Behavioral Issues in Horses: Why Do They Do That?

Rate this book
"Behavioral Issues in Why Do They Do That?" is a valuable resource for anyone who has experienced the fear or frustration of their horse exhibiting dangerous/undesirable behaviors. Through personal accounts that are both entertaining and educational, author and horse trainer Nicole Brickner covers the most common behavioral issues horses develop, including bucking, kicking, rearing, biting, bolting, and more. She begins by describing natural horse behavior and why horses behave the way they do, and then explains how we can use this knowledge to work with a horse on a level it can understand. Next, she explores the possible physical, behavioral, and emotional causes of the various behaviors, and explains how the solution to a particular behavior can be very different depending on which of those possible causes is the root of the issue. In this unique approach, the root causes are recognized as originating from either physical (pain, hunger, etc.), behavioral (choice, conditioning, habit), or emotional (fear, anger, instinct) sources. Depending on which of these triggers is causing the issue, the path to resolving the behavior is very different. Finally, Nicole explains how to address the various behaviors, with dozens of stories based on her own experiences that illustrate solutions to each behavior, for each possible root cause. If there are horses in your life, you’ll enjoy the insights and adventures in "Behavioral Issues in Why Do They Do That?" About the Author Nicole Brickner has worked with, trained and shown horses from an early age. She graduated from UW River Falls in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with an equine emphasis. I have always loved horses. As a child I would do reports on them and although I've never been in a place to be able to really get involved with them, I still have maintained my curiosity

This book let me in on things one can't find in an encyclopedia. It talked about common behavioural issues that get mentioned in books and shown on television but don't usually get explained (for obvious reasons).

What I especially loved was the easy to follow format of the book. It was not only broken down with chapters focused on certain types of behaviours, but it was explained using various real life examples in the form of a story rather than just an explanation that would threaten to cause my eyes to glaze over.

Overall, it was as easy to relate to the author and horses as it was intriguing and informative. Very well done.

Great information for both the novice or professional equine owner on behaviours and remedies. I've had equines for over 40 years and learned or relearned a great deal from this author

Really great information on why horses act or react in certain circumstances. A very insightful read, with first hand experiences from the point of view of the handler as well as the horse. Great thoughts on how to work through some issues with common sense, patients and good riding.

Thought Provoking

This book was a lot deeper than I expected. It really made me think, both about things that I leaned towards naturally with horses and other training methods that I have seen. Her view of horses is wonderfully told and to me, just makes sense.

Nothing new here

If you are familiar with pressure and release training, nothing new here. If you are looking for a different option because traditional training isn't working, you won't find it here.

Just what the doctor (vet) ordered

Outstanding. Felt it was written just for me at a time I am going through behavioral issues with my horse. I can see that I have created these and realize that my feeling of abandonment comes from the loss of my bond with my horse. I pray I can get it back.
