So I finally finished Romain Rolland's tremendous roman-fleuve, the over 2,200 page story of the life of fictional musician Jean-Christophe Krafft that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1915. I read it in three parts, taking breaks in between to gather my thoughts and cleanse my palate on some other reading. I highly recommend that you undertake this novel in a similar fashion. You can read my reviews on the first two parts separately, but to summarize, I found both to be outstanding work, and the second part to be a five-star masterpiece. Though it continues the beautiful prose and thoughtful characterization typical of the first two acts, the last three volumes that comprises the third act were unfortunately not so grand, with the final volume (Volume X) being the biggest let-down which did not end the whole musical epic on a high note.

In Part I, we followed Jean-Christophe from his birth through his formative years. In Part II, we watch him grow from a hot-headed teenager into a more sensitive and wiser young man. He has been living as an exile from his home country of Germany in Paris, and has made a new friend in Olivier, the brother of a woman Christophe grew to love shortly before her untimely death. I expected Part III to follow these two characters until old age. It did not quite work out this way.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD... Instead of further developing Christophe and Olivier, both are placed somewhat in the background while Rolland introduces even MORE characters on which to focus. This novel was supposed to be realistic, and as such, I know that a person's life is often unrecognizable by the end compared to how they began. But when telling a cohesive narrative for entertainment, I do not consider it wise to introduce new characters to your readership or audience so late in the story. Olivier gets killed off at the end of Volume VIII and the focus is largely off Christophe for the remainder of the novel.

Now, anyone with the patience to have dedicated this much time to Jean-Christophe's life and tribulations through about 1900 pages thus far would find this insulting to say the least. Why did Rolland decide to turn his seemingly eternally prolific prose to telling further stories about people in whom the reader has had no previous investment? The reader is tired. The reader is ready to wrap this up with a nice finale. The reader did not need another 300 or more pages talking about a little hunchback boy who does not seem to ultimately add much to Christophe's story at all, or to Olivier's son, or to any of the half dozen others brought to our last minute attention. And we certainly didn't need the constant continued tangents about Rolland's cultural stereotypes about French, Italian, Swiss, and German peoples.

All of this diluted the impact of Christophe's final days, and this is a shame because I felt an epic story should have an epic ending. Perhaps the ending was appropriate, as not everyone goes out of this life with a bang.

There were other inconsistencies in the final volume, such as Rolland constantly inserting little footnotes or side thoughts in parentheses, or quoting untranslated Latin verses, that were not seen in the other nine and which were a little annoying. He also opened the final volume with a pretentious prologue that made no sense to me whatsoever.

In conclusion, the novel as a whole earns four stars. It is truly a beautiful work of art that captures the human soul in a way that still feels modern and fresh. Rolland's great novel deserved the Pulitzer, and also deserves a wider fanbase. I think one of the reasons for the limited appeal was this mediocre final volume that may lead the curious reader to be hesitant to invest so much of themselves for so long a time with seemingly such a feeble payoff. But like a trip down the river, and like life itself, it is the journey that counts. And I truly enjoyed the journey of Jean-Christophe, and I encourage you to experience it.

This book comprises the last 3 volumes of Jean-Christophe, also known as which refers to an extended sequence of novels of which the whole acts as a commentary for a society or an epoch, and which continually deals with a central character, community or a saga within a family.

Plot:
The central character, Jean-Christophe Krafft, is a German musician of Belgian extraction, a composer of genius whose life is depicted from cradle to grave. He undergoes great hardships and spiritual struggles, balancing his pride in his own talents with the necessity of earning a living and taking care of those around him. Tormented by injustices against his friends, forced to flee on several occasions as a result of his brushes with authority and his own conscience, he finally finds peace in a remote corner of Switzerland before returning in triumph to Paris a decade later.

According to John Cruickshank, ( "Rolland, Romain", in Anthony Thorlby (ed.), The Penguin Companion to Literature 2: European Literature. Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1969, p. 661), this novel brings "together his interests and ideals in the story of a German musical genius who makes France his second home and becomes a vehicle for Rolland's views on music, social matters and understanding between nations".

In terms of literary criticism, this novel can be considered as a , novel of formation, novel of education, or coming-of-age story (though it may also be known as a subset of the coming-of-age story) is a literary genre that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood (coming of age), and wherein character change therefore is extremely important.

Since this book was written in the period of 1904 to 1912, the author describes the European society just before World War I.

Romain Rolland was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915.

Some words from this book sink into my heart. But its sententious symbolism and occasionally cloying romanticism are hard to devour.
The author Romain Rolland was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1915 because he can write such sentimental men in his time. Personally, I think Rolland is a closeted gay man, and this novel should be classified as a secretly MM romance genre.

Het omvat drie boeken: 鈥淒e Vriendinnen鈥 (uit 1910), 鈥淗et Brandende Braambos鈥 (1911) en 鈥淒e Nieuwe Dag鈥 (1912).

鈥淛aren gaan voorbij. 鈥 (p.357)

Flawed - this volume (written c1910) is set from 1910-1930 and obviously has nothing about WW1 or any other changes, written as if Europe was the same from 1910-1930.

It is not so clear of how Christophe made it through his existential crisis..
