Words cannot describe how disappointing it was to wake up to this final chapter after weeks of giddy anticipation. There were spoilers posted the day before the English translation was released, of course, but I pretended not to see them in the hope that Kubo had written something worthy of this once-great series. As you'll see from my ranting, that hope was misplaced.
"Please do not give up hope, Ichigo. Stay the way you are. Keep jumping from the rolling grains of sand called fate or possibility with your eyes shut. That is hope for humans. Do not lose hope. There is nothing more painful for a parent than killing a child in a despair." [Yhwach]
For the life of me I couldn't understand why people felt let down by BLEACH's ending. Now I think I understand. What I also understand is the reason why the ending looks the way it looks. The author was forced to end the story quicker than he planned to (due to health reasons or due to the demand of the company, I am not entirely sure) and, because of that, both the readers and the author have been wronged. There are great moments that have been planted in Volume 74, of course. Moments that I love with my entire heart and I'm incredibly grateful for their existence. But there are also things (as well as the lack of certain things) that I couldn't help, but feel disappointed of.
"Farewell, Ichigo. I no longer need you or my children, the Sternritter. Watch from where you are. The sight of the Soul Society and the living world being crushed by me." [Yhwach]
Since Volume 74 is the final one, it had to present the big showdown battle between the MC (Ichigo Kurosaki) and the big bad guy (Yhwach). It's supposed to be a battle like no other, with the highest of stakes - a battle for everything. Either the good side wins the fight and everything's safe, or loses it and everything's lost. I can't say that I'm happy with how the showdown looked like. I mean, I understand that the bad guy had to be intimidating and that there had to be a moment of "all hope is lost". Things need to look bad for the MC just for him to pick up the pieces of himself, get back up once again and inflict the final blow. But...
First of all, Yhwach was ridiculously overpowered. There was zero chance for Ichigo to win this fight from the very beginning. A zero chance. The whole freaking Soul Society could've jumped him and he would get out of this unscathed. For me the final showdown didn't look like a battle, it looked more like a judgement enforcement, with Yhwach as an executor and Ichigo as the poor soul who kept on struggling, kept on giving his best, but whatever he did was all for nothing, because his fate was already sealed.
Second of all, I craved for Ichigo to shine brightly just like he shone in the final fight against Aizen. There were a couple of bright moments for Ichigo (like his true Bankai reveal), but overall he got relentlessly beaten up. For me, a huge Ichigo fan, was incredibly hard to witness it. I hate, absolutely hate when Ichigo is hurt, but even more when he is in such state that he loses hope completely. It's so out of character for Ichigo to shut down and stop fighting. Seeing him getting beaten down over and over again, no matter what he did, to the point of the "all hope is lost" moment made my heart cry out of pain and despair. It's not something that I expected to see and to feel. I wanted Ichigo and Yhwach (as impossible as it sounds) go head to head - after everything Ichigo had been through, after everything he had learned and after he grew up so much as a warrior and as a person, I think he could have stand against Yhwach with his head held high and having a high chance to win. But that was not the case at all. Yhwach had the upper hand from the very beginning and if it wasn't for intervention from other characters, Ichigo would have lost the battle, the Soul Society and Hueco Mundo would perish and the living world would change completely to the point of no recognition. It's not that I didn't like the intervention - in the contrary, I like when the villain gets down not just by the hand of the MC, but through a co-operation. All I wanted was for Ichigo to shine which didn't happen, not how I imagined it to happen, at least. He's powerful. Ichigo, I mean. He's incredibly powerful. He got through so much. Everything lend him to that fight and it's just... It hurts me to think about it, so I will just move on to the next topic.
"Welcome to my Soul Society." [Aizen]
As much as I love my favorite boy Ichigo, the MVP's of this volume were for me Renji, Ishida and... yes, Aizen. These three were the true highlight of this volume, the best players that made my heart beat the loudest and made me the happiest. I chose Renji, because of his incredible loyalty. Ishida - because of his enormous love for his friends (that he had been forced to shut down through basically the whole TYBW). And Aizen, because of his choice of standing in Yhwach's way and facing him in a fight (no matter what his reasons for it were). I will speak more about Renji and Ishida in a minute, let's focus on Aizen for now. Look, I was never a fan of this character. He was the shaming antagonist through most of BLEACH, a guy who sacrificed so many innocent lives for his obsession of becoming a god-like creature. I hated him and breathed a sigh of relief when he was imprisoned. I knew that he will show up again, of course (thanks of the courtesy of social media), I knew what kind of role he would play in the final showdown. But I did not expect to like it. I was actually smiling when I saw Aizen greeting Yhwach in Seireitei and cheered for him when he faced Yhwach in battle. I did not think I will admit it, but Tite Kubo's choice of including Aizen in the final showdown was one of the best decisions he had ever made. I really liked how the MC (Ichigo) and the guy who was an antagonist through most of the story teamed up against way bigger threat (a clear use of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' trope). And I liked how there was no shock, no surprise, no anger or no complaint from Ichigo's side. He went with the flow instead. I wonder what they would say to each other if they had more chance for a conversation.
"You said... the balance is a choice. Given the choice... I chose to be with them. There is no self-interest there. No right. Or wrong. Because... we're friends." [Ishida]
I was so relived after the previous volume, when Ishida's reason for joining Yhwach's forces was revealed and when he (finally) switched sides once again. I should have never ever doubt Ishida's character. I always thought of him not only as the reasonable one, but, despite him saying otherwise, as a person who deeply cared about his companions, even about Ichigo who he constantly butted heads with. He thought of them as fools, but he considered himself a fool as well, as someone who liked to be a part of this group of fools he was always associated to, no matter if he wanted to or not. Everything he did was for their sake. He just tried to protect his friends. Yes, I'm deeply touched by his behaviour and his words. And yes, I cried.
"If you couldn't push forward anymore, I'd keep you going. Even if I had to carry you. From now on, I'll never stop, until the day you die." [Renji]
When I said that I cried because of Ishida, it was absolutely nothing in comparison to Renji's moments, especially the one with Ichigo. I BAWLED MY EYES OUT. I'm always such a sucker for moments like this! They make me so incredibly happy! When it comes to Renji's character, words like this should have be expected. He was a person who didn't shy away from pleading for Ichigo to save his friend when he was perfectly aware of his own limitations. He is a true man. A man of honour. You all can call him a crybaby, a loser and a weakling, but I always saw much more in him. He might be not as physically strong as other characters, but mentally? He's one of the greatest. I love him to death and I always appreciated the friendship between him and Ichigo. I just wasn't aware of how deep of a bond they actually had, especially coming from Renji's side. I never thought of how big of an impact Ichigo had on him (and on his relationship with Rukia) until now. That was such a beautiful scene.
Okay, now let's get into the deeper spoiler section of my review. And, well, the not so good things about the final volume (as much as I would like to avoid it, I have to get my feelings out of my chest):
* The lack of content between the end of the final showdown and the "10 years later" segment made the switch from one to another feel completely bizarre. I was so utterly confused and baffled by it. It's not like I wasn't aware of the 10 years later segment incoming. It came so out of nowhere that I couldn't properly enjoy what was actually seeing.
* The lack of explanation of how the universe now works. - how are the living world, Soul Society and Hueco Mundo looking the same way, like nothing happened? Wasn't established that the death of Reio will destroy everything? Both Yhwach and Reio stopped existing, but the universe hadn't changed in any way. Why? Who knows? ???♀?
* The Pernida and Gerard case. - there was no explanation of them being the arm and heart of Reio (and being the Quincies at the same time) ???♀?
* Aizen. - why did he let himself be imprisoned again? ?
* no Isshin/Ichigo and Uryu/Ryouken content. - how is possible that we didn't even get a scene of them talk with each other after Yhwach got defeated? I feel hurt because of this.
*No Ichigo/Uryu talk. - This one also hurt me.
*Why was Ichigo back in the world of the living after the end of the war? - Didn't Kyoraku give his friends Soul Tickets in case Ichigo had to live in Soul Society (because of his enormous power after his training with Squad Zero members)?? There was no talk about it.
* The Ukitake grave. - where are the graves belonging to Yamamoto, Unohana and Komamura?
* The Yhwach/Jugram connection. - not explained.
* No goodbye or thank you or anything scene between Ichigo and Soul Reapers. And no scene between Ichigo and his allies (Nel, Grimmjow, Vizards, Riruka, Yukio). - I don't understand this choice at all.
* Hueco Mundo. - is that area safe? Is Halibel okay? Did Grimmjow and Nel came back home safe and sound? There weren't any answers to it and it drives me crazy!
The Quincy shadow world. - what happened to it, did it got destroyed? Were people still living there (and being dead now) or were the Sternritters the only residents?
*The Yhwach's remnants after ten years and Kazui's final blow. I don't understand how couldn't Soul Reapers sense Yhwach's remnants for so long. And Kazui being the one to destroy Yhwach (so casually, mind you) was a really weird choice. I didn't appreciate it at all.
*The Kazui case. - the kid unpleasantly reminds me of Goten from DBZ. Both of them from early age have a power that their fathers worked their asses off to get through their whole story. Kazui seems to be one of the special snowflakes ones and I'm not a fan of that. And don't give me the excuse that "but Ichigo and Orihime are his parents" thing. Ichigo had Isshin and Masaki as his parents, but still had to work his ass off to be where he is today.
As much as I liked to see the lives of the characters in the future, the segment was weirdly placed and, because of that, felt bizarre and quite wrong, so I couldn't enjoy it and appreciate it as much as I would like to. It was nice to see Ichigo's sisters all grown up and seeing the new Gotei 13. I hope that the upcoming Cour 4 of TYBW anime version will give us more content and some answers. I am patiently look forward to see it, hoping with all my heart to love it and cherish it, just like I love and cherish BLEACH in general.
I did it! Finished reading all 74 out of them and not one has let me down. Just like how Ichigo has never let anyone down. This series is so worth. the writing, the dialogues, the quotes that TK adds in the beginning of every volume, the plot twists, the powers, the relationships between the characters, the action packed panels, the beautiful background stories that TK has created, the world buildings. I loved everything about this series. Now I humbly request we get a spin off with Kazui. That boy is going to places. I know it and I hope TK picks up. ??
How dare he put these two on the cover. HOW DARE HE. Kubo, why do you hate us.
At no point during this 15-year serialization do I believe that Kubo would have wanted his masterpiece to end up like this--I'm not saying where it ended up, but how. It was so poorly executed as to be a complete joke, which honestly hurts after faithfully and passionately following this story for years and being part of its fandom community. This is not about ships; this is about the integrity of the work, and I feel like this last chapter looks at the whole of bleach and just shrugs at it. Rukia stayed behind to "look after" Orihime? Renji went on with Ichigo? When was this about the bro bond between the two of them? Is Renji the rotator to Ichigo's sand? The white moon to his black sun? The Death to his Berry? How could Ichigo face his ultimate big bad with Renji at his side; it was never about the two of them. It started with Rukia, Rukia was right there, and it should have ended with the two of them.
It's a shame and a slap in the face, and Bleach and the fans deserved better.
Well, it's also just hard to believe it's over. I have spent years loving these characters and having fun reading about them. Thank you Ichigo, Rukia, and everyone--you will be missed.
And so, my journey with Bleach is pretty much complete. I love the series for what it is; an action-packed shonen that never stops blowing your mind. It's not a complex literary masterwork, but it's good, exciting fun, which also has it's place within the space. Love the series, please don't listen to the "BLEACH FALLS OFF AFTER SOUL SOCIETY" stuff. Read or watch and make that decision for yourself.
The series has sort of sucked and gone down hill for awhile now but I was hoping Kubo could redeem himself with the finale. Instead he literally made it worse and all I have to say is congrats Kubo for shitting over your whole life's work. Hope it was worth it!
What does one say about this car-crash of a final volume? One says that it is not Old Man Kubo's fault that it ended so quickly, with so many questions hanging in the air, so many loose ends trailing wistfully behind us, so many "plot-holes" and "arse-pulls" (the meaning of which I am not quite sure. Yet it wouldn't be right not to include it, as it is on the tongues of Bleach fans quite frequently) left untackled. It is all definitely the Jump's fault... or is it? Maybe Kubo planned this all along? Perhaps Kubo's the one who broke into the Jump's office one day, dressed up as a member of the Yakuza, and forced them to let him retire at gun-point? Why are we all assuming Jump gave him the sack? Knowing Kubo, he's probably the one who gave them the finger. He was always a rebellious one, even as a young lad. And let's face it, we all know he's the King of Trolls. We, his fans, roast him for it every time this behaviour manifests itself in Manga-form, yet secretly we admire his tenacity.
But anyway, this isn't about Kubo, it's about Bleach... Who am I kidding, it's EVERYTHING about Kubo! We need him to talk! Explain himself! Release a scandalous interview on an underground web! Something! Anything! Anything but the silent treatment! I digress...
Despite the fact that I sympathise with Kubo's circumstances and the whole situation in general (as it appears to be, anyhow), I still cannot forgive the final chapter... It was so... dissatisfactory. Let me just get this perfectly straight: I did not ship Ichigo with anyone. Ideally I would've liked Ichigo to remain a humble bachelor right to the very end. He was so overtly asexual/prude/oblivious throughout the entire series, so for him to have suddenly discovered his inner man is a little alienating. To have discovered it through Orihime is not only alienating, it's nauseating. You know I'm all about that health, and this is one of the unhealthiest pairings I've ever witnessed. Not only is it unhealthy, it's amazingly boring and mind-blowingly random. Even in the final picture, Ichigo persists on treating Orihime, his Now Wife, like a piece of furniture. Quite literally - I mean he's using her head as an arm-rest. It wouldn't be so bad if Orihime was the type to take action if he inadvertantly hurt her by accidentally putting too much pressure on his elbow and therefore crushing her skull, but she isn't that type, is she? She's just sitting there, shrinking into herself and looking with large fearful eyes that're simultaneously filled with unhealthy admiration of Ichigo. It's unhealthy because it's beyond the point of admiration and fits more accurately into the Worship category. See what I mean? Unhealthy.
But! If he had to get hitched, I would've preferred it if he'd married Rukia in the afterlife. No one, and I mean no one can deny that they had the most chemistry in the entire series, whether they liked that fact or not. Even then, it's a stretch. Ichigo and marriage/romance just don't go together. Can anyone honestly picture Ichigo, as himself (not your own fantasy version), actually popping the question? Actually taking a romantic/marital interest in another human being? Ichigo, the clueless mug? Renji and Rukia on the other hand aren't bad as a couple but their child is unfortunately quite... baffling, to put it mildly. They don't suit the parenting gaming at all.
Putting aside the perplexing affair of marriage and children, which I could rant on about for much longer, trust me, there's more to be dissatisfied about.
For starters, Uryu Ishida. What's going on with that guy, and do any of his friends even care about him anymore? All the other characters seem to be pretty happy in themselves and content with life. But Uryu gets a mere two panels, where he's gazing at his mobile screen, smiling wanly at Chad's performance on air. What's even more sad is that he's the director of a hospital, something he never wanted to be. Apparently, it's his Dad's hospital too - more lemon juice squeezed generously into his wounds. Sadder yet, none of his friends mention him. They're all together at the Kurosaki abode, like one big happy family, and yet no one enquires about young Uryu. Not a single, "Where is he? How's he doing? What's he up to? Why isn't he here?" not even a swift, inclusive text-message! Nothing! It is left to Uryu's faceless, nameless colleagues to inform the readers, from behind a Fire Exit door, that Uryu is such a workaholic that this measly little lunch break of his is the only time he has to tune into Chad's Boxing match. That is the saddest, saddest ending ever.
It's worse because considering what Uryu's done, he's a pretty important character, and a darned good friend. Yet he was pummelled with disrespect after disrespect in every arc, but especially the final arc, which Uryu fans were hoping would be his big break. For crying out loud, it was the QUINCY arc. Uryu's a QUINCY! Why didn't he get more spotlight? Bigger, better fights? A more heroic part in the final battle? I was surprised by this lack of respect because Kubo has claimed in the past to have a soft-spot for the underdogs, yet he had no qualms about pushing Uryu to the side time and time again. There were moments where Uryu's absence was so inexplicable, it was actually hilarious. I laughed heartily. Then I got annoyed. And his friends! After all that he's done from them, they repay this debt by forgetting he exists! And Ichigo; his one and only Cousin-Brother! What does he do? Marries the love of Uryu's life! Marries her, even though Ichigo barely acknowledged her as a friend let alone a love interest for the entire story. I suppose it's no wonder that Uryu was all by himself in the end. The poor guy's developed some serious trust issues after all the betrayal he's been dealt. As would I, if my life was half as traumatic as young Ishida's. The bottom line is, he was treated like a insignificant pawn by all and sundry throughout the series. Fans and non-fans of Uryu will likely agree with me on that.
Edit: I began writing this review on the 19th of August, 2016. Now, over four weeks later, I return to it, only to realise that everything I have to say and wanted to say has, "already been "brought'n". The Bleach fandom is echoing like the shriek of an Eagle in the mountains with the same complaints, comments, arguments and counter-arguments. The explosive reaction of Bleach fans the world over is much the same as the explosive force unleashed when Kenny removed his Eye-patch versus Nnoitora. More over; many, many fans have painstakingly made all the points I wished to make, with infinite more eloquence and twice as much precision, so there is little reason for me to add my two-cents. The only reason left being that I do rather enjoy talking to myself, but that's not reason enough at this rate. Therefore, I end my review here.
So many years waiting for the next issue, rooting for this fantastic characters, some of which I really loved... And now it's over, the last arcs weren't that good and this finale was just too rushed and abrupt. I/we needed closure, but that wasn't what we got. I feel so let down and disappointed and, overall, sad, because I believe that Bleach and its characters deserved so much better after these 15 years.
WHY DOES THIS SERIES HAVE TO END?!?!?! *Whimpers* The ending was a little rushed at the end but I'm glad Tite Kubo was able to end the series the way he wanted to end it. I know it's been hard for him with the constant pressure of being a major manga artist AND the fact that he has been bedridden. He went above and beyond with Bleach and it will always be one of my favorite series.
Since the first episode, i fell in love with the story, the universe and the characters i loved every single character introduced!! They all have unique personalities and i love how they were written!! Ichigo’s writing >>>>>>>>
The anime instantly became in my top 5 animes and now i think it’s my second favorite after attack on titan ofc!!
The ending felt a bit rushed, but i sill loved it, everything that was preparing for it! I also loved the little Epilogue and i love that my favorite ships became canon in the end??? And ALSO THE FOUND FAMILY MY GOD MAKES ME WANT TO CRY I LOVE MY FAMILY????
Overall, amazing worldbuilding, character development, fights!! Bleach is an anime that I’ll think about for so long! I don’t think ill find an anime like Bleach or aot!
Amazing world-building with stunning action-packed panels and impressive characters- building every character stand out for their powers & individuality. Never failed to impress, I get goosebumps every moment when they power up! JUST WOW WOW WOW!
This volume brings to an end the overly-drawn out franchise and offers a rushed ending to mangaka Tite Kubo's The 1,000 Year Blood War story-arc as well as a 10-years-later epilogue that leaves a lot to be desired.
When it comes to the supposedly epic battle that unveils Ichigo's final bankai form, it is as expected, fun on the surface but poorly-developed underneath. So much of the hype around it is instantly killed by Yhwach's abilities. It doesn't help when there's a certain "deus ex machina" that enters the confrontation and one that belongs to a story-arc that wasn't my cup of tea. The battle then proceeds to an unlikely alliance with a character that has been teased for a while that could've worked really well if it weren't for the overall failure of these past few volumes. How this battle ends is simply underwhelming and there's nothing more to add to it.
As for the epilogue that mangaka Tite Kubo rewards fans with... It is essentially an insult. The romantic pairings that he creates couldn't possibly be accepted by any fan and come out of the blue.
This franchise has clearly gone downhill but remains a childhood favourite for what the first story-arcs offered. Just lower your expectations as you go further into the story and expect no proper closure by the end.
Yours truly,
Lashaan | Blogger and Book Reviewer Official blog:
After so many years of reading, watching and loving this series, reading the last chapter was a little heart breaking, I'll be honest with you. Are there things I'd like to change in this last volume? of course there are, but that being said I loved the journey, story, and characters too much to not love the final chapter in this series.
But, with the announcement of this final arc finally being animated I'm taken back to 2012 when I was sitting on my bed and watching the last episode of the anime on my laptop. Sure it might be over, but that doesn't mean we cant go back and relive it, and this time with more knowledge. The temptation to start rereading from the beginning is so strong, but there are too many other amazing series to add along side Bleach on my favourites shelf. (I mean I'll probably go back and reread them.... okay I will reread them! Stop calling me out!)
This series has a place in my heart and I'm so happy I've been able to force my friends to read it and them love it just as much as I do.
An Era has ended once again. It is a happy ending! though this last arc was a bit :/ but it wrapped up everything neatly I think, The kids look awesome!!! it is kindda similar to what happened at Naruto with the facing of the big bad, the happy ending and the new generation :) Though the ending was rushed to finish everything in an ultimatum but it was long over due. This 5 is not for the final volume but rather on the whole series. Goodbye!
What a great final volume for Bleach! I really loved this series and after bingeing it all, it felt really cohesive and I loved it. Such a fantastic end to the story of Ichigo and Rukia and the world of the Soul Society.
Not very good. Extremely rushed. Aizen was handled to such an embarrassing degree that I can't even fathom what went wrong here. What a waste of an amazing antagonist.
ahhh and it's finished! a very decent ending, if I do say so myself. this was very fun to read and I adored these characters very much. now I cannot wait to catch up on the anime.
Now I need more... -.- I loved this arc! I can't wait to watch when the anime comes out!! I hope Tite Kubo writes a sequel! Although Masashi Kishimoto isn't writing Boruto...*sighs* I'm just glad he's over seeing it.
I love everyone in this except for the Full Bringers...what a great ending as well!
Ach... je smutné, ?e Bleach u? skon?il. Forever. Bylo to... zajímavé. Některé věci jsem ne?ekala. A ten konec? WTF Kubo. Tohle není romantika! Velké plus za Aizena. Troll a? do konce. Ichiga nekomentuji. Rad?i.

Finally finished! This is one of the first anime I watched as a teenager, and I'm so glad to have finally been able to finish this story. Like others, I do feel the ending was a tad rushed, but understanding the creator had health issues and them being content with the ending makes me content with it. Now with this final arc being animated, it would be nice if they're able to flesh it out a bit more than the manga.
Compared to other anime/manga, the character development and the plot has a lot to be desired, but Bleach has always shined in its art style and humor for me. Thanks for the great journey ??
