Christian Jacq
533听books914听followersChristian Jacq is a French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly.
Jacq's interest in Egyptology began when he was thirteen, and read History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization by Jacques Pirenne. This inspired him to write his first novel. He first visited Egypt when he was seventeen, went on to study Egyptology and archaeology at the Sorbonne, and is now one of the world's leading Egyptologists.
By the time he was eighteen, he had written eight books. His first commercially successful book was Champollion the Egyptian, published in 1987. As of 2004 he has written over fifty books, including several non-fiction books on the subject of Egyptology.
He and his wife later founded the Ramses Institute, which is dedicated to creating a photographic description of Egypt for the preservation of endangered archaeological sites.
Between 1995-1997, he published his best selling five book suite 搁补尘蝉猫蝉, which is today published in over twenty-five countries. Each volume encompasses one aspect of Ramesses' known historical life, woven into a fictional tapestry of the ancient world for an epic tale of love, life and deceit.
Jacq's series describes a vision of the life of the pharaoh: he has two vile power-hungry siblings, Shanaar, his decadent older brother, and Dolora, his corrupted older sister who married his teacher. In his marital life, he first has Isetnofret (Iset) as a mistress (second Great Wife), meets his true love Nefertari (first Great Wife) and after their death, gets married to Maetnefrure in his old age. Jacq gives Ramesses only three biological children: Kha'emweset, Meritamen (she being the only child of Nefertari, the two others being from Iset) and Merneptah. The other "children" are only young officials trained for government and who are nicknamed "sons of the pharaoh".

Me acojona criticar a Jacq. Es como sacrilegio (驴Faraonilegio?).
Vamos a lo positivo : al leer la novela te da mil detalles sobre la vida en el comienzo de la vida de Ramses II (el Ramses famoso, vamos) que supongo ser谩n verdad verdadera. Como es tan ajeno a nuestra vida supongo que es muy atrayente de leer y si te has empezado una novela de Jacq pues eso, que supongo es lo que se espera.
Ya he acabado con lo positivo 鈥�
Personajes 鈥� no veo. Hay nombres, Ramses, Seti, Nefertari, etc, que hacen cosas, que tiene que estar ah铆 porque son historia y han de aparecer. Ninguno tiene cuerpo ni mayor atractivo para el lector.
La trama, o m谩s bien 鈥渄e lo que aconteci贸 en tiempos de Seti y Ramses II鈥� tiene poco inter茅s. La vida del fulano est谩 aderezada por las intrigas palaciegas de su hermano Chenar y poco m谩s.
Los di谩logos merecen especial atenci贸n. Ejemplo :
鈥溾€擲oy el pr铆ncipe Rams茅s.
鈥擬e alegro por ti.
鈥擭ecesito una informaci贸n.
鈥擵e a ver a la polic铆a.
鈥擲贸lo t煤 puedes ayudarme.
鈥擬e sorprender铆a.
鈥擡stoy buscando a un carretero.
鈥擸o me ocupo de los caballos y de los carros.
鈥擡se hombre es un criminal fugado.
鈥擭o es asunto m铆o.鈥�
Vamos, que se comunican casi por telegrama. Curiosos, los egipcios鈥�
Y a pesar de todo, a pesar de todo, me lo he acabado y no me ha disgustado. 驴Lo poco positivo puede con todo lo dem谩s? No se, pero lo he le铆do con agrado. 驴Porque es sobre el gran Ramses?驴Porque la historia tiene suficiente fuerza a pesar de lo poco que me gusta su t茅cnica narrativa?Ni idea. De momento aparco el resto de la pentalog铆a sobre Ramses.

Clearly not my cup of tea. I can understand that when writing a historical novel about a long gone period it's almost impossible to avoid present concepts and present states of mind. But there are limits to my indulgence: stating that there were universities in ancient Egypte, around 1250 bce, and that certain people studied 'chemics', now that's a bridge too far. Also, the boyish, adventurous content of this novel isn't encouraging to invest time into this novel, and then I'm not even talking about the card board characters. Nope, as stated, historical novels, they are not my thing.

This is one of the worst books I've ever read. People eating croissants and calling on the police in ancient Egypt is bad enough, but the black and white portrayal of the characters and the stilted writing (though that may have been bad translation, I dunno) killed the book completely.

脠 un romanzo per ragazzi carino e storicamente accuratissimo, si capisce che Jacq 猫 un egittologo e ho apprezzato davvero tanto i dettagli sui mezzi di vita quotidiana degli antichi egizi. Forse pi霉 della trama in quanto tale, che sicuramente non 猫 male, anzi, va benissimo per staccare dai libri pi霉 pesanti, ma leggendo non ho vissuto appieno gli accadimenti, non mi sono immedesimata nei personaggi, di cui non ho odiato nessuno ma nemmeno ne trovato uno che mi piacesse davvero, a partire da Ramses, che 猫 un po' ossessionato dal proprio ego e non sembra troppo un ragazzino come dovrebbe essere.
Ho ricordato per tutte le 409 pagine che stavo leggendo solo un romanzo, e c'猫 anche un altro fatto: 猫 troppo lungo. Alla lunga, annoia, le situazioni si ripetono.
Per貌 a sua discolpa va detto che 猫 il primo di una serie di vari libri, quindi sicuramente fa da cappello introduttivo alla vicenda, perci貌 non sono troppo severa nel giudizio, anche perch茅 come dicevo 猫 perfetto per dare un equilibrio alle proprie letture, spaziando dai mattoni pi霉 pesanti a libri piacevoli e senza pretesa come questo. Legger貌 sicuramente gli altri della serie, perch茅 sono curiosa di sapere come proseguiranno le vite di Ramses e degli altri,e poi ho gi脿 comprato gli altri!.

I was in middle school when i bought this book and read it in the same day. In fact, i read the entire collection that day from early morning to late evening, 12 hours of nonstop reading and i didn't regret one second of it. It was a miracle that they translated it into Romanian, because honestly speaking, i don't get on well with French and French doesn't get on well with me.I haven't reread this book since then, but to my 12-13 year old brain, this book (and the others from the Ramses Series) was a masterpiece. OK, i do admit of having a weak spot for any type of book which focuses on Egypt, but Ramses the Great has been a favorite of mine since the beginning. The characters were well constructed and had a certain magic of their own, the plot kept me with my eyes nearly glued to the paper until i was sure the ink would probably remain stamped on my eyeballs, the details, the world construction and the amount of research into that period made me gain a very big dose of respect for this author and this book. I was dead tired, but kept on reading and sometimes rereading several pages that i liked most.
I loved the characters, lived the story along with them, experienced their emotions and made me, as a reader feel completely engrossed in it. In my opinion, this is one of the essential requirements for a well written book. And this series didn't fail me in this aspect. True, it probably won't make me feel exactly the same, now after all these years, if i pick it up again and start rereading it since i have read a looot more and broadened my horizons, but this don't change that i absolutely adored everything about these books. I laughed with the characters, i cried with them and otherwise experienced everything in those hours while i read the books. They might not seem so epic to other people, but to me, they have been the reason i later on picked up every book i spotted or managed to put my hand on and read it with the same zeal and devotion.
All in all, the Ramses series is a must on my list and on my bookshelves. Definably unforgettable after all this years.I know a lot of people won't share my enthusiasm and love for these books, but it's one person's point of view; i for one adore anything Egyptian and i do admit my review might have been slightly - or more so - influenced by this. But it is still a big favorite and i recommend it to anybody who shares my passion for Egypt and the times of old.

Although this book isn't as half awful as its sequels, it's still pretty damn awful. Maybe the author isn't to blame; it could be just a case of poor translation into English which explains its flat prose and cringingly bad dialogue. If not, I'm amazed at how Jacq is able to get these books published. His history's pretty much on the money - I won't deny I learned quite a lot about Ancient Egypt just from reading these novels, but in that case maybe the guy (a respected Egyptologist, I later found out) should just stick to a non-fiction about the life of Pharaoh Ramesses the Great. I'm sure it would have made for equally enjoyable reading. A lot of the scenes lack the emotional depth that should come with writing; Jacq seems to think describing religious rituals and stocktaking what was in a genuine ancient Egyptian granary makes up for the virtually non-existent sense of life in the time of Pharaoh Seti.
A lot of the characters are two-dimensional and never get the chance to develop at all through the story. With maybe the exception of Iset the Fair, I couldn't develop any sense of empathy with any of the characters. That's probably the main problem for me with this book. I noticed later in the series that conflicts (a lot of them nothing more than cartoonish villains plotting away for 60% of the books) became circular and extremely repetitive. I'm looking back on this series in retrospect, but when you compare works like this to Jacq's other novels it's not difficult to see he keeps rehashing them same material over and over.
I give this book 2 stars, partly because I adore Ancient Egypt whatever the quality of writing and also because the novel makes for very light, almost unconscious reading for those days when you need to pass a few hours in the backseat of a car.

The Ramses series is pretty nice to read - as long as you take it as fiction with some historic background. But if you are looking for some insight into egyptian history on the base of a well-written novel, you will be disappointed.
Ramses and his wife Nefertari are modern people, openminded and curious as the best examples of anybody living in the late 20th century. They reveal nothing about what it must have been to live in ancient Egypt. Besides, the novels sometimes get a little boring - too much repetition at the beginning of every book, too much irrelevant events.
Keep in mind you will need to read/buy all 5 volumes in this series to find out the conclusion!!

O prim膬 parte destul de promi葲膬toare a acestui roman alc膬tuit din cinci p膬r葲i ce este dedicat celui mai faimos faraon din istorie, Ramses al II-lea. Faptul c膬 autorul este un celebru egiptolog face ca a葯tept膬rile s膬 fie cu at芒t mai ridicate.
Dar, cel pu葲in 卯n prima parte, aceste a葯tept膬ri nu au fost dec芒t par葲ial confirmate. Povestea este relativ bine construit膬 卯n ciuda prezen葲ei unor anacronisme - de exemplu, Homer este strecurat 卯n carte, de parc膬 ar fi fost contemporan cu Ramses, unul dintre colegii de 葯coal膬 ai lui Ramses declar膬 c膬 vrea s膬 卯n葲eleag膬 "cum func葲ioneaz膬 comer葲ul interna葲ional" etc. - dar vorbim totu葯i despre o oper膬 de fic葲iune 葯i nu despre o monografie istoric膬, a葯a c膬 ar fi mult prea facil膬 葯i inadecvat膬 o critic膬 care vine exclusiv din aceast膬 direc葲ie. Problema principal膬, cel pu葲in din punctul meu de vedere, a romanului are leg膬tur膬 cu faptul c膬 este destul de liniar 葯i oarecum schematic, de parc膬 autorul ar urma cu fidelitate un plan de lucru foarte bine pus la punct 葯i singura sa preocupare este s膬 nu se abat膬 de la acest plan. 脦ntr-un fel este de 卯n葲eles, dat fiind faptul c膬 vorbim despre o carte 卯n cinci volume.
Ramses: Fiul luminii este, cel pu葲in 卯n prima parte, o poveste frumoas膬 de prietenie dintre c芒葲iva colegi de 葯coal膬, dintre care cei mai cunoscu葲i sunt Ramses, fiul cel mic al faraonului Seti, 葯i Moise. 脦n modul cel mai intempestiv cu putin葲膬 卯葯i face apari葲ia fratele cel mare al lui Ramses, 葮enar, ce este absolut convins c膬 el va fi urm膬torul faraon: "Un fotoliu purtat pe umeri se apropia de intrarea 卯n grajduri. Nu trebuie un foarte mare efort de imagina葲ie pentru a vedea cum distribuie autorul personajele pe tabla de 葯ah: Elena va fi de partea lui Ramses, iar turbulentul Menelau de aceea a lui 葮enar.
Tocmai atunci, Tuya, so葲ia lui Seti, anun葲膬 decesul faraonului: "脦n al cincisprezecelea an de domnie, Faraonul 卯葯i 卯ntorsese fa葲a spre lumea de dincolo, spre mama celest膬 care-l va na葯te 卯n fiecare noapte pentru a-l face s膬 renasc膬 卯n momentul ivirii zorilor precum un nou soare; fra葲ii lui, zeii, 卯l vor primi 卯n paradis, unde, vindecat de moarte, va tr膬i prin Maat.
Perioada de doliu 卯ncepu imediat.
Templele se 卯nchiser膬 葯i activitatea ritual膬 se 卯ntrerupse, cu excep葲ia c芒nturilor funebre, diminea葲a 葯i seara. Timp de 葯aptezeci de zile, b膬rba葲ii nu se vor mai b膬rbieri, femeile 卯葯i vor despleti p膬rul 葯i nu se vor consuma carne 葯i vin; birourile scribilor vor fi goale, iar administra葲ia 卯葯i va opri activitatea".
Dar toat膬 lumea a葯teapt膬 cu sufletul la gur膬 deznod膬m芒ntul confrunt膬rii dintre cei doi fra牛i. Lectur膬 pl膬cut膬!
Dar, cel pu葲in 卯n prima parte, aceste a葯tept膬ri nu au fost dec芒t par葲ial confirmate. Povestea este relativ bine construit膬 卯n ciuda prezen葲ei unor anacronisme - de exemplu, Homer este strecurat 卯n carte, de parc膬 ar fi fost contemporan cu Ramses, unul dintre colegii de 葯coal膬 ai lui Ramses declar膬 c膬 vrea s膬 卯n葲eleag膬 "cum func葲ioneaz膬 comer葲ul interna葲ional" etc. - dar vorbim totu葯i despre o oper膬 de fic葲iune 葯i nu despre o monografie istoric膬, a葯a c膬 ar fi mult prea facil膬 葯i inadecvat膬 o critic膬 care vine exclusiv din aceast膬 direc葲ie. Problema principal膬, cel pu葲in din punctul meu de vedere, a romanului are leg膬tur膬 cu faptul c膬 este destul de liniar 葯i oarecum schematic, de parc膬 autorul ar urma cu fidelitate un plan de lucru foarte bine pus la punct 葯i singura sa preocupare este s膬 nu se abat膬 de la acest plan. 脦ntr-un fel este de 卯n葲eles, dat fiind faptul c膬 vorbim despre o carte 卯n cinci volume.
Ramses: Fiul luminii este, cel pu葲in 卯n prima parte, o poveste frumoas膬 de prietenie dintre c芒葲iva colegi de 葯coal膬, dintre care cei mai cunoscu葲i sunt Ramses, fiul cel mic al faraonului Seti, 葯i Moise. 脦n modul cel mai intempestiv cu putin葲膬 卯葯i face apari葲ia fratele cel mare al lui Ramses, 葮enar, ce este absolut convins c膬 el va fi urm膬torul faraon: "Un fotoliu purtat pe umeri se apropia de intrarea 卯n grajduri. Fastul demonstra 卯n suficient膬 m膬sur膬 rangul celui care-l ocupa. Cu spatele sprijinit de un sp膬tar 卯nalt, picioarele a葯ezate pe un sc膬unel, m芒inile odihnindu-se pe bra葲ele fotoliului, av芒nd capul protejat de un parasol, 卯naltul personaj 卯葯i tampona fruntea cu o batist膬 parfumat膬.
Cam de dou膬zeci de ani, cu chipul rotund, aproape ca o lun膬 plin膬, obrajii durdulii, ochii mici 葯i c膬prui, buzele groase 葯i pofticioase, nobilul, bine hr膬nit 葯i evident ostil oric膬rui exerci葲iu fizic, ap膬sa greu pe umerii celor doisprezece purt膬tori ai scaunului, de altfel bine pl膬ti葲i pentru rapiditatea lor".
Rela葲ia dintre cei doi fra牛i nu va fi deloc armonioas膬, sora acestora, Dolenta, nefiind nici pe departe cineva care s膬 asigure echilibrul. Din p膬cate pentru 葮enar, faptul c膬 este primul n膬scut nu echivaleaz膬 cu garan葲ia faptului c膬 va fi desemnat drept succesor al tat膬lui s膬u.
Pe de alt膬 parte, vremurile sunt destul de instabile: hiti葲ii din nord 葯i-ar dori s膬 distrug膬 pacea de suprafa葲膬 cu Egiptul, iar 卯n sud nubienii pun 葯i ei ceva la cale. Pentru Ramses aceste mi葯c膬ri r膬zboinice ale vecinilor reprezint膬 cel mai bun prilej s膬 ias膬 卯n eviden葲膬, a葯a c膬 Seti 卯l va numi succesorul s膬u. 脦葯i asigur膬 astfel cele mai profunde sentimente de ur膬 din partea lui 葮enar, ce se preg膬te葯te s膬 organizeze "un r膬zboi subteran 卯mpotriva lui Ramses".
Dar t芒n膬rul are alte preocup膬ri: se c膬s膬tore葯te cu frumoasa Nefertari.

Non ci siamo.
Con tutto il rispetto per l'originalit脿 di Jacq negli anni '90, ma siamo ben lontani dalla qualit脿 e dalla tridimensionalit脿 della saga egizia di Wilbur Smith. Impossibile non fare paragoni.
La prosa di Jacq 猫 banale, vuole dare una visione sterile di un Egitto perfetto, da cartolina. L'Egitto di Smith, invece, 猫 da respirare: odori, sapori, miseria e nobilt脿 si mischiano in un concerto cos矛 realistico e pieno da togliere il fiato. I personaggi di Smith (faraoni, schiavi ecc.) sembravano persone reali, che potevo toccare!
E qu矛 arriviamo a un grande difetto di Jacq: i suoi personaggi sono piatti, bidimensionali. Anzi, hanno pi霉 "carattere" quelli secondari che Ramses (il protagonista) stesso; tutto onore, impostato, infallibile, finto e noioso fino al midollo. Introspezione praticamente zero o, se c'猫, 猫 cos矛 banale e prevedibile da pensare che chiunque potrebbe mettersi a scrivere una grossa fanfiction su Ramses. La sua storia con Iset ridotta a una banalit脿 disarmante, zero trasporto. Scene "di sesso" descritte in mezza riga cos矛 scrausa e meccanica da far sbadigliare.
Dialoghi sempre botta e risposta (non riusciamo mai a immaginarci le pose, le espressioni dei personaggi). Le uniche note interessanti sono gli usi e i costumi sulle divinit脿, raccontate attraverso il personaggio di Sethi, anch'esso poco credibile, piatto come un foglio di cartapesta.
Delusione. Comunque, il mio giudizio si basa solo sul primo libro, non legger貌 mai i restanti quattro sequel.

I read this series in turkish when I was in high school and I remember it blew my mind. Not only because I'm an Egypt fan but also it was written quite beautifully. It was extremely engaging and I remember I couldn't put it down until the whole series was over, and there were five books if I remember correctly- it was a long time ago, am I getting old?
I always felt like I could read this seres over and over again, except perhaps for the final book which was the most heartbreaking. It took me longer to finish that one than the rest of the books in the series but it was completely worth it.

A bestseller in Europe in the 90's, the writing may have suffered in translation. Very simple style which makes it very easy to read but lacks the weight of a well-written novel. This first in the series follows Ramses from about age 14 to 18, when his father (Seti) dies. As in royal courts everywhere it seems, the behind the scenes machinations abound, most perpetuated by Ramses' older brother Shaanar in his attempt to ensure his own claim to the throne. Lots of familiar characters if you read this era of Egyptian history populate the pages.

I really tried to like this book, but after 120 pages, I put it down and I have no desire to read anymore. There really just isn't any substance, it's very thin. Maybe it's the translation but I just couldn't get into it. Life is too short to read books you don't like.

En esta novela no he notado la misma pasi贸n que el escritor puso en la novela de La reina sol. Sin embargo, est谩 bien escrita y la historia es interesante desde el punto de vista hist贸rico y por los personajes bien caracterizados por el autor.

Nachdem der Autor ein 脛gyptologe ist, nahm ich an dass alles in diesem Buch den geschichtlichen Tatsachen entspricht. Ein bisschen googeln zeigte mir aber, dass er sich sehr wohl zahlreiche dichterische Freiheiten genommen hat. Und zwar nicht nur bei den Dingen, die man sich zwangsl盲ufig ausdenken muss weil man sie gar nicht wissen kann, sondern auch was belegte Fakten bez眉glich der famili盲ren Verh盲ltnisse angeht. So wurde Ramses II. in Wirklichkeit bereits mit 14 verheiratet. Und er hatte zwar einen 盲lteren Bruder, doch dieser verstarb bereits als Teenager. Somit ist die zentrale Story - die intriganten Machenschaften des eifers眉chtigen Bruders, der selbst gerne Thronfolger werden w眉rde - komplett erfunden. Schade, aber Christian Jacq meinte wohl, er m眉sse die Geschichte spannender machen als sie in Wirklichkeit war.
Das generelle Leben in 脛gypten zu dieser Zeit, und besonders am Hofe, fand ich allerdings auch sehr interessant. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, wie weit entwickelt diese Gesellschaft schon war, was sie schon wussten, konnten und erfunden hatten - und wie ungebildet und primitiv das Volk 2500 Jahre sp盲ter im Mittelalter lebte. Zumindest in Mitteleuropa, 眉ber 脛gypten aus dieser Zeit wei脽 ich gar nichts. Ebenfalls spannend finde ich, wie viel Arch盲ologen aus den Fundst眉cken aus dieser Pharaonenzeit herauslesen und rekonstruieren k枚nnen. Wirklich beeindruckend! Wenn ich mir jetzt nochmal einen Beruf aussuchen k枚nnte, w盲re es - zumindest kurz nach dieser Lekt眉re - auf jeden Fall Arch盲ologe gewesen.

Ein bisschen googeln zeigte mir aber, dass er sich sehr wohl zahlreiche dichterische Freiheiten genommen hat. Und zwar nicht nur bei den Dingen, die man sich zwangsl盲ufig ausdenken muss weil man sie gar nicht wissen kann, sondern auch was belegte Fakten bez眉glich der famili盲ren Verh盲ltnisse angeht. So wurde Ramses II. in Wirklichkeit bereits mit 14 verheiratet. Und er hatte zwar einen 盲lteren Bruder, doch dieser verstarb bereits als Teenager. Somit ist die zentrale Story - die intriganten Machenschaften des eifers眉chtigen Bruders, der selbst gerne Thronfolger werden w眉rde - komplett erfunden. Schade, aber Christian Jacq meinte wohl, er m眉sse die Geschichte spannender machen als sie in Wirklichkeit war.
Das generelle Leben in 脛gypten zu dieser Zeit, und besonders am Hofe, fand ich allerdings auch sehr interessant. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, wie weit entwickelt diese Gesellschaft schon war, was sie schon wussten, konnten und erfunden hatten - und wie ungebildet und primitiv das Volk 2500 Jahre sp盲ter im Mittelalter lebte. Zumindest in Mitteleuropa, 眉ber 脛gypten aus dieser Zeit wei脽 ich gar nichts. Ebenfalls spannend finde ich, wie viel Arch盲ologen aus den Fundst眉cken aus dieser Pharaonenzeit herauslesen und rekonstruieren k枚nnen. Wirklich beeindruckend! Wenn ich mir jetzt nochmal einen Beruf aussuchen k枚nnte, w盲re es - zumindest kurz nach dieser Lekt眉re - auf jeden Fall Arch盲ologe gewesen.

I read about seven chapters into this book and just couldn't force it upon myself any longer. It looked promising, but the plot is--for lack of a better word--cheesy and the dialogue is just plain terrible. It was also poorly researched.
Bottom line: bad writing, IMO.
Perhaps this author should be writing for a younger audience rather than adults. Take out the sexual content and it could be easily marketed toward the 12+ age group.
