This was a pretty middle of the road title that never quite achieved the promise I thought I saw when I read Titans: Rebirth #1.
Once you get past that initial (very cool) issue when the original Wally West makes his stunning reappearance to his Titan friends, the story starts petering out a bit.

description

Abra Kadabra as the main villain? Eh. Sometimes it works out when they pull an obscure/silly bad guy out and give them an update. Turn them darker, more dangerous, whatever.
I'm just not 100% convinced it worked this time.
Abra Kadabra came here from the future because he wanted...wait for it, wait for it...
FANS. <--ta-da!
Yes. For some reason in his future, everything is all science-y and nobody appreciates his stage magic act. So, of course, his solution is to travel back in time to get the adulation he deserves.
Ok, he does seem to be really powerful in this one.
BUT.
I mean, he's using puppets and elaborate Scooby-Doo traps to taunt and torment the Titans.
Seriously? Ugh.

description

Once again, I was hoping for a bit more of the Smily Face Button story, especially since Wally features heavily in the Titans and his return ushered in Rebirth.
And, once again, I was pretty disappointed.
There's a teeeeeeny reference towards the end, but nothing to make it worth my while.

description

It wasn't awful, just...eh.
Plus, if you aren't a really big fan of Wally and Flash stories, you may not like this at all. There are definitely cooler members of the group that will hopefully be the focus of the next few volumes, but (like the title suggests) this one is all about West.

description

Also, don't confuse this with the Teen Titans title that's out there now. I believe this is an attempt to keep everyone happy by showcasing a younger group and also keeping some of the favorite older Titans together. <-- as two different teams
It's honestly not a bad idea and, if nothing else, I applaud DC for trying to keep all their fans happy.

ARRRGH!!! WHY, why does (practically) every Rebirth book have to be so bad!? T’ain’t fair I tells ya (sobs)! Oh my god alright, let’s do it again!

Even though the Teen Titans have been teens for decades at this point, NOW they’re slightly older so as to no longer be teens - they’re just Titans (because Damian Wayne’s leading the new Teen Titans in a separate Rebirth title). Not that the distinction matters as this is basically a Flash book with cameos from the Titans!

Following on from DC Universe Rebirth #1, pre-New 52 Wally West is back and just as bland as ever. That’s exciting for some people apparently. After reuniting with his teammates, they fight an evil magician called (wait for it) Abra Kadabra. Faceplants all round! Dan Abnett tanked Aquapants Rebirth and now it’s the Titan's turn!

I defy anyone to tell me the difference between the personalities of Barry Allen Flash and Wally West Flash. They are two sides of the same boring coin. When they’re not being stunningly dull “good guys saving the world with their teammates, they’re in love with women who’re also journalists. They even say the same corny line: “My name is Barry Allen/Wally West. I’m the fastest man alive! Drop dead, the pair of you.

Speaking of corny: that storyline. Abra Kadabra the Magician. I mean, really. A professional writer came up with that, guys. This is why people who read non-pitcher books look down on superhero comics and, if they were all like this, I’d say they have a point! Abra Kadabra wants everyone to know his name so he decides to fight the Titans with mirror versions of them. It’s good superhero vs evil superhero, one of the most generic, uninspired, by-the-numbers storylines there are.

Did someone say generic? I give you Brett Booth’s unmemorable art! Yeah it’s slick but so is diarrhea. And of course this being a Flash story, the finale involves Flash running right quick to save the day. Real original, Dan Abnett, and SO tense and exciting - gosh, I wonder if Flash will be fast enough this time?!?!? The very minor Watchmen mystery references sprinkled throughout were not worth wading through this slop for.

The Return of Wally West was horrible across the board. That’s it, I’m never reading another Teen Titans or Flash comic again - I think I hate the Flash at this point! Rebirth? More like Afterbirth! Have I made that joke before? Ah, I don’t care, it’s true anyway! Birthing pains is there a funny there? Are those my brains oozing out of my ears? Good, I wanna die after reading these terrible comics!

This was so good omg!

So we have the return of wally and I love how his friends remember him and yeah it uses similar tropes but who cares and then having the villain be Abra Kadabra, one of the Flash's arch-nemesis I will say especially after this story and how he and his fake titans pose a challenge to the current titans is amazing and I love how its written, establishing the confusing history of these characters and the timeline shenanigans especially going on with Dr Manhattan and all and hinting towards it but mostly giving us a story of Titans vs this insane villain with Wally at the centre and how he is ready to sacrifice everything to save his friends, its just mind boggling and great in that sense and I also love the way Linda is involved, it makes it so more personal and tragic and the ending kinda breaks your heart but in goood way!

One of the best volumes DC has done and reinvigorates the team for the better, establishing great dynamics but its the art of Booth which is a champion and its just way too good. A must must recommend!

I liked Dan Abnett's writing on the book. He gets that the Titans are a family. However, Brett Booth's art has gotten terrible. The faces are drawn too narrow. Kadabra's moustashe is like 3 feet long. There are so many special power effects on the page in some panels that you can't even see the art. The art is just a mess.

Received an advance copy from DC and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Wow...what happened here?

I really enjoyed the rebirth one shot. I was ready to really enjoy this. Then I read it and...blah.

The good is the chemistry between the Titans. They feel like friends. The banter and dialog overall was well done with them. I also really like Wally, he's great, and very different from Barry. So that's always a plus.

But the art in this was just okay. Felt very stilted at times. The main enemy was boring and silly. Like of all the villains to use we're going with Kadabra? Really? What a piece of shit choice. The biggest throw away for the Titans first arc. Oh and also the pacing was weird. Big baddie, owait let's stop and have a convo with my love, nope back to big bad, wait let's chill on couch for a minute. It was a mess.

Yeah, overall really disappointed with this one. I wanted SO much more for this. Owell, hope next arc is better.

Speeding into mediocrity, the start of Titans' Rebirth run overcomplicates itself with every possible trope it could: evil doppelgangers, time travel and a cheesy villain to name a few. However, Abnett does seem to understand the Titans' dynamic, and their familial relationship is the real highlight. Wally centric and decent enough, there's no wow factor to make it stand out, but it oozes character and dynamic potential.

Ugh. Here's the thing with DC comics in general, and the new Rebirth line in particular: they just don't give a shit about new readers. For a couple of years I've been trying to get into the lore of DC universe, to get to know their characters and big stories and such but it's an impossible task. The comics are either badly written, dated, or dependent on the pre-existing history, so it's an absolute nightmare to try and understand it all. Yes, there are some easy entry points for Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. But when you get to the characters like Titans (aren't they supposed to be Teen Titans? I have no idea), you either know everything about them already, or you're fucked.

So, people are gushing about this series. Naturally, I decided to give it a try. Rebirth is supposed to be a fresh start, right? Wrong. You see, Wally West is back and not just some regular schmo Wally West, it's the original one! Wait, what? Who the fuck is this guy? How should I know, I haven't been reading DC comics for decades to know that. But apparently it's exciting news, because it's the whole plot point, not just of the Titans, but of the whole Rebirth line. But he is the central character here, in this book.

So he's back. And apparently he was a member of the Titans, who are... some guys. They're a team! Anyway, Wally is back, he rejoins his already fully-formed team of superheroes who I've never heard about, they are all very happy, so now let's fight an evil guy called Abracadabra (yes, I'm not shitting you)! How do we know he's evil? Well, he is a magician who wears a tux, he has a mustache, and he likes to give long speeches about how evil he is. Are you bored already? Because I was.

Anyway, my point is, if you are new to (Teen?) Titans, if you don't give a shit about a villain called Abracadabra, and if you don't know the difference between the original and the modern (?) Wally West, this book is not for you. Don't trust the hype, it's a terrible run of the mill superhero book with almost zero plot, cringeworthy dialogues and annoying characters. Even the artwork is bad! Seriously, there are absolutely no redeeming qualities here if you are not sentimental about these characters, and I am definitely not.

2.5 stars.

Honestly, 2 stars are for the last issue and I give a half star for helping rid me of the nightmare that was Teen Titans: Year One.

This is a Rebirth series.

I say that first and foremost because I kept telling myself that as I suffered through dialogue that reiterated everyone's names about 100 times. They're doing that in case new readers forget the characters names once they turned the page. I get that. It's still incredibly annoying. So,

What I liked about this book:
- Donna got to kick ass for a few pages.
- I really liked Linda. This is my introduction to her because I don't read a lot of Flash comics and I really liked her character.
- I really enjoyed Wally. He was a surprisingly compelling aspect of that Rebirth event issue and I was still pulled into his story here.
- The last issue was really damn good. I actually felt the tension, the artwork really worked and I felt for Wally in that last moment.
- Dick lead with his ass in an attack and I found that to be a fascinatingly hilarious strategy.

What I didn't like:
- If I didn't know everyone's names before starting this, I sure as hell do now. It was egregious.
- The villains name was Kadabra. As in "Abra Kadabra" which I think loosely translates to "We half-assed it" in French? I could be wrong. My French is a little rusty.
- The villain was not intimidating at all.
- I shouldn't criticize this book for focusing on one character over the others. By comparison, Teen Titans did the same thing with Damian. The reason I felt this one a little more is that, while it made me want to read The Flash solo series, I kind of wanted more from this team because I don't know much about the members of this team. I've seen Donna before. I adore Dick Grayson and know a ton about him. I knew nothing about Tempest or Omen. I don't know much about Roy Harper. So, I can't knock it for picking a person to focus on but I wish there was more from the team in this book.
- Aside from that last issue, none of this really pulled me in. I don't know if I'd want to continue on with this series. From the reviews I've seen, it doesn't get any better from here.

I read this in single issues. Not published yet, but marking it read any way.

Wally West is back!

Although this volume could have moved at a better pace, the return of Wally West (the first one) in DC's Rebirth marked a monumental shift away from the dark and gritty New 52 to a more opportunistic vision of the DCU. Geoff Johns himself has said that he wanted to return Love to the DCU, and that's what happens here. Fighting against the odds, Wally must find a way to return from the Speed Force, when the woman he thought he loves, doesn't.

Villain Abra Kadabra is the man pulling the strings here, but Abnett makes it clear that someone else is pulling Kadabra's (perhaps unknowingly). AK is not my favorite Flash villain, but in a story about time travel, it makes sense for a guy from the future to be the baddie. Eventually, Wally and his fellow Titans find a way to defeat AK and keep Wally in the present permanently.

Artist Brett Booth is ok. Not a huge fan, but at least the art is consistent here. I love seeing the original Titans together again, even if they've changed, grown up, and and become mysteries (looking at you, Donna Troy). But, this is a Wally West book, and he takes center stage throughout. There's Deathstroke lurking in the background, and teases from DC that Bumblebee returns soon. All of this makes me a happy fanboy, and the news that DC will be collecting the remaining issues of the initial Teen Titans run has me dancing for joy. So glad to see my second favorite team of all time back again. Now, DC, where's the Legion of Super-Heroes?

I am so sad that I don't like this. I have a real soft spot for the Teen Titans, in all their incarnations. A book that reunites all the original Titans, including the long-lost Wally? It sounded like fun to me. And it starts off really well. The chemistry between the main characters is great. But then the story kicks in, and the explanation of what happened to Wally... Well, it's just crap. Abra Kadabra is an embarrassing first villain to have for a new book. This can't possibly be the best that either the original Titans or Flash has to offer. Add uninspiring art to the mix, and there really isn't much to recommend this series. I really wish that I could say otherwise.

I received this from Edelweiss and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this one. I've been a fan of the original Teen Titans for a long time, and still have several early issues from the late 60s. The strength of this series has always been the friendship between the team members, and that's used quite successfully in this first volume in DC's Rebirth event.

The writing was pretty good, though somewhat corny in places, and the artwork was very good. I definitely liked seeing the "new" team in their new uniforms facing the "old" team in their original costumes. I also liked the scene with Wally and Linda in "heaven", which reminded me a lot of a similar scene in the Star Trek movie, "Generations".

I'm interested to see where this series heads. Lots of clues in this volume about the future.

Glad to see that the Titans are back together. The Titans are very cool. Wonder how the other ten years of their life went. Hope they will have fun as a team again. Also hope that Linda will be able to remember Wally.

Can't wait to read Titans, volume 2!!!!

Wally was gone. But now he's back! Oh no, now he's gone again! But yay, now he's back!

Wally West gave me a bit of whiplash here, but I think he's finally back for good.

I have to say, I kind of found this volume boring. Kadabra is a bit of a doofus, albeit a powerful one that messes up Wally's life (i.e. a handy Rebirth explanation). Surprisingly, the only thing I kinda liked about this was Roy Harper crushing on Donna Troy. It was the first time I've ever read anything with Roy in it where he's not a huge creeper! Go, Roy!

Also, I've never heard of a Lilith before (Lilith Clay = Jean Grey?), but statistically speaking how is it possible that there are THREE redheads on a team of six?!?! Boggles my mind.

2.5 for a not the best Vol 1, but also, not the worst.

Whenever I write a review I try really hard not to get too excited. I mean, I’m suppose to not go all fanboy crazy and start jumping up and down about how awesome the Teen Titans is or how awesome Flash is. But this time I’m not going to be cool about this book. Nope, I am going to let you know how I really feel.

description

Yeah, I love this book. Rebirth-ing the Titans might have been the best thing DC has ever done. Wally West is back again! And the Titans . . . the real Teen Titans are back together again. Absolutely awesome!

It all starts with Wally back in Keystone City. Our long lost hero discovering that his buddies the Titans (Nightwing, Donna Troy, Arsenal, Garth, and Lilith) do not know who he is. Actually, they think he is a villain and want to take him down . . . hard.

But Wally discovers a way to bring their memories back. And once he does it is like old times all over again. Our team of friends having a great big group hug, remembering all the great times they had together!

After getting reacquainted, our force of heroes head out to hunt down the villain who trapped Wally in the Speed Force to begin with. Their task complicated by this evil one awakening from his own banishment and deciding that he is going to finish what he started years ago: kill Wally West!

What did I like about this graphic novel? Everything! This one was amazing from beginning to end. The art was great. Wally’s new suit looks cool. The story was exciting with a good villain, nice twists, and good fights. But the best thing about Titans was the friendship of these heroes; their bond so believable, their memories so real, and their desire to protect one another so easy to see that I wanted to go get into that group hug.

description

Usually, I say what I didn’t like about a story. Don’t need to do that this time, because there wasn’t anything I didn’t like. This story was amazing.

Titans: The Return of Wally West was really, really good. I have a feeling these guys are going to be my new favorite super hero team. And I’m telling all of you to go get a copy of this now, because it is too good to miss!

Well, I hope you liked this review, and friend me any time to talk about my reviews or comic books.

Second book for #gettinggraphic ! This one was a little slow in the beginning although I really enjoyed the artwork. I found it extremely interesting that we're looking at some issues with time when it comes to the characters however it does make it a little confusing. This is my first time ever reading something that deals with the adult Titans but I must say I think I liked it enough to pick up the next volume. I'm just intrigued by the whole process of where rebirth is going to take us as comic book readers.

Wally West should be protected at all costs and also I love this team so much their friendship gives me ALL THE FEELS.

Note I will say the villain was kinda sad and his vendetta for Wally was a bit...dramatic but I just loved seeing the former Teen Titans being together and I am very sappy over them.

Good in concept, poor execution.

World: The art is fine but I don't like Booth's art as I find that the characters are often in weird bodily positions and the boob push is popular. I also find that his character's facial expressions are always a bit off and the eyes are dead eyes which make it kinda creepy. The world building on face value is great cause we are bringing the original Teen Titans together. However I felt that the world needed further expanding and actual info dumping because new readers will not know the significance of this making the reunion mean more to the creative team than the readers. The stuff with ties to Rebirth is also good. But this book needs to slow down.

Story: The story in premise is fine, but the writing really let the story down. This book moves fast but not really. There is a lot of stuff going on at once and alot of fights and action but the story is also draggy in dragging the villain story this arc to 6 issues. The things that this book focuses on is not the things that are needed. The core of the team and the small moments and emotions should be what is needed for this first arc. Introduce readers to this team and also why they mean so much to each other, but we don't get it, we get a really shortened "you have to accept it" kind of framing and they are off to the races. But the races is slow and draggy as the pacing of the arc is painfully slow and could have been donw in 4 issues. The other 2 issues could have been used all for character development. Yeah this book really needs to slow down. I didn't care about Wally and his relationships with the Titans and the Titans to each other cause we never get to feel any of that we just need to accept it and therefore the end completely falls flat. Also the Linda Wally relationship is creepily bad and poorly written. The dialog is so wooden the premise is just creepy and in the end Linda and her response is just...no....this is not good at all "oh my, this stalker is kinda cool...and for the sake of my career I'll just be really stupid and dive into something like this...anything for an exclusive" no...that's poor writing.

Characters: The characters, and there are a lot, don't really get to develop, we get really surface ideas of what they are and what they mean to each other and that's about it. This book needed to slow down and let readers feel the same things that the creative team is trying to have readers feel. Here we end up with a whole lot of empty emotions that don't pay off and are unearned. The villain was also a drag and took too long to deal with, we didn't need 6 issues of him. The Wally Linda thing I've said above already, it's creepy and flawed and just poorly written. There is no chemistry there and it's painful to read (it is just like the Iris Wally relationship in the Flash book now...why are both writers unable to write a relationship that's believeable).

Yeah, this book was not what I expected and it should have been so much more. This is similar in quality to Blue Beetle and not Super Sons which got heart and emotions to spare.

Onward to the next book!

'Titans, Volume 1: The Return of Wally West' by Dan Abnett brings Wally West back into the DC Universe. I'm not familiar with where he was before, but this is still a pretty good story.

Wally West is back, but no one remembers who he is. This includes his old teammates, who have dropped the Teen in their name and just go by Titans, and it also includes the woman he loves. Who or what is behind this is one of the Flash's oldest enemies. This enemy has devised a plot that could trap the Flash in the Speed Force forever. Will the Flash disappear again or can his old friends help him?

The villain turns out to be a bit ridiculous, but the story moves along at a good pace. I hadn't been familiar with what led up to this point, but I felt like it got explained well enough. The moral of the story was a bit sappy, but I liked it. I'm glad I got to read it.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I....um....yeah.

So this was a thing. I do feel for Wally West. He'll never be Barry Allen, and this is another episode in the 'we kinda had to for continuity' Rebirth run.
Nightwing is wasted in this issue (I never thought I'd say that) and is far better served by his stand-alone issue.

Unlike Supes, some of the Batman titles, and WW, this isn't a title I'll be adding to a grab list any time soon.

3.5 is more like it, but since no half stars... This was a good story for the most part, but it was a little Wally centric, not that I dislike him it's just, this is a team ya know. And the main villain was kinda lame...
The art was pretty good as well, and I did enjoy seeing the friendships. The rest of the series should be prtty good, I would imagine, as they branch out into the other characters.

Titans jsou vcelku fajn týmovka a překvapivě důležitá série (minimálně tenhle book) pro Rebirth než by se mohlo zdát. Osobně mě mrzí, že Wally West kterého mám rád nedostal vlastní řadu kde by svůj návrat rozebíral protože místy to působí hrozně nataženě.

I read a digital copy of this that I got from DC through Netgalley.com in return for an honest review.

I'm still trying to make my way through all of the different New 52 series and wasn't planning on reading any of the Rebirth books yet, but when you get the opportunity to read something free before its release, why not? This is one of the Rebirth books I was most excited for. That's mainly because of Donna Troy, Nightwing, and the artist, Brett Booth. I know many other people were excited for this one because of Wally West, but not me. I've never been much of a Wally fan. DC's decision to kill off Barry Allen and make Wally the Flash waaaaaaay back in the day is one of the things that made me stop reading DC completely back in the 1990's. Dick Grayson as Nightwing was familiar to me before reading the New 52, but most of my experience with the character before that was back when he was still Robin. I loved the character back then and grew up reading him. I fell back in love with the character during New 52 and couldn't wait to read what was in store for him in Rebirth.

Writer Dan Abnett's story starts off with Wally having been trapped in the Speed Force for a long time. Someone made Wally disappear and also made everyone that he knew forget about him. (This is what caused the New 52 universe and why the real Wally West never made an appearance in that universe.) In the DC Universe: Rebirth one-shot that took place prior to this book, Barry Allen someone remembered Wally, maybe both of their connections to the Speed Force, and pulled Wally from it. After that Wally went to find the rest of his friends and see if they would remember him too. One by one Wally gets the Titans to remember him. They had all come together in a series near the end of New 52 called Titans Hunt, something I still haven't read, and were all in the same place so he didn't have to do much to find them all.

The Titans had already known that something was off about their lives, but they had no idea what it was. Wally coming back gave them a clue and they set out trying to find out who was responsible. Omen probes Wally's mind to see if she can recover anything from his memory while Arsenal and Donna hit the streets looking for more clues. Omen senses something in Wally's mind, but can't quite get the full picture. She just knows that she awakened something or someone with her probe and the Titans need to head to a certain place to find out who or what is responsible.

When the Titans arrive, they find the villain responsible is Abra Kadabra, a techno mage from the future. When Kadabra made Wally disappear, the spell rebounded and wiped his memory as well. He only came back because of what Omen saw in Wally's mind. Now Kadabra is hell-bent on succeeding where he failed the first time.

Abnett's plot is good, but the dialogue between the Titans is the highlight of the writing. To me, Scott Lobdell is the master of the team comic and writes dialogue for a close knit group of people better than anyone. Abnett isn't quite on Lobdell's level, but he has done a fantastic job of showing how much these characters care about each other. These characters have long histories with each other. The writing shows how well Abnett knows and understands that fact. The writing aspect of the book gets 4/5 stars.

As I stated in my introduction, artist Brett Booth was a main reason I was excited for this book. Booth is one of the top 10 best artists of the past 20-25 years. Jim Lee may be my favorite comic artist of all time, but Booth is right up there with Lee. Anything Brett Booth draws is absolutely fantastic looking. This is the epitome of what comic art should look like. Art gets a perfect 5/5 stars.

My final score for this book is 4.5 stars out of 5. This is an extremely promising start to DC's Rebirth. I haven't read very much with all of these characters together before. Hell, I had no clue who Omen and Garth were prior to picking up this book. I haven't read the miniseries that leads directly into this book either. If I can jump into this series and pick up what is going on, pretty much anyone should be able to. If you like any of these characters, definitely pick this one up. Even if you've never read books about any of the characters before, but you are interested in giving them a chance, this is as good of a place to start as any.
