It’s been eighteen years since Shadow Silverhorn conquered Nevaharday and claimed its throne. Renaming the kingdom Velagray, he turned the once thriving city into a militaristic prison that’s snuffing out what few freedoms the horse-centric race called “rahee have left.
Poor, terrorized, and miserable, the rahee yearn for their former prince who died while defending the throne, or so they thought. The truth is their beloved royal has been living under the alias of a rogue named Jaspur Clovenhoof. Moving freely under his false identity, Jaspur has been secretly collaborating with a legendary tribe known as the re’shahna to find a way to unseat his usurper, but it's a strained effort. Laden with guilt over the failures that led to his kingdom’s downfall, the rogue suffers from nightmares spurred by his mistakes until allies wonder whether he’s still capable of becoming the savior they need.
Yet not all of his haunting reminders are just memories. When Jaspur stumbles upon an old, familiar journal, he finds that one ghost in his dreams—his cousin, Rayhan—is real. Rayhan reaches out to Jaspur through visions from beyond the grave in attempt to remind him of the teachings he once held dear, but the rogue is stubborn. He continues to choose anger over forgiveness until it seems his guilt will consume him.
It isn’t until a gypsy named Melah is marked as a target that the rogue finds the purpose he needs to come out of hiding. With her magical talents in King Shadow’s hands, Jaspur realizes he must let go of the past and find the courage to be his people’s hero once again, whether he’s ready or not.
Elizabeth "Elli" Carlton began her writing career as a freelance journalist with a knack for finding the soul behind a story. She covered the music beat for two national magazines and multiple local and online publications for four years. However, fiction steered her in a new direction in 2011 when she drafted her first novel: The Royal Rogue.
In 2015, Elli released her second novel, Chivalry’s Code, which combined two stories from different timelines into a dueling parallel full of twists and ultimatums. It, too, was embraced by her readers, as was The Rogue Trilogy's emotional third installment, Lost Prince of Nevaharday, published in 2018.
Beyond journalism and novel writing, Elli’s 16+ year career includes writing research, marketing materials, and SEO content. She also has provided developmental editing and writing coaching services to individual clients.
She currently works as a principal writer for Gartner, a global research company.
I hurt my ankle, and I have to be sitting down a lot. So lately, all I can do is knit, write, and read. So, I've been doing a lot of reading. And I finished this one book in two days. Incredibly, I must say I liked it. The rating was a 3.8, so I rounded to a 4.
This book has an interesting plot. What I like the most is the lovely way the author writes. The writing is tight and beautiful; I would almost compare her to a very young Naomy Novik in her apprenticeship stages. I liked this book much better than I liked the first book. No worries, I will not give any spoilers. All I will say is her characters started to have a modicum of character arcs. And she is doing a much better job with the dialog in this second book. Jaspur, Rayhan, and Melah were a lot of fun to follow.
If you like fantasy books with a touch of flashbacks, you will love this book.
