Yuge!: 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump

Rate this book
Doonesbury is one of the most overrated strips out there. Mediocre at best.
—Donald Trump, 1989

A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER!

He tried to warn us. Ever since the release of the first Trump-for-President trial balloon in 1987, Doonesbury ’s Garry Trudeau has tirelessly tracked and highlighted the unsavory career of the most unqualified candidate to ever aspire to the White House. It’s all there—the hilarious narcissism, the schoolyard bullying, the loathsome misogyny, the breathtaking ignorance; and a good portion of the Doonesbury cast has been tangled up in it. Join Duke, Honey, Earl, J.J., Mike, Mark, Roland, Boopsie, B.D., Sal, Alice, Elmont, Sid, Zonker, Sam, Bernie, Rev. Sloan, and even the Red Rascal as they cross storylines with the big, orange airhorn who’s giving the GOP such fits.

Garry Trudeau is the “sleazeball “third-rate talent who draws the “overrated comic strip Doonesbury , which “very few people read. He lives in New York City with his wife Jane Pauley, who “has far more talent than he has."

Garretson Beekman "Garry" Trudeau is an American cartoonist, best known for the Doonesbury comic strip. In 1970, Trudeau's creation of Doonesbury was syndicated by the newly formed Universal Press Syndicate. Today Doonesbury is syndicated to almost 1,400 newspapers worldwide and is accessible online in association with Slate Magazine at doonesbury.com. In 1975, he became the first comic strip artist to win a Pulitzer, traditionally awarded to editorial-page cartoonists. He was also a Pulitzer finalist in 1990. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1977 in the category of Animated Short Film, for A Doonesbury Special, in collaboration with John Hubley and Faith Hubley. A Doonesbury Special eventually won the Cannes Film Festival Jury Special Prize in 1978. Other awards include the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) Newspaper Comic Strip Award in 1994, and the Reuben Award in 1995. He was made a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1993. Wiley Miller, fellow comic-strip artist responsible for Non Sequitur, called Trudeau "far and away the most influential editorial cartoonist in the last 25 years." In addition to his work on Doonesbury, Trudeau has teamed with Elizabeth Swados and written plays, such as Rap Master Ronnie and Doonesbury: A Musical Comedy. In 1988, Trudeau joined forces with director Robert Altman for the HBO miniseries Tanner '88 and the Sundance Channel miniseries sequel Tanner on Tanner in 2004. In 1996, Newsweek and The Washington Post speculated that Trudeau wrote the novel Primary Colors, which was later revealed to have been written by Joe Klein. Trudeau wrote the political sitcom Alpha House, starring John Goodman and Bill Murray. The pilot was produced by Amazon Studios and aired in early 2013. Due to positive response Amazon has picked up Alpha House to develop into a full series.

Ted’s review of this book is very complete and interesting. He constructed the review in August 2016. I am one of the few people bothering to take a look at this book after the election. The reason for the fact that is now largely being ignored is that it was funny once and no longer can be funny, as the joke has turned on us. We have become the joke. And this book, almost eerily prophetic, now seems deeply sad. In other words, political satirist/cartoonist Trudeau can’t be blamed. When businessman blowhard narcissist Trump was floating the idea of running for President first in 1987 (!!) (which his son continues to say is a step down for his billionaire father), Trudeau saw this as a rich opportunity for ridicule. And he has been doing this for THIRTY YEARS.

Being a man of “a certain age and political leaning (guess!) I have read almost all of these strips as they were published from then and until today, and I thought it was all a rich commentary on certain American tendencies. The commentary was and is consistent with the dark satire of Hunter S. Thompson in books such as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Crass and ugly Americanism. Self-promotion at the expense of anything resembling democracy.

And what did Trudeau say to Amy Goodman when she asked if he was surprised at the US election results?

Yes. I’m no smarter than anyone else in terms of understanding where this was all going to go. My assumption, after 2012, when he was attacking the president and he got his first taste of double-digit poll numbers, that he would make a run this time around. But I thought it would be just as part of the—his normal brand enhancement and that once he’d gotten the maximum promotional value out of a run, that he would step out. Who knew he would catch on like this? Certainly not me.

Trump has not ignored Trudeau, ever. Trump calls him "overrated," "a sleazeball," "a jerk" and "a total loser." He’s the first cartoonist to win the Pulitzer Prize, but you know what he would say about that committee that voted for Trudeau’s prize.

You can find the strips all online, but here’s a sample:

It’s not his best stuff, actually, but it gets better as we get into the new century.

One of the members of his election team said, yesterday, meeting with members of the Clinton team in a public forum, “The mistake you all made was taking everything he says seriously, as if it corresponds to the facts. The American people obviously didn’t do that.

Right. But some of us American and international people who are prepared to actually listen to and analyze what people actually say (and do) and call bullshit when they lie or just talk off the top of their heads, we didn’t ignore what Trump said and says, and we won’t.

As Trudeau also said, “If Trump wins, I'll miss civilization as we know it.

Very funny, Garry. Why am I not laughing?

This graphic collection was, unfortunately, not sufficient to enlighten enough actual Trump voters to prevent his becoming president!! But then Trudeau never imagined, I suppose, that Trump would have the help of a foreign country.

His message, conveyed through the tabloids, boiled down to this: Get off my cloud, loser. Which is not, of course, how satire works. The target, having set himself up, doesn't get a say over the incoming.

From the Preface ... which includes a photo of a torn out newspaper clipping from a PEOPLE section, complete with photo of youthful-looking The Donald.

This from the blurb for the book on

He tried to warn us Ever since the first Trump-for-President trial balloon popped up in 1987, Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau has been sounding the alarm, spotlighting the unsavory career of the most unfit candidate to ever covet that famous tear-down on Pennsylvania Avenue. “People tell me I should be flattered, was Trump’s initial response to appearing in Doonesbury, but the boasting barely lasted a few news cycles. Before long, he’d moved on to confusion (“Most people are like me; they don’t comprehend what Trudeau’s trying to achieve), followed by prevarication, (“Actually, I don’t read his stuff), wishful thinking (“It seems very few people read what he writes), whining (“It’s too bad that he’s allowed to write this garbage), and finally, a torrent of name-calling (“sleazeball, “third-rate talent, “jerk, “total loser). Now assembled for the first time are all the strips which have given the big, orange airhorn such fits over the years. Published just in time for the political conventions, Yuge! 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump brings together all of Trudeau’s skillful, laser-focused and wickedly funny strips about all things Trump.

Here's a couple "recent" strips that appear in the book:

The book Leaves out the top 2 panels

same as above

Why the missing 1/2 star? Some of the earlier strips (the first of which is from Sept. 16 1987), are fairly dilute solutions, involving on-going stories in which The Donald plays a somewhat supporting role. Still funny, but ironic-smile sort of funny.

FINALLY ...

Here’s my patented TOTALLY VERBAL rendition of a comic strip, from one of the earlier strips. (The above links were available because the Post offers free access to the last year and a half of Doonesbury.)

The characters are Mark

and Mike

From May 1, 1994

Panel 1. Mark and Mike in room, discussing
Mark: I saw Howard Stern on “Geraldo today. Boy, do they deserve each other

Panel 2. Close-up of the two.
Mark: People like that always make me wonder How do they live with the embarrassment of being themselves?

Panel 3. Black, purplish silhouettes of the characters.
Mark: I have this theory that in the evolution of the celebrity, natural selection has favored the least self-aware: they don’t know they’re appalling!

Panel 4. Mike holding his newspaper, looking at Mark who’s facing away from him.
Mike: Think so?
Mark: Absolutely. Ordinary people couldn’t possibly function at that level of public humiliation

Panel 5. Kitchen, Mark hidden behind fridge door, rummaging for something.
Mark: For example, what would you do if you woke up one morning to discover you were, say, Donald Trump or Marla Maples?

Panel 6. Mike gazing distantly, Mark standing looking at him.
Mike: Well, I imagine I’d have to kill myself.
Mark: Of course you would! And ٳ󲹳’s why nature made them clueless!

; }

And here's the last, most recent strip in the book.

Let's try to select ten (not the best ten, that would be impossible just any ten) of these Trump® Brand insults from that strip that apply to The Donald himself here goes
"CLOWN!" "DISGRACE!" "BLOWHARD!" (god this is so easy) "DISHONEST!" "KNOW-NOTHING!" "DISLOYAL!" (to his country) "DISGUSTING!" "NASTY WITH LIES!" "UNETHICAL!" "SAD!"

... there you have it. What a way to start each and every morning, slinging Trump's insults back at him. Of course this doesn't quite overcome the fact that he is a very dangerous and icky person. But a cartoonist (and reviewer) can only do so much.

From the book blurb:

I bought this book back in July when it was first published and long before most people, including me, believe Trump had a chance to win the presidency. While enjoying these comic strips I laughed out loud at the mere thought that he could actually do it.

Unnerving how prophetic Trudeau was more than 30 years ago when he started featuring Trump on his famous strips.
Funny, sardonic and sadly, very prescient.

The sad thing is, Donnie T's been like this for thirty years....actually, technically it should be seventy, since I would imagine that this little shit-gibbon's peccadilloes were nursed in the cradle.

But this is more of a record or commentary on DJT's public life, so maybe let's say forty.

UGH. UGH. UGH.

Also, I'm kind of proud that I'm finally smart enough to get the jokes in Doonesbury now.

Everything I know about Tr*mp, I learned from Gary Trudeau, who's been brilliantly mocking the short-fingered vulgarian since practically before I was born. It was a shrewd business decision over at Andrews McMeel to put out this compilation, but I'm glad they did I'll consider reading it once every few months my civic duty until the monster has been deposed.

Also, in the meantime, who can make this into a gif where the "hair" just endlessly swirls around and around in a creepy unnatural way?

This book was lent to me by my mother. We are both unapologetic progressive liberals. But it was gifted to her by my more conservative brother.

Honestly, I never paid much attention to Trump before he became a candidate in the presidential primaries. I had an awareness of him, but I never watched The Apprentice, read anything he wrote, or bought anything with his name on it.

What's fascinating to me, though I suppose it shouldn't be, is that his bombastic toddler Lothario persona, and his hunger for validation and political power, were well established 30 years ago, when Trudeau started lampooning him.

It's an interesting time capsule of a collection.

How is it possible that Trump has been running for president since the 80s? Where was I? In some damn disco probably, drinking a cocktail with Donna Summer.

How is it possible that Trump, despite his aging jowels and deepening orange hue, has changed not one iota since then?

How is it possible that Trudeau had this guy's number since he appeared on the publicity circuit? (And can I get the cartoonist to read my palm?)

How is it that Trump's language hasn't evolved in thirty years? Disaster! Phony! Worthless! Really pathetic! Slob! Low energy! Horrible! Not nice! Totally flawed! Overrated! Truly weird! Sad! Disgusting! Liar! Unattractive! Irrelevant! Clueless! Fraud! Dope! Sad! Worthless! Overrated! Horrible! Slob! Biased! Crude! Really pathetic! Lightweight!

1987
"Mr. Trump, as a developer of luxury condos and casinos... Do you think you'd have any rapport at all with voters of modest means?"

"Are you kidding? I've spent my whole life working with people of modest means!"

Uh...in what capacity, sir?

"Evicting them! I've seen how these people live!"

Doonesbury!!!!! One of the great comic strips for adults of all time......Gary Trudeau is clever and never backs down from a good fight with those who he lampoons. This is a new book (2016) which is a compilation of 30 years worth of Doonesbury on Donald Trump. He started following Trump in 1987 when Mr. Trump floated his first trial balloon for President and through the years has savaged him with hilarious acuity. I certainly don't want to get political in a book review but how can one help it when, although exaggeration, the content of the strips hits the nail on the head.

All of the familiar Doonesbury characters are here and at one point, Uncle Duke (one of my favorites) is the captain of Trump's yacht, the Trump Princess and doing his dirty work for him. And it goes on from there. Trump called Trudeau a "third-rate talent trying to get publicity on my back". Someone should tell Trudeau's millions of readers over the years that he is just third-rate......they might disagree. This is a book not to be missed, regardless of your political persuasion. It is sure to offend some and please others. Recommended.

You'll find this collection remarkable (and often funny), believing that Trudeau must be some sort of psychic, until you realize that Trump's just always been a narcissistic asshole. The most jaw-dropping moment for me was when during getting his hair "created," Trump's media strategist comments that his manner of attacking Rosie O'Donnell's personal appearance may not be working for him. (Trump responds, his whiffled coif all set in place, unaware of his own ugliness, "Why not?"). The year the strip was published was January 22, 2007, meaning he's been bullying her for at least a decade. I think the revelation that Trump has always been as awful as he is now makes his rise all the more disheartening. I don't expect him to win the Presidency, but why have we given this lowbrow ignorant clown so much of our attention in the first place?

I had to bail... I made it through the 80’s and 90’s and was just too disheartened to continue reading this. I thought it would be a great way to laugh at the absurdity of it all, but instead I was reminded of just how long we’ve know what kind of person he was and still people voted for him. 🙄

Over Christmas my 80-year-old mother struggled to explain to me why she voted for Donald Trump. This is a woman who has a genius-level IQ, takes a dim view of misogynists and bullies after having spent decades working with high-testosterone doctors, attends Church regularly, and is mighty suspicious of Russia. She thought Capricorn One smacked of anti-American Soviet propaganda.

She couldn’t explain herself. At all. She has completely fallen for the bullshit. It was astounding to me. I asked her how she could ignore the decades of evidence that Trump is a horrible, stupid, racist, misogynistic bully. She said she hadn’t heard those stories.

That last part might be true. After all, she did work as a nurse for 45 years, pulling 12-hour shifts while standing on her feet and having to take call two weekends a month. It doesn’t leave a lot of downtime to pay attention to self-important blowhards like Trump and other celebrity gossip.

This book is proof that Trump has been a raging asshole for decades. Trudeau first started lampooning Trump in 1987, and all the things he’s known for now were apparent even then. He truly is a terrible person, vile in every imaginable way. I can’t believe this douchenozzle is President.

I was going to post some pics from this strip, which has been dead-on with the zings for 30 years, but plenty of sites have already done that. Go take a look:

At the time these cartoons were written Donald Trump was a minor occasionally featured character in the Doonesbury repertory. Four years ago, when I bought Yuge! : 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump he was still a candidate and it seemed possible to laugh him away. How innocent we were.

Events have proved that Donald Trump is an over entitled, self-centered, deaf to himself, indifferent toward others, many times failed busines man, bully and President. Very possibly a soon to be re-elected President. It is deliberately part of the American System, but also highly symbolic that he owes his election to a lot of empty American space.

The problem with doing a burlesque of Trump is that so much of it depends on things he only might have said or done. When he was a side show, New York failing developer he was good for these kinds of laughs. Now they are so much Fake News. His never happened, but might have misadventures on his Yuge yacht may have been funny, but they are not true. It is funnier and of greater irony D.T. managed to bankrupt his casino.

His many associations with Playboy, including participation in a movie- And while I prefer that the First Lady of all presidents get move deference, he has at least three known “Baby Mommas. His associations with the sins of the flesh are widely photographed events and very expensive legal bills where they are not. And yet he is still the darling of the religious right.

In the history of the United State, only one presidential candidate has ever said “Hit him, I will pay for it. The Donald has continued with ugly physical threats and angry divisive language and yet this same man is shocked that there is politically driven violence in the streets.

The list of real direct from life events, quotes and the rest are grist for the cartoon mill. Making up jokes may have seemed sufficient 4 years ago, but now they are stale, fake news.

GB TRUDEAU CAN SEE THE FUTURE, Y'ALL.

He told us 30 years ago that the current shitshow regime we're trying to survive was going to happen and most of us skipped over it in favor of Garfield and Peanuts.

I would've rolled on the floor laughing at this book if it wasn't so damn scarily accurate. He nailed Tr*mp's misogyny, ignorance, bigotry and delusional behavior way before we had to watch it on the news everyday. The comic strips are preceded by an insightful forward by Trudeau that is worth the 5 stars on it's own. (Plus it speaks volumes when he says in the 80s, Tr*mp's biggest complaint about being skewered in Doonesbury was the Trudeau apparently didn't realize how "handsome" Tr*mp was and didn't reflect that in his art. BARF. One of the funniest things in the book -- if only because it's the least terrifying -- is the way Trudeau has drawn Tr*mp's hair over the years.

(Also, A+++ for succinctly nailing the hypocrisy of all the so-called "Christians" who support Tr*mp.) I'd buy a copy of this for all my Tr*mp loving family members, but they're all too stupid and brainwashed to 'get it'.

This collection shows that once again, you can give Americans the answers in advance and they'll still fail the test. So Trudeau is the “sleazeball “third-rate talent who draws the “overrated comic strip Doonesbury, which “very few people read. One guess as to which child tantrum twitted those wonderfully endorsing words. I've not followed Doonesbury for many years... since January 2007, when we stopped getting the Stars and Stripes in Korea before moving back to the states. Doonesbury was one of two political-ish comics the S&S ran on their Opinion page. The other was the deplorably unoriginal and immature amateur Bruce Tinsley's Mallard and Fillmore. (The editors kept getting hate mail over Trudeau's portrayal of W. Bush. The short-memoried military forgets that Trudeau has skewered every president, regardless of denomination - it's what he does for a living!) I've picked up a few of his collections in the intervening years, then this popped up when I was searching for something else...instant must read!

Published in 2016 before the final tragedy, it's hilarious (and tragic). Snippets from Trudeau's Preface, April 14, 2016:
[From the 1987 start] The target, having set himself up, doesn't get a say over the incoming.

[T] told Newsweek, 'People tell me I should be flattered.' But as there was nothing remotely flattering about the portrayal, he soon became confused, then irritated - all the more as I was drawing him in a way that suggested I was unaware of how good-looking he was. By the end of the week, it was game on. [T] had someone new to wail on, and I had a new recurring character, one whose real-life counterpart could be counted on to react in real time.

Trudeau calls him an embarrassment of follies. And then
But the best was yet to come. As [T] bore down on his seventieth year, he needed a new neighborhood to ruin [...]

You can't make this stuff up, so why try? Some people feel [T] is beyond satire, but we professionals know he is satire, pure and uncut, free for all to use and enjoy, and for that we are not ungrateful. For our country, though, we can only weep.

That was before Putin's Choice won in 2016.

This is rich and quality and most of all, it's what T wants most...it's all about him. Even if he can't understand it, it has pictures.

Sometimes we forget just how long Donald Trump has been running for President . He first admitted thinking about it in 1987. But Garry Trudeau has been featuring him his "Doonesbury" comic for at least 30 years. He's never been one of the main characters but has often been an adjunct character; the others play off him and the aura he gives off. Trudeau has usually featured him with the blonde/orange hair, but in recent years, the coif has become more exaggerated. He's also been written with an "edge" and an air of venality, seemingly absent from the other characters. "Duke", a reprehensible character (and my favorite, along with Honey) is written with a bit of humor, even when he's captaining Trump's yacht. Trump has not been so depicted and in the last few years, the venality has not been particularly funny.

Garry Trudeau has published a new book, "Yuge!", repeating the strips featuring Donald Trump. It's been released at a good time. Trudeau began "covering" Donald Trump in the late 1980's when he was prominent developer in New York City...and Garry Trudeau was a prominent cartoonist. Trump was married to Ivana and Garry was married to Jane. Flash forward 20 some odd years and Trump is married to Melania and Garry is still married to Jane. Trump did not like being mocked in print and said so, loudly. Trudeau continued to use Donald Trump as a character, much to Trump's annoyance. Trump tossed slams at Garry Trudeau and Graydon Carter of "Spy Magazine" in interviews. Later, "tweets" became Trump's means of fighting back at people he considered "unfair" to him.

Whether you're a supporter - or not - of Trump, the "Doonesbury" comics are a searing reminder of just who Donald Trump is. They should be read by everyone voting in November.

I've never been a Doonesbury fan, but wanted to see how Trump has been mocked historically. Are the attacks people make today because he's a Republican or have they been part and parcel of Trump's legacy.

The later. Mocking Trump for his sexist, brudish, racist, intollerant behavior has been around for decades! What I was not expecting were some of his other characteristics being highlighted:

Dec 7 1999 Trump "The Response to my candidacy out there has been incredible! Off the Charts! The Polls Are Unbelievable! Everybody Loves me here---Loves me! My hotel phone is rinning off the hook from MAJOR actresses MAJOR!"
Reporter: Any of them voters?
Trump: Who cares, they're HUGE, not Pamela Lee, but that ball park. {Side note: For those who don't know Pamela Lee Anderson was known for having several breast enlargement surguries.}

Dec 12, 2011 Trump: "A TOP poll, one of the most respected quality polls had this to say about the upcoming Trump Debate! You can't make this up. Amost 7% of Americans, basically losers, say they won't watch my debate. 14% 'aren't sure'. But get this, 79% say they 'won't be able to avert their eyes!' That's 79% people!

Dec 13, 2011 Trump: A lot of people --- Top Top important people --- ask ME, Mr Trump

Wow.

If I liked Doonesbury, I probably would have given this more star. The comics improved as it got closer to the current period---the issues were more current and you could see more of the Trump we know today in the jibes. The 80s were a different era... but still the running for President.

Yuge! 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump by G.B. Trudeau (Andrews McMeel Publishers 2016) (741.5973) (3395). I have followed Doonesbury since the 1970's; I have never found a more honest and prescient way to keep up with politics than through this comic strip. This is all the funnier, for Donald Trump hates Trudeau and Doonesbury. This Doonesbury collection is golden!

As Trudeau points out, “The Donald is not self-aware enough to recognize that he is the very definition of parody. To quote from G.B. Trudeau's preface, “Some people feel that Trump is beyond satire, but we professionals know that he is satire, pure and uncut, free for all to use and enjoy, and for that we are not ungrateful. For our country, though, we can only weep. Yuge! 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump, p.8.

The current title was published in July of 2016, so it contains none of Trudeau's strips since the Howling Yam was elected to his first public office. I can't wait for the next Trump-centric Doonesbury to hit the bookstores.

I purchased this PB volume in like-new condition from my local used book store on 9/20/19 for $6.00.

My rating: 7.25/10, finished 9/23/19 (3395). PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

It's pretty amazing (and sort of pathetic) that Donald Trump has been running for president for 30 years. And it's pretty amazing (and sort of incredible) that Trudeau recognized him from the start as a major figure worth satirizing.

With that said, the strips from the '80s, '90s, and '00s are a bit meh. We get funny jokes about opulence and adultery and the corruption and the wastefulness of the rich, but that's a pretty easy target. Maybe it would have been funnier when Trump was a big pop name in the '80s and '90s, but now it seems like low-hanging fruit.

The strip is pretty great from the '10s onward, though, when Trump (at last) successfully lurches up onto the serious(ish) political stage. From his early dalliances with the bigotry of birtherism to his full-blown fear and hatred on the campaign trail, Trump rants ... and is skewered by Trudeau's superb wit.

(And though I found the majority of this book less than Trudeau's usual brilliance, it's still great to have all these Trump strips in one place.)

I have been a fan of Doonesbury and G.B. Trudeau since the 1970s when the cartoon was first published. If you want to understand the history, politics, and culture of the past 45 years and you don't want to suffer through college courses or books in history, then skim through Doonesbury's cartoon strips. Yuge is a collection of Doonesbury's strips about Donald Trump from the past 30 years. As a caveat, please note that Trump is no fan of Trudeau's work. Trudeau skewers Trump as a businessman, self-professed icon, playboy, reality star, and now pseudo-politician. I enjoyed the book as it was very entertaining and funny.

Trudeau introduced his book with a defense and a warning..."You can't make this stuff up, so why try? Some people feel that Trump is beyond satire, but we professionals know he is satire, pure and uncut, free for all to use and enjoy, and for that we are not ungrateful. For our country, though we can only weep."

Agreed!

I'm not a fan of Doonesbury partly because I never liked the artwork and partly because I didn't always get the joke/point. Doonesbury was always more political than I cared to be.

I got Yuge from my local library because I can't stand Trump and wanted to read him being roasted. There were funny moments but not as many as I expected. Also, I felt the book was more horrifying than funny. To think this person is a real person and is going to potentially be the next POTUS is nearly incomprehensibly horrifying and unbelievable... I finished the book and was seriously depressed, anxious. It feels like we're on the edge of a cliff, teetering and nearly about to fall. This just wasn't a good for me. Maybe you have to take all the Trump mess less seriously or like Doonesbury more than I did but I wouldn't buy the book. Worth reading once and recommending to anti-Trumpites but that's it.

Growing up, Doonesbury was always the strip on the funnies that I skipped over. Politics and kids don't mix. But after "The election", I immediately ordered this and a couple of other Trump biographies as a kind of coping mechanism to cure my sadness. I was going into this blind, as I have never read Doonesbury and know nothing about the characters, etc. I did get some laughs out of this, and I did find a few pages that I felt compelled to show or read to others, but I wouldn't call it a laugh riot. Also, quite a few of the pages were very tangentially related to Trump, which felt a lot like padding the page numbers. My favourite gag was when some characters decided to try out "Trump: The Board Game". "First, let's place our markers on the space marked 'Start...life with $30 million'. " If that made you laugh, then you'll like a fair bit of this.

Heard about this book from Rachel Maddow's show. It is very funny, but scary at the same time. G B Trudeau featured Trump in his cartoon steps back in the 80's, but reading them today, they sound like they were taken from today's headlines. He captured Trump's persona early, and his comic strips featuring Trump nails him to the "T". Fun to read but thought provoking also

Prescient, amazing, funny and smart. Garry Trudeau nailed Trump YEARS ago. I wish other people had been paying as much attention.

So worth the price for many laugh out loud moments. This is my new coffee table book. And the fact that Trump is not a fan, is just like frosting to a cake. (snickering)
