About the author

Andrei Platonov

270books442followers
Andrei Platonov, August 28, 1899 鈥 January 5, 1951, was the pen name of Andrei Platonovich Klimentov, a Soviet author whose works anticipate existentialism. Although Platonov was a Communist, his works were banned in his own lifetime for their skeptical attitude toward collectivization and other Stalinist policies.

From 1918 through 1921, his most intensive period as a writer, he published dozens of poems (an anthology appeared in 1922), several stories, and hundreds of articles and essays, adopting in 1920 the Platonov pen-name by which he is best-known. With remarkably high energy and intellectual precocity he wrote confidently across a wide range of topics including literature, art, cultural life, science, philosophy, religion, education, politics, the civil war, foreign relations, economics, technology, famine, and land reclamation, amongst others.

His famous works include the novels The Foundation Pit and Chevengur.

The hero of Soul is a young builder of the brave new world鈥
Into the courtyard of the Moscow Institute of Economics walked a young man who was not a Russian, Nazar Chagataev. He looked around in surprise and came back to himself from the long time that had passed. He had crossed this yard again and again over the years; it was in these buildings that his youth had gone by, but he felt no regret. He had climbed up high now, onto the mountain of his mind, and from there he had a clearer view of the whole of this summer world, now warmed by an evening sun that had had its day.

Nothing lasts鈥 Everything is precarious and temporal鈥 This same evening he encounters a woman and decides to marry her鈥
He asked her to dance; he did not know how to dance himself, but she danced very well and led him in time with the music. Her eyes dried quickly, her face grew prettier, and her body, accustomed to shy fearfulness, now pressed trustingly against him, filled with a late innocence that smelled warm and good, like bread. Beside her, Chagataev stopped remembering himself. This temporary stranger, this woman he would probably never meet again, gave off a sense of sleep and happiness; thus it is that bliss often lives unnoticed beside us.

Everything is ephemeral and fly-by-night鈥 As soon as he proposes marriage, she tells him she is already pregnant鈥 As soon as they get married, he is sent to his native land to establish there a new happy life鈥
But he finds his kinsfolk even more miserable than they were before he left鈥 They are famished and ill鈥 They are dying from hardships and diseases鈥
Chagataev saw reed huts and a few yurts, also woven from reeds. There were about twenty dwellings in all, perhaps a few more. Not a dog, donkey or camel was to be seen in the settlement; nor were there even any chickens or ducks ranging about in the grass.
Beside the last hut sat a naked man. Folds of skin hung down on him like worn-out exhausted clothing, and on his knees lay a pile of reed stems; he was sorting through them, preparing to make an ornament or something that would be useful about the home. He showed no surprise at Chagataev鈥檚 arrival and did not even answer his greeting; instead he went on muttering to himself, imagining things no one else could see, keeping his soul occupied with some secret consolation of his own.

Those who want to change the world are many but the world has no wish to be changed.

Man, what a nice discovery! I had never heard of Platonov, but you can safely count him among the greats of Russian literature of the 20th century, along with his patron Vasily Grossman. In the biographical introduction to this collection I read that Andrei Platonov (1899-1951) had a very ambiguous attitude to modernism of which the Soviet regime was a part and prominent expression: he was an enthusiastic supporter of and participant in the Russian Revolution, but had reservations about ruthless violence (in the broad sense of the word) with which an attempt was made to create a new world. This is strikingly expressed in the novel Soul, from 1935, which makes up half of this collection. In it Platonov describes how the main character Nazar Chagataev tries to save his people (Platonov himself uses the word nation); it concerns the Dzhan (literally 'soul'/'vital spark'), of which there are only a few dozen left that survive in very miserable conditions in a delta area in the Central Asian region of Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan. Actually, Chagataev is on official mission to win the Dzhan for communism. But he soon realizes how problematic this is: his fellow citizens are barely able to survive in their great misery (they live by eating grass and sleeping all the time), on the contrary, they even think that life simply has no meaning for them. This hopelessness makes Chatagataev constantly think about concepts such as happiness, drive for life, despair and longing. Against his better judgement, he tries to take them back to their homeland, a harsh journey through desert areas. Platonov describes all this in breathtaking, hallucinatory scenes in which the group (more like a collection of sleep walkers) moves back and forth. In between there are some references to father Stalin, who lovingly cares for his subjects. In hindsight this is of course easy to interpret in a cynical manner, although I suspect that it is an authentic expression of Platonov's own struggle with the utopian character of Soviet ideology, in confrontation with the harsh reality of life. This must not have escaped the attention of the Soviet censor, that deleted entire passages (the full text was not published until 1999), and Platonov fell completely into discredit as a writer at the end of the 1930s.
As a story, 'Soul' is a bit shaky, but it is a strong piece of literature in which the essence of life is questioned. That Platonov was also a gifted short story writer is also evident from the novellette 'Return', which wittily depicts the return of a Soviet soldier from the Second World War and the challenge of regaining control of changed life. Rating 3.5 stars.

What a fantastic and totally unique writer Platonov is! The majority of his works were not published during his lifetime. He was totally forgotten in Russia until the late 80s of the last century. And I am so happy that he was rediscovered since then. I am reading . So I will leave some of my thoughts until I finish that book. Here, I just briefly comment on the two stories in this collection.

(Dzjan) is translated here like "Soul". It is almost biblical story of a young man returning to his people, a small group called Jan travelling somewhere in the steppes of Central Asia. The man has left them as a child and now he is coming back eager to improve their life. The story is a journey of the people and him (he is not necessarily leading, in fact, he often follows them) through the steppes and desert in order to survive and to re-learn what means to be human after an eternity of incredible deprivation. It is written in a dreamy, almost hallucinatory way. It is strikingly beautiful and shockingly realistic at the same time. It reminded me a modern novel , but with the more hopeful message overall. It took me a while to realise another association it has awoken. This novella foreshadows some aspects of and respectively, all what follows. I am sure Juan Rulfo never heard of Andrei Platonov. His story is written almost 30 years after the Platonov's and takes place on another continent. But there is this very powerful connection through the people who are not alive in the proper sense of the word. In Rulfo's case, they are alive after their death; in Platonov's case they are dead while still being alive.

And the "Return", a devastating and poignant short story, the reality of coming back from war and realising that nothing will be the same as it was.

"Soul" was one of the most interesting and strange allegories about the Stalinist era I have encountered. Desolate and desperate, but hopeful nonetheless, full of imagery vaguely reminiscent of Goya's more disturbing paintings. "The Return" was as gorgeous a story as I have read from twentieth century Russia. The other stories are also worth your time but these two are certainly the anchors of this collection.

Nego, D啪an, te拧ka knjiga.

U romanu imamo i reprizu mita o Prometeju. Nekoliko ptica on ubija i onda ih odmah razrezuju i dele krv i komadi膰e 啪ilavog mesa ostalima.

Sovyetler Birli臒inin ilk d枚neminde Orta Asya鈥檇a ya艧ayan bir halk谋 kurtarmakla g枚revlendirilen Cagatayev鈥檌n sert do臒a ko艧ullar谋 ve maddi yetersizlikler nedeniyle adeta bir imkans谋z g枚rev olan bu m眉cadelesi, insan谋n t眉m s谋namalara ra臒men hayata ba臒lanmas谋 bak谋m谋ndan esin verici bir nitelikte. I have read thousands of books mostly Russian. Platonov is in the top 5. Anyone who says he is " pro Soviet/ Stalin" must be shot, they are too idiotic to understand dark sarcasm. Irony. A man who had his 15 yr old son die from TB(and he in turn would contract it from his son, dying from it later) he contracted in a gulag did not love Stalin. A man who could not publish his work while Stalin was alive did not love Stalin. Are readers even educated anymore? Are they so uneducated from their hald educated Tea Party duraki that they cannot notice irony, sarcasm, very dark humor when they come across it? Yes, apparently so.
The stories in this small collection are written by a man who saw his generation not self destruct by be destroyed by the ideals he once had, by a system he once supported. Once. Many authors were shot or worked to death in gulags.Platonov himself died in a closet. Yet, for all this his stories have a purity unmatched in any other writer I have read, in any language. There is something alien and jarring. My favorite story is River Potudan. The story of a man returning from WW2 is not unusual in Russia, millions did. They came back to villages that were empty of men. The small towns often had women running the show. A young man returns to look for his love, a girl who once played piano and lived perhaps slightly better than others, they had a composure , a gentility that made them stick out from others. He comes back to find them thin and wrecked, the war has destroyed them, poverty has pummeled them. How Platonov describes the young man, the village, the mindsets, nature can only be called strange, very strange. I see how some would throw it away. Russians tell me Platonov really is the hardest author to translate. Even in Russian he startles with his style. His is the prose of an angel who has come to the world in its whirlwind of violence and sadnesses we cannot comprehend. He keeps his composure, but barely. One gets the sense that his lower lip is trembling. At the same time, he describes commonplace emotions and scenes as if they had never been described before. Language was invented by him, he seems to be telling us. The world has never been described ...until now.The stories are sad, beautiful, dark. A pearl necklace with blood on it in the hand of a poor child. Or, something like that.

This is one of my favorite novellas of all time. It鈥檚 unbearably sad and unbearably beautiful. Chandler鈥檚 translation reveals Platonov to be one of the great stylists of the twentieth century. Platonov assigns emotions to varied animals to signal or reflect the tragic emotions of his doomed characters.

Reading the Russian Masters really makes you rethink the merits of all the pampered MFA candidates puking out lit-fiction lately in the States. Platonov's life is as fascinating as any of his stories - he struggled to publish, he was usually desperately broke and in need of medicines for various family members. His son was sent to the Gulag at age 15 and dead not long thereafter. Platonov himself was dead at 52, of the same TB that had killed his son But it is the stories that count the most - this book is worth it just for "The Return" which is as masterful as anything ever written.

Everything included here is from 1935 onward, which means the earlier stories need to be read elsewhere. But these are 8 great stories, and the foreward and notes help to put everything in context. Essential reading even if you know nothing about Stalinist Soviet era life. Because Platonov's writing is universal. Afterall, who doesn't think about throwing themselves into the river as soon as spring thaw arrives?
