A gripping political thriller set over two weeks in the aftermath of Brexit, Javelin will not disappoint fans of Detective Chief Inspector John Kerr.
Two explosions in Victoria mark the beginning of a bombing campaign against banking institutions in London. The attacks bear the hallmarks of Irish republican dissidents but are disowned by IRA volunteers and politicians in Belfast.
Kerr believes the bombs are the work of the extremist group Anti-Capitalist Insurrection, with attacks in London the first stage of a devastatingly deadly campaign across Europe...can Kerr stop them in time?
The author certainly has the credentials to deliver an authentic modern thriller. Roger Pearce was the former Commander of Special Branch at New Scotland Yard, as well as Director of Intelligence, charged with heading covert operations against serious and organised criminals.
The book is well written and easy to read. It rocks along at quite a pace and captures modern London well, especially away from the tourist spots favoured by many writers.
Although the 3rd book featuring John Kerr the book can be read as a standalone, but does make me want to follow his further adventures.
My thanks go to NetGalley and the Publisher for the chance to read an advance copy of this book.

This is the 3rd book from Roger Pearce with a gap of almost 4 years from his last book. And I am surprised that after 4 years, a brilliant budding novelist changes into an average, confused, run-of-the-mill boring novelist. For a change, I had to be very motivated to continue reading through the first 75-100 odd pages as it was not inspiring at all and to top it all, very difficult language fluency to read and understand easily for a person whose not spent all there life in England or not into cop-jargon. And I kept reprimanded myself thinking the fault lies with me as I loved his previous two novels. But the fact is, the plot of this book is also quite lukewarm, hence it couldn't be transformed into a hot selling novel.
Book starts in a fast pace, several bombings in London, blowing up banks and people near UG stations. One of the casualty is Alan Fargo's family (mother and sister) who is part of the Intelligence squad working for John Kerr. All these bombings have the signature of the ex-IRA (The Real IRA) which creates a make believe that the IRA terrorists are back and targeting London. The chase thus begins and John Kerr and his team gets into the action of finding out who is behind these attacks and bombings.
Not much twists involved, John's team and his under cover agents unravel the mystery to be a plot closer to home and quite personal for John Kerr, the IRA no where in the picture. On the whole, an average book, maybe 2.5/5 stars. I don't think I would be motivated to pick another Roger Pearce book up, unless he starts writing in more generic language and goes back to his old style and genre.
This is the third book from this, author and I've read all three in order. First of all , I absolutely loved the main character from all three and the robust relationship he has with his Officers. The care and protection of each other is so obvious and its the glue in the trilogy. I raced through this book. It's full of twists and turns and expect the unexpected because there's lots in this book. It's set apart from other books in this genre by the author have the extensive experiences in his previous Professional life which he brings to the fore throughout. Highly recommended.
Great. Very complicated plot with multiple threads - slightly tricky to follow all the various characters initially but it became clearer as it went along. Fascinating how all the strands started to come together as the story progressed and finally all joined up at the conclusion. A page turner but sad to reflect that the story probably reflects, at least in part, the authors expert experience of real life and how badly some elements of society behave - most of which the public never hear about. I thought it was a good read.
This writer knows his stuff and makes use of all his anti-terrorism knowledge. The story cracks on at a fast pace and it was very difficult to keep up. There are so many characters it would have been helpful to have a who's who at the beginning of the book. That said I did finish it, as the plot was intriguing and hard to work out. Adventure story for boys.
The plot itself was interesting but complicated. It got lost beneath a lot of characters and a lot of security service abbreviations. As the book progressed it became difficult to follow and connect with certain characters. I found I had to keep flicking back to recall who was who, which became distracting in itself. There seemed to be a lot of unnecessary content that only added to the complexity of it all. It would otherwise have been a gripping read.
This is how it is. The factual life of those who protect us and the problems they have to put up with. Fabulous stories from the even thinner blue line. Read and be envious.
Excellent, fast paced, realistic makes the reader understand the pressure our terrorist services work under and how they are hampered by the interference of the "P/C Brigade"
Obvious that the author has experience of what he is writing about which makes the story believable "James Bond this is not"
Fast paced thriller with plenty of action, as well as a good substantial story, which makes you want to keep turning the pages in anticipation. Spot on.
Great read complex storyline. I had difficulty keeping up with the characters. Real name and nicknames confused me at times. On the whole fast moving, complex story
Read the first ones and loved the characters so this had to be good. Did not disappoint and tied up a few loos ends from the others. Highly recommended for a spy/detective novel with an up to date plot and areas of London I am familiar with so very believable all round. Loved it and can't wait for the next Kerr episode.
