On its initial publication in Czech in 1942, Saturnin was a best seller, its gentle satire offering an unexpected—if temporary—reprieve from the grim reality of the German occupation. In the years since, the novel has been hailed as a classic of Czech literature, and this translation makes it available to English-language readers for the first time—which is entirely appropriate, for author Zdeněk Jirotka clearly modeled his light comedy on the English masters Jerome K. Jerome and P. G. Wodehouse. The novel’s main character, Saturnin, a “gentleman’s gentleman� who obviously owes a debt to Wodehouse’s beloved Jeeves, wages a constant battle to protect his master from romantic disaster and intrusive relatives, such as Aunt Catherine, the “Prancing Dictionary of Slavic Proverbs.� Saturnin will warm the heart of any fan of literary comedy.

After not finishing his studies at secondary school he served out as a bricklayer, later (1933) he graduated from building technical school in Hradec Králové.
After finishing the school he entered the Czechoslovak Army, where he served till 1940 as an infantry officer. Then he worked at the Ministry of public works and till the end of the WWII he made his living by literature. He worked as an editor of Lidové noviny (newspaper) from 1940 to 1945, then he became an editor of Svobodné noviny (newspaper), after 1951 he worked for two years for the humorous journal Dikobraz. Between 1953 and 1962 he worked in the Czechoslovak broadcast, from where he came back to Dikobraz, where he worked till the end of 60-ies.

I count Saturnin among the best humoristic literature ever written in Czech. Jirotka has achieved the ultimate goal - that is to create entertaining, witty, funny, yet intelligent piece of humoristic literature that is a joy to read.
As far as the English translation is concerned I think that bearing in mind the fact that Saturnin is (for example) full of puns based on Czech language there can propabably never be a translation which would capture the perfection of this piece in its entirety.

Dělníci míchali v kádi jakousi podivnou směs a dílovedoucí se ptal strýce Františka, co z toho vlastně bude. Strýc byl zachmuřen a v záchvatu náhlé upřímnosti řekl: "Ví Bůh." Byl velmi překvapen, když po této lakonické odpovědi jeho spolupracovníci propadli panice a dali se na zběsilý útěk. Domnívali se, že strýc řekl: "Výbuch".

Inteligentní, geniální, humorné - tak bych ve zkratce popsala dílo Zdeňka Jirotky. Během čtení se vám párkrát stane, že se docela nahlas zasmějete, začnete nenávidět tetu Kateřinu, pochopíte, jak dobrodružnou duši má Saturnin a jak inteligentní slečna Barbora je. Nakonci čtení si můžete odpovědět na otázku, co vy byste udělali s opuštěným talířem plným koblih (a pokud jste si nazačátku knihy odpověděli, že nic, na konci čtení se odpověď může docela změnit).

But, definitely not Jeeves. This young man is a little dense, but not so inept as Bertie. The servant is out to throw things into disequilibrium, to nudge his master into a more adventurous life. Imagine embedded stories and a final chapter that offers a post-modern instruction to doubt all that you’ve just read.
But, probably almost as funny as Wodehouse. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Recommended to lighten things up if current events have left you in the depths; you have to have to bit of respite to keep going.

Книжка � бомба!
Дуже приємна і дотепна, глибока в своїх зауваженнях. Завжди чекаєш на нові міркування доктора Влаха, незвичайні витівки Сатурніна і зверхність тітки Катаржини. Любовна лінія з панною Барборою несподівана, мімішна і навіть феміністична.
В останньому розділі автор досить цікаво розрулив з правилом весілля. У мене лишилося тільки одне питання: кому все-таки дід заповів свій спадок?
Дуже приємна і дотепна, глибока в своїх зауваженнях. Завжди чекаєш на нові міркування доктора Влаха, незвичайні витівки Сатурніна і зверхність тітки Катаржини. Любовна лінія з панною Барборою несподівана, мімішна і навіть феміністична.
В останньому розділі автор досить цікаво розрулив з правилом весілля. У мене лишилося тільки одне питання: кому все-таки дід заповів свій спадок?

Jedna z mých oblíbených knih. Už jenom ten začátek s koblihami... Dokonalé.
Celá knížka je vážně zábavná a vtipná, zároveň pěkně napsaná a čtivá. Nepustí především kvůli své jaksi pozitivní tónině. Krása!

Добра книжка про подорож, стосунки і людей. Вона така тепла і мила, місцями іронічна. Є щось в ній від Пратчетта.
Купила я її випадково прочитавши початок першого розділу. Ну і як інкаше?
Доктор Влах поділяє всіх людей на три групи, залежно від того, як би вони поводились лінивого недільного поранку в кавʼярні, добряче поснідавши і отримавши на десерт миску тістечок-«картоплин». Люди з першої групи � без фантазії і без почуття гумору � бездумно дивитимуться на «картоп-лини» мало не до самого полудня. Люди з другої - почнуть моделювати ситуацію, за якої хтось із гостей кавʼярні раптом почне бомбардувати «картоплинами» інших відвідува-чів. А до третьої, найменш чисельної групи можна віднести тих, кого думка про «картоплини», що літають в повітрі, настільки захоплює, що вони встають і беруться її реалізо-вувати. Саме такою людиною є Сатурнін � слуга, якого легковажно взяв на роботу оповідач цієї книжки. І наслідки
не забарились.

Re-read after 4 years from the first reading. It's still enormously funny. BUT. This time I had a bit of a hard time with how women are depicted. There are two women (worth mentioning) there. The first one is a dumb, loud, manipulative, mean creature. The second one is a goddess without a flaw. Women are the only ones to cook or even come to mind when some cooking needs to be done. The "good one" is always smiling and in a good mood (a picture I'm particularly allergic to). She's the type who will probably be an amazing mother and a successful carrier woman at the same time. I understand the book's from a different era and that back then it was probably modern and even empowering (women being smart, driving and driving well, adventurous...). But I'm a woman from this era and I know how toxic impossible standards are, so I was very uncomfortable with this character. All in all, however, as I said in the beginning, I still appreciate the book for its humorous side.

One of the best books I've ever read. I think it even exceeds qualities of Three Men in a Boat and that's something, you know! Pretty much every single line in there is a jewel, every one of those characters is absolutely original and charming in their oddness. Even though the narrator came out in much better light in the second half of the book, I loved him in the first one as well. It's so hilarious to read such a funny story when it is described by such a bore. All and all, I can imagine myself reading this over and over again!

Báječná kní��ka! Moc jsem si ji užila. Chápu, proč mi ji všichni tak chválili. Možná bych řekla, že je to i poměrně neobvyklý námět na knížku, styl psaní neuvěřitelně poutavý a vtipný, opravdu jsem se u toho zasmála. Knížka, u které si fakt odpočinete. Takže do těchto chladných dní je to naprosto ideální volba, vřele doporučuji!:)

Velmi příjemné na poslech, fakt že jo. Ale abych byla upřímná, pro můj osobní ňuňu prožitek mi tam chyběla ještě nějaká ta pověstná jiskra. Každopádně byste Saturnina neměli minout.

The historical and cultural significance of this book is interesting, to say the least. The idea of imitating the style of British authors as a subtle rebellion against Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1942 sends it on the way to a good rating from the start.
Despite the clear influence of P.G. Wodehouse and his fellows, I'm told this book is quintessentially Czech. I'm not sure what this means precisely, but somehow I understand it; there is definitely something about it that convinces you it could not have taken place anywhere but central Europe.
It's not exactly the same kind of humor that Wodehouse employs either, somewhat lacking in the colorful similes department (I've sadly never read a Wodehouse book, but I'm quite familiar with a collection of choice quotes). The character cast is, however, customary to its genre: awful aunts, clever butlers, and romantic entanglements.
Certain tropes are subverted, considering Saturnin's goal is not to keep his master out of trouble, but to drag him into it.
At first I was a little irritated at the irrelevant tangents every couple paragraphs, but then I realized the irrelevant tangents were the whole point of the book and its hilarity.
I highly recommend it, for the comedy, the still-applicable social ramblings of both Dr. Witherspoon and the main character, and for the insight into a time gone by, but a culture that lives on.
I would be interested in reading the original, if only I knew Czech.

i have been looking for an english language copy of this book since i heard it mentioned in a commentary by kurt anderson on studio 360 a few years ago in which he described it as the inspiration for a cafe in prague where you can buy a dozen day old jelly donuts to throw at the other customers (or not depending on your character). i'm only a little bit in but it is already proving deliciously absurd.

Saturnin is the Jeeves of Czech literature, with his own sardonic slavic twist. He's also one of the Czechs most favorite literary characters and I can certainly see why.
I'm looking forward to reading Saturnin in Czech next - the English version has a translation echo to it that makes me wish for the Czech.

Świetna lektura na poprawę humoru. Angielski Jeeves w czeskim wydaniu. W Czechach bije rekordy popularności, przeskakując samego wojaka Szwejka.
Narratorem jest młody arystokrata, który zatrudnia służącego. Bardzo szczególnego służącego, bo Saturnin jest jedyny w swoim rodzaju. Już na początku mamy niesamowity opis, jak pozbył się nieproszonej ciotki i jej synka Milousa z wynajętej barki. Innym razem rozpuścił po mieście plotkę, która spowodowała, że pewnego dnia jego pan otrzymał prośbę dyrektora miejscowego ZOO, aby pomógł w pewnej misji...
Akcja w głównej mierze toczy się w górskiej posiadłości dziadka. Ów starszy pan zaprasza tam na wakacje naszego bohatera ze służącym, córkę przyjaciół pannę Barborę i doktora Vlacha. Do ekipy dołącza, choć bez zaproszenia, ciotka Katerina z synem. Owa dama za wszelką cenę pragnie przekonać dziadka, że jego majątek po śmierci powinien trafić w najlepsze, czyli jej ręce .
Na miejscu obserwujemy, jak młody arystokrata zyskał rywala o względy Barbory w osobie młodego Milousa i jak Saturnin po cichutku odsuwał ten problem od swojego pana. Do tego następuje kilka mniejszych i większych katastrof, i chyba tylko powódź, która zerwała mostek i odcięła posiadłość od świata, grożąc mieszkańcom śmiercią głodową, nie była dziełem Saturnina. Brak prądu, strzelanina, wyprawa dookoła źródeł rzeki, na końcu której okazuje się, że...
Jak na dobrą powieść przystało, kończy się ślubem. O parze nowożeńców nie da się jednak powiedzieć, że są to państwo młodzi.

Тисяча зірок! Я вже дуже давно не сміялась вголос від книжок, це дуже позачасовий гумор і така потрібна зараз життєствердність (особливо зважаючи, в яких умовах і в якому часі ця книжка писалась - Чехословаччина 1942 року). «Сатурнін» є отим таким безтурботним залюбованим зітханням-самонавіюванням, шо все мине.
Тут замішано все найкраще: тонкий гумор, майстерність оповіді, супер живі персонажі, сюжет, який затягує і несе тебе легко, яскрава мова, дотепні алюзії на інші твори, а найголовніше - наївна віра, шо «десь і колись обов’язков� мав бути великий дідусів дім, літо, чарівна закоханість і пригоди». Будо дуже сумно від того, шо книга закінчилась, і шо Зденєк Їротка має ше тільки один роман.
Книга в саме сердечко ❤️�

lootsin enamat. kuidagi väga ebaühtlane lugu oli, oleks tahtnud kuulda rohkem Saturninist (kellega oleks ilmselt ka rohkem nalja saanud), aga siis hoopis mingid tädid ja vanaisad ja preili Barborad võtsid üle.
