Although Nothomb claims to have been born in Japan, she actually began living in Japan at the age of two until she was five years old. Subsequently, she lived in China, New York, Bangladesh, Burma, the United Kingdom (Coventry) and Laos.
She is from a distinguished Belgian political family; she is notably the grand-niece of Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb, a Belgian foreign minister (1980-1981). Her first novel, Hygi猫ne de l'assassin, was published in 1992. Since then, she has published approximately one novel per year with a.o. Les Catilinaires (1995), Stupeur Et Tremblements (1999) and M茅taphysique des tubes (2000).
She has been awarded numerous prizes, including the 1999 Grand Prix du roman de l'Acad茅mie fran莽aise; the Prix Ren茅-Fallet; and twice the Prix Alain-Fournier.
While in Japan, she attended a local school and learned Japanese. When she was five the family moved to China. "Quitter le Japon fut pour moi un arrachement" ("Leaving Japan was a wrenching separation for me") she writes in Fear and Trembling. Nothomb moved often, and did not live in Europe until she was 17, when she moved to Brussels. There, she reportedly felt as much a stranger as everywhere else. She studied philology at the Universit茅 Libre de Bruxelles. After some family tensions, she returned to Japan to work in a big Japanese company in Tokyo. Her experience of this time is told in Fear and Trembling. She has written a romanticized biography (Robert des noms propres) for the French female singer RoBERT in 2002 and during the period 2000-2002 she wrote the lyrics for nine tracks of the same artist. Many ideas inserted in her books come from the conversations she had with an Italian man, from late eighties and during the nineties. She used the French Minitel, while he used the Italian Videotel system, connected with the French one. They never met personally.

A wonderfully evocative semi-autobiographical(?) account by Nothomb. A true tour de force! She recounts as best as she can, her time in Peking (now Beijing), telling the story of how a seven-year old's desperate infatuation, with an angelic six year old, Elena, taught her so much about love, desire and need. Another superb book, by what is now my favourite Belgian author... hee hee. But seriously, this is a phenomenal creator. 9 out of 12, Four Star read.

Am茅lie Nothomb siempre me hace pasar un buen rato con sus historias y en 茅sta hace un retrato mordaz y retorcido de la infancia, pero tambi茅n realista, porque... 驴no es la infancia una de las 茅pocas en que la crueldad de los humanos es tan pura como su inocencia?
Esta dicotom铆a queda muy bien plasmada en la historia, aderezada adem谩s por esa iron铆a caracter铆stica de la autora que, adem谩s, aprovecha para ir lanzando cr铆ticas por ah铆... al sinsentido de las guerras, al r茅gimen chino, al racismo...
A destacar el eje de la novela, la relaci贸n entre la protagonista y Elena, tan 谩cida como disfrutable.

One of the things I admire most about Loving Sabotage was that the author has imagined children of such extraordinary meanness, and has allowed this reality about children to be expressed on the page. The book feels like a layered meditation, from an adult perspective, on the egoism of young children, as well as a lovely tribute to the despair of first love.

Con siniestra inocencia y tierna crueldad, Nothomb narra (fiel a ese estilo tan suyo que no cononce timidez ni modestia) sus experiencias infantiles en la China comunista de los a帽os 70, donde su padre oficiaba como diplom谩tico. Solo con el colosal poder de su belleza, Elena logr贸 cautivar a la otrora guerrera Amelie y desplazarla del lugar que la peque帽a guerrera consideraba propio y merecido: el centro del mundo, obviamente.
Un libro escrito con el 铆mpetu habitual de esta autora, colmado de an茅cdotas, siempre entretenido aunque se pierda un poquito en extravagantes disquisiciones que intentan amalgamar las inocentes impresiones de aquella Amelie chiquitita con la experimentada visi贸n de la escritora adulta.

Abgesehen davon, dass die Geschichte grandios ist, wei脽 ich nun endlich, wo die Autorin ihre subtile Grausamkeit und Boshaftigkeit herhat. Sie hat sich bereits im Alter von sieben Jahren meisterliche 脺bung in diesen Techniken angeeignet, n盲mlich in China.
Der Roman beginnt mit einem sensationellen Einstieg, Nothomb zieht mit ihren Eltern ganz pl枚tzlich von Japan nach China, das ist eine riesige Z盲sur f眉r die kleine Protagonistin. Gr枚脽tenteils auf sich alleine gestellt, spielen die Kinder des diplomatischen Personals aus vieler Herren L盲nder im Botschaftsghetto in Peking Weltkrieg. Die B眉ndnisse haben sie sich von den Eltern abgeschaut, es geht gegen die Deutschen aber nur gegen die Ostdeutschen Kommunisten. Die Amerikaner und die Russen leben 眉brigens in eigenen Botschaftsghettos und spielen in diesem strategischen Spiel keine Rolle. Es gibt Gefangene, Verh枚re, Aufkl盲rung Spione, Sabotage einige Foltertechniken wie Verdreschen, Urindusche, Urinknebel und Ankotzen. Die Kids sind sehr kreativ in der Entwicklung von neuen Methoden, den Erzfeind zu qu盲len und schwadronieren als Maulhelden sogar permanent 眉ber T枚ten und totale Vernichtung der Feinde. Auch die Ostdeutschen Kinder sind live dabei, denn allen ist langweilig ohne Aufsicht und eingesperrt in einem kleinen Territorium im tristen China. Irgendwie ist das sogar eine ordentliche Rebellion gegen ihre Eltern, denn diese l枚sen Probleme ja mit Diplomatie, entgegen den Kids, die immer auf h枚chster Eskalationsstufe agieren. Die Eltern mischen sich nur marginal ein, denn sie sind viel zu besch盲ftigt und au脽er ein paar blauen Flecken ist eh nicht viel passiert, lediglich bei den Feinden haben sie die Westdeutschen aus politischen Gr眉nden in die Verb眉ndeten hineinreklamiert.
So nebenbei bekommt man noch ein paar Informationen vom kommunistischen und postkommunistischen China aus der Sicht eines Kindes mit.
Schon das w盲re grandios genug, um einen sensationellen Roman abzugeben, aber Nothomb z眉ndet noch den Turbo. Herrlich! Hie kleine Protagonistin verliebt sich unsterblich und sehr ungl眉cklich in die narzisstisch veranlagte italienische Sch枚nheit Elena. Irgendwann lernt sie von Mutti die Strategie der Geringsch盲tzung, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Geliebten zu erlangen. Hier wird als nachtr盲gliche Analyse einer Erwachsenen noch eine Verbindung von Elena zur griechischen Helena von Troja angeh盲ngt. Zudem eskaliert der Kinderkrieg und die angewandte Gewalt derart, dass die Eltern ihren Kindern einen Waffenstillstand aufzwingen, was diese 鈥� inklusive der Ostdeutschen - total peinlich finden. Ein neuer Feind muss her. Das Finale der Liebe ist herzzerrei脽end und k枚stlich.
Fazit: Absolute Leseempfehlung!

I'm not very sure how this book made me feel. It's my second experience with Nothomb and I just find myself unable to describe her personality. It's like I'm standing in front of a huge labyrinth and someone is saying "Go get the cheese". But for God sake "I'M NOT SEEING THE CHEESE, I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE IT IS EVEN".
Nothomb's few pages are rich of ideas and sentiments, the way you feel that you just finished a 500 pages book. she doesn't explain too much, she doesn't repeat or rewrite any idea. It's just her way "take it or leave it".So if you are by any means searching for a peaceful reading, this book doesn't suit you.
Believe me you have to wear a long leg boot with a coat before entering this Nothombian world because you are about to face some huge storms. So get ready :D.
I can't say that I did understand all what this book is talking about sometimes the ideas were really hard enough to let me repeat the paragraph once and twice.
I may change my review after rereading this book again, or after being more involved in Nothomb books but till now I can say that I'm happy to have this book in my library.

March 7, 2025Ok. I thought this was very interesting, linguistically it was beyond my comfort zone, but not as much a the Balzac novella that I read last year.
It reminded me of , in that book, an adult - who may or may not be the author narrates an episode from her life when she was a teenager so there is a dynamic between the relatively limited perspective of the younger self as perceived by the older self. Here Nothomb claims to be writing something that is more akin to autobiography (though as readers we might regard thstvtoi as part of her myth making), but again we have the adult creatively entering the other perspective of a younger self ( possibly real, real-ish, or fictionalised).
The story begins when Nothomb is seven. From her perspective, she is the centre of the universe, something happens so that she learns that she is not the fixes centre around who everything else orbit. So the centre of the story is the development of consciousness and the ending, or beginning of the end of a child's outlook on the world. This makes this a Romantic text, it's central moment is the disillusionment of the self and the emergence of rationalism which fragments the original dreamlike unity of the world. Perhaps then we can see Nothomb's other novels and even her own life - in which she is doing a fair bit of mythologising - as part of a Romantic project of re-enchantment.
The back drop to all this is that she lives in a diplomatic compound in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution, not far from the Forbidden City. The parents of the various legations are busy working towards greater international understanding and co-operation while their children, left to their own devices are engaged in a fierce world war, in its final stage against Nepal - because it does not have a rectangular flag. This obviously is very unwise, Nepal is the country that the Gurkhas come from after all, so the war of the colition of the world versus Nepal can only end in one way in the end .
I have seen parallels drawn to , and I can see that, my edition also suggests the film "the last emperor", also reasonably enough. You could also think of - just what do children do when the parents are not watching? I also thought of Lea Ypi's , as Notlomb writes that she found freedom in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution while the Gang of Four were ruling - the world is quite different place for children. For the adult reader there is a perspective of irony that adds to the reading pleasure.
Just as an example of my linguistic difficulties here, this was more or less comprehensible on a word by word level, even understandable as sentances, but culturally it was just overwhelming!

This Belgian who writes in French, was born in Japan and partly raised in China, writes fantastical novellas usually about precocious children who encounter self-imposed or external hardships in the nasty old world. I read this one for respite during The Tunnel but the choppy sentences and frustratingly twee intellectual humour made me less eager to pick it up. Nothomb claims the story (about a precocious seven-year-old member of Mao鈥檚 army who falls in love with a steely Chinese Italian girl) is completely true, which seeing the character speaks at a level of erudition most adults fail to achieve without speedball cocktails, is a somewhat outrageous boast. The novel coasts along on its impish humour and unusual approach to history but lacks the flair for tongue-in-cheek melodrama in books like The Character of Rain (narrated by a three-year-old) and The Book of Proper Names. Also, the cover gives me a headache.

3,5/5. S茅ptimo libro que leo de la Nothomb y cada vez tengo m谩s claro dos cosas: amo absolutamente a esta mujer y no es para todos los p煤blicos.
El sabotaje amoroso nos va a contar los tres a帽os que Am茅lie vivi贸 en China durante la revoluci贸n cultural, ah铆 es nada xD. Nuavemente es un relato autobiogr谩fico, pero siempre con esas dosis de situaciones fantasiosas. As铆 que, realmente, nunca sabes hasta donde pas贸. Pero eso da igual, porque en sus libros autobiogr谩ficos Am茅lie siempre se convierte en personaje y eso es lo que la hace tan maravillosa. Me hubiera gustado leer este libro justo detr谩s de La metaf铆sica de los tubos, hubiera tenido m谩s sentido.
El caso es que en este libro Am茅lie nos va a mostrar su primer amor, Elena. Esta hermosa ni帽a italiana, jugara con Am茅lie durante toda la novela y le ense帽ar谩 los entresijos del amor (no correspondido).
Me ha gustado mucho, aunque quiz谩 no al mismo nivel de mis grandes favoritos, como pueden 脕cido sulf煤rico, Cosm茅tica del enemigo o el propio Metaf铆sica de los tubos. A煤n as铆, es Am茅lie Nothomb, y leer a esta mujer siempre es un placer, el tema es lo de menos.

En esta novela Am茅lie Nothomb nos relata su vida cuando ten铆a entre 5 y 7 a帽os, a los 5 a帽os, su familia se traslada a China desde Jap贸n, a causa del trabajo de su padre, ya que este es diplom谩tico, y van a vivir al gueto de los diplom谩ticos, en el barrio San Li Tun.

Am茅lie prueba todo lo que se le ocurre para llamar la atenci贸n de Elena y as铆 lograr su amor.
Me encanta la narrativa de Am茅lie Nothomb, con ese toque de iron铆a y de locura al que me tiene acostumbrada, reconozco que no es una autora que le guste a todo el mundo pero a mi me encanta y aunque esta novela me ha gustado, no es de las mejores que le he le铆do.

Cuanta crueldad, belleza, inocencia puede haber en los ni帽os y as铆, todo junto, hasta pareciera que la crueldad forma parte de la infancia. Esto me pareci贸 este libro.

A strange little book, recounting Nothomb's years, aged 5 to 8, living in a diplomatic compound in China in the 1970s. She assures us it's true in an afterword, but even allowing for the benefit of hindsight when adding facts and attributing thoughts to her younger self, some of the things she got up to seem implausible for one so young. She even says "I will never surpass my analytical achievements as a five-year-old", although that is partly in jest because she goes on to explain her early conclusion on leaving Japan and arriving in Peking that "a Communist country is one in which there are electric fans" rather than air conditioning.
It's written in a slightly breathless, and very self-centred way, which is apt, and yet it rarely rings quite true. "The universe exists so that I can exist", she lists various disparate things and adds "none of this was superficial since it all existed in relation to my existence". Yes, five-year-olds think the world revolves around them, but this extrapolation just sounds daft to me.
Nothomb cycles round Peking on her own(!) on a bike she believes to be a horse. She is involved in ruthless gang warfare in the compound and falls in love with an uninterested (and uninteresting) but beautiful girl. That's it. But the gang warfare is a major feature, and really quite shocking: shocking in terms of what it involved, and even more shocking that it continued so long without parents or teachers intervening. "No one on this earth is indispensable, except the enemy". Chilling. Then a lighthearted justification: "Out parents' job was to reduce international tension as much as possible. Whereas we did just the opposite. (Go have children yourself, and see where it gets you.)"
I read this straight after JG Ballard's memoirs (), including his time in a Shanghai internment camp, and there are some similarities. Like him, "It was in the prison-like ghetto of San Li Tun that I discovered freedom" and "Adults can give their children no finer gift than to forget about them".
There are a few good observations about China and the Chinese - and how others react. She acknowledges the pull China has on many people, "China is like a skillful courtesan who manages to make her innumerable physical imperfections disappear without even hiding them, and who infatuates all her lovers."
The schooling in the compound is surprisingly bad, with dull, pointless tasks assigned by unqualified teachers, but this does create a good analogy. "I have never set foot in a Ministry of Culture, but when I try to imagine one I am transported to that class in the City of Electric Fans, with its ten peelers of potatoes, ten painters improvising blobs on paper, nineteen intellectuals without any perceivable function, and a guru writing a noble collective story all by himself."
I was also amused that the Chinese government wouldn't tell foreign diplomats the names of ministers, so the diplomats were "reduced to addressing fictitious, unnamed ministers - an interesting exercise that required a strong capacity for abstraction and an admirable dose of speculative audacity. One thinks of Stendhal's prayer: 'Oh God, if you exist, have pity on my soul, if I have one.'"
Nothomb's first three years, in Japan, are described in The Character of Rain, which I didn't much like: .

Am茅lie Nothomb, siempre divertida, siempre original, con una prosa que es como un cuchillo afilado y que te hace reir - cuando quiere, que no es siempre.
A trav茅s de su 谩cida mirada de ni帽a precoz - entre los 5 y los 8 a帽os - compartimos su experiencia en la China comunista de 1972, viviendo en una especie de complejo aislado, junto con los hijos de otros diplom谩ticos extranjeros destinados en Pek铆n.
La obra se puede leer simplemente como anecdotario o como una reflexi贸n sobre la violencia, a la que el ser humano se inclina por instinto desde la infancia, una infancia l煤cida y cruel tal como ella la presenta. La paradoja es que son los hijos de los diplom谩ticos que en teor铆a se ocupan de asegurar la paz entre los pueblos.
Tomen ustedes una retah铆la de ni帽os de todas las nacionalidades: enci茅rrenlos juntos en un exiguo y hormigonado espacio. D茅jenlos libres y sin vigilancia. Los que piensen que esas criaturas se dar谩n la mano en se帽al de amistad son unos tremendos ingenuos.
Es importante la reivindicaci贸n de la infancia como un territorio de libertad y creatividad, el momento en que realmente disfrutamos y vivimos la vida con fruici贸n.
Siempre fui consciente de que la edad adulta no contaba: a partir de la pubertad la existencia s贸lo es un ep铆logo.

No os imagin谩is las ganas que ten铆a de volver a leer a Am茅lie, ella, mi escritora favorita por excelencia. Hac铆a m谩s de diez a帽os que no me animaba, m谩s de diez a帽os que no he tenido el placer de tenerla en mi vida. Graso error, definitivamente la se帽ora Nothomb tiene que estar presente en mis lecturas.
Decid铆 ponerme con sus libros autobiogr谩ficos (son seis en total, de los cu谩les s贸lo hab铆a le铆do tres) porque recordaba que me hab铆an apasionado de jovencita. As铆 que empiezo en orden de publicaci贸n con 芦Le sabotage amoureux - El sabotaje amoroso禄.
En este relato, la autora nos cuenta como fueron los tres a帽os que vivi贸 en Pek铆n con la edad de 6 a帽os. A trav茅s de una narraci贸n surrealista, con toques de humor y de situaciones fantasiosas (que nunca sabremos si existieron o no); nos hace part铆cipes de la historia de su primer amor.
Y es que este libro, a parte de hacernos formar parte de juegos de ni帽os (bastante crueles, por cierto) y de mil estrategias de guerra que crean entre ellos, nos acerca a la Am茅lie m谩s humana. Aquella que se enamora y busca las mil maneras para llamar la atenci贸n de esa ni帽a tan delicada y fascinante llamada Elena.
Es esa relaci贸n la que lleva las riendas de la trama, una relaci贸n tortuosa en la que Elena juega sin piedad con los sentimientos de Am茅lie. Nos brinda un retrato cruel y mordaz de la infancia, cuando se supone que todo debe de ser paz y tranquilidad d谩ndonos ese punto de vista m谩s realista.
Tan 谩cida c贸mo retorcida la pluma de esta escritora me sigue embaucando, la iron铆a y la cr铆tica social siempre presentes en sus novelas la hacen ser muy original y diferente al resto. No creo que sea para todo el mundo pero yo la amo, amo c贸mo se expresa y el lenguaje tan cuidado y sofisticado que utiliza en su idioma original (si pod茅is leedla en franc茅s porque pierde parte de su esencia con la traducci贸n).
Deseando seguir con esta maravillosa aventura en la que Nothomb te absorbe y te sumerge en sus recuerdos, a veces c铆nicos, surrealistas, extra帽os, tiernos pero siempre 煤nicos, como ella.

Dopo aver letto con interesse Stupore e tremori, dove la Nothomb descrive il mondo del lavoro giapponese, mi ha incuriosito questo libro strano ma molto interessante dove l'autrice parla di alcuni anni della sua infanzia in Cina, mentre seguiva il padre diplomatico.
"Sabotaggio d'amore" 猫 un libro strano perch茅 sembra banale e invece racconta molte cose. Sembra lieve e invece a tratti 猫 molto profondo. Sembra ironico, ma 猫 anche serio.
Di cosa parla? Della Cina, vista con gli occhi di Amelie bambina, principalmente dal ghetto riservato agli stranieri. Il ghetto 猫 un luogo perfetto per fantasticare, giocare e fingere una terza guerra mondiale con tutti quei 鈥渘emici鈥� di nazionalit脿 diversa, i Tedeschi dell鈥橢st, i Francesi, gli Inglesi, gli odiati, non si sa perch茅, Nepalesi. In ogni caso ben separati dalla popolazione locale con cui non ci poteva essere contatto a causa del regime politico.
Pechino, che "puzza di vomito di bambino", diventa la citt脿 dei ventilatori (interessante la metafora ventilatori = povert脿 = comunismo, in contrapposizione coi ricchi condizionatori disponibili ovunque in occidente), mentre la Cina 猫 descritta come il luogo pi霉 brutto al mondo, pieno di sporcizia, disperazione, povert脿, propaganda: 鈥渢utto quello che non era splendido era orribile鈥�. Ma anche terribilmente affascinante.
"La Cina 猫 come un'abile cortigiana capace di far dimenticare le innumerevoli imperfezioni del suo corpo senza neppure nasconderle e di far innamorare tutti i suoi amanti"
Il libro parla dei bambini, con le loro convinzioni, la loro fantasia, i loro giochi, le loro riflessioni che nella loro innocenza a volte diventano perfino profonde:
鈥淟'umanit脿 猫 divisa in tre categorie: donne, bambine e ridicoli. Le donne erano persone indispensabili. Preparavano da mangiare, vestivano i figli, insegnavano loro ad allacciarsi le scarpe pulivano, fabbricavano dei bambini con la pancia, indossavano vestiti interessanti. I ridicoli non servivano a niente. La mattina i ridicoli grandi andavano in ufficio, che era una scuola per adulti, cio猫 un posto inutile. In realt脿 i ridicoli adulti erano rimasti molto simili ai ridicoli bambini, con una differenza non trascurabile: loro avevano perso il bene dell'infanzia. Ma le loro funzioni non cambiavano granch茅, e il loro fisico nemmeno. In compenso c'era un'enorme differenza fra le donne e le bambine. Innanzitutto non erano dello stesso sesso, bastava guardarle per rendersene conto. E poi il loro ruolo cambiava moltissimo in base all'et脿: passavano dall'inutilit脿 dell'infanzia all'utilit脿 primordiale delle donne, mentre i ridicoli rimanevano inutili tutta la vita."
Ma il libro parla anche dell鈥檃more e delle sue dinamiche. Quell'amore non ricambiato di Amelie per Elena, una sua bellissima coetanea, che si diverte a umiliarla fino a farle subire quello che lei chiama un 鈥渟abotaggio鈥�, ossia una sorta di autodistruzione, cosa abbastanza tipica nel periodo dell鈥檃dolescenza.
"E io stavo ferma quanto lei, e tenevo gli occhi fissi nei suoi: era come se stessimo giocando a chi avrebbe battuto le palpebre per prima. Ma il vero braccio di ferro di quello sguardo si svolgeva molto pi霉 in profondit脿"
鈥淟a vera bellezza deve lasciare insoddisfatti: deve lasciare all'anima una parte del suo desiderio."
La Nothomb scrive per me molto bene. Sembra ingenua, mediocre, indifesa, a volte anche stupida. Invece non lo 猫 affatto, 猫 molto acuta, riflessiva, profonda, ironica, graffiante, elegante e dice cose meravigliose immergendole in storie lievi.
"Sabotaggio d'amore" 猫 un libro strano perch茅 sembra banale e invece racconta molte cose. Sembra lieve e invece a tratti 猫 molto profondo. Sembra ironico, ma 猫 anche serio.

I ridicoli non servivano a niente. La mattina i ridicoli grandi andavano in ufficio, che era una scuola per adulti, cio猫 un posto inutile. In realt脿 i ridicoli adulti erano rimasti molto simili ai ridicoli bambini, con una differenza non trascurabile: loro avevano perso il bene dell'infanzia. Ma le loro funzioni non cambiavano granch茅, e il loro fisico nemmeno. In compenso c'era un'enorme differenza fra le donne e le bambine. Innanzitutto non erano dello stesso sesso, bastava guardarle per rendersene conto. E poi il loro ruolo cambiava moltissimo in base all'et脿: passavano dall'inutilit脿 dell'infanzia all'utilit脿 primordiale delle donne, mentre i ridicoli rimanevano inutili tutta la vita."
Ma il libro parla anche dell鈥檃more e delle sue dinamiche. Quell'amore non ricambiato di Amelie per Elena, una sua bellissima coetanea, che si diverte a umiliarla fino a farle subire quello che lei chiama un 鈥渟abotaggio鈥�, ossia una sorta di autodistruzione, cosa abbastanza tipica nel periodo dell鈥檃dolescenza.
"E io stavo ferma quanto lei, e tenevo gli occhi fissi nei suoi: era come se stessimo giocando a chi avrebbe battuto le palpebre per prima. Ma il vero braccio di ferro di quello sguardo si svolgeva molto pi霉 in profondit脿"
鈥淟a vera bellezza deve lasciare insoddisfatti: deve lasciare all'anima una parte del suo desiderio."
La Nothomb scrive per me molto bene. Sembra ingenua, mediocre, indifesa, a volte anche stupida. Invece non lo 猫 affatto, 猫 molto acuta, riflessiva, profonda, ironica, graffiante, elegante e dice cose meravigliose immergendole in storie lievi.

Le sabotage amoureux raconte une vision de la Chine communiste entre 1972 et 1975 par une enfant d'environ 7 ans. Avec les autres enfants de son quartier, elle poursuit la seconde guerre mondiale 脿 sa mani猫re. Elle tombe amoureuse, et cherche 脿 se faire aimer en retour. C'est tr猫s bien 茅crit et j'ai vraiment ador茅 ce livre.
Quand je lis un Nothomb, j'ai l'impression de participer 脿 une loterie, soit le livre est merveilleux soit le livre ne m'inspire pas du tout. Je suis contente d'avoir gagn茅.

Ils d茅posaient devant les portes de chaque appartement une petite caisse de yaourts individuels, contenus dans des pots en verre et recouverts d'un insignifiant papier. A l'aube, un commando de soldats masculins se rendaient devant les portes des appartements est-allemands, soulevaient les couvercles, buvaient la pressure et la rempla莽aient par une dose 茅quivalente d'un liquide de m锚me couleur fourni par leur organisme. Puis ils remettaient les couvercles, ni vu ni connu, et allaient se faire pendre ailleurs.
Nous n'avons jamais su si nos victimes mangeaient leurs yaourts. Tout porte a le croire, d'autant qu'aucune plainte ne fut mentionn茅e. Ces laitages chinois 茅taient d'une acidit茅 telle que certains go没ts bizarres pouvaient tr猫s bien passer sans 锚tre remarqu茅s.
L'ignominie de cette man艙uvre nous faisait 茅ructer d'extase. Nous nous disions que nous 茅tions immondes. C鈥櫭﹖ait grandiose.

De primeras he de decir que este NO es mi libro favorito de la autora, pero eso no quita que sea un libro de Am茅lie Nothomb y que lo haya disfrutado, como acostumbro a hacer con sus libros. El sabotaje amoroso es una mezcla de pedanter铆a, amor infantil, deseo y verdad. Cabe destacar que es uno de sus primeros libros pero eso no impide que ese grado de verdad y realidad, que yo veo en sus novelas, est茅 ya ah铆 presente. A su vez, es ese aspecto una de las cosas que m谩s me gusta de Am茅lie Nothomb, que pese a lo histri贸nico de su prosa, siempre hay un grado de verdad que te hace cerrar el libro y estar de acuerdo con el final, decida lo que decida. Sus historias son reales en ESE sentido. Tienen vida m谩s all谩 y es algo que aplaudo y que continuar茅 buscando en sus libros.
Todo me parece grandioso, empezando por m铆 misma. En el interior de mi cabeza, las ideas juegan a la rayuela.

Amo a amelie nothomb! Nunca sabes si est谩s leyendo algo autobriografico o ficticio, su personaje es tan fuerte que siempre est谩 metida en una sola bolsa, pero siempre funciona. Me encanta el caracter de ese personaje, acida, brillante, con sentido del humor y coraje ante el mundo. Esta historia es de una ni帽a de 7 a帽os, pero no est谩 tratando de hablar desde esa edad, sino contando su experiencia con una vision que parece m谩s completa, con una mirada retrospectiva. La recomiendo mucho, hasta ahora no he leido nada suyo que no me haya gustado.

Qu茅 bonita es la inocencia. Ojal谩 quedarnos para siempre en esa etapa de la vida en la que en la que ir al cole es divertido y jugar con tus amigos puede convertirse en la Tercera Guerra Mundial. Y el primer amor, que gran descubrimiento, 驴verdad? Y no hablo solo de amar a una persona. Me refiero a enamorarnos por primera vez de cualquier cosa: el aroma de una flor, un libro, un juego, los paseos matutinos, etc. Es una sensaci贸n maravillosa cuando hacemos algo por primera vez y nos embriaga una sensaci贸n de paz y tranquilidad, aunque no siempre esa sensaci贸n perdura en el tiempo, 驴verdad?
De eso nos hablo Nothomb en este libro, de los primeros amores, de cuando somos ni帽os y empezamos a descubrir el mundo que nos rodea, a encantarnos y desencantarnos, a ser felices y a sufrir, a sentirnos incomprendidos y entusiasmados al mismo tiempo.
A trav茅s de su yo de 7 a帽os, la autora nos gu铆a por los entresijos de su infancia y sus experiencias vividas, nos transporta a la 茅poca en la que 茅ramos inocentes, en la que nos cre铆amos dioses y en la que empez谩bamos a descubrir que hab铆a vida m谩s all谩 de nosotros. Este libro es toda una oda al primer amor, al descubrimiento de nuevas emociones y sobre todo a la evoluci贸n de estas a trav茅s del tiempo y de como pueden convertirse en algo totalmente distinto a lo que nos supuso en un primer momento.
El libro cuenta tambi茅n con una fuerte cr铆tica al per铆odo de postguerra de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y sobre todo al comunismo, pero desde el punto de vista de una ni帽a, que le da ese toque de ingenuidad pero que a su vez transmite de manera sencilla, directa y precisa, la realidad social que est谩 viviendo en ese momento.
Un libro que me ha quitado ese sabor amargo que me dej贸 鈥淗igiene del asesino鈥� y que ha conseguido que vuelva a enamorarme de la prosa de Nothomb y de su manera tan peculiar de contar las cosas.

Un recorrido por una infancia embelesada desde los siete hacia los catorce a帽os, donde lo poco que se capta de la etapa de vida en China est谩 centrado en las peleas entre los ni帽os de las diferentes nacionalidades.
La voz de la protagonista describe con pasi贸n como se enfrentan a los enemigos del barrio y las sofisticadas t茅cnicas de tortura infantil, en una guerra a la que los adultos dan la espalda. Tambi茅n descubre el amor en la forma de Elena, una orgullosa y bella ni帽a italiana, y se pasa los d铆as buscando su atenci贸n y compasi贸n. Se trata de una difusa biograf铆a de un mundo que se presenta apasionante a pesar de levantar pocos palmos del suelo, y refleja la convicci贸n de lo equivocado del mundo de los adultos.

Primer libro del 2019, intentando seguir con el prop贸sito de leer todo lo publicado por Nothomb a la fecha. Tengo entendido que esta fue la primera pieza biogr谩fica de la autora, habla de su infancia en China y del juego de la guerra y del primer amor. La gran paradoja de Nothomb es que es brillante justo cuando el texto no se preocupa por ser brillante. Cuando fluye 鈥攜 en este texto fluye un par de veces鈥� consigue ser r铆o con toda la belleza que eso implica.

Every so often one opens up a box of what one assumes to be literature, when out comes traipsing nothing more than a jumped up edgelord, high as a kite on their own enfant terrible-ness and shored up the whims of fortune and the indulgences of habitus. I gave Nothomb her first chance back in 2019 with her most well known work, one of the only pieces by a woman in translation featured by the 1001 Books Before You Die, and found one of the worse cases of the peculiarly Occidental breed of global self-obsession. Despite this, I kept this work on out of some misguided fellow feeling of queerness, and when it showed up at a local library, the opportunity to take a chance on it became too great to ignore. Alas, I just can't take the easy mode when it comes to reading and reduce entire countries to metaphors while the WASP hegemony continues apace in the year 2024, no matter how many European philosophers are quoted or how frequently "transgressive" subjects, largely pertaining to prepubescent genitals, are paraded about. In any case, after eleven years, this book has finally been set free from my shelves, leaving me to gladly return this copy to its public institution and my mind to pastures far away from Nothomb. She certainly does something for more than a few readers, but when it comes to her style and her choices and her attitudes, I'm just too tired to care.

This amazing book is the self-told story of a seven-year-old girl's three years in China. Amelie (the narrator never says her name, but the author's note says that the story is all true and autobiographical, and none of the names have changed) is the child of Belgian diplomats. Born in Japan, she is convinced she is Japanese until her father is posted to China, where they live for three years in the 1970s. Diplomats' families in China are mainly housed in one ghetto, and the children are almost entirely left to their own devices, outside of going to school, eating meals, and sleeping. The story describes how these children play, creating their own "war," which mirrors adult life almost exactly, but with some slight substitutions. Amelie is consumed with the war and pictures herself as a self-sacrificing, brilliant hero, until the day Elena arrives. Elena is a beautiful, indifferent Italian girl with whom Amelie is immediately transfixed. Amelie makes it her life's work to break Elena's indifference and, therefore, earn her love.
This is a brilliant, engrossing little book that portrays the self-centered, omniscient bliss of childhood in the setting of Communist China. China is not so much a driving force or a character in itself as a spectre in the background, tainting all of the narrator's experiences ever so slightly. Descriptions are passionate and vibrant, and the narrator embodies childhood perfectly: idealistic but without pretense or illusion, and comfortable in the belief that their little world is all that matters.
I was fascinated by this book, and loved everything from the narrator's humorous descriptions of her exploits to the unrestrained emotion and nostalgia the author so deftly maintains throughout.

Primer libro que leo de Amelie Nothomb y me ha dejado a la expectativa, la picard铆a con que la narradora cuenta las peripecias 'b茅licas' me parecieron de lo m谩s divertido, el humor madurado a cuenta de su concepci贸n de comunismo y racismo, los sue帽os m谩s profundos de un ni帽o siempre son finalmente temas a los que volver.
