This is basically the female fantasy lol. Lisa is lucky to find a hot rich gentleman that falls in love with her. The plot, itself, is very common. We've seen this story played out a million times before. Coffee & Vanilla doesn't bring anything new to the plate. The girl is pretty but shy and meek and the guy is this outgoing and confident man that will take care of her. (Sounds super familiar doesn't it?) But if you don't care about those things and if you are specifically looking for a manga like this, then lack of originality won't bother you.
Hm, how to be delicate in this review so that Risa-Chan, the heroine / protagonist, does not blush, feel awkward, clench her skirt, become doe-eyed, linger on forever as to what she wants, what is happening to her, where she is living, who she is living with, who she sees and what she says to them, how to finish a single sentence, and how in god¡¯s name did this 20 year old naive and inexperienced village girl end up in college - in city - on her own - and is still alive and breathing, an accomplishment she acknowledges on page one of Volume 1 itself? All of which makes Hiroto, the 32-year old man-of-her-and-every-other-woman-in-this-manga-including-her-own-mother¡¯s dreams, be in awe of her and keep reciting ¡°you are so Kawaii¡± ¡°you are so Kawaii¡± (Japanese word for cute; being cute is a huge cultural thing over there, like the holy grail of girl-hood.) He is Mr. Coolness personified, wrapped forever in suits (with and without ties), no slackers/ sneakers on this one. And we haven¡¯t even gotten to the sex part yet! Where Risa again blushes, feels awkward, clenches her skirt or Hiroto¡¯s shoulder, becomes doe-eyed, lingers on forever as to what is going on and why and how, and goes all confused and plays dead fish with hand on mouth, till aroused by a very patient and eager Hiroto, who guides her on how she should feel, when to look at him, and whether she is happy or alright even if the act lasted two seconds more than yesterday, because she still is so Kawaiiiiiii to him. She is not without suitors either: there¡¯s Hiroto¡¯s business rival and her college peer. Hiroto has plenty, including Risa's best friend. So if some guy is not falling for her, someone is falling for him.
I would like to know what Risa is majoring, minoring in, in university (and how did she get there?) Because there isn¡¯t much studying going on in this one, just an ultimate CosmoMagazine-Fantasy-For-Asian-School Girls thing, where the ultimate manga model of a dream boat is literally given to Risa on a platter: an extremely good-looking, worldly, experienced, confident, passionate, horny, in-your-face-to-make-you-flustered-at-your-every-move so that he can tell you ¡°you are so Kawaii,¡± self-made tycoon of coffee shops, with a dark, selfish past, who is great in cooking and housework, and saving damsels in distress, who propositions to Ma¡¯am Kawaii on day/date one and takes her promptly to his plush lodgings where she stays put, his duplicate key in her hand, getting eased into all matters of sex (always missionary, with suggestive one-liners from Hiroto, and maybe double-entendres on various uses of ice cream since she is so fond of it; no ¡®Fifty Shades¡¯ here; the sex scenes reminded me of those U.S. PassionFlix TV films; for all his 'worldliness,' he never discusses birth control / condoms and he keeps preparing her for all the ¡®adult stuff¡¯ below his belt that she needs to get a hang of - no pun intended - which is still pending in Vol. 6, even after daily routine sex), while she stays nervous on how to be a perfect shoulder / socialite / partner for Hiroto - without losing her Kawaii - without knowing how to go about it (especially since she does not know anything about the guy.)
I wonder when Risa has time to study? Because she spends a lot of time shopping, getting dressed, undressed, blushing, feeling awkward, clenching her skirt, going doe-eyed at unwanted male attention she has no idea how to ward off (in such situations, her fall-back measure - also her signature sex move - is to close her eyes and be very uncomfortable - without budging an inch). Her time (and this manga) lingers on her thoughts, assumptions, fears and training on ¡®how to last a night in bed doing stuff other than sleeping.¡¯ She also feels like a princess now that she has ¡®Fukami-San¡¯ (aka) Hiroto in her life.
Of course, she does not know Hiroto and keeps wondering his motives, past, future, though their conversation is never on this topic. The guy is CEO of a company but it seems like he is babysitting her and then having sex with her, while she blushes, feels awkward, clenches her skirt, becomes doe-eyed, lingers on forever as to what she wants, what is happening to her and what she should do in any situation requiring more from her than mere breathing. She doesn¡¯t even realize Hiroto, the guy she¡¯s living with, is sick - till he faints! She also inexplicably accepts and works at the cafe¡¯ of Hiroto¡¯s business rival who made an unpleasant move on her (in the #metoo generation, it would be sexual harassment prosecutable in a court of law), and where her university peer also works, who also made an unwanted move on her (bad enough to get that student into trouble with the principal.) But Hiroto fixes the student by showing him as the kid he is, and fixes his business rival by crashing his biz stocks, and rescues Risa from a stranger making an unwanted move on her - which she doesn't know how to get away from (just walk away?) He does it in the presence of the other two, hence killing 3 birds with one stone. Lesson: men deal with men the way only men know! Women needn't worry (to grow a brain or a pair)!
How did Risa get into college? Did she pass any entrance exam?
You understand the space vacuum and density of the air in her head only when Hiroto meets her parents in her village in Vol.4. The mother is shocked at the incredible catch her daughter has landed and proceeds on to wonder ¡°has she been troubling you?¡± to which the alpha-male, ever-powerful, brainy, king of the world Hiroto says ¡°she¡¯s so cute, it¡¯s like I¡¯m dreaming.¡± Her parents object to the glaring age gap between the two. Risa promptly does what any self-respecting village belle would do: walk off into the village hills, get hurt, get lost, till Hiroto¡¯s helicopter comes saves her, satisfying the parents with a single lift.
How did Risa survive in this peaceful village for 19 years? What did she learn over there?
But let¡¯s not blame the 20-year old heroine, when the 32-year old moonshine hero decided to live and love forever a bumbling, clueless, moronic girl attuned to replying in monosyllables, who probably will never finish college, has no professional goals, and has yet to make any kind of first sexual move on him, always frightened or bewildered (he finds it all very Kawaii.) More red flags on the guy's judgement include: agreeing to be the male host for his trashy mom¡¯s hostess business - even though he is CEO of some big company. Couldn't he just give her money? (Risa works there too, to support him!) So maybe he was looking for the exact opposite of his domineering, materialistic and opportunistic mother? Maybe this is Hiroto¡¯s first live-action-female relationship, after a lifelong preference for robotic AI dolls in the past? Then again, he does ¡®pet¡¯ her like a dog. So, who knows?!
How did he ever make his millions? (¡°Risa, my future is yours to hold, my memories myself, I¡¯ll carve them out and give them all to you¡± before driving more sex-miles in the last chapter to a blushing dead-wood Risa.)
This is a delicate review of a story clearly aimed at showing an unsullied, pure, out-of-her-depth girl who by fate and design, is thrown in the arms of an eligible bachelor, whose love for her will eventually teach her to be extremely confident, stylish, talkative and calling the shots in bed, without losing any of her Kawaii (probably by Volume 22.) The manga works for the well-drawn smutty scenes - only if you are a 14 year old - which come in the middle of every Volume, like clockwork. But if the ice cream Hiroto is holding on the front page of each volume with an open mouthed Risa is enough of a clue, then it¡¯s going to melt before he gets any action from her side.
I just kept wondering who is the target audience for this popular manga, which is still ongoing (Vol.6, Chapter 25 is not the end - because Risa-sama hasn¡¯t turned into the perfect ¡®adult¡¯ for Hiroto Fukami-San).
Artwork is similar to many others I¡¯ve read. Risa irritated me to no end - calling her a bimbo is too nice a word - and Hiroto is a cardboard dummy who likes to make out with dummies.
(read the manga via website source: mangarock though its on mangakakalot too; Original: Source: Chibi Manga: Scanner: Taka Miaka, Translator: Maya/Nelze / Jyu East, Proofreader: Nichii / Katie / Fabulous Lumberjack / Gail, Re-drawer: Prem / Yoruchan, Cleaner: Jasmine / Taka Miaka / Yoruchan / Ryan, Typesetter: Taka Miaka, Editor: Xhiara, QCER: Taka Miaka)
I read this back in 6th/7th grade, and I remember not really liking it¡ªthat still holds true today, about 4 years later.
I mainly recall not being the biggest fan of Risa because of how much she stuttered and blushed (it can be cute to some extent, but I just found it annoying in this, as it literally happened during every interaction she had with Fukami), but what I didn't recall was how insta-lovey it was. Fukami literally says that he fell in love with Risa at first sight, and in the span of a mere three days, Risa loses her first kiss AND virginity to Fukami, the two of them profess their undying love for one another, and Fukami gifts Risa a promise ring, as well as the key to his apartment/house/wherever he's living. Keep in mind that this all happened in the span of three short days. It's all... quite bizarre.
I found Fukami to be a bit weird/creepy. Him claiming to fall in love with Risa at first sight was very strange to me... OMFG WAIT I THINK I REMEMBER SOMETHING FROM WHEN I READ THIS BOOK IN MIDDLE SCHOOL...... sorry about that. As I was saying, I found that to be a bit outrageous and unrealistic, and I just didn't buy it. It does make a little more sense if what I remember is correct though... I also found it to be sketchy when Fukami said he wanted Risa to know more about him, but then proceeded to divert the conversation every time she asked him a question. Risa was cute, but as I said before, she acted excessively shy, to an annoying extent. She was also really na?ve, and I wished that she would've used her critical thinking skills a bit more.
I'm not even gonna lie¡ªthe art in this is absolutely stunning. I also find this manga to be really nostalgic, and it's quite the cute, light-hearted read. I definitely don't hate everything about this, but it's not a favorite either. I might read the other volumes, but I'm not entirely sure right now. I guess we'll see ;)
? Bossy, dominant, salary-man President (Fukami-san). ? Meek, shy, suddenly-popular University student (Risa-chan). ? Age Gap Romance [ 12 years ] ? Two persistent OMs. ? Insta-love. ? Made into drama of the same name. ? Happy ending.
The drama too did justice to the manga since I hardly spotted anything that's been changed in the adaptation. Even the dialogues were almost the same. I rated it with 4 stars since Risa's meekness was exemplified which made it overtly clich¨¨.
This is what happen when we trust tiktok recs. Where is the plot? Everything happens so fast. If I continue, I might use the original copy as Japanese practice....reading this for fun just killed my remaining two braincells. This is on Netflix though. I guess I should just go watch that instead.
Note: a condensed edition is available in case you prefer not to rate by volume. Coffee & Vanilla has beautifully drawn characters but so far, the plot is a bit gushy. Honestly, it¡¯s a bit rushed, and she didn't even know his first name on the day she slept with him. The insta-love might give off bad vibes since he declares love after one day but manages not to contact her for a weeks-long period. It's a bit too rushed to be believable. The fears of her friend that he's just a serial seducer are (supposedly) refuted when he shows up and takes her for a passion-filled night. Honestly, it feels like this is the perfect setup for a dark romance.
Fourth time reading this! I seriously love this manga so much! I always like a no misunderstanding all lovey-dovey and wonderful love relationship!
My third time reading this comic, and it's sooooo good! I wish they would update slightly faster. I'm even reading the chinese version as they update faster and when the english version gets put up, I read it again, that's how much I love this story and the characters.
It's more of a "guilty pleasure" read? Since the plot is really here and there with love at first sight as the concept, but wow the romance is so sweet at times!
I read this so many years ago when I was like in middle/high school? I was thinking about it again for some reason and decided to reread and ah shojo manga never change (please do).
It¡¯s kinda funny how everything moved so fast, they¡¯re already in love and dating after knowing each other for two hours and the funniest part was when they were dating for a week and she doesn¡¯t even know his first name. Where¡¯s the tension or like buildup? And also what does a 32 year old man have in common with a 19 year old university student (at least she¡¯s not a high schooler).
There's no plot? It's basically a women's fantasy ¨C to be in a relationship with a young, successful, handsome, rich man?
I only managed to read it because the art is wonderful (and not gonna lie, I'm a sucker for those age gap-romances), but ultimately the "plot" is way out of touch.
Although, the good thing about this is that it's good buffer read. Since there's no plot, there's not really much to contemplate on. I think I would recommend this in between reading heavier material/s.
I came here because I¡¯ve watch the drama, and good thing I saw it first and explains to me WHY IT WAS SO FAST LIKE THIS IN VOLUME 1 ALONE. Anyway regardless knowing it in the drama, it still felt rush. I mean she easily gets swayed right? Anyway I love the art, both handsome and pretty and well I¡¯m off to next.
I know it's typical for this subgenre to just go straight into the relationship and sex without much plot or explanation, but I'm just unsettled by their relationship and I don't trust him, lmao, so I'm dropping this.
Not-so-bad manga with a common plot (a cute shy and reserved girl with a perfect handsome rich man). Pretty art tho (the only thing that makes me want to finish it). And smutty. Very very smutty.
I picked up the English translation of ''Coffee & Vanilla'', and honestly, it left me feeling conflicted. The story follows a young, inexperienced girl who falls into a whirlwind romance with a confident, older man. However, instead of being a sweet love story, it felt unsettling at times. The girl seemed completely controlled and devoid of her own identity¡ªthough, to be fair, she never really had one to begin with.
The depiction of their relationship was deeply problematic. The power imbalance was glaring, with the male lead constantly dictating her actions under the guise of ¡°teaching¡± her about love and boosting her confidence. While it¡¯s easy to see why some might view this as a guilty pleasure, the portrayal lacked nuance and leaned heavily into uncomfortable territory.
The drama adaptation was even more difficult to watch. The controlling dynamics came across as even more blatant, making the romance feel uneasy rather than endearing. If you step back and try to rationalize it, there¡¯s a case to be made that the male lead helped her grow in confidence and experience, but the overall execution made it hard to accept.
Ultimately, ''Coffee & Vanilla'' is a story that tries to balance romance and control but fails to strike the right tone. It¡¯s not entirely bad¡ªit has moments of guilty indulgence¡ªbut the lack of agency for the female lead and the uneasy dynamics make it a tough read. For those who enjoy this type of trope, it might work, but it¡¯s not without its flaws.

Okay. I think I've given my heart a bit of a break, I can now write about this steamy series. I'm impressed by this manga because it made me squeal! Like *shoujo girl* typical squeal, flailing arms and everything, it was ALL there. Coffee & Vanilla has beautifully drawn characters with a plot that punches you in the face. It's a nice punch though, it's like,BAM, a flowery explosion with waves of desire mixed in. Lets just say that it's potent.
*sigh* The plot is lacking though. If you were on the search for something with depth and breath look somewhere else. (what I mean is, we don't really get to know her backstory or his. But HEY, if that doesn't really bother you then it's fabulous!)
I would say it's a perfect read for something naughty, quick, and overly gushy with smoldering eyes.
(There was one scene that was off putting, but stick in there he's a decent guy, even if he does have a bit of a sadistic streak.)
The whole series is a big cliche but for some reason I loved it SO MUCH. I was exploding with butterflies ?
¡ª¡ª spoilers ¡ª¡ª-
There were too many new characters to instigate jealousy, plot line was good and FUKAMI SAN is SO HOT but I wish Risa had more backbone and had future plans for herself outside of being a good wife for Hiroto
Problems that arose were solved too quickly. Everything was solved through Risa¡¯s kindness and cuteness so not much substance ? BUT I STILL LOVED IT.
If you accept the plot as a ?female fantasy manga?, this manga is ¡¡ bad.
But if you, like me, struggle to accept that a main character can be so naive, innocent, helpless - it seems as she is unable to act on her own and is completely dependent on others, and with her antagonist - a man that is exactly like every woman's dream man - who also happens to love this naive protagonist after ONE meeting, then this Manga is ¡¡. TRASH (in my case, it¡¯s also a guilty pleasure, ¡®cause I actually enjoyed reading this manga a little bit ¡ but as a fantasy manga though.)
I know there's a lot more to this, but there wasn't anything that made me want to stick to it to find out. It went super fast, there was no... anything to make it worth reading. Straight forward two people falling head over heels in about 2 chapters. Not for me. I enjoy SOME drama. It doesn't have to be all about it, but something, or a slow burn, or... anything. The only thing this had going for it was good artwork.
