Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.
Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.
Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.
Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).
Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.
In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book.
All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as ŷ and Amazon.
It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.
Loved this book and the illustration made it even better. I giggled reading it to my 6 year old. She gave it way more than 5 stars. Can't wait to see what adventure they go on next.
This is my first time reading a book by Anh Do and I'm pleased to report that the audiobook adaptation was a lot of fun. It is a short, humourous listen about a sausage dog called Hot Dog, a cat by the name of Kevin and a jokey chameleon called Lizzie. Together, they have to help a lost baby bird reunite with its Mum with lots of scrapes along the way. The sound effects did feel a little annoying at times, however, I'm not the target audience for this series. Kids will love Hot Dog!
Fabulous book to read with your young children. Great humour that made us belly laugh. Fun illustrations and simple language for learning readers. Can’t wait for the next Hot Dog adventure.
Graphic Novel Plenty of humor for mid-elementary level readers. The wiener dog, Hot Dog, and his pals Kevin the cat and Lizzie the lizard enjoy adventures and fun together.
Silly early chapter book. Lots of pictures per page and not too complicated words. I read it aloud to my 5-year old in a night. Definite “Are You My Mother vibes to the storyline.
Hotdog is the first in a series of adventures and escapades about a fun-loving sausage dog.
Hotdog has his struggles in life…tying his shoelaces, playing guitar and competing in races. But the one thing he can do better than most is sniff out a solution to a problem and a problem is exactly what he and his friends Lizzie the lizard and Kevin the cat have. Their exciting day of kite-flying has been interrupted by little Birdy who has fallen out of his nest and is in desperate need of finding his mother. Ever the helpful canine, Hotdog determines that they should help little Birdy. But baby-sitting a bird and trying to reunite him with his mother is much harder than any of them imagined
A dog with a blocked nose, a chameleon that is afraid of heights, an over-weight, lazy cat that is dressed up as a cow and a Birdy without a nest make for the perfect combination in this hilarious story. Ideally suited for newly independent readers with its simple language and phrasing and plethora of illustrations that are filled with humour and fun and are presented in black and white with flashes of neon green - awesome!
There is never a dull moment as Hotdog, Lizzie and Kevin venture through the fields, across the river, to the farm and then the beach as they try to reunite Birdy with his mother. With plenty of funny conversations between the friends and lots of amusing encounters with birds who are not the mother including a karate-chopping, tattooed rooster and a selfie-taking penguin, readers will do well not to be laughing-out-loud the entire time they are reading. In amongst the adventure and humour there are messages about friendship and persistence as the loveable Hotdog reminds readers to keep trying no matter what.
This is the kind of read that could grab the attention of a reluctant reader and spark a love of books. It certainly grabbed my attention and I will most definitely be searching out more adventures with Hotdog and his mates.
Confession: I was looking for a quick audio book to fill my time until new-release-day tomorrow, and I found this on Hoopla.
I don't usually listen to audiobooks for the youngest age group(s), but this sounded like one I might enjoy (and the author's Vietnamese name drew my attention).
I suppose the best way to put it would be something like this:
If you're the type of person who can't stand songs like "Baby Shark," this might not be your cup of tea. The characters can be . . . excitable.
That being said, it's a short listen and a simple, cute story about a wiener dog and his friends trying to help a baby bird that fell out of a tree find its mother.
Hot dog can’t do a lot but one thing he is better than everyone else is sniffing. One day he wakes up and he can’t smell a thing. A baby bird is blown out of its nest and Hot Dog and his friends help the bird find its way back to its mother. When all their attempts fail Hot Dog dogs deep and finds a way to solve the problem.
Great early chapter book. Great font and some words are in green to help the reader track their place. A lot of fun illustrations. Perfect for more reluctant readers or readers who love graphic novels
My kids (3 and 6) LOVED this book and read it in one sitting, multiple times. It has tons of pictures, is silly (the cat has a grabbing tool to reach his grabbing tool!), and my incoming first grader could read about half of the words. This particular book is about a dog, cat, and lizard, as they attempt to find a baby bird's mother. It's kind of a elementary humor version of
Hot Dog is an amazing series for young readers. The series is simple to follow and easy to read. The stories are about a never-giving-up sausage dog who loves to go on adventures with his friends.
In Hot Dog #1, Hot Dog and his friends - Kevin the cat and Lizzie the lizard go on a stupendous adventure to get a baby bird back to its mother.
It is a super funny story and I couldn't stop reading till the end!!
I had my doubts about this book. It came up on an Amazon recommended list when searching for early chapter books and graphic novels for my 6.5 y.o. son. It just looks so weird... and honestly, sorry, but I thought it'd be a dud. I. Was. Wrong. Woods is fascinated with this little world and he tries to read them by himself before we settle in at night to read them. I can't wait to order more from the library. Highly recommend if your kiddo has a weird high sense of silliness!
A different Ayn Do series about a dog (Hot Dog) and his amusing adventures. It doesn't quite grab you in the same way that the Weir Do series does, it is still amusing, but feels more forced and not as natural as Weir Do - still entertaining but not the series to look for the next one with the same level of anticipation.
Hot dog! Introduces the three main characters in the series- Hot Dog the dachshund, Lizzie the chameleon and Kevin the cat and establishes their quirky yet charming personalities. In this book the three friends set out on an ‘Are you my mother type adventure attempting to help a baby bird find its mother. The illustrations and text meld perfectly to enhance the humour.
Very silly adventure story about three friends, a dog, a chameleon, and a cat (dressed as a cow), who work together to help return a baby bird to his mom.
Longer book, but more pictures than words. Cartoony illustrations, silly humor, poop jokes, etc.
Only think I didn’t like was that the female friend had to carry the baby and change his diaper.
My 8 yr old son decided to pick this as our next bedtime reading series (we read it together and he endless re-reads the books). Travelling around the UK on holiday we read the electronic version. It's fun, slight and pretty simple but he was giggling a lot and is keen to read more so that's a win.
Kind of an absurd chapter book version of “Are You My Mother? In that sense it didn’t feel very original, but it still might be a good choice for readers new to chapter books. One little complaint there were some scenes in the book where the little bird was talking but he wasn’t illustrated on the page spread. That might be confusing to some readers.
So think "Are you my mother" but then in junior chapter book from with a dog, a cat, and a chameleon helping baby bird find his mother. Cute and great for the first chapter book crowd, reluctant readers or ELL students.
Great start to this series. 3 diverse characters introduced, a dog, cat and lizard. The themes of friendship and to never give up. Kids, especially the emerging readers, love these as it feels like a ‘real chapter book but lots of pictures so at an accessible level.
Cute book; bold, green coloring on the otherwise black & white pages, and I did chuckle a few times. Feels familiar, like Stick Dog & Bad Guys - esque. Fun for 2nd-3rd grade readers in particular. =)
What a fun and quick read this was, perfect for a 2nd grader+. Even though I'm not the intended audience, I found myself laughing out loud and wondering what was going to happen next! This reminded me of The Bad Guys series by Aaron Blabey.
