-Men which generally became a pissing contest as the issues went on, but at the heart of it, it was a landmark story about the Phoenix Force being communally divided into four mutants (or what is it five? It's all a blur for me now) and the last two standing were Cyclops and Emma Frost. And then Cyclops took the Phoenix's power all to himself, murdered the fuck out of Charles Xavier, and psychologically and spiritually broke down completely as the power consumed him.
Fast-forward through all that: "mutant messiah" Hope became the new receptor of the Phoenix Force after Scott had a brief moment of clarity, and she started going around the world to fix all the awful things that the force itself committed on earth. But when it's time to let go of her newfound power, Hope outright refused until Scarlet Witch stepped in and convinced her. Together, they released the Phoenix into the cosmos where it dispersed and, suddenly, mutants all over the globe were getting born again after the shitty decimation that happened in the House of M storyline.
This is where All-New X-Men comes in play.
We were introduced to two new mutants: Eva, who can stop time, and Christopher, who can probably not just heal a person but raise it from the dead. Cyclops, Magneto, Emma Frost and Magik (Illyana) are a team now, apparently, and Scott invites this young mutants to join the "revolution". Meanwhile, Ororo, Bobby and Kitty watch the news coverage that track Cyclops and his gang's upsetting activities that have human casualties which Bobby argued goes against everything he remembered about the Scott Summers he grew up with who wanted a peaceful co-existence with mutants. Yes, the mighty Cyclops has fallen so far and Hank--who is afraid he is going to drop dead any second now as he mutates--decided to take the only course of action that he deemed fit, and it was all thanks to Bobby's harmless suggestion:
Hank, brilliant scientist who knows a thing or two about time-space continuum and how to travel through it, goes back during an idyllic time when there were only the five of the most hopeful and aspiring young mutants who are composed of the first class of the X-Men. He chose a rather timely moment when his younger self was just about to quit the team and walk out of the mansion for good. The moment he appeared before the young Henry, all blue giant fur, his more human counterpart recognized him instantly. Warren, Bobby, Jean and Scott were worried and tried to call for the Professor but Beast insisted that they all have to hear what he has to say and calling Xavier will prevent that. The Prof will most probably send back Hank to his own timeline and then mind-wipe his students (the dude is prone to solving problems like that). Still baffled, amazed and annoyed by this plot development, the OCF refused to listen to whatever incomprehensible insanity is happening in front of them until Beast dropped this worrisome truth-bomb about the future Scott Summers that definitely got their attention:
Yes, we are onto a great fucking start! The old-fashioned and quirky OCF of X-Men traveling to the future to encounter a darker vision of a life they have never anticipated? HOW CAN ANYONE NOT BE READING THIS?
RECOMMENDED: 9/10

This is a great comic, and really deserves 5 stars. But, the reason I can only give it 4 is because everything that happens in the issue was revealed in promotion and hype for the comic. The final page, the 'cliff-hanger', is the premise behind whole comic. That preview page you may have seen, were Beast meets the original 5 X-men and tells them they need to come to the future - that's how the comic ends.
But like I said, it is a great comic.
Bendis picks up right after Avengers vs X-men. He's said in many interviews that he likes dealing with the fallout from these big stories just as much as he likes writing the big stories. That's very apparent here. Sure, it doesn't make it too new reader friendly. But honestly, which X-men comic is? X-men is a universe in itself. There's a lot of characters, and each character has a lot of history. Which is great, and why the X-men are so popular. But it can make the comics a little off putting to new readers. However, I think All New X-men #1 is a good a jumping on point that's possible. The caption page fills you in with everything you need to know, and then BOOM. Into the story.
The artwork is quite frankly gorgeous. I've been a fan of Immonen since him and Bendis did the first New Avengers arc of The Heroic Age. With Von Grawbadger on ink and Gracia on inks, it's a good looking comic.
They'll be few better times to try out an X-men comic, may as well take the chance NOW!

It's Bendis. I dig Bendis. This, I'm told, is one of the screwier X-Men stories. On the plus side, it's not one of those weird amalgam teams, it's a traditional X-team. On the minus side, did I mention it's a screw-y story? It's like what happens when you mix an X-Men script with a Star Trek script? Maybe. Anyway, first issue is less jokey than I'm used to Bendis doing. So thumbs up there. Also Stuart Immonen's art is fantastic.

I have always loved the original 5 Xmen, Beast's genius coupled with Iceman's ridiculousness, Cyclop's stoicism, Angel's flight. Marvel Girl was always my favorite. Now they are back! With way better art work. And all I want is for Jean Grey to destroy Emma Frost. Pretty please...

Excelente comienzo de la saga All-New X-Men.
En un mundo sin Charles Xavier, los X-Men se han dividido en dos bandos, con dos filosofías diferentes sobre lo que significa ser mutante. Uno de esos bandos está liderado por Cíclope quien, junto a otros poderosos mutantes como Emma Frost, Magneto y Magik, lleva adelante una violenta revolución por la liberación definitiva. Por otro lado, el grupo compuesto por Bestia, Iceman, Tormenta y Kitty, con base en la Escuela Jean Grey para Estudios Superiores, se debate entre enfrentarse a Cíclope para detenerlo y los problemas que ocasionaría una guerra civil mutante. Al mismo tiempo, nuevos mutantes están apareciendo y descubriendo sus poderes, y son rápidamente reclutados por el bando de Cíclope.
Entonces Hank toma una decisión: viaja atrás en el tiempo, visita a los cinco Uncanny X-Men originales e intenta convencerlos de que regresen a su tiempo para ayudarlo a detener a Cíclope de cometer un genocidio.
Un detalle interesantísimo: la escena que el Bestia del futuro interrumpe, en la que Hank del pasado se queja de la ingratitud de los humanos e intenta renunciar a los X-Men, es una recreación (con mejores ilustraciones) de la misma escena que puede leerse en Uncanny X-Men (1963) #8, el clásico episodio en el que se enfrentan a Unus, el Intocable. Este me pareció un excelente detalle, recrear de forma completa una escena clásica de los números originales de Uncanny X-Men. Aquí les dejo las imágenes de ambos comics para que las comparen.

This will serve as my overall series review.
I feel like Bendis writes dialogue like Kevin Smith writes dialogue, minus the offensive language every other word. It's just entertaining. I could listen to a toaster and a microwave have a conversation about their day if Bendis was writing the narration.
I thought time traveling mutants from the past would grow tiresome, but it works surprisingly well. I long ago stopped nitpicking details in comics, and learned just to enjoy the story, and I feel like I'm a happier reader for it.
I think this book is probably the best of the relaunched X titles for a new reader. Uncanny and x-men feel like they're too steeped in what just happened in previous arcs to be friendly to new readers.
Also, the artwork is fantastic. Chris Bachalo is one of my favs, along with Humberto Ramos. If you like super colorful, vibrant page art, look no further. Sometimes I wish there was an option to turn off the text bubbles on comixology.

Bendis bersama Immonen, saya tidak akan melewatkannya. Setting cerita adalah pascatragedi nyaris musnahnya mutan di muka Bumi akibat Scarlett Witch dan, selanjutnya, pascamunculnya Phoenix yang menyebarkan lagi bibit-bibit mutan. Cyclops, yang menjadi buronan dengan tuduhan membunuh Profesor X, berkoalisi dengan Emma Frost dan Magneto untuk merekrut mutan-mutan baru. Usahanya itu mengakibatkan korban manusia tidak berdosa. Hal ini membuat sekolah Jean Grey School for Higher Learning berada dalam krisis. Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Storm, dan Beast yang ada di sekolah itu berada dalam dilema. Beast-lah kemudian yang mengambil langkah ekstrem: ia kembali ke masa lalu dan mengajak para X-Men orisinil untuk ke masa depan, dengan tujuan membuka perundingan antara Scott Summers muda dengan Scott Summers dewasa.

I've tried a couple of times to get into the x-men comics. I love the movies, but I always found the immense history of the series too daunting to tackle. I read that All-New X-Men is a great jumping on place so I gave it a try. If you're familiar with the main players (Wolverine, Professor X, Beast, Cyclops, Jean Grey, etc) then this really does make a great place to start. Having come to this with know prior knowledge of what proceeds it, the blurb at the beginning really helps. Basically, the Phoenix Force entered Scott (Cyclops) and he wound up killing Professor X. Now he's on the run and has teamed up with some former bad guys (including Magneto).
The artwork is fantastic, and I'm digging the story so far. I love time travel so I'm hooked.

Brian Bendis takes the world's most complicated franchise -- the X-Men -- and makes it even more complicated by folding it in on itself an introducing to the present the original core team as of _Uncanny X-Men_ #8. He does so with typical Bendis style -- complex interlocking dialog and insightful understanding of the characters -- and the combo with Stuart Immonent's pencils is lovely.
It's ... well, I can't say it's the best introduction to the X-world ever, but there hasn't been one of those since, oh, _Giant-Sized X-Men_ #1. I like this (and where it's gone in subsequent issues), and I'm on board.

I read this out of complete curiosity for the state of affairs in recent Marvel X-books. It's an interesting premise to bring the old X-Men of the 1970s into the future to see what their future selves have wrought - especially for Cyclops. While it's not going to get me back into reading monthly comics, I'll read these as they come out in trade paperback. This is a good start; I just wish there wasn't so many X-Men titles on the market. It's just too confusing.

After events take a turn for the worse in the aftermath of the death of Professor Xavier; Beast tried to fix things by bringing the original X-Men team into the future to try and alter the timeline with some fairly unexpected consequences. I found this a pretty enjoyable read with plenty of classic X-Men team interaction, humour and surprises along the way, I look forward to reading the next arc!

I wonder sometimes what cultural objects might define this decade. I really liked the Avengers cartoon from 2010, but maybe the rebooted and darker X-men post AvX saga will define it for me. This is a very bleak and sorrow laden story. Exciting, but also sad.

This is way better than it has any right to be. The premise sounds ridiculous, even for comics, but it opens up some surprisingly deep philosophical debates and provides a lot of opportunity for interesting character interactions.
And Jean Grey, guys. She's already amazing. I cannot wait to see the righteous fury she's going to unleash on this world.

This was super interesting. The original X-Men are pulled from the past to confront future Cyclops who has gone completely off the reservation and is trying to start a revolution, going against everything he once hated. It's dark and kind of depressing, but watching the pasty interact with the future is immensely entertaining. Great writing and excellent art. Can't wait for the next installment.

Loved the art and of course loved seeing the young and present X-men meet! It was really dope B) My love for these babies is too big to just belong in the big screen. I am in no way a comic expert so I'm not really sure how I should rate this? All I know is that I'm most definitely interested in continuing this saga.

Admirably ambitious. It kicks up so much dust while trying to disturb the status quo that I'm still not quite sure what I've read, and not sure if I liked it--but I will read more.
