104听books96听followersNina Nikolayevna Berberova was a Russian writer who chronicled the lives of Russian exiles in Paris in her short stories and novels. She visited post-Soviet Russia and died in Philadelphia.
Born in 1901 to an Armenian father and a Russian mother, Nina Berberova was brought up in St Petersburg.[1] She left Russia in 1922 with poet Vladislav Khodasevich (who died in 1939). The couple lived in several European cities before settling in Paris in 1925. There Berberova began publishing short stories for the Russian emigre publications Poslednie Novosti ("The Latest News") and Russkaia Mysl鈥� ("Russian Thought"). The stories collected in Oblegchenie Uchasti ("The Easing of Fate") and Biiankurskie Prazdniki ("Billancourt Fiestas") were written during this period. She also wrote the first book length biography of composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1936, which was controversial for its openness about his homosexuality. In Paris she was part of a circle of poor but distinguished visiting literary Russian exiles which included Anna Akhmatova, Vladimir Nabokov, Boris Pasternak, Tsvetaeva and Mayakovsky.
After living in Paris for 25 years, Berberova emigrated to the United States in 1950 and became an American citizen in 1959. She began her academic career in 1958 when she was hired to teach Russian at Yale. She continued to write while she was teaching, publishing several povesti (long short stories), critical articles and some poetry. She left Yale in 1963 for Princeton, where she taught until her retirement in 1971. In 1991 Berberova moved from Princeton, New Jersey to Philadelphia.
Berberova鈥檚 autobiography, which details her early life and years in France, was written in Russian but published first in English as The Italics are Mine (Harcourt, Brace & World, 1969). The Russian edition, Kursiv Moi, was not published until 1983.

VITA IN OMBRA
Mi sembrava di vedere la vita andare avanti senza di me, attaccare e macinare gli essere umani, senza prendermi, qualunque cosa facessi per impormi.
Le colpe dei padri ricadono sui figli.
In questo caso, sono quelle della madre.
E la colpa che a San Pietroburgo le si addita 猫 quella di concepire una figlia senza essere sposata, e di farlo con un uomo molto pi霉 giovane di lei, addirittura un suo studente.
Insegnante di piano, perde tutti gli studenti. Le male lingue, si sa.
La donna incanala ogni speranza di riscatto nella figlia, dalla quale si aspetta una brillante carriera pianistica.
Ma la giovane Sone膷ka non riesce a mantenere le aspettative materne. E accumula vergogna, senso di inadeguatezza.
Sentimenti destinati a gonfiarsi e racchiudersi in un altro, anche pi霉 consumante: l鈥檌nvidia. Che sviluppa quando trova lavoro come accompagnatrice al piano di una celebre cantante, Marija.
Il successo e la bravura di Marija rendono ancora pi霉 dolorosa e pietosa la posizione di Sone膷ka che nonostante i palcoscenici sempre pi霉 importanti, fino ad arrivare a Parigi, sente di vivere quanto mai nell鈥檕mbra.
A rimarcare al primo sguardo la differenza tra le due donne basta dire che Marija 猫 bella, allegra, felice, in salute, buona, generosa: mentre Sone膷ka, cresciuta tra stenti e difficolt脿, 猫 magra, scialba, povera.
E io mi sentivo sempre pi霉 sbiadita davanti a lei, che diventava sempre pi霉 grande come cantante e, fisicamente e spiritualmente, si avvicinava al punto focale della sua esistenza, punto che avrebbe saputo far durare a lungo, grazie all鈥檌ntelligenza, alla bellezza e alla bravura.
In forma di memorie 猫 la stessa Sone膷ka a raccontarci tutto in prima persona, ben attenta a ogni passaggio psicologico: e infatti queste cento paginette brillano per sottigliezza di introspezione.
Invece di tenere stretta la posizione e il lavoro che le sta regalando una nuova vita migliore della precedente, l鈥檌nvidia spinge Sone膷ka a desiderare la rovina di Marija, cosa che se dovesse accadere trascinerebbe anche la narratrice.
Forse, se in quelle settimane, Marija Nikolaevna avesse mutato volto e anima, se avesse sofferto al punto che tutti, me compresa, avessero potuto notarlo, se si fosse ammalata o avesse perduto la voce 鈥� non so, forse mi sarebbe bastato. Invece non notavo niente, a parte una strana dolcezza e, ogni tanto, uno sguardo inquieto.
Il film del Claude Miller 猫 del 1992. Trasporta la vicenda dalla Russia del 1917-1919 alla Francia invasa dai nazisti, e lancia la figlia di un attore che ho sempre amato - che qui interpreta il marito di Marija, altro ruolo cruciale: lui 猫 Richard Bohringer, lei 猫 Romane Bohringer, all鈥檈poca appena diciannovenne. L鈥檕perazione riesce a questo regista scomparso troppo presto che ci ha regalato quel magnifico film intitolato Garde 脿 vue.
Non posso non pensare al film di Polanski tratto dal romanzo di Delphine de Vigan >D鈥檃pr猫s une histoire vraie 鈥� Quello che non so di lei.

Nacida en San Petersburgo en 1901, Nina Nerberova no obtuvo reconocimiento como escritora hasta que en 1984 esta novela fuera publicada en Francia, donde la autora goz贸 de un gran 茅xito. En Espa帽a, aunque se han publicado muchas de sus obras, algunas todav铆a accesibles, no ha tenido el reconocimiento que se merece鈥� al menos, a lo que yo alcanzo tras leer esta turbadora y excelente novela.
鈥淯n ser feliz vive como por encima de todos los dem谩s, y los aplasta un poco, naturalmente. Y ni siquiera esto hay que perdon谩rselo, porque lo tienen del mismo modo que se tiene la salud, o la belleza鈥� el asunto no est谩 en el nacimiento, sino en algo muy distinto鈥�Sonechka Antonovskaia, pianista acompa帽ante de una cantante de 茅xito, naci贸 pobre y con el terrible estigma de ser hija de madre soltera. Poquita cosa, fea y sin gracia, no llamaba la atenci贸n de nadie. La infelicidad era su destino, un destino que ella abraz贸 con desesperaci贸n.
鈥淓n todo mi alrededor estaba la gloria de otra, la belleza de otra, la felicidad de otra, y lo m谩s duro era que yo las sab铆a merecidas鈥�Sonechka descubre que la existencia puede ser otra cosa cuando entra a trabajar a las 贸rdenes de Mar铆a Nikolaevna Travina, una cantante l铆rica de cierto 茅xito y gran belleza que posee una capacidad innata para disfrutar de la vida. Tantas buenas cualidades reunidas en una misma persona eran demasiado para Sonechka: demasiado libre, demasiado segura de s铆 misma, Nikolaevna deb铆a comprender que su invulnerabilidad ten铆a un l铆mite. Este profundo odio que siente por su benefactora, la 煤nica persona que le ofreci贸 algo de cari帽o, lejos de intensificar su amargura, la sacude de su 鈥渄ulzona y fluida indiferencia por todo鈥�. Por fin, ella, la acompa帽ante, la segundona, la que nunca pudo tomar las riendas de su vida, va a ser la causa de algo.

Two lessons I have learnt from The Accompanist...
1.
Never underestimate inconspicuous books.
Nina Berberova鈥檚 novella (1936) made me think of a special sort of tea: at first it looks far from spectacular, like a tiny, dry ball, but when you drop it into boiling water, it gradually expands and resembles a lovely blooming flower. Don't be surprised if your imagination will be developing the condensed plot of The Accompanist long after you finish reading it and the questions the author poses will linger and grow in your head for many days. What were the characters鈥� real intentions? What was creeping in the shadow of the choices they made?

Never underestimate inconspicuous accompanists.
Sometimes accompanists might turn out to be more intriguing than those in the spotlight. Their mousy looks may conceal big secrets and passions. Sonechka is a good example. How fluid the distinction between an accompanist and a performer seems... It was so tempting to reverse these roles.
Nina Berberova depicts dramatic tension between the characters with subtlety. She wraps them with an intricate lace of understatements, ambiguities and nuances. At the same time, Sonechka, Maria, Pavel, Andrei and Ekaterina are people of flesh and blood and crude passions. They will puzzle you, maybe even infuriate you at times, but they won't leave you indifferent.

Questo romanzo breve di Nina Nikolaevna Berberova [1901-1993] riesce nell鈥檌ntento di raccontare il complicato legame che unisce una donna di spettacolo bella e sicura di s茅, corteggiata e ammirata, con la giovane, talentuosa musicista, bruttina e fisicamente insignificante, priva di qualsiasi sex appeal, che l鈥檃ccompagna al pianoforte negli spettacoli e che infine vive nella stessa casa dell鈥檃rtista: e se inizialmente il rapporto che lega la giovane musicista alla cantante 猫 fatto di riconoscenza e gratitudine per averla strappata a una vita di stenti e difficolt脿 quotidiane, successivamente si fanno lentamente ma inesorabilmente strada nel suo animo sentimenti di invidia e risentimento apparentemente ingiustificati che in maniera sotterranea ma insistente allontanano le due donne scavando un divario giorno dopo giorno pi霉 ampio tra di loro. Una storia psicologica raccontata con maestria e abilit脿 letteraria.

Sonetchka , d鈥檃bord fascin茅e par la finesse, le talent, la gentillesse et la beaut茅 de sa ma卯tresse, enrage 脿 l鈥檌d茅e que celle-ci 茅volue dans un monde si coup茅 du r茅el, fait de mets copieux et de soir茅es au coin du feu, alors qu鈥檈lle, fille sans p猫re qui vit seule avec sa m猫re dans la suie, n鈥檃 aucun connu que la mis猫re et la honte.
Pourtant pianiste virtuose, Sonetchka sait qu鈥檈lle ne pourra jamais pr茅tendre 脿 cette libert茅 l脿. 脌 ce luxe.
En filigrane, c鈥檈st toute la violence de la r茅volution russe qui sourd.
Dans la Russie blanche et froide de 1919, puis dans le gris paris de f茅vrier 1920, l鈥檋茅ro茂ne, qui n鈥檈st justement jamais l鈥檋茅ro茂ne de sa propre vie, qui n鈥檃 jamais aim茅 ni 茅t茅 aim茅e par une autre personne que sa m猫re, qui se sent laide et inutile, fomente des plans qui n鈥檃boutissent pas, jalouse puis admire puis jalouse sa ma卯tresse, la d茅vore des yeux, la suit, l鈥檈spionne, jusqu鈥櫭� d茅couvrir un secret qui laisse pressentir un drame terrible.
Sonetchka est une h茅ro茂ne qui ne d茅sesp猫re pas, un jour, d鈥櫭猼re essentielle 脿 quelqu鈥檜n. Au del脿 d鈥檈xister dans les yeux d鈥檜n homme, elle r锚ve, surtout, d鈥櫭猼re le centre de sa propre vie, dont elle se sent spectatrice.

No matter how many times people tell me that a worm could never aspire to world greatness, I'll never stop waiting and telling myself: you can't die, can't let up, not as log as one person is still walking on this earth. There is still one debt which, maybe, one day, you will recover... If there is a God.
Nina Berberova missed the first crawl. If she would lift up the ends of her ill fitting dress the knees should be blackened with fate. Not a too close call with a brighter star. Sonechka is born under the sign of a secret life lived before you. Her mother, the popular piano teacher, will say "This is my daughter" when her embracing students ask who is this little girl, now nine years old. I wonder what the little face looked like before, hiding behind curtain skirt hems. Born under the planet of her thirty year old mother had her first love in her nineteen year old student. Hiding behind do not disturb white flags. She must have loved him to have finally known this. Sonechka is carried around in a kangaroo's pouch of hide from the wishing stars in bastard's shame. They move to Petersburg when all of the students cannot love their beloved music teacher any longer. I missed the heart beat of every day her mother lives alone. How bright did she burn when she loved. The little and ugly Sonechka is the year of the dog of beg for scraps, the year of hide under the table, the year of tail between your legs. Berberova misses when the girl who professes herself to be loved by her mother with a pathetic gap is not the child of love. The pathetic gap is a more visible dark hole to me than all other locked doors to her. She has nothing to do with them. Her mother's favorite and sole loyal student is a musical genius. Dismissed by Sonechka he still orbits the musical 'verse the young, but nothing else, woman does for nothing else. Berberova missed the crawl of every day when she attends the conservatory and is not special. This oily genius asks her in the end is she not ashamed to be merely playing music in a theater when apparently everyone had had such high hopes for her. No one ever had high hopes for her! It sounds like a mouth born tasting bitterness. It is Soviet Russia and you wake up to wait in line for food. Your mouth is formed too dry to swallow pride. The girl writes about herself that she is not beautiful, she is not smart. She has nothing to recommend herself. It sounds like someone who gives their last name or serial number. I feel that it would have been sushi guts to swallow every day if it had always been that way. It was always that way. Sonechka isn't the ugly girl only when she gets a job as an accompanist to the glamorous Maria Nikolaevna. The desire to get even with the beautiful woman who appears to her first in pink stockings and it must have been lingerie. The girl is too mesmerized to know what it is she is seeing. She has lovers and a husband and Sonechka insists with screwed eyes fury that her husband couldn't allow himself to be taken over by them. She cries and she feels a gnawing inside. It isn't for the husband that she feels betrayed. She only wants the secure world to crumble. It wouldn't mean that she was nothing if someone else couldn't be born such a something. There are teeth chewing her soul and eating her heart and she doesn't understand why, though she says that she does. I didn't care if the husband found out that his wife had a lover. If Maria was beautiful and everything would work out for her as it would to a person who was born healthy and beautiful and happy that they couldn't even question it. Her job playing piano for the singer didn't matter. That she felt ugly and little and twisted by her side. She has nothing of her own and has no language to ask for what it is that she wants. I felt it was more important that she is born like a baby without eyes than the dazzling everything of the singer. Maria Nikolaevna is boring to me. I didn't really care about Sonechka either. I felt that I should have been able to feel her ugly girls pain inside my own ugly girls pain. I thought it was a mistake to send this glittering singer's life into the sky and darken the rest. Everyone shined without Sonechka. It would be all around her. It would hurt every day to just walk down the street.
It is possible that I'm just an embittered ugly girl, expecting too much of this tiny novel. Maybe she was obsessed with Maria and the hollowness didn't have to speak of how lonely it must be to be born special to no one, truly loved by no one. What do you have to do to be good enough? Sonechka isn't owed. I think that and I'm still going to say that Berberova missed where it really hurt. It was too late before she ever met Maria. Whatever happened to her was never going to matter.
My New Directions copy seemed to me to want to rescue a lost classic. Translated into French and unknown in the English reading world for fifty years.

Il plaira difficilement aux lecteurs qui ne veulent pas ou qui ne peuvent pas rentrer dans le d茅cor culturel de cette communaut茅.
Le deuxi猫me probl猫me est que Sonetchka, l鈥檋茅ro茂ne de 芦 l鈥橝ccompagnatrice 禄 est une nulle n茅e qui ne r茅ussit jamais 脿 se hisser plus haut pendant son existence minable. Enfant naturelle, Sonetchka grandit sans p猫re avec une m猫re qui la regarde comme 茅tant la cause de ses malheurs. 脌 partir de l鈥櫭e de 18 huit ans Sonetchka quitte sa m猫re pour passer dans l鈥檕rbite d鈥檜ne grande chanteuse qui l鈥檈ngage comme accompagnatrice.
Pour les reste de ses jours, Sonetchka sera follement jalouse de sa patronne qui est beaucoup plus belle talentueuse qu鈥檈lle est. Ce qui est plus s茅rieux c鈥檈st que la patronne est aussi sup茅rieure moralement.

Berberova's little novel seems simple enough at the start, but there is a prickling emotional intensity that grows as the story progresses. I enjoyed the unexpected twists near the end and overall found this piece quite enjoyable. I'll be on the lookout for Berberova's other works.

La acompa帽ante es una novela muy cortita que transcurre entre San Petersburgo y Par铆s y que tiene como protagonista a S贸nechka, una joven pianista, hija de madre soltera. Una chica nada agraciada que encuentra trabajo como acompa帽ante de una popular soprano. Una mujer de una gran belleza y con una vida resuelta que se convertir谩 en su tutora.
Maria Nikol谩ievna es aquello que S贸nechka nunca podr谩 ser. Un motivo para admirarla, para desearla, primero y odiarla, despu茅s. Olvidad lo de odiar, no es la palabra que busco; desear su dolor o su desgracia creo que resultan mas adecuados en este caso. Y esta es la clave de la historia, la relaci贸n ambivalente que se establece entre ambas, c贸mo se establece y c贸mo se transforma cuando S贸nechka es consciente de que junto a ella siempre ser谩 la segunda y que, a pesar de sus esfuerzos y debido a sus or铆genes humildes, nunca tendr谩 derecho a vivir como ella lo hace.

He disfrutado mucho leyendo esta novela. Es una novela triste pero muy delicada, en la que aparentemente pasan pocas cosas y en la que, sin embargo, pasan muchas. Una novela publicada en 1935 por Nina Berb茅rova, que no obtuvo su reconocimiento hasta su vejez.

Exquisita novela corta de Nina Berb茅rova. Nacida en San Petersburgo en el a帽o 1901, se exili贸 tras la Revoluci贸n, viviendo en varias ciudades europeas, como Berl铆n y Par铆s, hasta que se afinc贸 definitivamente en Estados Unidos donde muri贸 en 1993. Resulta sorprendente, o quiz谩s no tanto, que no fuese hasta los a帽os 80 del siglo pasado, cuando se popularizaron sus escritos. Porque la Berb茅rova calidad tiene y no solo escribi贸 literatura sino tambi茅n poes铆a, ensayo, biograf铆a y art铆culos period铆sticos. Una maravilla para ir acabando el a帽o y el repaso ruso. Ya est谩 apuntada su autobiograf铆a "El subrayado es m铆o".

The Accompanist is a slim little novella that seems far, far more modern than its 1936 publication date. It's not a cheerful novel, and it's not a happy novel, but it's a well-crafted and subtle novel. It's hard for a non-Russian speaker to know how much of the modernity is in the original prose, and how much has been conveyed through the translation, but it's a crisp, largely direct style that grabs you and hangs on with the same sort of neurotic intensity the narrator herself displays. The Accompanist is largely concerned with ambition, and what happens when ambition collides not just with reality, but with the undermining forces of one's own mind. You could easily get annoyed with the narrator's self-pity, but it's her insecurities that make her character both realistic and ultimately somewhat sympathetic. Read it in an hour or so, and be impressed by Berberova's compact,brooding little story.

Certo 猫 che con poco pi霉 di 100 pagine, difficilmente si riesce ad entrare in sintonia con un personaggio. 脠 altrettanto vero per貌 che ho letto racconti ben pi霉 corti che mi hanno emozionato, quindi 猫 lo stile che non mi ha colpito?
A pensarci bene, non sono rimasta n茅 particolarmente colpita n茅 particolarmente delusa dallo stile utilizzato anche se, a mio parere, un po' freddo. E questa non 猫 una battuta sulla provenienza della scrittrice, ma un mero dato di fatto.
L'espediente narrativo utilizzati, ovvero il ritrovamento di un diario con le memorie della protagonista, non ha certo aiutato un quando, essendo vicende ricostruire, non potevano di certo essere riportate le emozioni come vissute in quel momento.
Tuttavia si parlava di gelosia, invidia, ammirazione che sfociava quasi in venerazione, tutti sentimenti passionali che il questo contesto hanno mostrato ben poca passione.
Ma non 猫 tutto qui, la protagonista, l'accompagnatrice, 猫 proprio uno di quei personaggi che non riesco a farmi piacere. Passiva, apatica all' esterno, viene trascinata dagli eventi divenendo una comparsa di quegli stessi episodi che avrebbero potuto benissimo vederla come protagonista.
Insomma una vita vissuta a met脿 e forse per questo per me un po' deludente.

August 1, 2018De machtsverhouding tussen de twee personages (begeleidster en zangeres) is confronterend en oneerlijk. Het is er een die ik niet vaak ben tegengekomen in de literatuur, terwijl het juist herkenbaar en levensecht is. De eerbied en de haat van de ongelukkige, ongetalenteerde begeleidster voor de schitterende zangeres, voor wie het geluk eenvoudig lijkt. En als lezer wil je eigenlijk ook niet dat haar geluk eenvoudig is, omdat jij aan de kant staat van de Begeleidster (misschien alleen omdat je haar memoires leest, misschien omdat dat eenvoudige geluk meer iets lijkt voor anderen).
Twee mooie citaten over deze moeizame wisselwerking:
"En God? Waar was Hij? Waarom had Hij ons niet allemaal gemaakt zoals Hij haar had gemaakt?"
"Een gelukkig mens leeft als het ware boven de anderen (en verdrukt hen natuurlijk enigszins). En er valt niets te vergeven, het is net zoiets als gezondheid, schoonheid."
Als dat laatste citaat klopt, echter, is het misschien beter de zoektocht naar geluk op te geven.

Berberova's beautiful tale depicts the life of a Russian accompanist, who only ever manages to be a handmaiden to others. Written as a tale relating the contents of a discovered diary - the only artefact that remains of the as a woman and artist - telling how she never escaped obscurity, illegitimate in birth, to lonely death in exile.
Not driven by the desire of the protagonist, the tale's momentum is found in both the opportunity of given by another's fame and the resentment it arouses. Yet it's actors are more interdependent than they realise in preserving balance and harmony. Or, is it that the tale and the accompanist only emerge in a state of discordance, that loose their mystery in resolution?
Berberova's lucidity in this set piece inspires pity, whilst also enchanting the reader.

If you are looking for fiction about music, this novella is the wrong pick. It barely refers to the musical universe or practice. It reads like some French psychological movie about an unremarkable woman in the shadow of a successful one- restrained and forgettable.
