The human race is in trouble. After narrowly claiming victory in the first invasion, an assault by advanced militaristic aliens armed with light speed capable spacecraft is a continuing threat. Even so, Chrysalis is in danger, and Whatsit is determined to rescue his fellow Chrysallamans. It's a task he knows he cannot accomplish without the help of his human brethren. With the threat of future attacks looming, the humans will have to decide whether it's best to go on the defensive at home on Earth or take the fight to its source and save the Chrysallaman race.
Sam B. Miller II holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance, and a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance, from the University of Tennessee. He has five children and lives with his wife, Susan, and their many dogs, in Northeast Tennessee. After writing a successful Science Fiction 3-book series, Miller turned his attention upon the mystery of the supernatural. Smith was his fourth novel. He has now returned to his favorite genre, Science Fiction, for his fifth novel, U-10.
I totally fell in love with the first book, and when I learned there was a second book, I just had to read this one too.
I honestly suggest reading the first book, I honestly feel it makes it easier to comprehend, however it is explained that the character ‘Whatsit is the same character from the first book, but in general you need the feeling from the first book of his capture, just my opinion. But the book can be read as a standalone book, it is up to the reader. I am just a person that prefers being a know it all about my characters.
As I stated, Whatsit, is from the first novel. He was captured at a young age, however now he is an adult and working with the humans to help make a statement to the Chrysallaman race.
As I began reading, I loved it when WhatsIt in who always was dressed in his favorite outfit, a brightly colored sombrero, and a dark green trench coat, associated with the humans that came to know. His personality is very unique and I just enjoy something about him.
And then when we meet Gooey::clearing my throat:: ahem. I mean Dr. Jamins GooYee, he thinks he is, wait I mean he thought he was a know-it-all, until he met our team of humans and WhatsIt. We have the Chrysallaman’s who have just been awakened and thought they have arrived at HG-281 to which was thirty light years of travel from Chrysalis, in hopes of making a new colony, because humans are easy to destroy. Or so they thought. And they awake to find themselves within the confines and control of Earthlings that they thought they could control, who are now willing to teach them: no, you are not any longer in control.
We show them we can win in a battle of mind control, by almost killing their best mind control expert, and we show them their own ships alloy can be destroyed. Then when Dr. GooYee thinks his famous body slicing in half human ray can chop the humans in half, they spray the ray across, and nothing happens, except the necklaces that the humans are wearing, exhibit a blue force protecting them. This is when Dr. GooYee realizes, maybe he needs updated.
But this is just the beginning. You see, the reason that everyone was so determined to get away from Chrysalis, was because on their planet, they were being invaded and attacked. They needed a place to go to feel safe, and the Chrysallaman race thought because their intelligence told them HG-281 was a race that could be taken over, and was a compatible planet, this was the safest place for them.
WhatsIt wanted to help his fellow Chrysallaman, and he knew with his help, and that of the humans, there just might be a chance that they could pull it off. Otherwise, it was seeming like more and more of them were going to continue to keep coming after Earth time and time again. Therefore, Earth was going to be in trouble too, yet still.
WhatsIt convinces his fellow human brethren that he now considers family, that the best bet would be to save to Chrysalis and the race of Chrysallaman and help them to recover their planet in the ‘Dawn of Chrysalis.
This book kept me entertained just as the first one did, and I give it five stars, more if I could. I loved every minute of it. There are points in here where you will chuckle with the characters, and points where you will be on the edge of your seat, waiting and worrying. This book is an excellent science fiction story worth every penny, and you will want to read it over and over again.
This book, along with the first one, would make for a great science fiction action based movie! I would love to see it movie format one day!
This is a very interesting science fiction book based on a constant struggle faced by the people of this city, as they are under attack. They are striving to save their race and their home who are forced to decide between adopting a defensive or an offensive strategy.
This is a book that is emotional and also packed with action and strategy. It is fast paced, exciting and very detailed. The writing style is brilliant and extremely descriptive, making the picturing of the scenes easier than ever. I'm pretty sure that most of you guys wouldn't even be reading the review coz to be honest, I grabbed myself a copy of this book the minute I was done with the first one. I'll stop now before I give away anything important.
I especially loved the characters in the book and thought they were very relatable to, and had strong personality traits. I would recommend this book to absolutely any fan of sci-fi! Impeccable work by the author!
Once again, Sam B. Miller II and John Pirhalla take us on a wonderful storytelling science fiction ride in their continuation of “The Origin of F.O.R.C.E series, “Dawn of Chrysalis the second book in this series. Like my review of the first, I give this book an overall five-star rating for its unique and powerful storytelling capabilities along with delightfully developed characters and excellent narration. Whatsit is one of those characters that just seem to make you happy no matter your mood. If you are one who enjoys light-hearted action-packed science fiction stories balancing action and excitement with characters you will actually care about, then the “Dawn of Chrysalis is a book I would highly recommend you pick up. Be aware, this is the second book in a serial series, so you will want to make sure to read the first one before diving in to the second. Also, this book ends with a cliffhanger, so if you are not one who likes waiting for the next book to be released, I recommend you wait a bit. I’m unsure of the total number of books planned for the series, but I will be listening to the next one when it is released!
I was happy the author included a small prologue before jumping into the story to help remind me of the highlights that took place in the first book. It allowed me to quickly enter into the story and not wonder what occurred or how it fit together while listening to new details. I was pleased to see the author kept the same main characters along with all the banter and fun they had between one another in the previous book. I felt right at home diving into this book. The book contained the same humor and light-heartedness I remembered from the first, however this one also had a more serious or heavy feel to it. Not only do we have many of the same characters, we are introduced to a number of new characters. Relationships grow, and for others they are destroyed in an instant. The book included additional romantic elements I do not remember from the first, but these do not overshadow the main goals of the team and their struggle to endure.
The characters not only face the same enemies they had in the first book, but in this book, they face ones that are even more powerful and ruthless. They have to devise a new plan to see if they can defeat this new enemy or they will become forced servants. This book included bigger ships, bigger battles, bigger teams, along with much improved technology required to survive in an ever-hostile universe. I smiled to hear that Whatsit continues to wear his tan colored sombrero, a green overcoat, and his black boots. Not something one would expect an erect lizard creature to wear, but it seems to fit his personality. I also laughed out loud when I found out one of his favorite earth delicacies, you will have to read the book for find the answer to this one. I want to give credit to the book’s cover art as it really fits the look and feel portrayed in the story itself.
The book contains some light use of language that could be considered vulgar to some, but nothing that would be offensive or considered four-letter words. There is some high-level implied sexual content, but as with language this is not something that would be considered obscene or over-the-top. A few scenes also contain graphic violence that may not be appropriate for very young readers; yet nothing excessive.
I was happy to hear John Pirhalla narrate this book, as he narrated the first book in the series. It helps keep the same feeling within the series and I thought he did an exceptional job with the first book. His narration of this book was of the same quality as the previous one, and I would have expected nothing less. I did notice during times of silence a slight compression or noise resembling cassette tape hiss, I believe this is more related to the method of audio compression either by Audible or when recorded. Nothing preventing someone from listening and enjoying the book. I did not notice any other audio artifacts or issues while listening. The voices were distinguishable, accents done well, and volume consistent.
If you enjoyed the first book, this is one you will want to pick up and continue the journey. If you have not picked up the first book and you like well-written science fiction stories, I recommend you grab and read the first one before moving on to this book. You really need to have a good understanding of the events from book one to enjoy book two. I myself look forward to book three and will be listening to it when released in audiobook format.

A Brilliant Novel of Humor and Inventiveness Late in Sam B. Miller’s wonderful Dawn of Chrysalis, mission operative Doug Jensen channels the thoughts of the telepathic Becky Chang: “Is it me or is every alien lifeform in the galaxy born an egomaniac? As the second in Miller’s devilishly brilliant F.O.R.C.E. trilogy, this novel extends the humor and the inventiveness of first novel (The Origin of F.O.R.C.E.) to other realms. In the first novel, the leaders of earth had roughly 70 years (from the period 1947 to 2014) to catch up to the telepathy and military superiority of the invading Chrysallamans. Through tremendous planning, the help of the stranded alien Whatsit, the theoretical genius of physicist Heinbaum, the practical ingenuity of the weapons expert McPherson, and an inspiring level of human decency (especially in this divisive age), humanity was able to repel the invading force. But in the Dawn of Chrysalis, the challenges become even greater: while the earth leaders seek to integrate incrementally the Chrysallaman aliens into earth, tapping into their knowledge and brainpower in the process, they encounter an even greater threat in an Assidian race, which is aggressively destroying other life-forms, including millions of Chrysallamen. As with the first in the series, what makes the Dawn of Chrysalis so entertaining and stimulating is Miller’s gift for explaining incredibly complex scientific concepts with clarity and perceptiveness coupled with his ability to create memorable characters. The aforementioned Whatsit, an alien of outlandish dress and urbane wit, provides a tremendous link among cultures. Meanwhile, the wonderful odd couple of the burly McPherson and the priggish Heinbaum return with crackling exchanges that I could listen to all day. The acerbically pompous Chrysallaman scientist GooYee adds another layer to the dynamic of the lab. The plot has its share clever twists and a shrouded villain or two (whose identities I won’t spoil here). Miller nimbly shifts perspectives throughout allowing the reader to empathize with alien figures as they try to reorient themselves to new realities. That approach fits nicely thematically with the outlook of the earth leaders, who seek to understand first before they react. The desire of the leaders of earth, particularly Tom Blunt, to plan meticulously and to seek deeper knowledge is truly inspiring. As I hinted earlier, the reader finds himself deeply heartened by encountering such examples of patience, decency, and learning in era so fraught with impulsivity and immediate gratifications. Always into the mix of these scenes are healthy doses of humor as when an exasperated McPherson asks Heinbaum: “You saved my life with a garage door opener? Indeed, the novel is tremendously engaging and exciting, right down to its very last page, a page that points a thrilling next installment of this highly original, intense, yet somehow charming series. I can’t wait to read on.
In "Dawn of Chrysalis," the second installment of Sam B. Miller II's "The Origin of F.O.R.C.E." series, humanity faces an existential threat following their narrow victory in the first alien invasion. Now, a new and more technologically advanced alien force poses a persistent danger with their light-speed capable spacecraft. Amidst this turmoil, Chrysalis, the home of the Chrysallamans, is under siege, prompting Whatsit, a Chrysallaman, to embark on a daring mission to rescue his kin. However, he knows success hinges on collaboration with his human allies.
Miller weaves a gripping narrative filled with high-stakes action and interstellar intrigue. The novel explores complex themes of alliance-building and sacrifice as humans and Chrysallamans must navigate the delicate balance between defending Earth and launching a preemptive strike against their formidable foes. The author skillfully blends science fiction elements with poignant human and alien interactions, creating a story that is both thrilling and thought-provoking.
The characters in "Dawn of Chrysalis" are well-developed and relatable, each grappling with their own fears and motivations in the face of overwhelming odds. Whatsit's determination to save his race, coupled with the humanity's struggle to protect their planet, adds depth and emotional resonance to the narrative. Miller excels in depicting the camaraderie and tensions that arise when disparate species unite against a common enemy, highlighting themes of trust and cooperation amidst chaos.
The pacing is brisk, keeping readers engaged with twists and turns that escalate the tension to a gripping climax. Miller's world-building is vivid, painting a detailed picture of both Earth under threat and the distant realms of Chrysalis, enhancing the immersive experience for readers.
In conclusion, "Dawn of Chrysalis" is a thrilling continuation of the "The Origin of F.O.R.C.E." series, showcasing Sam B. Miller II's talent for crafting compelling science fiction adventures. With its blend of epic space battles, moral dilemmas, and compelling characters, this novel will satisfy fans of the genre and leave them eagerly anticipating the next installment. It's a must-read for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking science fiction with heart-pounding action.
I really liked the first book in Miller’s The Origin of F.O.R.C.E. series, and the second did not disappoint. Picking up where the first book left off, Dawn of Chrysalis begins with Whatsit and the human members of F.O.R.C.E. preparing to gather Intel on and possibility confront Chrysalis and the Emperor. While technological advances and hand-picked Chrysallaman scientists advance their efforts, a new enemy for both Chrysallamans and humans throws wrinkles into F.O.R.C.E.’s plans. With new and old enemies from beyond our solar system and the reemergence of a familiar foe on the home front, what will it take for F.O.R.C.E. to protect themselves, their allies, and Earth? And who will survive their efforts?
The first book pleasantly surprised me with a new take on the Roswell UFO incident, although I had a couple of problems with excessive exposition and stereotyped characters. The second book manages to outdo the first; Miller maintains the same level of originality and creative energy as in the first book and, while excessive exposition is still an issue, many stereotyped characters become fleshed out so that I love them even more.
Unfortunately, Miller spends a lot of time reiterating plot and character development established in the first novel, which slows the story down at points. New readers to the series may appreciate the catch-up and it may also prove useful for those who took a long break between reading the first book and this one. Still, I got bored sometimes as much of the exposition in the first half of the book works to reinforce facts which readers should already know from the first book.
Overall, Dawn of Chrysalis is a wonderful addition to an excellent series. I’ve never really been a fan of first-encounter stories, especially ones involving human/alien hostility, but Miller has certainly changed my mind. He creates worlds which are both exotic and realistic, and he describes just enough of the scientific principles to immerse the reader without losing the story in the details. His aliens feel familiar yet unique and all have evolutionary reasons for looking and acting the way they do. I highly recommend this series for science fiction fans, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the third book.
( Format : Audiobook ) ""Humans don't easily accept authority."" Continuing the story of an attempted earth invasion - and the alien in the sombrero hat. Following the defeat of the military attack of earth by Chrystonians, , a previously undefeated race of superior, telepathic lizard like aliens - the problem remains of what to do with the settlers, still in stasis on the ships in nearby space. The decision to try to slowly absorb them into the population is a brave one and a selection of sleepers, mostly scientists, are chosen to be the first to be woken and invited to stay, if the can be persuaded that the earthlings are not inferior animals but the measure of, or superior to themselves. Things seem to be going quite well, until the unexpected arrival of their Emperor is announced. He had escaped an invasion of his own planet, leaving his people to the aliens arriving there ... And Whotsit might just have found a girlfriend!
This book is great fun as the reader is reunited with some of the characters from book one. Mr.McKenzie, the easy going, down to earth engineer, is still in a love hate relationship with the egotistical, opinionated scientist, but together they get the science done. Filled with humour, quirky personalities, bombastic aliens, imaginative science and battles for survival, and with just a hint of political incorrectness, this is a light, enjoyable listen. John Pirhalla is again narrating, his easy on the ear voice this time seemingly more involved in the action rather than recording it as if from a news reporting delivery. His reading is well paced with nicely nuanced phrasing and intonation, helping to bring the story to life.
Perhaps not as action packed or gripping as some military science fiction, Dawn of Chrysalis is certainly still an attention holder, more in a comic book style, with clever ideas and some mind bending tools of domination. Good fun.
Great addition to the series. This book was just as good as the first if not better. I could go on and on about this book and series…bottom line. It's definitely worth your time and credit. The story pulls you in immediately and keeps your attention until the end. It's a well written, very entertaining story that flows smoothly with great characters, plenty of action and suspense, a few surprises and a little humor along the way. On top of that it has fantastic narration. What else can you ask for.
It's a series that I would recommend. Start with the first book in the series. Sometimes you can jump into a series in the middle and be fine. Even though the author gives you a kind of recap woven into the first chapter filling you in on some details, it's worth it to listen to the whole series.
The story is full of great well rounded characters although I have to say Whatsit is my favorite. He is a larger than life character. McPhearson is a close tie. You can't help but love that Scottish sense of humor and sarcasm.
Who pulled your chain chatty Kathy. the humor came at the most unexpected times and was delivered spot on. I burst out laughing several times and received some strange looks.
A new threat is on the horizon just adding to the suspense of what will happen next. It does end a bit of a cliffhanger setting up the next book which I am really looking forward to.
John Pirhalla did a fantastic job with the narration. Nice voice that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Great character voices. Perfect tone and delivery of the humor. He brought the characters and story to life through his narration. Very enjoyable.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily provided this review.
Dawn of Chrysalis: The Origin of F.O.R.C.E., Book 2 is a fun, easy listen for fans of soft sci-fi (Hard science fiction is a category of science fiction characterized by an emphasis on scientific accuracy, this book is the opposite of that).
As someone who did not read the previous book in this series, There are a couple back stories that I feel I would have a more in-depth understanding of but I did not ever feel that I was ever lost or missing information needed for the enjoyment of this book. Since I did not read book 1 though I cannot state where this picks up exactly. I found the characters humorous and entertaining, I especially liked Whatsit!
The one thing I would say could have been better is that I felt like the humans were a little too "Mary Sue" in that there was not really any situation where it seemed the odds stacked against them or there was real danger as they seemed to figure an easy way out of most situations and be smarter, stronger, and faster than any enemies they faced.
The narration by John Pirhalla was done well making this an enjoyable read. I would definitely be interested in listening to more books by this author and/or narrator!
Although this is the second book the storyline can be picked up fairly easy , what helps makes this is its quite a character and science driven novel. The characters and storyline are very well thought out and executed with quite a bit of humour which makes them all the more realistic and endearing to you. Narration also works out well and the blend of the two makes this a great listen. I will definitely be making the next book a must buy.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This was a good novel. I enjoyed the story and the writing was really good. I did feel like I suffered for not having read book one in this series, and I didn’t feel massively connected to the characters.
I finally got to read the second book of The Origin of F.O.R.C.E. Dawn of Chrysalis. I really enjoyed the first novel by Sam B. Miller II and was looking forward to this one. Since this book is a continuation it would make more since if you read the first book. This book brings us to the time when the alien mother ship arrives after sending scoots seventy years previous. The sole survivor “Whatsit, has helped the humans prepare for an evasion of earth. He continues to enlighten us with his humor in this book also. The two characters I enjoy most in this book are the mousy, Doctor Heinbaum and the huge Scottish Captain McPherson. One tries to show he is superior because of his intelligence and the other believes the size and physical abilities is the manliest trait. Through their continual debates they discover the secret to the Chrysalis’s ability to light speed is a controlled black hole. My favorite quote in the book is: “Humans don’t easily accept authority. In fact, the harsher the punishment for disobedience, the more unruly the blasted creatures become!
THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THE AUDIOBOOK This is the the second book of The Origin of F.O.R.C.E. Dawn of Chrysalis. I really enjoyed listening although I didn't have the first novel by Sam B. Miller II and was able to follow the story. i It would make more clear if I read the first book. I received a free copy of the audiobook courtesy of AudioBookBoom.
