"Human beings can be awful cruel to one another", says Huck Finn after he sees the King and the Duke tarred and feathered. "I warn't feeling so brash as I was before, but kind of ornery, and humble, and to blame, somehow - though I hadn't done nothing."
I felt the same way after reading this truly horrible series of tableaux from a marriage that's gone off the rails. They can't agree on how to educate their daughter; he wants Bertha to train to be a teacher, but she wants her to stay at home and get a Christian education. She doesn't like the thought that the kid will go to school among atheists and freethinkers and learn to despise her mother.
So Laura methodically spreads rumors that her husband is mentally unstable, while at the same time sowing doubts in his mind that he is really the child's father. He can see her strategy, but can't think how to counteract it: she's clever and completely ruthless. She goads him until he snaps and tries to kill her, then uses it as evidence that he should be declared insane. His old nursemaid, the only person he trusts, is delegated to get the straightjacket on him. Raging powerlessly, he has a stroke and dies.

Gently but firmly, he put his arm around my back, held my hand, and counted the steps I was supposed to take.
Waltz, Rumba, Tango, Cha Cha, Quick Step...
He taught me the basic movements of every dance so I could confidently perform with any partner I might meet.
Initiating me on the secrets of lead and follow, control and cohesion, my father showed me what I ought to expect from a dance partner.

A complex ,painful, and sad play .It portrays the tragedy of a man and his wife(Laura) struggling for the possession of their daughter(Bertha), he is a freethinker, a man of ideas. "
The will ... is the driving force of the mind. If it's injured, the mind falls to pieces. "
His wife is uneducated narrow minded, selfish,
And very cruel who appears as an evil woman and a monster
who succeeded at the end in driving him mad
"
It's terribly hard to be married ... harder than anything else. I think you have to be an angel."
The father wanted to remove his daughter from the ignorant and superstitious atmosphere she is living in.
"This house is full of women who all want to have their say about the child. My mother-in-law wants to make a Spiritualist of her. Laura wants her to be an artist; the governess wants her to be a Methodist, old Margret a Baptist, and the servant-girls want her to join the Salvation Army! It won't do to try to make a soul in patches like that. I, who have the chief right to try to form her character, am constantly opposed in my efforts. And that's why I have decided to send her away from home"
He wanted to her to develop a strong character AND TO BE AN independent woman without any inference from any one,

August Strindberg鈥檚 play 鈥淭he Father鈥� [Fadren] from 1887 is probably his most well-known play across the world. It focuses on a marriage that has some severe problems. In a similar fashion to Ibsen Strindberg鈥檚 writing is vivid and its themes are relevant even today. The main difference is that Strindberg has an axe to grind when it comes to women. In my opinion the play is superb during the first two acts, but, unfortunately, the third act is used by Strindberg as tirade towards women. *spoiler* The play is about a conflict between husband and wife. Both want control over their daughter鈥檚 fate. However, the husband believes that his wife should decide nothing whatsoever as it falls into the man鈥檚 realm. Now the wife makes her husband doubt that he is the father of their daughter. This becomes a nasty seed that germinates in his mind. The wife also deceives her husband by poisoning the surrounding society with the rumors that he is going insane. She wants to label him such and thereby take over the household. This is brilliant writing and leads to the end of Act 2. Psychologically Laura appears to be a "coiled viper"听at this point in time. However, the husband literally goes insane in the third act and goes on a misogynistic tirade followed by his death from a stroke while in a straightjacket. I felt as if the third act could have been written in a different way to bring the devious plotting from act 2 to a brilliant end, i.e. to actually label the husband as insane (even though sane) due to the wife鈥檚 brilliant plotting and working the social machinery. As far as I鈥檓 concerned this third act ruins the play.
It seems to me that the play reflects Strindberg鈥檚 own experiences (in particular with his first wife, Siri von Essen). The dialogues are vibrant, caustic and make one feel uncomfortable at times due to their acrid realism. One feels as if one is sitting between two people arguing about very personal matters. It reminded me a bit of Ingmar Bergman鈥檚 brilliant 鈥淪cenes from a Marriage鈥�. It is an excellent play, but partially broken towards the end due to Strindberg鈥檚 鈥渁genda鈥�. Ibsen succeeds better in terms of handling the 19th century 鈥渨oman鈥� issue. I鈥檓 a bit surprised that 鈥淭he Father鈥� is labeled as Strindberg鈥檚 most famous play as I view 鈥淢iss Julie鈥� as a much more vibrant and complex drama. Obviously 鈥淭he Father鈥� is about issues dealing with power and the gender conflict within the social hierarchy of the 19th century. These issues are still extremely relevant in today鈥檚 world and the play deserves our attention.

CAPTAIN: Yes. She has children; but he doesn't.- What are you getting at? Feminism, women's emancipation, Ibsenism?... We- all of us- lived our little lives, unconscious as children, full of ideals, illusions, delusions. And then we woek up. Right enough, we woke up and turned round, with our feet on the pillow, and he who woke us was himself walking in his sleep.
Reading Strindberg's works sometimes makes me kind of uncomfortable, mainly because he's a polar opposite of Ibsen, who I like a lot. Therefore, the contradiction between the two talented playwrights makes me feel as if I'm supposed to pick a side, which I would say is a very hard situation. Strindberg certainly had a bone to pick with Ibsen in regards to feminism and women's rights, which led to him writing mockeries of plays like A Doll's House- The Father is one of a couple of plays that does that.
This is a very sad story about a husband and wife who both have different ideas about what their daughter should be taught. The husband is the one to truly suffer since he seems to be in a househld full of domineering women; his lack of control over the situation leads to a mental degradation on his part. There are a few things that are tragic about this play, the first of which is the fact that Strindberg portrays a truly dysfunctional family that falls apart more and more throughout the story. Secondly, Strindberg paints a very negative picture of women in this situation, which I think is the reason why I felt so uncomfortable reading it.
I enjoyed the allusions and parallels in this play a lot. The obvious one would be to A Doll's House, which is the play that Strindberg attacked with this play. Another clear allusion I see is to Agamemnon, which clearly focuses on another domineering, revenge-seeking mother and a situation with a daughter who has no say.

"Ah, my tough lion's skin that you would take from me. Omphale! Omphale! You cunning woman who loved peace and learnt to disarm us. Awake, Hercules, before they take your club away from you! You want to trick us out of our armour, too, and made believe it was only tinsel. It was iron, you know, before it was tinsel. It used to be the smith who forged the soldier鈥檚 tunic; now it's the seamstress. Omphale! Omphale! Raw strength has given way before treacherous weakness. Damn you, woman! A curse upon all your sex!"The Father is a conceptually simple play: husband and wife, man and woman, captain and housewife, atheist and believer, are at war, in battle 鈥� a battle of the sexes. What is at stake is power, or more specifically, control over their daughter and her future. In the end, wife/woman wins: she convinces important others that her husband has lost his mind, and eventually succeeds in driving him insane (by suggesting that he may not be the father of their child) so that he is put into a straightjacket and loses all power of attorney (and ultimately all power 鈥� including that of life). The play at times feels slightly caricatured; especially the character of the wife, Laura, is not particularly well developed 鈥� lacking flesh and blood, so to say. The air of misogyny, for which Strindberg was infamous, is somewhat misty in The Father. For instance, against the Captain's diatribes, here is Laura:
"It's strange, but I've never been able to look at a man without feeling I'm superior."Laura is strong and intelligent; but of course, Laura is also cruel and cunning and destructive and self-interested. She is the antagonist to the protagonist Captain. So perhaps the attack on women is not so balanced, in the end, as it would appear.
I have never been particularly interested in 'the battle of the sexes' 鈥� perhaps because I come from a relatively happy and stable family (my parents celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary just the other day), and believe that if you are a decent human being, find another decent human being, and fall in love together, then there is neither need of nor place for struggle - let alone hatred. Yet issues of power in gender relations are, of course, still very relevant today; and The Father, though exaggerated and slightly dated in its treatment of the subject, still intrigues from a modern perspective. The personal nature of the drama - Strindberg was going through a bitter divorce - also shines through.

if this was a study of the destructive gender roles under patriarchy it would be a five star read. it's not tho, it's an expression of one man's fear of demonic women stealing men's power in the system created for them. guys, did you like think ab how like patriarchy is so like scary like bc imagine what if it like turns against men like instead of benefiting them like and like hurting women??? imagine that like??? like scary right???

Strindberg鈥檚 play is a tragic family drama. Although not autobiographical per se, it is impossible to read this play without noting the bitterness in the family struggle, the feeling of powerlessness against an immoral adversary, and the tragic loss of control as a parent. Strindberg wrote this play shortly after his own marriage dissolved, and his wife retained custody of his children even though she showed up drunk, led a dissolute and adulterous life, and was not likely the parent preferred by his children. It is not coincidental, therefore, that in this play the noble Captain is declared insane by all the women in his household, and stripped of his authority to do what he believed was in the best interest of his children (and that they have no say in the matter either. Strindberg gives voice to his bitterness against women in general in the voice of the Nurse:
鈥淣URSE: I don鈥檛 understand it, but I suppose it鈥檚 because you are all women鈥檚 children, everyone of you, great or small鈥︹€�
Finally, he laments his own choices, and his own undoing.
鈥淐APTAIN: Yes, that鈥檚 how it was. My father and mother never wanted me, so I was born without a will. When you and I became one I thought I was completing myself; that鈥檚 how you got the upper hand, so that I 鈥� although I was the commander in barracks and on parade 鈥� when I was with you, I was the one to take orders. Once the captain decides that his only daughter would study abroad, he considers it a done deal. After all, children belong to their fathers. Heck, a woman gives up all her rights through marriage. But his wife has a different view. "What makes you or any other man think that their child is really theirs?" (mind you, paternity tests didn't exist back in 1887). After the idea gets planted in his head, the captain is doomed. All one has to do is wait and watch him sink his own ship.

In Miss Julie he demonstrates how a woman can loose all value through unmarried sex, and here we see how she gains all the power through manipulation. But I believe he uses this technique to cause more drama (in real life Strindberg fell in love with a married woman who left her husband for him).

What an interesting work of Strindberg's. I still have to think about this a bit, but wow. He seems to work emotional thought and real-life situations into his works with incredible ease. There is so much to think about, so much to dream of, so much to connect. A great many things are happening at once, and I can't hold them down with one finger. A play to be read twice, maybe even thrice over for minuscule details left cleverly hidden among the cracks.
There is the battle of the sexes that is so strongly involved and intertwined in this high quality play. The question of domination and equality, which was surely present at the time Strindberg wrote this small but wonderfully packed story. The battlefield of women and control. What are relationships? What is important? Which should be emphasized? How should one view the past and the present? The value of law over relationships? What is key? Most interestingly... who is the father?
Strindberg connects to the real world at the same time as he tells a fictional story, which is remarkable for any author (and makes it automatically 5 stars). I will be sure to read this again at a later date and glean some more delights from its pages.

It's amazing that although Strindberg wrote this play in 1887, it could've been easily written yesterday. and probably it'd have been classified as a "masculist" literature!the picture of man slaving to remain his senses, his honour, his influence and the free will touches very deeply by its descriptiveness and accuracy. the struggle of sexes has never been descibed so well ever before. and Strindberg needed only three acts, six characters and the classical unity as his ally to show all this. now, no matter what, I have to see it on stage - the dialogues are very brief and succinct but at the same time simply overloaded with emotions and drama. each character is very distinct and original - with demonic Laura on the very top - and it's well shown in the pettiest details in the first act. and the language! good lord, it begs for learning Swedish from this very moment- just to be able to read this play in an original version! to all theatre lovers and theatre ignorants: just read it! it's a damn good play!
