Through the years, books for pre-teens have been missed by me. I read through a bunch of when I was in kindergarten, and then I dove straight into mythology and the supernatural. I skipped the books that were meant for late grade school kids, and only now as a father am I really engaging with them.

As a family, we've been focusing on the classic kids books -- like , , etc. -- but Milo拧 & Bront毛 are starting to read bigger books, and we've been looking for things that might interest them. Neither of them is all that keen on whodunits, so Hardy Boys and were easy to pass over.

I found this book for Bront毛 while browsing at the book store, thinking her love of ghosts and spooky stuff would make it a hit. She has worked her way to the third chapter so far, but I decided to crack ahead and see if is any good.

It's okay. It's okay the way a stick of gum's okay when you've got bad breath. You know you want to brush and mouthwash, but the gum will do ... ish.

steals most of its plot from , minus the nasty, scabby, titular character (because he might be offensive), and it throws in a hint of minus the sexual innuendo (because that might be offensive), and it drops all hint of anything even remotely scary (cause *gasp* that might scare pre-teens. Eek!). It is as artificial vanilla as you can get.

I guess it's cute enough for a six year old because Bront毛 is enjoying it so far. I have a feeling, though, that by the time it turns from into "My Haunted Commune," Bront毛 will be wishing she was watching some properly spooky Tim Burton work instead of reading this friendly, wimpy Burton rip-off.

Buku pertama, My Haunted House, adalah kisah pembuka.

A mildly entertaining little novel about precocious Araminta Spookie (love the name!) trying to save her beloved family mansion from being sold. In the process of setting up booby traps, she finds out that her house truly is haunted (hooray! she really hoped it was) and makes some new friends. But her tricks on prospective buyers don't quite go the way she had hoped...

I found parts of this quite humorous and fun, and while other parts grated on me just a bit. Even if Araminta learned her lesson in some ways, and there is a good ending, I'm not sure the full extent of her destructive behavior was addressed and I felt uncomfortable with the constant use of "weird" and "stupid" to describe the prospective buyers. Sometimes I just couldn't enjoy her antics.

Still, it's a short enough read and was a fun way to spend my commute this past week, especially so close to Halloween. I listened to the audiobook, with Katherine Kellgren's excellent narration. I note that the actual novel is illustrated and perhaps the illustrations would add to the humor of the tale so visual children might enjoy that over the audiobook.

Araminta Spookie loves the big old mansion she lives in, she鈥檚 just sure that it is haunted and is delighted at this prospect. However her crabby Aunt Tabby is sick of the house and done with the boiler most of all so she decides to sell it. Araminta is furious about this and determined to stop her aunt from selling the house. Uncle Drac agrees with our young protagonist but refuses to stand up to Aunt Tabby. Our young girl will get some unexpected help and pull some big pranks but will it be enough to save the house?

This was, to me, a sanitized and sweetened up Addams Family though the missing edge/darkness leaves too big of a hole to plug up with a sweet ending. The art really added to the atmosphere that Angie Sage was trying to lean into (she just didn鈥檛 quite hit the mark with this one). Being a fan of Septimus Heap it鈥檚 hard for me to say that I鈥檓 unsure if the series is worth continuing though I was given a copy of the second book in this series so I鈥檒l be giving this one a second shot, especially since the characters introduced later on in the first book hold some promise.

Cute and very quick story. In fact, I finished it in one sitting, maybe in less than an hour! Certainly kept me interested.

There were very beautiful illustrations throughout the book, as well, which made the story even more appealing.

However, Araminta鈥檚 voice was a little bit mean almost throughout the story, which didn鈥檛 make me all too happy. But the ending saved it!

Araminta Spooky spends her days looking for ghosts and secret passages. Until one day she learns that her aunt intends to sell the house without even consulting with Araminta and her uncle 鈥淒rac. She then sets out on a mission to scare away any possible buyers by flinging green slimy gook on their heads, unleashing scary ghosts that make ghoulish screams throughout the house and the like. In the middle of her shenanigans she learns that her house is in fact haunted and she meets up with a real live ghost named Edmund. This makes her even more determined to scare potential buyers away. Unfortunately her antics backfire when the 鈥淲izard鈥 family inquires about the house for sale and turns out to be more amused than scared by Araminta鈥檚 antics. The two families settle into a nice chat together and Araminta鈥檚 aunt agrees to let them buy the house. Araminta tries to express her anger in her aunt鈥檚 decision, then pulls her uncle Drac into the mix to help her get her point across. Her aunt and uncle get into negotiations about the thorn that has been poking in Araminta鈥檚 aunt鈥檚 side - the misbehaving boiler - and they come to a compromise and agreement that uncle Drac will help out more around the house, especially with the boiler. This story is a great illustration of how far a little compromise and understanding can go. Very quick read that will keep young readers engaged and bopping around from room to room with our little Araminta.

I started reading this book because my brother (12 yrs old) challenged me for a reading contest. We both are so much into reading (him - maybe not as much as I am, but still), and thought of having a little bit of fun, since this quarantine is taking forever to end T_T (sigh).
I am still only done with around 70% of the book, but here I am reviewing it anyway.

The book is quite simple and does suit kids well enough. If I was the same age around my brother I would be able to understand why this series is worth a re-reading. My brother particularly loves the Araminta Spookie series and giving me a little bit of a hard time buying the two other books he couldn鈥檛 have his hands on (#4 & #6). I don't know how I missed this series when I was a kid and it seems like it took a whole pandemic to start reading this. If I keep continuing and reads the second book too, I hope I find the answer to why it鈥檚 worth a re-reading.
Sometimes it鈥檚 鈥渘ever too old for a book鈥, but this is an exception (, yet).
P.S. I honestly don't see a point of continuing reading this series.

This is the first book in the series by . I discovered this book at our local library and thought it might be a fun, spooky read for our oldest. She loved it and has read through the entire series very quickly. Now I'm just trying to catch up.

The story is entertaining and fun, a little silly and an easy read. It tells of scary things, but in such a matter-of-fact manner, that they hardly seem scary at all. In fact, it's quite entertaining, in an kind of way. Overall, I really liked this first book in the series and I'm sure I'll read the remaining books very soon.

buku cerita anak2 dr angie sage, yg sblmnya sdh bikin aku jatuh cinta berat pd seri septimus heap-nya. suka tokoh2nya yg msh seunik biasanya, settingnya yg aneh (aneh yg bagus), dan kisahnya yg.... syerem syerem lutju ;)

I really loved the artwork throughout this book. It was quirky, humorous and appropriate as well as creative for a chapter book.
I have to reserve judgement on the story itself until I read the second installment because I finally warmed up and began to like the characters during the last chapter. Up to that point, the main character came off as bratty and the situations were too opportunistic. For example, she talks about wanting to see a ghost and in one day (after searching for years) she sees 2. I can live with coincidence, but it has to have a base to begin with and this story hasn't shown that yet. I am hoping for better things from the second.

This was a very fun middle grade book, maybe suitable for kids or those who want to celebrate Halloween but not be scared. I read this a few years ago and then saw it at the library yesterday so I decided to pick it up. I think that the main character Araminta is very funny and sarcastic, and her friends (the ghosts that haunt her house) make a great cast of interesting people/things. This series is in very short installments and I don't remember exactly but you might be able to read them at random. However, like most series, you should read them in order. I like this series a bit more than Angie Sage's one for older readers, but I will need to finsh that one someday.

As much as the kidlets and I love the Septimus Heap series, I was surprised to find out that Angie Sage had another series I'd never heard of.

It's quite a bit shorter and less complex than Magyk; it's an early chapter book geared toward younger children.

The Addams family type characters fascinated my kids, and they thought it was pretty funny. This book (and The Sword in the Grotto) kept them mesmerized for nearly five hours during our road trip from Nevada to Oregon.

It was fun to listen to, and the humor was sometimes absurd and other times wry. It did bother me, a bit, that Araminta sabotaging her parental figure, Aunt Tabby, was the major plot conflict in this story.

My "Haunted House" is not a "scary story," but it does entertain you with the antics of Araminta, an orphaned girl living with her aunt and uncle in a huge, cobwebby house with lots of spiders and bats. Araminta doesn't want her aunt to sell the house and tries her best to frighten any prospective buyers. Its 5.0 reading level makes it a great read for the younger students. I'm anxious to read the next book in this Araminta Spookie series to see what she's up to in it.

Aku selalu ngiler buat baca seri Septimus Heap-nya Angie Sage, tapi tak pernah langsung menyentuh-membacanya. Tebel banget bukunya, hehehehe....

Fiuhhh...ilustrasinya juara, deh! B.A.G.U.S. bangeth! Sumpah!

Araminta Spook loves her big spooky old house 鈥 except for the fact that she hasn鈥檛 found any ghosts, werewolves or vampires in it yet.

So when Aunty Tabby (Minty lives with her Aunt Tabby and Uncle Drac because her parents never returned from a visit to Transylvania) decides to sell the house because she is sick of cleaning and fixing the house鈥檚 ancient boiler 鈥 Minty does everything she can to stop the sale.

Great illustrations with a feisty, funny main character.

It's mediocre but at least my curiosity about this book is satisfied. Ceritanya sederhana, kalo ada beberapa hal yg saya bilang plothole, gimana ya... Apa pekerjaan Paman Drac? Kalau rumah itu berhantu, kok Araminta baru ketemu Edmund si hantu setelah dia lama tinggal di sana. Sama seperti Paman Horace si baju zirah yg baru bicara setelah rumah Bibi Tabby mau dijual.

Tapi sebagai bacaan ringan, gak papa.
