That moment you look back on and think, what if I had made a different decision, how would my life have changed.Ìý
Troy doesn't need to wonder.Ìý He's afflicted by a condition that lets him live out different futures - too many of them. Jaded by all these possibilities, he drifts from day to day never knowing if what he's living is real life or just a possible one.
When he first meets Cat, it's not even close to love at first sight. She pepper sprays him and steals his phone. But then he meets her again, and again. Finally, he becomes convinced that this funny, crazy, woman might be just what he needs. But in his strange world of possibilities nothing is straightforward.
Writing is one of those things that I have always done. I vividly remember spending most of an English exam writing a complicated adventure story as the answer to an exam question. I passed the exam, either because of, or despite the answer.
I tend to write the story that comes to mind, regardless of genre.
When I picked up “Troy’s Possibilities I didn’t know what to expect. I knew it was written by an unknown author, his debut novel, with a blurry description. Is it sci-fi? Drama? General fiction?
I don’t regret giving this book a chance, I have found a profound drama, which leaves you thinking deeply about the meaning of things and your own course of life. However, even after reading it I can’t seem to be able to label it, which is maybe a good thing, but sadly may get other people to ignore it.
The idea in the heart of the novel is not original, we have seen it on the silver screen with “Sliding Doors, “The Butterfly Effect and even old “Groundhog day. Although the way it’s manifested in Troy’s Possibilities is quite unique:
Troy gets to live choices he had made as alternative routes for his life. The problem is that he can’t control it. In fact, in a sense it controls him: he could be living a full life of years and years, not knowing if it’s real life or a “possibility that will end with him blinking back to 2016, when he is in his early thirties. While it can be a blessing, Troy’s mentions numerous times that when you get this “do-over you cannot control what the other person does, so even if you do everything right, and the other person chose differently the future would be different. A good thing if the love of your life vanishes to Australia in a possibility; a bad thing if you are married to your high school sweetheart with a child and poof you are whisked back to your parents house when you’re fifteen, only now she doesn’t feel the same.
There’s one constant that seems to return to Troy’s existent, in whichever possibility he is, and that’s Cat. Is she for real? Is she part of a bigger scheme that the universe holds for Troy? Is she the sun for his moonlike measurable existence? And if so, why is it so darn complicated?
Again, I enjoyed “Troy’s Possibilities and the idea that stood behind it. It doesn’t lack problems though: at times I wasn’t sure whether the author himself got confused from what’s real and what was just a possibility, referring to things that should not have happened. Also, the multiple futures Troy had, in which he lived a full life weren’t convincing enough, at least not as much as the shorter scenarios that took hours or weeks. Moreover, while I was hooked in fully in the first third of the book, I felt like it lost momentum as the storyline dragged on, to a somewhat predictable ending.
Having said all the above I liked the clues that the author planted towards the conclusion, I liked the characters they were very complex and I could easily identified with Troy, and I liked the rich world of metaphors and language. “A thousand quips formed and died on my lips thinks the protagonist and I couldn’t identify more, being an aspiring author myself.
I also liked a cute recurring scene where Troy helps this old couple chose something, between the husband’s choice and the wife’s, I found it a playful way of demonstrating Troy’s problem that each “future can turn differently if one person chooses a bit differently.
For a debut novel, Strong has done a good job, and while it doesn’t lack issues it is a good read that will live you thinking. Hence why I decided to rate this book 4 stars, and to recommend it.

Wow, what a read! Troy's Possibilities is an immensely readable book, unlike any I've read before. The basic premise is that the main character- Troy, a twenty something bank worker from Wellington, New Zealand- is trapped in a situation where he lives out endless versions of his life, which he refers to as "possibilities". A Possibility could last minutes or a whole lifetime and during each one, Troy lives out his life, making choices, often having relationships and families, only to "blink" and find he is right back where he started and none of it had really happened. These Possibilities are interspersed with real life events as Troy tries to function in his day-to-day world, never quite knowing whether or not things are real. Having loved and lost many times over, Troy is more than reluctant to get emotionally attached to anyone, until he meets Cat. The resulting novel is one of the most unusual love stories you'll ever read.
I found the whole thing fascinating, although I suspect if it were real it would be a lot harder to slip back into real life, especially to continue with things that you hadn't done for years. I found myself imagining I was suddenly 15 again (the age Troy first experiences a Possibility) having thought I was much older. Just the basics of knowing what was going on in lessons at school, in conversations you'd been having, just knowing where to go would be completely beyond me. However, we'll allow the author artistic license on that one!
The narrative is exceptionally relaxed and easy to read, which it needs to be as some of the time shifts left me having to reread bits to work out where I was. The characters and events work well and are easy to identify with. I found the novel thoroughly absorbing and have recommended it to my 17 year old daughter, who is looking forward to starting it.
I have just two issues with Troy's Possibilities. Firstly (and I'm nitpicking a bit here), there are a lot of hugely negative life events- violent attacks, numerous premature deaths etc, involving Troys's friends and family. Obviously they don't all occur in the same Possibility but I'd be rather surprised if everyone I was close to turned out to be only a decision or two from a gruesome end. As a literary device, however, they work in a rather dramatic way to allow Troy to get his blossoming relationship wrong a few times in order to work out how to get it right (think Groundhog Day).
My second issue, and the reason I haven't given it 5 stars, is with the ending- which I won't spoil! However, it left an element of confusion in my mind that I wished wasn't there. In the last chapters, events fall into place which seems to resolve things for Troy and for the reader but the final roll of the dice stirs everything back up in a way I don't think the book needs and which I don't think works with the rest of the novel- ie there aren't significant pointers throughout the novel that would lead to this as an appropriate resolution.
Overall, Troy's Possibilities is a great read and one I will most likely be rereading in the future. The subject matter is unique and must have been difficult to write with cohesion but it works most of the time and I definitely recommend it.
“Troy's Possibilities: Nothing Is Straightforward When Anything Is Possible has you falling in and out of love with the main characters, turning back the pages to make sure you didn’t miss a thing, while shifting your Sherlock Holmes hat and reevaluating situations in your own life with a smile.
A very satisfying read. Relatable but flawed characters, an interesting plot that keeps you reading and a conclusion that still leaves me thinking. a book that really celebrates life in all its ups and downs and possibilities. Highly recommended. This book is worth taking the chance!
Wow. All I can say is wow. When I got this book, I was not expecting the epic tale that would I would be taking. I’m still sitting around just thinking about the whole book and having a difficult time writing this review.
Troy’s Possibilities is the story of Troy, a man in his early twenties working at a bank and spending his time with his flatmate Emily. He keeps to himself, no matter how Emily tries to push him out into the world to start living. But Troy is haunted. His life is interrupted by possibilities. These possibilities happen in the blink of an eye, Troy has lived hundreds of lives all with different outcomes. Troy is trapped by his ability and unable to really live life. Until Cat knocks on the front door and everything changes.
I really cannot express how much I really loved this book. It has so many good themes and elements. It was written beautifully and the story really flowed.
Troy’s Possibilities is a story about life. Troy has the ability to see how life MIGHT turn out. Unfortunately, it’s not the future. Each possibility is based on Troy’s decisions and the decisions of other people. He might save someone in one possibility, but in reality that person decided not to go to the same place Troy was. Life does have a lot to do with your own, personal decisions, but at the same time other people’s decisions affect you.
It’s a story about family. Because of everything Troy has seen, it negatively affects his relationship with his mother. Troy loves her so much, but he’s seen her suffer in so many possibilities. His dad has a hard time accepting this ability, and writes Troy off as mental. It’s sad to see his parental relationship crumble. Emily is Troy’s roommate and best friend since forever. She acts like a sister to him and tries to get him to live life.
It’s a story about love. Love has so many different possibilities. There are so many decisions and outcomes that could happen in a love story. But when you fall in love, it’s not only destiny, it’s also hope.
Troy’s Possibilities has filled my soul with hope. Definitely a book that has made me pause and reflect on all the possibilities not just in my past, but my future as well.
Thank you Book Gobbler and Rodney Strong for the ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Troy’s Possibilities is a truly captivating, humorous and thought provoking piece. I didn’t know what to expect when picking up the book, but quickly could not put it down.
The main character, Troy, really drew me in; his reflective nature, possible lives and lingering sadness, coupled with his sense of humour and striving-to-do-good nature takes you on a journey and sucks you into his world(s).
I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns throughout the book, hoping that this wasn’t Troy’s reality, but just another possibility. This journey took me through a range of emotions from laughing-out-loud to sadness and reflectiveness at the possibilities that Troy faces. The ending made me want to know more, and I can’t wait to read the see what happens with possible follow up book to Elissa and Troy or where another possibility may lead to.
I highly recommend this book and consider it would appeal to a range of age groups; young adult upwards.
Troy's Possibilities is truly one of those books you struggle to put down. Each chapter is so unique and rich that you can't help but keep turning the pages. I started reading the book one evening and didn’t put it down until read through to the end (about 3am!).
The story keeps you guessing about what will happen to and for Troy while comfortably weaving all the pieces together to take the reader on the same journey, never making what could easily be a confusing story anything but enjoyable.
Troy's Possibilities was outside of my general reading genre and unlike any book I have read before. I read it after recommendation from a close friend and have enthusiastically recommended it to family and friends since reading it.
Take a moment to enjoy the many possibilities of Troy's Possibilities - you won’t regret it!
I received this book as a good reads giveaway and thoroughly enjoyed it. A very interesting idea to base a story around and initially I found myself comparing the concept to the 'sliding doors' movie. It is something I have wondered about before so was intrigued to see how it would make sense as a story. Rodney Strong handled the jumping between 'possibilities' with ease and at no point was I confused with the narrative. Through Rodney's expert character descriptions I was able to identify with all the main characters and found the emotional turmoil Troy was experiencing to be artfully explained. A great first read of Rodney's work and I will definitely look out for more of his books.
It seams life really is like a box of chocolates, some and lovely and sweet and maybe some have been dropped in the dirt! Troy’s Possibilities is a great read and well written. It touches on many of lifes ups and downs, keeping you thinking long after you finish the book. The characters are real and relatable, leading you through many stories of what could have been. One minute it is funny and then suddenly heart wrenching and you just can’t put it down. The end of the book has so much turmoil and a few surprises cant wait for the sequel! (yes please Rodney Strong!)
I just read a devastatingly beautiful, tragic, wonderful and soul wrenching book. I’ve reread that last page 100 times just trying to dissect everything. Holy guacamole. I just.. NEED MORE ANSWERS. I haven’t read a lot of time travel books. I suppose this isn’t time travel in the sense you would automatically think of but it was wonderful writer and orchestrated. I was often left with whip lash and time changed and I really enjoyed that because it’s how the MC, Troy, felt. Fabulous. Amazing. Why is there not more? Can I travel back a few days just to experience this book again?
I really enjoyed this book, but please before you consider reading it, know that it deals with a traumatic sexual assault and its aftermath. This subject matter may not be suitable for some readers.
Also note, free-flowing profanity is used.
I enjoyed the characters, and the broken continuity was novel.
The last line in the book disappointed me, but I'll get over it. ;-)
A thought provoking book by first time author Rodney Strong, this book was an easy and enjoyable read with a surprising twist at the end. Definitely looking forward to what he does next.
I won this book through Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. Such a good premise, and it made you want to keep on reading. Did find it slightly confusing, changing from the diffferent possibilities, but just kept reading, and it all came together. Became invested in the different characters, and how their lives unfolded. Had humour, drama, and suspense, wondering how it was all going to turn out. Would definitely recommend it.
What a great read. This book will linger in your thoughts for days if not weeks after reading. The idea of 'possibilities' and how your life could turn out should you choose, or take a different path is a real concept I'm sure most of us have thought about. This book takes us down this journey. Hard to put down, and hard to forget. Rodney has done a fantastic job of bringing the reader along this exhaustive and emotive path of endless possibilities.
This book was great. A real grabbing read. The character of Troy never really knows if the life he is living is his or one that could have been possible......but in nearly every life/possibility he finds one girl.....Cat. At first he's confused but then starts to feel that she's there for a reason.
This book is unlike anything I've ever read before so I had no idea whether I was going to like it or not. My 24 year old son who never reads had just finished it and kept asking me if id started it yet. I actually found myself drawn to the characters from the beginning and as I progressed through the book I started thinking about the progression of my own life and the possible ' What if's' we could have encountered along the way if we'd chosrn to pursue them. A very enjoyable read and i commend the author who got my son to pick up a book AND actually read it 😀
By now you have already read the premise. I am here to tell you that it works and is brilliantly executed, a page tuner of the highest order. Very rarely does a book surprise me. There seems to be nothing new being written, just a lot of mundane variations of what has already been written. I was surprised and left wondering at every turn, dying to find out the conclusion of every segment, every "possibility" presented, guessing if the current chapter will turn out to be real life or another possibility. Above all, this is an amazing love story and extremely rich with emotion. I kept thinking the whole time I was reading, who is this Rodney Strong and how is it possible that this is a debut novel? I hope we will be seeing a lot more from this author.
I won this book in a giveaway and couldn't put it down. The character development is great and I got attached to all the characters and their flaws. As the title says "Nothing is Straightforward When Anything is Possible. Every time Troy blinks, he's in another "possible life", never knowing for sure which one is going to actually become true. When I had to put it down to sleep, I couldn't stop thinking about it and where the book might be taking me. When I woke up, I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. Great Read.
Troy's Possibilities takes the reader on a thought-provoking journey through the life of Troy Messer, a man destined to live many lives, never knowing whether his current experience is grounded in reality or a fictional trip to a destination he'll never reach.
His lives lead him to experience great joys, but also depths of sadness as he repeatedly witnesses many of life’s traumas and sees the relationship he forms stripped from him in the literal blink of an eye.
Conceptually, it is a challenging storyline to maintain; there are many twists throughout, and Rodney Strong does a great job of pacing and steering the narrative to keep the reader engaged. Troy’s Possibilities conveys a novel concept which kept me turning the pages until the story’s evocative conclusion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel and I’m encouraged to buy his next book, Murder in Paint, to see where his imagination will lead.
This book is so different from anything I've read. It's not exactly a time travel story, as Troy experiences many different outcomes of the same life. Each time he wakes up, he could be in a different life. Soe of them last 30 seconds, some 30 years. He experiences many heartbreaks.
However, it is not a downer story, but more of a hopeful story, especially after he discovers a woman he calls Cat, who suddenly seems to be a constant in all of his lives.
This is a thought-provoking, mind-stretching novel. I am surprised it is a first novel. It's such a great idea, and the author is a wonderful writer. I look forward to reading more of his work.
