And Their Memory Was a Bitter Tree: Queen of the Black Coast and Others

Rate this book
As one of the three most important American pulp fantasy authors of the 1930s (with Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith), Robert E. Howard captivated readers with his indomitable, battle-scarred barbarian hero Conan. Though Howard's life ended prematurely in 1936 at the age of 30, Conan lives on as one of the genre's most enduring icons. This beautifully designed collection contains nine essential Conan stories along with a full-length Conan novel. Also included is The Hyborean Age, Howard's fascinating history of the raw, blood-drenched world Conan inhabited, an alternative Earth that preceded Tolkien's Middle Earth. And Their Memory Was a Bitter Tree features a color map of this realm and an interior painting by cult artist Brom, along with a series of Frank Frazetta's seminal Conan paintings, appearing for the first time with the stories for which they were created.

About the author

Robert E. Howard

Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror."

He is well known for having created—in the pages of the legendary Depression-era pulp magazine Weird Tales—the character Conan the Cimmerian, a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond.

Pretty good collection of Conan stories in a gorgeous package. There is probably nothing here you haven't already read if you are a Conan fan, and in fact some of Howard's best Conan stories do not appear. If you are new to Conan, you would probably be better served by getting the three volume set published by Del Rey a few years ago. Still, the color illustrations by Frank Franzetta are a nice touch, and this is a very good looking book. 4/5

And Their Memory Was a Bitter Tree is an excellent collection of Conan stories written by the late Robert E. Howard. This particular edition (hardcover by Black Bart Publishing) is absolutely stunning, from the detailed end papers of the The Hyborean Age, to the gorgeous artwork by Brom and Frank Frazetta.

The stories featured in this book are superb examples of Howard's storytelling mastery. While some of the language is a bit antiquated (circa 1930) it does not detract from Howard's action-packed eloquence. Frequently, I found his prose both mesmerizing and poetic; The Queen of the Black Coast is a perfect example.

Folks, forget what you've seen in the movies. This is the authentic Conan the Cimmerian, in all of his brutish glory; a truly iconic character that will last the ages.

If you are fortunate enough to come across this book, grab it! It's truly one-of-a kind!

For anyone who ever wondered about the origins & beginnings of the amazing character of Conan, this book is a must read compilation. The impact that Howard's physical descriptions had on me have affected my appreciation for storytelling in a way I had not thought the written word could. At times I've tensed up in comparable ways as that of the protagonist, as he strained against insurmountable & often supernatural odds. Also of note, the story entitled Queen of the Black Coast tells the tale of one of Conan's first & my favorite loves. Sword & Sorcery at it's most raw. Simple at times in it's formation, though deep in the moment in a very compelling way. It may just have you looking for more by the author.

I bought this book because it is beautiful and looks nice on my shelf. I read all these stories 35 years ago and have loved them ever since. Kind of an odd mix of stories with some of the best not included.

A fantastic read as all Howard's fantasy works are. This book comes complete with REH's eulogy as written by his friend, H.P. Lovecraft. Wonderful cover artwork by Brom.

I already have most of these stories in other editions. I bought this one because it is a beautiful book with paintings by Brom and Frank Frazetta.
