Jonathan London is the author of several celebrated children's books. His commitment to honoring the wonders of the natural world has been lauded by readers and critics alike. He is the author of more than 70 children's books, many of which are about nature. He's also the author of the popular Froggy series. He lives in Graton, California with his wife and two sons.
It’s the end of summer and friends Duck and Hippo decide to have one last picnic at their favorite pond, and of course, they invite their other friends, Elephant, Pig and Turtle. Everyone has brought something to contribute to the picnic, so the friends decide it’s time to have some fun dancing and singing. But when they to stop to have something to eat, Hippo realizes he forgot to bring anything.
What to do? Hippo decides to go find the last of the summer berries in the forest to share with his friends. But after he has been gone for a very long time, his friends get worried and decide to go and look for him. Duck really gets worried when the sun begins to go down. Is Hippo really lost, could he have fallen into a hole, as Duck fears, or could he still just be looking for berries?
This is a wonderful story about friendship and loyalty, sharing and caring. And even as the sun goes down and the moon rises, there is not cause for young readers to feel anxious. The friends are not really portrayed as being young, and they are smart enough to stick together as they look for and call out to Hippo. And once Hippo realizes he is lost, he is quick to call out for help. All's well that ends well, and the happy ending will certainly please young readers as the friends are reunited and finally finish having their end of summer picnic.
Storyteller Jonathan London and illustrator Andrew Joyner have once again collaborated to bring young readers this second installment in the Duck and Hippo series, and Duck and Hippo Lost and Found is every bit a wonderful as their first book Duck and Hippo in the Rainstorm. London's simple but well paced text and Joyner’s colorful cartoon-like drawings compliment each other so well and make for a fun, energetic story.
I am thrilled to introduce you to another adventure with Duck and Hippo. The first book, DUCK AND HIPPO IN THE RAINSTORM was a delightful story of an unlikely friendship and I've been anxiously waiting for the new adventure to arrive.
Hippo and Duck are the best of friends even though they may not be the most likely pair. They want to celebrate the end of summer and decide to have a picnic with all of their friends. Everyone arrives at the pond with their favorite goodies and just when they are about to eat, Hippo realizes he forgot to bring food to share. Not willing to partake without contributing, he sets off to find some berries in the woods. Unfortunately, as the title suggests, Hippo gets lost...or does he? It's another silly adventure with Duck, Hippo, and their friends that your child will get a kick out of reading.
I adore the colors, the expressions, and the large letters to help children identify the words to read on the pages. Elephant's surprised face or Hippo's joyful "Hello" is sure to engage the kids and get them excited to read the story along with their parents. I also appreciated how all of Hippo's friends wanted to wait to eat until he got back and then still put off their eating to go and find Hippo. The party wasn't going to happen without Hippo and teaches children about enduring friendships as well as manners.
I think these characters could get into lots of silly adventures and keep your children interested for years to come!
VERY cute story about friends celebrating the last days of summer by having a picnic! Each brings something to share except Hippo so Hippo sets off into the forest to find some berries to share with the group. Vibrant and fun illustrations provide plenty of visual exploration on every page each animal’s personality shines! Between their expressiveness and the fact that they decide to wait on their dear friend Hippo to return before eating their picnic you can’t help but fall in love with them! I personally love when children’s books print words in different fonts and sizes it adds inflection to the voice of each character, AND adds more visual stimulation. Really LOVE this book!
Jonathan London has written another delightful story about friendship. As Duck and Hippo and their friends, Elephant, Pig, and Turtle prepare to celebrate the end of summer, Hippo leaves to find something to contribute to the picnic. When Hippo doesn't come back, his friends go looking for him. As it gets darker, Hippo's friends get scared that they won't be able to find him. The illustrations are expressive and adorable. There is also a line that is repeated throughout the story that makes for a fun opportunity for children to respond as the story is read. London and Joyner have created a great follow-up to the original Duck and Hippo in a Rainstorm that shines as a read a loud.
What a cool story to show kids it's quite okay to be friendly to all
no matter if others look different than you or CD and do different things than you do. Also had some big imsges with easy to read font for those with tired eyes or poorer eyes than some others And with some adventurous surprises in store for those little OK mes ages 3-7 and or those in grades P-2. These are my reasons for rating this as a five star rating. And if you please, I would D like to recommend,,end this book for the kids ages and or grade levels I had already mentioned please? Thx! I received this ebookfor free using KU and in return here's my honest review. Super Work Jonathan! By Sunny
It was a cute book to read aloud with my kiddo. There were parts in the book where "everyone" said something, and he joined me in that. I'd say it's a good book to share with your kindergarten or younger kids. My 7 year old just enjoyed reading it together, but he's a far more advanced reader than what this book calls for.
I received a copy of this book for free by winning a goodreads giveaway.
Enjoyed reading this to my almost 4-year-old granddaughter. She enjoyed the illustrations and she was curious to find out what happened to the hippo. An adult reading the book can have fun with it and keep a child entertained by varying the voices. My granddaughter was able to figure out the emotions of all the animals due to the excellent illustrations. Highly recommend this book for the preschooler crowd and older.
Duck and Hippo and their friends celebrate the end of summer with a picnic. Everyone one brought something to share, except Hippo. He forgot, so he went in search of the last summer berries to share with his friends. He was gone so long, his friends began to worry and went to find Hippo. After dark, they finally find him and the berries. Finally, they enjoy their end of the summer picnic.
Duck and Hippo are back. And this time they are joined by their friends Elephant, Turtle, and Pig for a picnic beside their favorite pond. When Hippo realizes he's the only one who hasn't brought picnic food to share, he sets off into the woods to find some berries. He is gone a long time and his friends, thinking he may be lost, set off in search of him. Cute friendship story.
This book didn’t charm me as much as the first. Everything felt less playful and more labored to me. It seemed slightly less brilliant. However, the illustrations were excellent. There was a nice use of color, shadow, and line. The fonts were playful. It was still a very good book, and children will love it. I know my daughter enjoyed it. She’ll probably bug me to buy it, too.
i see there are 3 other reads from this series, i plan on reading those soon, these illustrations are amazing. trying to recall the books (tv show) i watch/read as a kid??! the Elephant ... i think he was??! i gotta do a google search??! drawing a blank???! i think this series would be awesome for your kids book shelf ... so fun!
Another great Duck and Hippo book. In this one, Duck ends up looking for Hippo (with the help of friends Pig, Turtle, and Elephant) when Hippo is gone too long from a picnic. An addition to this one: repetition of calling for Hippo, so the kiddo(s) can join in too! I love how the author manages to make this one not scary in tone, even as it starts to get dark.
I won this book on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. I entered for my granddaughters. I read this book first and found it to be a cute delightful book for children. We will look for other Duck and Hippo books. It is a nice hardback cover book and a wonderful addition to our children's books.
I won this book in a giveaway and am very pleased I did, I won August 15 and received it today August 28th, so the shipping was very fast. My son was so excited, we sat down and read it. The story was very cute and the illustrations were beautiful. Very pleased. Thank you :-)
I won this book on Good Reads. I read this book to my 6 year old niece who enjoyed it. the plot was easy to understand and kept our attention. the illustrations were a delight. the combination of a duck & hippo were a wonderful match great job
Duck and Hippo are going on a picnic with friends. Hippo has forgotten to bring something and he really wants to contribute. So he leaves the party to find berries.
I like this series because it is easy to follow. The story is simple and the illustrations are bold.
All the animals gather for a picnic, but hippo forgot to bring anything. He goes to look for berries, his friends think he is lost. They go searching for them. When they finally find him, he has found berries, one for each of them. They return to enjoy the picnic together.
This is one of my and my granddaughters favorite books. We love Duck and Hippo and friends. This particular book was our first one and we liked it so much we bought all the others. We read them almost every night.
Duck and Hippo have invited their friends to a picnic. But then Hippo realizes he has forgotten to bring something to share and leaves in search of berries. He is gone a long time so his friends worry he is lost. They go off to find him.
Duck and Hippo invite their friends, Elephant, Pig and Turtle to join them in the last picnic of Summer. Hippo realizes he didn't bring anything to contribute, so he goes off in search of the last berries of Summer.
I get where it was going but still if I had been there I would have been more than irritated with Hippo - and I didn't like the message that much either that you must reciprocate - let people accept generosity and let grace reign. Pretty disappointing.
When hippo forgets to bring something for the picnic, he just has to contribute. Berries is what he is looking for, however he ends up getting lost and his friends must search for him.
