Adolf 1: A Tale of the Twentieth Century

Rate this book
This drama began on the eve of World War II with three men named Adolf. The fate of Adolf Hitler, the dictator of the evil Third Reich, we know, but Tezuka's series continued after the war, following the other two Adolfs -- one the son of a baker, a German Jew; the other the son of a gentile German diplomat.

Dr. Osamu Tezuka (ÊÖ‰VÖγæ) was a Japanese manga artist, animator, producer and medical doctor, although he never practiced medicine. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he is best known as the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. He is often credited as the "Father of Anime", and is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during his formative years. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga" and "the God of Manga."

This manga series surprised me a lot, as it delivered more than I'm used to expect from this genre. It started as a murder mystery, and everything led me to think it'd be only that: a mystery tale woven round the most infamous figure from WWII.

in French, the series was entitled The history of the three Adolfs, which I found too unsubtle and spoon-feeding the reader unnecessarily, although it's not particularly spoilery given it's already revealed in the blurb that the plot is a story with three protagonists that share the name Adolf: the first, the ¹ó¨¹³ó°ù±ð°ù, the second a half-German/half-Japanese boy, and the third a Japan-raised Jewish-German boy. All three are linked through a fourth protagonist, Japanese journalist Sohei Toge, who is unwillingly thrown into a series of disastrous events surrounding the hunt for some documents that are so damning for the Nazis that it's sent the Soviets, the French, the Americans, and the Gestapo after him to get their hands on the papers to use for their own ends. I won't spoil what the contents of those documents are, just say that it's based on a rumour about Hitler that's been deemed a dubious myth, but that Tezuka chose to take and run with to write this story. So, those who might feel inclined to cry historical inaccuracy should know this is a creative licence and not an error.

It surprised me a little that my favourite from the story ended up being the second Adolf, who's not a good apple exactly but sure as rain is the most complicated character. He begins as the innocent child of a German diplomat and a Japanese lady, whose closest friend is a Jewish boy he goes to school with in Kobe. After the death of his father, a member of the Nazi Party, he's sent kicking and screaming to the Adolf Hitler Schule in Germany, the preparatory academy run by the Hitlerjugend to educate future members of the SS and the Gestapo. The way he is "educated" and indoctrinated is horrifying to witness because you see how pure he starts off and you know how this will end if he's made into a full-blown fanatic, but at the same time it was fascinating to see his evolution. It's the first time I've read a stage-by-stage complete arc dealing with the creation of a Nazi from a malleable little boy in the Hitlerjugend to a brutal °¿²ú±ð°ù²õ³Ù³Ü°ù³¾´Ú¨¹³ó°ù±ð°ù in the Reich's security services. Other examples in fiction that I've found usually haven't been stage-by-stage but focus on just a time window and sum up the rest, such as when they show you the blank slate boy so you can see how sweet he is, and then jump forward and show you again the same boy years later with SS rank insignia; but don't show you what happened in-between, how come he was corrupted, etc.

It's a very pyschological evolution, Tezuka obviously had a field day exploring it with Adolf Kaufmann. It can get dark and cynical at times, but the story is by no means grim and bleak. There's moments of hilarity and clowning round, mainly with Sohei Toge, and moments of integrity and courage, mostly with the Kamil family and Miss Ogi, the boys' former schoolteacher. There's also romance, not as bright and full of rainbows and flowers because it's wartime and because of the stuff brought about by espionage, but it's there. I didn't like much a couple developments in the last issue (my copy was the 5-issue edition), but overall I have almost nothing to complain about and wish more manga had the quality of this one.

Who said Graphic Novels can't be entertaining AND educating? In Osamu Tezuka's "Adolf" Series, you get deep insights into the Japan's History in WWII, the Axis Berlin-Rome-Tokyo, the rise of the NSDAP and tidbits about Hitlers biography. History will never get more gripping.
On the other hand, you have three protagonists named Adolf: a little German boy, and a little Jewish boy - both living in Japan and witnessing the start of the war. The lives of these two fictional characters are wonderfully entwined with the documented life of the other Adolf: the ¹ó¨¹³ó°ù±ð°ù.
Tezuka - rightfully so called the GOD of MANGA - managed a breathtaking All-in-One:
His "Adolf" series are deeply emotional, very educating, extremely suspense-packed and beautifully drawn.

An acclaimed novel by one of the founders of Manga. Understanding that this was a more adult themed book than Astro Boy, I approached this book with an open mind and some interest in how Germany and the axis alliance of WWII was viewed by Japanese. My disappointment with this book will keep me from reading any further in the series.

The slow development of the plot through this volume is only the smallest of the many problems I had with how Tezuka approached this story. Like other Japanese fiction, there is a strong seam of sentimentality and an attempt to simplify a complex world through the viewpoint of the children in the story. In this book that leads to the uncomfortable juxtaposition of scenes of idealized boyhood friendships with scenes of rape and suicide and murder. This book is very unkind to its female characters, and the motive for that violence appears to be only to mark the book as an adult story because it rarely moves the story forward. For their part, the male characters are stereotypes lifted from 1940s war films. I had the feeling that Tezuka flattened the adult characters down to highlight the boys, who are themselves stock characters taken from Tezuka's own work.

Then there is the supposed mystery of Hitler's Jewish ancestry. This is a very weak hook to hang a novel on since those rumors have always revolved around the man, dating as far back as the 1920s and the publication of Mein Kampf. Given the strength and momentum of the German Nazi Party in the late-1930s and the willingness of the German people to close their eyes to even more obvious lies and manipulations, the idea that any evidence short of a letter by Hitler himself claiming his Jewish ancestry would be considered a threat is kind of silly.

Anyway, a passable potboiler if not the manga classic I was hoping for.

One of the most accomplished works of Osamu Tezuka is the series ¡°Adolf,¡± a historical drama that imagines epic events behind the horrors of WWII.

The story opens in Germany during the 1936 Olympics games with two boys named Adolf. One, Kamil, is a Jewish son of a baker. The other, Kaufmann, a half Japanese son of a Nazi diplomat. The boys become best friends just as anti-Semitism is sweeping over the world. Deadly circumstances are about to get in the way of friendship.

Meanwhile a Japanese reporter named Toge begins investigating the murder of his brother, a murder that seems to be connected with something enormous.

This first volume flows strongly, the deep characterization getting support from chilling historical events. The rise of totalitarianism imprints itself as a menacing, suffocating echo in every panel, our knowledge of where we¡¯re headed rendering the narrative even more power. Tezuka- who lived through the war himself- manages to write an entertaining noir mystery within all the gravitas of the subject matter in a way that doesn¡¯t feel at all cheap or ill-fitting.

'Adolf' is another great graphic novel from the acclaimed manga artist Osamu Tezuka (liked his Buddha earlier). It is in five parts and tells the story of three people named Adolf and how their destinies are intertwined. One of them is expectedly Adolf Hitler, the other two are Adolf Kauffman, the son of a Nazi officer and Adolf Kamil, son of a Jewish baker. Both Kauffman and Kamil spend their childhoods is Japan and grow to be close friends. Their paths are separated when Kauffman is forcefully sent by his father to join Hitler youth. With time, he is groomed into a ruthless Nazi and becomes one of Hitler's trusted associates. Kamil, on the other hand is drawn into the Jewish resistance of which his father is also a part. The story also traces a mysterious document which is related to the origins of Hitler, something that can bring down the Nazi regime. There are many important characters in the plot. Among them Sohei Toge, a reporter is another main protagonist, who finally writes this whole memoir. The imagery is impactful, especially the expression of human emotions and the devastations of war (World War II).

There are a lot of things to take back from this work, the uncanny similarity with our present for one. It shows how the young were brainwashed into hating Jews from an early age, in the Hitler schools; how the persecution of Jews was normalized. It also shows how a 'larger than life' image was created for Adolf Hitler, which he himself believed in, till the end. There are a lot of such aspects, which would ring a bell for a conscious reader.

This has the traditional style of manga, which is to be read from right to left. It is not that difficult, once one gets used to it. This was my final read for 2020 or rather the last book completed. Certainly a memorable one.

A classic tale about Nazism, but this time from a Japanese point of view. Unfortunately, the new setting does not save it from many of the same tropes - bad, Jewish-hating Nazis are bad and the SS is really bad. I guess that was the reality of life then, who am I to complain if art about that time is repetitive?

I really appreciate the brevity and ease that comes with reading comics/manga. I'm giving it a three because it was a quick read, and quite gripping despite the recurrent narrative. I'll probably read the sequel.

A prayer at a funeral gave me pause for thought: "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me, for whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?"

Mayat sang adik dilenyapkan begitu saja.

Yah..semoga nemu lanjutannya dah...

This was a Japanese manga book that told a story of 3 different people named Adolf at the time of WW2. Their stories are all entwined and have to do with the Nazi party.
I thought it was really interesting to read about Germans living in Japan and in China. It also depicted just how absurd and cannibalistic the Nazi party is when it comes to rumors and conspiracies.

Well-plotted and exciting, the first installment of this manga series sets up the story well. There is quite a lot of historical detail, and aspects of Japanese society, such as the left-wing resistance to the war, make this book different to many others of its type.
