Fairy tale endings weren’t made for people like me. Happy for now usually ain’t in the cards, either.

The dents on my wall from where my headboard kept knockin against the same spot was the first clue that I needed to calm my ass down. At the rate I was racking up notches and plowing through hookups, I wasn’t ever gonna find nothing real. Guess I kinda jinxed myself. I created my circumstances. You can’t get what you want if you keep falling back into the same pattern of bad habits. But then things changed. I stumbled onto somethin I never in a million years expected to happen. You gotta understand, I’m never the guy who wins. It was supposed to be just sex, but that shifty, rhyming and scheming bastard, Cupid, pulled a fast one.

I may have changed some stuff to protect a couple of people. But before you go believing the tabloids, make sure you understand that you’re gettin the lowdown straight from the source.

I needed to get this off my chest and it’s only fair that you at least get my side of it all. At some point, I might regret telling you any of this, but for now, you need to know.

*Disclaimer* This is a novella. Not a short story, novelette, or novel. This tale features an M/M pairing. If gay erotica/erotic romance is not your cup of tea and you are offended by same-sex relationships or crass language, you should bypass this story. Content is intended for a mature audience, 18+.

Complexity is the fourth installment in The Kinky Connect Chronicles. The Kinky Connect Chronicles are short erotic stories/novelettes all wrapped up in neat little bows. These stories are standalones. No cliffhangers in the lot!

Thanks for visiting my little slice of ŷ heaven!

This is the part where I provide readers with a little background info about moi. Here it goes...

Harper Miller is a native New Yorker who pens love stories that occasionally merge the sentimental and provocative. She’s traveled the world and lived in a variety of places but always finds her way back to the Big Apple. A lackluster love life leaves time to explore new interests; for Harper, it is writing romance.

She’s a former member of the Romance Writers of America, serving for two years on the board of the New York City chapter as Vice President of Communications. She’s served as an Associate Editor and columnist for the Pink Heart Society a monthly online magazine for readers and writers of books with lots of heart. Harper is also one of the co-creators of the

When she isn’t writing, Harper utilizes her graduate degree in the field of medical research. She enjoys pop culture trivia, fitness-related activities, drinking copious amounts of wine, and going on bad dates.

Why romance? Hmm, well, I write because I see stories as mini-movies playing in my head, and I’m crazy sappy. I’m the type of woman who watches the Hallmark channel with a box of Kleenex on standby. Friends to lovers trope FTW! I also write because we need more PoC & LGBTQIA+ persons front and center as main characters in romance. Representation matters!

Docking and pigeon peas!

I had to google one. I'll let you guess which. *exaggerated wink*

Manny is the narrator of this novella. Manny is a bisexual, Puerto Rican, personal trainer, struggling to make ends meet in New York who likes sex. A lot. He isn't picky about gender or how many people are getting served at a time and he's model hot, so... there's not exactly a shortage of people in the greater NYC area willing to climb into his bed or a bathroom stall or the gym... you get me. I'm actually wondering if underwear doesn't just disintegrate when one gets within a certain distance of Manny. Like the sun. Only for underwear.

Being inside Manny's head... was an experience. I couldn't say whether or not his voice is authentic being neither Puerto Rican nor from New York, but he holds no punches and his verbiage made me cackle, I'll say that. Many of his reactions I didn't understand. He'd get pissed in a nanosecond but I was still at the starting gate trying to figure out why, but the characterization is consistent. Consistently had me scratching my head but consistent nonetheless.

More often than not he explains himself and it mostly boils down to him getting bent over something I wouldn't ever think to, some of which may be cultural, others of which are probably gender, all of which held my interest mainly because I don't get in a bind about much. He's like a fucken rubik's cube and puzzles are in my wheelhouse. Occupational hazard.

Anywhat.

Manny's thirsty one night, alters his profile on the kinky site where he's a member to reflect his desire for cock and through a series of events meets Chris.

Chris is a pretty well known TV star and DEEP in the closet. They have chemistry in that fuck and fight way but the closetedness becomes an issue after they've been together about 6 mos.

The way the story is put together worked for me. I like flashing back to their first meeting but then there is a big time jump where Manny fell in love with Chris. I have trouble with the 'take my word for it they're in love' gambit. I like to see it and feel it for myself, and while I understand that's a tall order within the span of a novella, I still think the relationship could've been better developed.

The way Chris and Manny interact speaks to their chemistry and David seems to be able to decipher Manny, so in that sense it's clear they have a connection. Do I think they'll have longevity? Eh. Maybe?

The sex is medium hotness with some dirty talk, bossiness and the aforementioned docking. I know it says "kinky" in the series title and they meet on a "kinky" website but... can we just agree to disagree?

Manny's family dinner scene was one of the things I liked best about this story. The support they give him is heartwarming. The ending is both tiddy and surprising. It definitely leaves the possibility of a sequel but doesn't leave you dangling from a cliff.

Recommend to MM erotica fans.

4 stars!

My first thought after reading was, awww.
I quite enjoyed the story of Manny, the go getter personal trainer and Chris, the rising star, firmly in the closet actor.
Harper Miller definitely knows how to do a lot with little. With just a little paragraph here or there, characters are made, fully fleshed out and vivid, Joulie, Titi Lucia, Aimee. The book is told from Manny's POV, and his character is built up especially strong, he's leaps from the page and burrows his way into your heart.

Likes
-the characters
-hot smex, it was definitely scorching.
-Manny's bisexual, and that's something you seldom see.
-I liked the vibe between Chris and Manny.

Dislikes
-I didn't get as much as a look into Chris as I would have liked.

Also, when reading, don't forget to go to the website : kinkysinglesconnect.com for the epilogue!

Would I recommend this? Of course, if it's written by Ms. Miller it's bound to be good.

Would I read this again? Most certainly!

In my very first review of Harper’s work ( ), I called her fearless. She took a big chance with the voice of her characters in that book. I thought she pulled it off pretty damn well. I also said she’d be an author to watch. At the time I meant that as a first book it was pretty fuckin awesome, and I couldn’t wait to see where she went from there.

Here we are, the FIFTH book of hers I’ve read, the FOURTH in a dirty, kinky series of novelettes and novellas, and HOT DAMN.

I was right about Harper. I’ve got two reasons.

1.) Her writing, which was pretty spectacular to begin with is growing, sharpening, becoming more honed.

2.) She’s still fearless. With each of the books in The Kinky Connect Chronicles, Harper is going places other authors might fear to tread when it comes to arcs and characters we usually see introduced in a series. She’s pushing the boundaries of what readers might expect by busting right on through with the stories she wants to write. Not only is she giving readers a variety of kinky kinks, but she's also mixing up different ethnicities and sexualities of the characters. I FREAKING LOVE THAT. This world, y’all, it’s everybody. EV-REE-BOD-DEE. And they’re found in these books.

LOVE IS LOVE IS LOVE IS LOVE. You can’t paint that canvas with only one color or one brush.

Complexity is Harper’s first foray into M/M. And I’m so, so, so excited she took this step. Really…when I found out about this book, I let out an uncharacteristic whoop of joy. I’m hoping with all my hope she keeps at it.

Keeping with the theme of the seriesthis installment goes from the online connection of Manny and Chris and steps into their real-life relationship.

Manny is bisexual, semi-closeted, generally looking for flings with established couples but would like to find an authentic connection though he’s convinced love-everlasting won’t happen for him.

Chris has secrets. He’s also closeted, deeply, for Reasons and super hesitant to provide any personal details. He’s not in a position to offer a partner anything more than casual on his terms.

Manny and Chris together are on fire together despite a rocky face-to-face start that’s full of surprises. Manny’s bossy and just what Chris is looking for in the bedroom. Their combustion sparks a night neither will soon forget and leaves them wanting more.

Through some strains of miscommunication, a lot of Manny’s inner monologue, and fears of being vulnerable, their relationship is kept to a relatively simple friends-with-benefits affair. Until

Yeah…I’m not giving it all away. I’ll just say there were some beautiful surprises and grand gestures that melted me into a pile of goo.

There’s a lot to like here. Complex, flawed characters, a realness to emotions and fears, and undeniable attraction. This was definitely a couple I wanted to root for through their HEA.

Before I go.I’ve gotta mention these covers. All of them in this series. MY GOD THESE COVERS. Every one of them is spot on gorgeousness. Hats off to Taria A. Reed.

**Be on the lookout. Harper will be visiting Back Porch Reader on July 13th with a Guest Post on her blog tour. You won’t want to miss it.

Jen's Review

OMG This book! I just finished it and I have to say my heart is pounding. I want to jump up and down and scream. Like seriously Harper Miller??? OMG.. That ending.. I just can’t even with that.

I’m not really sure where to start or what to say. This author is new to me and I have not read the other books in the series. From my understanding (don’t quote me on this) but I believe this is Harper’s first m/m. Well let me tell you this author did a fabulous job on this story and I hope she considers writing a whole lot more. This story was a fast read but this author didn’t skimp on the details or the emotions. It really packed a punch.

The characters felt real and down to earth and I loved that they weren’t perfect. Manny and Chris are living their lives in the closest. Wanting to get off, not wanting anything serious, no strings attached, Manny and Chris connect online. What happens next is the start of something that took me on a bit of an emotional ride. Sparks fly, clothes come off and we get to witness some incredibly hot scenes.

At first I wasn’t sure about Manny. He comes off as a bit of a selfish dick. I found him to be somewhat standoffish but as the story progressed I really started to understand him. Being that he was all about just having sex and not interested in having a relationship, I was really routing for him to finally find his person. As for Chris I really liked him right away. Even though he was a natural submissive he wasn’t afraid to call Manny out on his crap. I did however want to throttle him at one point. Their relationship is definitely not easy especially because they come from different worlds. Shit gets real when feelings get involved.

I can never have this man. This beautiful fucking man who makes me happy. Makes me feel good with just a smile. I can never have him.

My sexuality has never been an issue, but now I got questions and feelings and fuckin feelings about feelings, man.

For the first time, I realize that love is one cruel-ass joke. It makes you believe that anything is possible.

Love is a goddamn lie.

I really love how this story was told. It starts out in the present right in the middle of some conflict but I love that we are brought back into the past and could see how everything evolved from the beginning. My only complaint is there were a few times where I didn’t understand some of the things Manny was saying. I don’t understand any Spanish so I wish there had been a glossary of some sort. I think that would have helped me. Of course the selfish part of me wishes the story had been a lot longer. I really felt like I was connected to the characters. I was invested in their story and I honestly didn’t want it to end. These guys felt authentic and the sex between them was hot as hell. I really hope we see more of them because ya That ending I have to have more.

I love Harper Miller’s writing style! Manny’s mannerisms and language lingo made this story so easy to get lost in, it was fluent, well researched and written.

It was unique in that it was from Manny’s POV and that it was like he was telling a story as in a journal. Manny is a bisexual manwhore, only ‘out to his mother and aunt, not even to his little brother. Trolling for hookups online, he has specific physical and kinky requirements. When user ‘Tightass247 responds with all of the necessary assets, he indulges in an online chat session to get to know him a bit better, which he has never done in the past. They agree to meet at a swanky hotel. That is when he meets Chris, a very much closeted, well known actor who doesn't want his sexuality to come out for fear of damaging his blossoming career. What ensues is a night neither of them can forget and starts a 6 month long steamy, hot affair, albeit in secret.

With a twinkle in his eyes, he hurriedly obeyed my command. Still the good little sub despite being pissy. The fact that he liked being told what to do could work to my advantage. If he wanted a “beefy Dominant he was gonna get what he asked for.

“The guy that Manny’s been giving hot sausage injections to is Chris Kaine. Dude on that show Blue Law on MFN!

But Ms. Harper has a surprise for them and makes the reader wonder what will happen next! When the ‘L word is introduced into their intense relationship, what happens? I was blown away by the ending and left hanging by my very well manicured toenails! Ms. Harper, I am guaranteeing your readers will revolt if we don't get a sequel soon!

This book was absolutely amazing.
Just wow!

*An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*

"Complexity" The Kinky Chronicles book Four by Harper Miller was such a great book! I was absolutely engrossed from the first page and I hated that it was so short! Only 95 pages. "Complexity" is part of The Kinky Chronicles series but I personally found the romance in this novella intense rather than kinky. The relationship was believable as well as heartbreaking and tear inducing. This novella tells a story of love and the many obstacles that stood in the way of these two absolutely beautiful and "real" men. They had passion and problems and I was rooting for their HEA. Manny and Chris....<3<3<3

I'm gonna say it over and over; I loved these guys so much! I believed every word of this story; there was no "fluff" here. Nope. None at all. My heart just swelled for Manny and Chris. I worried, I cried, I was afraid for them but at the end I did smile. Big, goofy smile. Yeah and I felt like crying again too but they were happy so I was too.

Manny is a personal trainer just trying to make ends meet and save enough to open his own gym. Manny is bisexual and extremely sexually active. He hasn't been in love or had any luck with relationships. But he wants those things. Manny is thirty-five and has little hope of finding his HEA. I felt so sad for Manny because he believed he would never find love. Yes, he had the love of his family: his mom, grandmother and brother Juan. Not many people knew Manny was a bisexual, just his mom and his grandmother along with a small handful of friends. Manny was afraid to tell Juan, of what his brother would think of him.

Chris was almost the complete opposite of Manny. Not only was Christ blond-haired, blue-eyed and gorgeous, he was a famous Hollywood actor. Chris was a 100% closeted homosexual. I felt so sad for him. His fear of anyone finding out was real. He was afraid he would ruin his career, his life. And he was willing to sacrifice love for it.

Manny and Chris meet on Kinkysinglesconnect.com, where they arrange to meet discreetly at a hotel for a drink. Neither knew what the other looked like. At least not their faces. When Manny walks into the hotel room and sees Chris for the fist time and recognizes his hook-up as Christopher Kaine the celebrity, he is angry. At first he thinks it's a joke and Chris insists it isn't. Manny thinks it's a very bad idea to get involved with Chris in a "secret" relationship. Manny worries this could be a situation where he ends up with a broken heart. I won't say he doesn't. Their journey to love is tough. These two were complex characters; the diversity between their background and lives was real. The dialogue between them was believable and I felt a connection with each one of them. Of course I would; I was rooting for them from page one! While reading, I could believe I was in the room with them. I felt their pain and fear. I felt their doubts and desires. And I was so thrilled with their HEA! It was a little predictable but I wouldn't have it any other way. Despite the "kinky" in the series title, I didn't feeling this book was smutty or dirty. Their feelings for each other was intense from the beginning, even before they fell in love. It was beautiful! This author has such a talent for pulling you in.

This was my first book by Harper Miller and I will definitely read more from her! There are a lot of different ratings for this book but for me it had all the "feels." If I could give more than 5 Stars, I would.

Oh...don't forget to go online to read the epilogue. This story was written in Manny's POV, but we hear from Chris in the epilogue.

For her first time venturing into the M/M romance arena, I thought Harper Miller did a really great job! The characters really made this story for me, both Manny and Christopher had excellent depth, with interesting backstories and the unconventional way they meet (considering who Christopher is...which if you want to know you have to read it, no spoiling here ;-) ).

Manny is a strong, independent man building his own business while searching for someone special, even if he has to navigate online hookup sites to do so. He's tough yet still shows great capability to feel, even if he's a bit rough around the edges. Christopher has a high profile job that leads him to be extremely cautious in how he hooks up with others, and he longs for a connection while still having to play things safe. When the two of them meet, sparks fly (and not just in the naughty way). They are undeniably hot together, but there are other variables in play that keep their road bumpy and unclear.

The story is told from Manny's point of view, right down to the way he speaks and thinks. It's a unique way to read a story, and puts you into his head so you come to really feel his emotions. At the end, things are left wide open and I was desperate to find out what happened after that final scene...so I was instantly relieved when there was a link at the end of the book to Manny and Christopher's epilogue, which does help tie things up for the reader.

I was very pleased with how this story turned out, and I hope that the author intends to write more M/M romance in the future--based on Complexity, I'd say Harper Miller will do really well in this genre. For me, this was a 4.5-star read, and I'd definitely recommend it to M/M romance fans 18+ (for adult language and M/M sexual content).

I can't get enough of 's Kinky Connect Chronicles where people meet online and hook up. takes an intricate look at not only being gay, but being involved as an interracial couple and a couple that is financially disproportionate.

This book gets complex really quick. The main characters, Puerto Rican born and personal trainer Emmanuel "Manny" Acosta and Caucasian high profile actor Christopher Kaine have a lot at stake if the world knew they were a couple however some members of Manny's family knew he was bisexual whereas no one knew Christopher was gay which later would cause a problem for Manny which is like the pot calling the kettle black.

I liked the different layers brought out and how the storyline allowed the characters to discover themselves. When fear is put aside a whole new world is opened up and possiblies are explored and I felt this is what happened for Chris.

is a look at truths, sacrifices, and wants. This book gets 4.5 I love you stars

My Complexity Review . . .

This novella started off a bit slow for me and Manny took awhile for me to like him, but the more I read the more he grew on me. It was his direct approach that threw me off at times but its also part of his charm as well.

While reading the chapters felt long the way it was set up. It first starts with Manny and Chris having a miscommunication in their relationship then it jumps to how they met, then immediately jumps back to where they left off on in the beginning which threw me a bit and recollect what was happening in the story.

I liked Manny & Chris's story and how it all unfolded minus the confusing bits.

"The guy that Manny's been giving hot sausage injections to is Chris Kaine. . . ."

Normally novellas go too quick for me but this one didn't, if anything it felt too long in some parts. Since it was a novella I don't want to say too much giving the whole story away but it was kinky sweet. The story ends with a tiny cliff hanger of what if, so make sure to read the authors note so you can find the code to Manny and Chris's hfn.

What starts as kinky ends up finishing sugary sweet. This was my first Harper Miller story but won't be my last. Even though this novella is considered 4th within this series I didn't feel like I missed anything just picking up this story. When the book angels give me more time to read then I would definitely pick up another book/novella from this series and this author.

Manny is a bisexual man, striving for success as a personal trainer. He grew up poor, with a loving single mother and a brother he helped to raise. He has struggled to maintain romantic relationships, and at the outset of the story seems to have all but given up on them. Part of the problem is that he is still mostly closeted about his sexuality, which keeps an emotional distance between him and the women he has tried to build relationships with in the past. He has never considered a relationship with a man, but when he meets Christopher, a closeted, gay actor on a well-known TV show, he begins to question the reasons for this reticence. Their relationship begins as a friends with benefits set up, but feelings soon develop, which Manny believes are completely one-sided.

This is Harper Miller’s first foray into M/M, and before I go any further, I want to give her major credit for some hot, hot, hot sex scenes. The sexual chemistry between the couple came across beautifully.

The novella opens in the present, then shifts to the day the two men first met. I liked this conceit, and was interested to watch the development of their relationship. Disappointingly, it quickly shifts back to the present time before we get to see much of how they got to where they are now. Instead, we get some of that information in a less satisfying way, through Manny’s internal monologue.

Manny is prickly, hyper-masculine, and prone to defensiveness. He has some very strong opinions on the types of men he’s attracted to, and what he wants from them. Christopher’s vulnerability is a nice contrast to this, which would have been an interesting dynamic to explore a little more deeply. Manny definitely has a clear narrative voice, which at times comes across as arrogant and somewhat irrational. The story would have benefitted greatly from a clearer picture of who Chris is, and why he loves Manny so much. Rather than just hearing that Manny’s feelings deepened over time, it would have been good to see at least a scene or two to illustrate it.

Most of the conflict in this story could have been cleared up with some better communication--any communication--between the couple, and the rest of it with a little bit of understanding. To a certain point, this makes sense in the context of Manny’s personality. He isn’t a person who is willing to give anyone else the benefit of the doubt, or to allow himself to be vulnerable. It makes the reasons for his past relationship problems pretty obvious, but also makes it unclear as to how this one will be any different.

I enjoyed the setting and the worlds-colliding aspect of the relationship. If the author writes anything else with these two, I will definitely give it a chance. I’d love to see them interacting with each other’s friends and family. I think that would be interesting, and would give us more insight into their relationship. I’d also love to see them expanding and exploring their sexual relationship a little more, because it’s one of the highlights of this novella.

A review.

While this is definitely a romance book, I was charmed and a bit taken aback by how little the flow sticks to your typical boy-meets-boy structure.

The “charmed comes from Miller doing a bang-up job portraying Manny. As the narrator of the story, the flavor of his vernacular colors every word. The colloquial English, the inclusion of his Puerto Rican Spanish, and the fact that Miller (through Manny) brilliantly addresses what it’s like to live with stereotypes based on how you speak were brilliant. As far as action goes, I also liked the set up where we start at the present (Manny realizing he loves Christopher and has to break it off) then go back to see how they got together before returning to the present break up. The story also ends on what’s possibly the best not-cliffhanger cliffhanger (and if that word scares you, fear not: Harper Miller has an epilogue that is available for readers of the book to access on her website!).

The “taken aback comes from my own biases about what I expect when I pick up an m/m romance. Namely, that both characters will be equally developed or at least get equal page time (barring something in the plot that obviously prevents this). What I mean is, even if the two MCs are separated in space/time or in the midst of a breakup or whatever, I’m still conditioned to think we’ll get a chapter with MC1, a chapter with MC2 or a “meanwhile, the other guy is doing this… or some form of details about what’s happening with the other guy. In Complexity, not so much. If you only read the book as delivered without the epilogue, I definitely got the feeling that Christopher gets the short end of the on-page-time stick. This is bothersome/brilliant because, hey, maybe Manny is 110% justified in kicking Christopher to the curb despite the fireworks while fornicating, right?

Emmanuel "Manny" Acosta is working hard to make a name for himself in the Physical Training world. With dreams of owning his own gym and catering to high-end clients, he's well on his way.

A night on kinkysinglesconnect.com to set up a discreet hookup leads Manny to a secret rendezvous at a luxury hotel in the city. To his surprise, the man waiting for him is famous actor Christopher Kaine. Unable to believe this isn't some kind of joke, Manny is ready to leave, only Chris is determined to do what they set out to do.

Can a night that was meant to be no strings turn into something more? And what happens when emotions start to get in the way? Will either of these two be able to step out of the closet without losing everything they've worked for?

This is a hard one for me to review because while the writing was great and the story well done, I really didn't care for the characters. Manny was a bit too rough for me, a tad too crass and way too focused on sex. I started to like him more as the story went on, but I never fully connected with him. He just was not my favorite. As for Chris, since we didn't get his POV, I had a hard time knowing who he really was. I found him to be selfish (until the very end) and cocky.

While the sex was hot and they definitely had chemistry between the sheets, it was hard to see how they connected as a whole. The story was either sex or a look at Manny's life outside of Chris. I wanted more of them actually talking to one another.

Now this is my first book by Harper Miller, but I have to say the writing was very well done. There are other stories in the Kinky Connect Chronicles and I will definitely check them out. So if you are familiar with the series and you enjoy MM, check out Complexity.

4 Platypires for Complexity by Harper Miller

This is a stand-alone book in the Kinky Connect Chronicles but after reading the other 3, I just had to read this one. Now, normally I don't read a lot of m/m erotica romance. Not that I have anything against them, I just prefer a different kinda kink. lol.
Complexity is actually a novella and not a short story like the others which made me happy. I liked how the longer length made for more character development. Plus those very sexy scenes and the drama made for a really good read.
The diversity and the dialogue was on point. I felt a connection with Manny and could relate to his background. Especially in regards to balancing being a professional and your "hood" tendencies. I thought he was a well rounded character and couldn't help but root for him.
Overall, I really liked Complexity and can't wait to read more from Harper Miller. I would recommend this novella for other to read.

I received an ARC for a honest review.

I gave this book 4 stars!

This is a very short, emotional, love story and can be devour in just a couple of hours. Chris and Manuel find each other on a website. After talking online they decide to meet, but what Manuel was expecting wasn't what he gets when he meets Chris. Chris is a big time movie star and is in the closet. Can these two find away to love and live in the public eye or will Chris choose his career over love?

This book is stand alone but it could have just a little more to know truly if Chris and Manuel future held. Over all very good M/M book.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book which I have read from this author, and it will not be the last. This is her first venture into m/m relationships. This is a short read, but enjoyable.
The two characters Manny and Chris come from totally different backgrounds and professions. These are two complex and great characters. Would like to see more from these two in future.

A short hot little read. The characters Manny and Chris are great characters and the story line held my attention. My only complaint about it would be how it ends but even with that its a good short read. Will definitely be checking into more books by this author.

This book took me by surprise. I don't typically read this type of book, but with that said from page 1 until the very end I was held captive by this book. It was so many different things... raw, sexy and emotional. I enjoyed every word and look forward to reading more in by this author.

*I was provided a copy of Complexity by the author in exchange for an honest review. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*

Personal trainer Manny is always up for a good time. Doesn’t matter if it’s with a woman or a man. He’s secure in his sexuality and enjoys the no-strings sex he can get from the kinky website where he’s a member. But when Chris comes along, everything changes. Manny develops feelings he wasn’t looking for. Even if Chris feels the same, an open relationship between the two is impossible due to Chris life in the spotlight.

Complexity is book 4 in the Kinky Connect Chronicles, which features kinky standalone novellas with interracial couples. Each story is told as a confession of one of the Kinky Connect members, providing the reader with character-driven narration rather than the watered-down version found in typical fiction. This story is no exception with Manny’s slang and Hispanic phrases. As with all of the stories in this series, it’s well-written and enjoyable.

Beyond the method of the telling of the story, I liked both main characters and could understand their positions but had a bit of a difficult time grasping and accepting the conflict between them. Manny lamented about wanting to find his Lego piece (a metaphor I appreciated), and then he was upset with the situation when he actually did fall in love. I understand that the length of the story didn’t allow for much development, yet still felt something was missing that would have allowed me to connect more with the relationship. Manny’s anger at Chris for not telling him who he really was up front didn’t resonate with me either. They met through a website, so it was unlikely for either of them to spill their secrets before meeting in person.

Overall, it was an enjoyable tale with a unique style. Ms. Miller will keep me coming back for more with stories like this.

I really enjoyed this novella. The writing was immersive and the author did a great job of giving her characters a voice - Manny especially, who is our POV narrator. This is a fast read, around 95-100 pages, but tells a complete story. There's a little time jump - the first chapter picks up present day, while chapters 2 and 3 flash back to when Manny and Chris met - and I loved the way that allowed us to jump right into the story. It was a super effective way of writing in this shorter format so we didn't have to waste pages on unnecessary story building.

My only complaint? The story ends abruptly on a cliffhanger. There is an epilogue on the author's website, though you'll need to read the author's note for info on how to access it. I appreciate the epilogue being made available but didn't like that the published, purchased story wasn't complete. Especially when authors notes are sometimes overlooked. Don't overlook this one!

I love Manny's honesty about himself, his life, and his identities. As a narrator, he isn't trying to sugar coat anything about being a bisexual latino in today's environment. I really enjoyed his perspective and the glimpse into what he is tackling.

I liked the whole development of Chris and Manny though I do wish we saw more about those late night talks - I know Chris is a sap but I would've loved more glimpses at it as they got to know each other. I think Manny and Chris have a great dynamic though and would have loved to read so much more of their development!! I'm definitely going to check out more of the novellas in the kinky connect chronicles now!!

Defining Moments!

This quick read packs a powerful punch!

Emmanuel ‘Manny Acosta has come to terms with who he is and is sick of labels. Is he Hispanic or Latino? Does it matter? Is he bi or gay? He likes women and men…who cares? But Manny knows unfortunately, people do care, and he has come out only to a very few people closest to him. Considering his culture, neighborhood, and even his line of work, life could be very different for Manny if more people knew, and not in a good way.

But Manny is getting tired of quick, meaningless, nameless hookups. Well past thirty, most of his friends are busy ‘adulting with families. A personal trainer, Manny is working towards his dream of owning a gym. But he’s still alone. Although he doesn’t believe it’s in the cards for him, Manny is looking for his LEGO that one person meant for him, to stick with him no matter what.

What begins as a simple internet hookup leads Manny to Chris, and drama he doesn’t want, a relationship he doesn’t think he can handle…and a man he wants more than anything. Manny pulls away after a misunderstanding. When Chris confronts him, the two men make up and admit their true feelings for each other. Manny is settling into what feels like happiness, when he’s gob smacked by one more admission from Chris. While Manny is ‘partially out, Chris isn’t out at all and doesn’t intend to change that. Having to choose between Manny and his career, Chris walks away, and Manny is devastated.

I loved, loved, loved Manny! He had such a gritty, honest feel. He didn’t mince words or pretty things up. He was honest to a fault, especially about himself and who he was. When he called himself an ‘emotional retard I LITERALLY laughed out loud and almost dropped my Kindle. Manny has several moments like that during the story. He’s deep in thought or in a conversation with someone else, and the things that come out of his mouth!!! LOL! Priceless! Manny’s pain and frustration are also more than evident, and as he hurts and tries to navigate through his anguish, I was right there with him, virtually patting him on the back saying, “Aye Papi! Va a estar bien!

I had ‘some sympathy for Chris. I can’t imagine having to live as he did, but after a while, I was looking for the exit his self-pity party was working every nerve I had. I was in total agreement with Manny that Chris concerns were for Chris…period. But there’s comeuppance for every cynic, and Chris gave me mine…and sat me in the corner…when he showed exactly what he was made of. I always try to stay away from spoilers, so let’s just say this story has the BEST GRAND ROMANTIC GESTURE I’ve read in ANY romance in YEARS! Kudos to the author for “bringing it!

This is a definite must-read for anyone who loves the journey to love.

Enjoy!

Manny is a trainer making a decent living. Between working at the gym and building his own client list, he doesn’t have time for a relationship. Truth be told, he doesn’t want one. He enjoys the freedom of one-night stands and multiple hook ups. On one particular night, he chooses to update his profile in Kinkysingles.com to fit his ever-evolving sexual needs. The initial men who contacted him were not worth his time, but when “Vinnie messaged him all bets were off.

“Vinnie, also known as Chris needed to keep his sexuality hidden. As a popular actor, he was concerned about the hit his career would take if anyone found out. He was looking for something discreet and liked the profile he saw. He decided to set something up with Manny, but what they didn’t expect was the relationship that would result.

I really enjoyed this story. For its short length, it touched on so many themes that I didn’t expect. Manny was a bisexual tough guy Latino man from the neighborhood and he kept a portion of his sexuality hidden. Manny was in no way afraid to speak his mind and never apologized for who he was for the most part, but still had to keep parts under wraps. I loved that the author didn’t shy away from writing about what type of person he had to pretend to be based on his ethnicity and neighborhood. I really felt for Chris. He has so much pressure in his life that it’s a wonder he kept it together for so long. Things come to a head and feelings get hurt. The ending made my jaw drop and I was like what the heck! And then I kept reading and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Five stars!

Loved that this M/M story was told from a limelight story. It always made me wonder how many famous stars have to hide behind the truth in the public world. While wrong, it is what society is.

Manny is bi and while his family is understanding, in the work world he has to keep this on the down low. While reading the story you will see phrases he speaks that you may not understand, but the author does an awesome job at the end of book listing the word he spoke and what the meaning was so it made sense to those who don't understand that language.

Chris is hot and I so keep wondering what famous star this would most portray in the real world. haha. He is an actor and well known in the pappo land so he has to hide his true colors of being gay.

What these boys (shall I say men though) thought would be a one time thing, turned into so much more than they both bargained for. The struggles that they had to face is something that we know the real world society has to face as well. The sex is hot and I became very educated on some things I never knew about and can say that M/M may be hotter then the normal gender couples.

Inquiring minds what to know what happens between Manny and Chris after the award show speech and what the outcome of that speech lead to with the publicity world. Need to get my hands on that follow up story to read this. Good short story especially if you like M/M stories.

I will never look at LEGOS the same again after reading this book.

Complexity. Never has a title better fit a story. Harper Miller hits the ground running and never stops in this spunky contemporary romance, introducing deep, complex characters who quickly find themselves in endlessly complicated situations. What starts out as a simple quest for a hookup leads to a complicated maze of twists and turns resulting in a lot of heartache and introspection. It's been a while since I've lost myself in a novella as quickly and wholly as I did this time, but there's something compelling about Manny's story.

Manny's a hard-working guy with hopes and dreams of owning his own private training facility. His genuine, likable character comes through in just about everything he does, and when he meets someone with the potential for more than just the usual hookup, it's tough not to be hopeful. He's juggling cultural, financial and sexual struggles - a lot for any one person to manage - and it's really hard not to root for his success and acceptance.

Miller takes us on an emotional and sexual journey that may not be quite as kinky as the series name implies. While there're plenty of sexy, erotic encounters, much of the kink is implied or off-screen. If you're looking for a short, satisfying read with equal parts sex and substance, Complexity is sure to please. My only question is what's up with that ending? I'm dying here...I need more. :)

M/M fans you will love this short, heart warming story about two different worlds colliding and letting love lead the way.

Manny is a spit-fire Puerto Rican American who is also bi. He doesn't share his preferences publicly but has the his Mother's support. Manny is from the hood and is working hard to get ahead and grow his business. He also has desires that he seeks out online. After updating his online profile and a chatting for a while he makes plans to meet 'Vinny'. To his surprise the person on the end of the mouse was none other than Christopher Kaine, TV actor.

Christopher Kaine is in the closet. He's scared to come out because his career is going well. He doesn't want to be pigeonholed. When things get hot and heavy with Manny can Chris take it to the next level or will he choose his career?

Manny is intense, gritty, a hot blooded man who has found his LEGO piece.

"LEGO pieces have staying power. They're the ride-or-die toy. Once they snap in, it takes hella effort to separate 'em."

Chris struggles looking past his career. His fears dictate his decisions. This ending is intense! I held my breath to the very end. Thank you Harper Miller for the Epilogue! I'm definitely a new fan! 5 Stars.

Complexity is a M/M novella, but it is also a biracial romance and to some extent a bisexual romance, making it very unique indeed. I had a hard time getting into the story at first, but then the plot picked up and held my attention.

The main character, Manny (a personal trainer), was complex and well developed, but I felt like his love interest, Chris (a famous actor), was not as fleshed out as I would have liked. What I did see of Chris I really liked. What he did and said at the end of the book melted my heart! Manny, on the other hand, I wanted to shake many times, and I'm not generally a violent person. The relationship between Manny and Chris was well written, and the intimate scenes between them were intense and vivid. I liked seeing their relationship develop and blossom.

Complexity was the first book that I have read by Harper Miller. Although I like M/M romances and appreciated the unique biracial romance, it was not my cup of tea. I had a difficult time wading through all the informal speech Manny used like "tryna" and "gonna," which distracted me from the plot. Also, despite the disclaimer of "no cliffhangers" in the book description, the novella did have a sort of cliffhanger. The end of the book, the epilogue, is only online at the author's website.

Harper Miller is a New to Me Author.

I fell in love with the cover of this story when I paticipated in the Release Blitz. I just had to jump in between the covers and see who Manny and Chris really are. I was not disappointed.

This is an MM Romance novella and it may not be for everyone. So if explicit, hot, m/m sex scenes and talking dirty is not your thing, you may want to skip this read.

Harper Miller really amazed me with her upfront and realistic approach in depicting the scintillating and scorching hot interaction between these two characters.

ICE BUCKET PLEASE!

Manny is in between relationships, determined to sedate his sexual desire, he decides to find a way to do just that... That's when he meets Chris... and the mind blowing journey begins. Chris is an interesting character, it's intriguing to see things from his POV.

Well written, fast paced, with a picturesque writing style that is easy to follow. I Loved the way Manny's lingo was written... very nice job.

Consistent world building, raw, edgy, emotional, seductive twists and turns that kept me flipping pages.

I was gifted an e-copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. No renumeration was involved.

Good golly! This was awesome. With a few strokes of the pen, in a handfull of pages, we get an amazing deeply emotional, funny tale about two guys, Manny and Chris. But Manny steals the show. The book has a very Santino Hassell vibe and I kept thinking of Raymond from as Manny spoke. Urban, funny, real relatable characters. Fantastic dialogue. And dirty, sexy and flaming hot smexy. Great perspective of a bi guy. So many authors throw in the bisexual theme as a way to explain a character's actions. Not here. Manny knows who he is and I loved it!! Though we meet them late in the book, the secondary characters, moms, Juan, etc are well rounded. Her depiction of NYC is spot on. This is a new to me author and this may be her first MM. Now I know she has said these kinky chronicles are standalones, but please, please more of Chris and Manny. It can't end that way. I don't read many MF books anymore but might have to make an exception for Ms. Miller. Her writing is superb. Just hope, hope, hope she dips into the MM pool again.

We start the story with Manny a self-professed manwhore confused and hurting after a breakup. One he initiated and hasn't explained to his boyfriend. That he was jealous and considered Chris a boyfriend added to his confusion. Then we go back and learn how Manny and Chris met and who Chris is.

This is my first story by Harper Miller and I fell in love with her writing style and both Chris and Manny. The story is very intense and powerful. I think I fell so in love with Manny. I adored how Harper gave him such personality with his dialect and slang. I felt like i could hear him speaking.
I also liked that though Chris had submissive tendencies he was no pushover and held his own with the tough Manny and was willing to go after what he wanted.

I do wish the story had been longer and we got more but who know maybe we will in time.

If you like actors, personal trainers, strong characters and a bit of mild kink i think you will love this!
