鈥淗e looks like a faerie lover stepped out of a ballad, the kind where no good comes to the girl who runs away with him.鈥
鈥淏ecause you鈥檙e like a story that hasn鈥檛 happened yet. Because I want to see what you will do. I want to be part of the unfolding of the tale.鈥
鈥淏ut I will not stand in front of your happiness. I will not even stand in front of misery that you choose for yourself.鈥
鈥淭hat鈥檚 what comes of hungering for something; you forget to check if it鈥檚 rotten before you gobble it down鈥
鈥淚 stand in front of my window and imagine myself a fearless knight, imagine myself a witch who hid her heart in her finger and then chopped her finger off.鈥
鈥淏ut we all want stupid things. That doesn鈥檛 mean we should have them.鈥
鈥溾€ike taking a dare to run over knives, like an adrenaline strike of lighting, like the moment when you鈥檝e swum too far out in the sea and there is no going back, only cold black water closing over your head.鈥
鈥淚f I cannot be better than them, I will be so much worse.鈥
No matter how careful I am, eventually I'll make another misstep. I am weak. I am fragile. I am mortal.
I hate that most of all.
Nicasia's wrong about me. I do not desire to do as well in the tournament as one of the fey. I want to win. I do not yearn to be their equal.
In my heart, I yearn to best them.
"Nice things don't happen in storybooks," Taryn says. "Or when they do happen, something bad happens next. Because otherwise the story would be boring, and no one would read it."
The Written Review
New week, - all about the best (and worst) literary couples
Jude (and her twin, Taryn) are human but their older sister (Vivi) belonged to another world.![]()
If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.
Father, I am what you made me. I鈥檝e become your daughter after all.Jude and Taryn embrace this wondrous and fearsome world - finding their place among the crazed and the creative, the beasts and the beauties, the tragedies and terrors.
If you hurt me, I wouldn't cry. I would hurt you back.As Taryn cringes in fear, Jude stiffens her spine. If they get tormented, Jude taunts back. And when Jude is pushed, she attacks.
Cardan looks at me as though he's never seen me before. He looks at me as though no one has ever spoken to him like this. Maybe no one has.Simply a stunning modern fairy tale a la Holly Black.

I do not yearn to be their equal. In my heart, I yearn to best them.
鈥淗ave I told you how hideous you look tonight?鈥 Cardan asks, leaning back in the elaborately carved chair, the warmth of his words turning the question into something like a compliment.
鈥淣o鈥 I say, glad to be annoyed back into the present. 鈥淭ell me.鈥
"I can't.鈥
鈥淪o I am to sit here and feed you information,鈥 Cardan says, leaning against a hickory tree. 鈥淎nd you鈥檙e to go charm royalty? That seems entirely backward.鈥
I fix him with a look. 鈥淚 can be charming. I charmed you, didn鈥檛 I?鈥
He rolls his eyes. 鈥淒o not expect others to share my depraved tastes.鈥
He's wrong about me. I am going to make my mayfly life count for something.
I won't be afraid of him or of Prince Dain's censure. If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.
If I cannot be better than them, I will be so much worse.
鈥淣ice things don鈥檛 happen in storybooks,鈥 Taryn says. 鈥淥r when they do happen, something bad happens next. Because otherwise the story would be boring, and no one would read it.鈥
That鈥檚 what comes of hungering for something: You forget to check if it鈥檚 rotten before you gobble it down.
The odd thing about ambition is this: You can acquire it like a fever, but it is not so easy to shed.
鈥淏ecause you鈥檙e like a story that hasn鈥檛 happened yet. Because I want to see what you will do. I want to be part of the unfolding of the tale.鈥
鈥淚 am tired of caring,鈥 I say. 鈥淲hy should I?鈥
鈥淏ecause they could kill you!鈥
鈥淭hey better,鈥 I say to her. 鈥淏ecause anything less than that isn鈥檛 going to work.鈥
鈥淚鈥檝e seen many impossible things. I have seen the acorn before the oak. I have seen the spark before the flame. But never have I seen such as this: A dead woman living. A child born from nothing.鈥
鈥淚f you hurt me, I wouldn鈥檛 cry. I would hurt you back.鈥
Before, I never knew how far I would go. Now I believe I have the answer. I will go as far as there is to go. I will go way too far.
鈥淚 thought I was supposed to be good and follow the rules. But I am done with being weak. I am done with being good. I think I am going to be something else.鈥
鈥淭here鈥檚 safety in being awful.鈥
鈥淒esire is an odd thing. As soon as it鈥檚 sated, it transmutes. If we receive golden thread, we desire the golden needle.鈥
鈥淟ike taking a dare to run over knives, like an adrenaline strike of lightning, like the moment when you鈥檝e swum too far out in the sea and there is no going back, only cold black water closing over your head.
鈥淗e鈥檚 flint, you鈥檙e tinder.鈥
Faerie might be beautiful, but its beauty is like a golden stag鈥檚 carcass, crawling with maggots beneath his hide, ready to burst.
鈥淚 have lied and I have betrayed and I have triumphed. If only there was someone to congratulate me.鈥
