The Mystery of the Walking Dead, originally known as Gosainpur Sargaram, is a detective story written by Satyajit Ray starring his famous characters Feluda and Topshe. It was first published in Sandesh in 1976.
Feluda is called to Gosaipur by Jiban Mallick, the son of the local Zamindar Shyamlal Mallick to investigate a threat of his father’s life.
Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজি� রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.
Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.
Early Life and Background: Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.
Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.
Literary Works: Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).
Awards, Honors and Recognitions: Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

ফেলুদা সমগ্� কেনা� পিছন� মূ� কারণ ছিলো শৈশবের একটা মজাদার সময় কে নিজে� সংগ্রহ� রাখা , আর মাঝে মাঝে একটু ঝালিয়� নেওয়া � আর গল্প হিসেবে তো ফেলুদা কে কখনো �/� এর কম দিতে� পারব� না �
জীবনলা� মল্লিকের বাড়িট� ছিলো ঠি� আমার কল্পনায় ভাবা একটা বাড়ির মতো। পল্লীগ্রামে বিশা� এক পুরোনো অট্টালিক�, পাঁচিল ভেঙেচুরে গেছে, বাড়ির পাশে� বড� এক পুকু�, আর আরেকপাশে বাগান। ইলেকট্রিসিটি নে�, আধুনিকতা� কোনো নিদর্শনই নেই। হারিকেনে� টিমটিম� আলোয� যা দেখা যায়! ছোট্� গল্প....একবসায� পড়ে ফেললাম 😄
Feluda is called to a small village by the name Gosaipur by Jivanlal, son of an old Zamindar, as he feels somebody is threatening to kill his father. There is also a man by the name Mr. Bhattacharya in the village who claims to have an ability to talk to the spirits of the dead. Some days later, a burglary takes place at Jivanlal's house and he is killed and his dead body is lost. Feluda decides to take Mr. Bhattacharya's help in communicating with the spirit of Jivanlal to solve the mystery. Which mystery is it, burglary, murder or something else??
সাড়� চার। মন� হচ্ছ� ফেলুদা� গল্পগুলো� মধ্য� শহরে� বাইর� ঘটিত গল্পগুলো আমার বেশি ভা� লাগছে। এই গল্পটা একদম শুরু থেকে� অনেক আশাপ্র� ছি� এব� শেষও হয়েছে দারুণভাবে। কয়েকট� ব্যাপা� আন্দাজ করতে পারছিলাম কিন্তু তাতে অবশ্যই গল্পের মহিম� কম� যায়নি�
Jiban Mallik called Feluda to Gosaipur to investigate an incident. One night, a stone wrapped in cloth was thrown into his father's room. This kind of cloth had been used by thugs in the past to kill people, so Mr. Mallik became concerned that his father's life might be in danger.Feluda met Mriganka Bhattacharya, who apparently could speak with the dead. Feluda learned about him from Mr. Mallik's father, Shyamlal Mallik, who had used Mr. Bhattacharya's services to communicate with his ancestor, Durlabh Mallik, in an attempt to identify the culprit.After meeting Mr. Bhattacharya and his nephew, Feluda grew suspicious of their cunning nature. One night, everything in Shyamlal Mallik's safe was stolen. The next morning, Jiban Mallik was found dead, but mysteriously, when the police arrived, the body was nowhere to be found.That evening, Feluda set up an appointment with Mr. Bhattacharya to uncover the truth about Mr. Mallik's killer, who stole from the safe, and what was stolen by speaking with Mr. Mallik's soul. Mr. Bhattacharya claimed that Jiban Mallik had been killed by his father because he tried to steal from the safe.From this, Feluda revealed that Mr. Bhattacharya was a fraudster. It was Feluda who had stolen from the safe with the help of Mr. Mallik, and there was no money in the safe, contrary to what Mr. Bhattacharya had said. Feluda also found a note with the answers written down from the meeting with Shyamlal Mallik.In his guise as 'Durlabh Mallik,' Bhattacharya told Shyamlal that the culprit was someone from his own house and advised him to move the money from the safe to a place where Feluda later found a hole. According to Bhattacharya Shyamlal had followed this advice. After a search of Bhattacharya's house, the attache of shyamlal was found there.Furthermore, Bhattacharya was wrong about the death of Jiban Mallik—he had never died. It had all been a plan to expose Bhattacharya's fraudulence. At that moment, Mr. Mallik appeared, proving the entire deception."

Feluda was originally written by Satyajit Ray for the children’s magazine ‘Sandesh�. The popularity of the series was such that Ray went on to include a few adult themes in the later stories when he realized that even adults were enjoying the series. I actually read Feluda before Agatha Christie and as such Feluda was my introduction to detective fiction. The best part of the stories is the evergreen manner of Ray’s narrative. I remember reading ‘Baadhshahi Angti� which was written in 1960s and when I visited Lucknow in 1990s, I could still recognize the places described in the book. The other thing that I loved about the series was that in every story we learned something new � be it about geometry or about telepathy. Absolutely and irrevocably in love with Feluda and his adventures � forever a fan.
