We got 22 pages.
Let me deconstruct what I can after reading consuming those 22 pages in around 22 seconds.

It's fair to say that I am pretty much already sold on Nicholas and Seiji.

HI HELLO, PLEASE 'READ ME LOUD AND QUEER'

The artwork is mouth-watering. I shit you not, Johanna the Mad has mad skills. The atmosphere that the artwork added in itself was beautiful enough to carry on the story.
The only reason this is getting 3 stars, is I feel like it could have had more substance in it.

I know we are getting the sequel next month, December

But I still felt, like if I gave this anymore than 3 stars it would be a bias on the author and the artist, not on the story itself. Like a true reviewer, I would like to see how the rest of the story pans out and if it holds up to its greatness.

I really hope it makes us all burst.

Meet the Characters
description
From Left to Right: Nicholas, Seiji, Harvard, Aiden, Jesse, Dante and Bobby

What we know so far:

Nicholas: "The main character is Nicholas. He’s sort of talented but roughly trained, he has the potential to be a world-class fencer but only if he can learn discipline and control. Unknown to everyone else in the comic, he's the illegitimate son of U.S. fencing Olympic champion Robert Coste.
Nicholas grew up in tough conditions and gets in trouble a lot. He’s often in detention but he loves fencing. He's drawn to it out of a kind of yearning for his father."

Jesse: Nicholas' half brother. "Robert’s legitimate son, and fencing golden boy Jesse. Those two guys have never met before."

"As a result of Nicholas' passion, he gets a scholarship to an elite boys school called Kings Row where he's a fish out of water initially. But he learns to make friends and improve along the way."

Seiji: The other main character. "The best fencer on the team Japanese. Seiji is like a young fencing prodigy. He’s 16 years old and he's been training since the age of 6. All the other fencers either want to be him or beat him. But because of his talent, he's somewhat isolated. He spends his time with adult fencers or with coaches. Until he meets Nicholas he's lived quite an isolated life that's only about fencing and winning."

The supporting cast.

Aiden: "The mean playboy with a heart of gold"
Harvard: "The goodhearted team captain"
Coach Sally: "a former Olympic fencer in sabre, her lifelong rival in sabre, Alessandra, is coach of the rival team school."

So Nicholas and Seiji will be facing off against their coach’s greatest rival and her team throughout the series.

Rereading this in 2020 and realizing I still know way more lines by heart that it would be considered healthy or cool or even remotely acceptable? More likely than you think

____
⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️ full review now posted!!!

This review has a title and it's GET. THIS. COMIC. NOW.

If you've ever read or watched any sports manga or anime, this is a comic for you. If you're lgbt+, this is for you.

Plot:
Fence follows Nicholas Cox in his dream of making it into the fencing world. His passion is driven by more than just the love for the sport, and this is what helps the reader sympathize with him even if fencing is something completely new to them (like it is for me).

Nicholas is only sixteen but he worked hard for the chance to be taught to fence, and when he finally enters his first tournament he’s introduced to other fencers apparently for the first time. Among them is Seiji Katayama, whom everyone else seems to fear, and for a reason.

Their first encounter leaves Nicholas even more determined to finally enter a fencing school where he can be properly taught, because raw talent won’t get him anywhere. Six months later, he’s shown on his first day at Kings Row, a boys school he’s only able to attend thanks to a scholarship that depends on his making the fencing team, and a surprise is waiting for him there.

Characters:
Nicholas is a very determined character, who will do whatever it takes to achieve his dream. His struggles are relatable and real and they stick with the reader. Even in just around twenty pages it’s impossible not to care about him, also thanks to a couple of flashbacks.

Seiji is quite frankly an asshole so far and I can only love him for it. This is C.S. Pacat we’re talking about, so I’m expecting a hell of a backstory regarding the hard work that got Seiji to be where he is now.

In general:
This a very Japanese-like first issue of a comic that will (hopefully!!!) lead us on a long journey into the fencing world and the main characters' relationships. It sets the tone for the rest of the series: tension, humor, diversity and queerness.

When it comes to diversity, it’s already very promising even just by looking at the background characters, and even though we still haven’t met them all on the page, we already know from the previews of all the main characters that they’re all diverse and unique.

The queerness isn’t strong in this one yet, but that’s perfect. Think of all your favorite sports comics/anime. I’m thinking Check, Please! and Yuri!!! On Ice. The queerness is just there and it’s just another part of the characters lives, just like the sport they love is. These are the kind of queer stories I love to read, and that’s why Fence will appeal to all LGBT+ readers. It promises a broad spectrum of sexualities and gender identities, paired with diversity and a story about passion that we can all identify ourselves with. Its very existence challenges a world of male white allocishetism, as a comic written by a queer and genderqueer person and drawn by a Mexican artist, who have put pieces of themselves into it.

I definitely cannot wait for the next issue to come out and I’m loving how big of a reach this already seems to have. Definitely get on it if you were hesitant because of its hype: the hype was real and it was 100% justified.

description

Particularly I want to talk about the importance it will have in the queer community. I fully believe that the comparison with Yuri!!! On Ice and other queer-positive works like is 100% accurate.

Why am I saying this with such confidence when I obviously haven't read it yet, since it comes out in November? Two reasons:

I fully trust to stay true to her words and deliver
"something that's very joyously and unabashedly queer. That's very important to me."

Knowing her and knowing her previous work and the other fictional works (like Y!!!OI) that she enjoys, I know that she isn't just saying that in order to appeal to a certain audience. This is something that might have been scary to publish one year ago, when the queer world hadn't been quite literally shaken by Yuri!!! On Ice yet. But now we know that the (queer and not queer) world is ready for something that doesn't have to justify itself in order to exist. Not only won't there be any queerbaiting, there won't be "sad gays" either.

This premise brings me to my second point. A comic is something that will appeal to readers and non-readers alike. We in the bookish community sometimes tend to forget that there are many people who don't read as much as we do, and that's fine. Many of those people are teens that maybe are more into anime and manga, and they'll be given access to something that might -might!- eventually draw them into the bookish world. Even more importantly, these are young people who more often than not are just coming to terms with their sexuality. These are teens and young adults who have been at best queerbaited by shows like Free! and Haikyuu!!, and at worse they've been shown that if you're queer you are someone expendable, someone who will die before the straights can find a solution to a zombie-riddled world or you're simply there to allow a straight narrative to reach its positive outcome, or you're there to be the gay stereotype that the audience will laugh at.
This won't happen with . (Young) people will have a positive queer representation like they've had in Yuri!!! On Ice, and being queer won't be the main subject of the work. They'll be shown that you don't have to only be your sexuality, you can be an athlete, you can be anything and be queer and be valid and if you don't understand the importance of that then maybe it's really time for you to think about your straight privilege.

Now, focusing on the rest of what we know so far, this story will have amazing characterization. Again, you ask, how do you know this? Because that's what Pacat does. And if you haven't read and you don't trust me on my word, read this:
I'm working with a really great épée coach in Australia to choreograph all the fight scenes. And I've been working with him on the fencing characterization of each boy, so they'll all have different strengths and weaknesses that will evolve throughout the narrative.

...in “Fence, especially because I was so invested in the accuracy of the fencing, there’s no smudging allowed.

These are NOT the words of someone who doesn't think their characters through. The characters' personalities will reflect in the way they fence and act outside of fencing, like in all the best sports anime/manga/fiction.

This is already so clear from just a raw of one page alone
description

"But will it be diverse?" you ask. Yeah!
...having a diverse cast was very important to me. When you're writing heroic narratives it's very important to make sure that you have a story where everyone can feel as though they can be a hero.

Because this is a comic, obviously another really important thing to look forward to is the art. is an amazing artist (see pictures above) who has more than once impressed me (and many others, including C.S. Pacat) with her art.

Something else I find amazing is that both writer and artist come from the online world. They not only know the community they're addressing, they're fully part of it and that is one more reason to trust them.

So really the question is, what's there NOT to look forward to? (the answer is: everything about this comic should make you as excited as I am)

And more importantly, is it November yet?

P.S.: You can

⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔
I love gay fencing and I love CS Pacat and I love Johanna the Mad and I've been screaming since this comic was announced.

What I'm most happy about is that Pacat will finally have a chance to be known by a broader and different audience (given the many trigger warnings for Captive Prince, which won't be present here).

I just know that it'll be amazing and I can't wait for November! ❤⚔

”I’m going to beat you fifteen-zero

Woah Seji is such an arrogant douchebag. Well, and Nick? He’s obviously the underdog and needs some serious anger management

In short: I already love them both! *LOL*

Considering I haven’t read a comic ever since I was a teenager (I’ll leave it up to you to do the maths! ;-P) this actually was a pretty nice start.
Guess this is going to be one of those from enemy to lovers kinda story, and I’m so here for it! XD

Bring on the hatred and passion!!! <333
I dig it! *lol*

Fencing is a sport of champions. You step onto the piste full of hopes and dreams. Sometimes you win. And sometimes...you’re just a stepping stone on someone else’s rise to success.

So let’s make something clear: comics are not a “me thing—I want them to be, I’ve been itching to dive into the sequential arts on my TBR, but to be honest the only ones I’ve read yet are Hergé’s classic Tintin series which, frankly, I adore (and yes I’m an old soul). My nonsensical 2020 reading challenge with its 202 books finally gave me the push I needed to dig in and so here I am, picking up this series on a whim and with no expectations...and I am pleased to say I’m satisfied! Also yes, I’m reviewing all the issues just because I can.

Meet Nicholas Cox, the smol bean of a dreamer who has no one and nothing, the poor petulant baby who wants to follow the footsteps of a father he never knew, the angry underdog who is an unstoppable force of nature and doesn’t know what it is to back down.

But his confidence and boldness are gonna be dosed in ice water because he’s up against Seiji Katayama. Of course, the clueless cinnamon roll he is has no idea who Seiji even is.

Meet Seiji Katayama, the second best under 16s épée fencer in the country and also an arrogant shetbag who can kindly go eat shet. As you can tell, they hit it off really well (yes I spy with my little eye, an enemies-to-lovers gay romance on the horizon) and the rest is, of course, history.

I absolutely enjoyed this cute little issue. The storytelling technique was chef’s kiss, the art was wholly captivating, and the humour and witty writing provided the perfect icing on the cake. I admire how, in only a few pages, Pacat made me feel for Nicholas with that heartbreakingly told backstory and immediately root for him. It was too short, and not much happened, but I am invested guys, and that is a miracle!

I was really hesitant to read a sports-centered story because I have a history of getting bored during them, and although this book wasn't the *most* interesting because it did have to explain a lot about fencing, I found I really enjoyed it and cannot wait for volume 2! The set-up of the conflict and emotional angst and camaraderie between the two main characters was aggravating yet addicting, and I can't wait until we get an issue that further explore Nicholas's backstory because he really intrigues me as a main character. The art in this is like Alex + Ada where it's simplistic and realistic, therefore easy to follow, which I tend to prefer.

I wish this would've contained more volumes because it almost feels like there was no storyline and it was just a set-up for what's to come, but still, I read it in one sitting and it was very enjoyable and had me gasping out loud at the progression of the plot, so I'm eager to keep reading!

I love this comics. In fact, I really really love this comics. Heck, I’d read anything writes. And here comes the “but. 😁

But the thing is, the comics is really really short. It’s merely a chapter. I don’t mind the price point given it’s Pacat’s work and the quality of the art is amazing. However, I really want more. Read this comics book in 10 mins and that .. that I was savoring. 😆

This is only the introduction of two MCs and that’s it. Will they become enemies, frenemies? Or enemies to lovers like Damen & Laurent? Who knows? The only thing I know is I want the next book ASAP!!! 😭😭😭

I LOVE sports anime (YURI ON ICE LORD JESUS PLS, also Haikyuu!! and Hanebado!) so I was super looking forward to this one. I loved the m/m themes and relationships. The author employed some typical sports manga tropes, namely the underdog story, but I love a good underdog story and learning more about fencing.

There are characters of all races and a character that defies stereotypical gender expression. The overachieving East Asian stereotype was used; however it’s not that stereotypes are bad or untrue. It’s just that they don’t allow readers to see a large range of stories (Cue: mention of my favorite Ted Talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie called The Danger of a Single Story), so I may have liked to see another role for the East Asian character.

Very enjoyable and I already put the second volume on hold!

Hello, if you aren't eagerly following this new series then you should be!!!

The first issue of Fence introduces sixteen-year-old Nicholas Cox, a young athlete with hopes of making it in the cutthroat world of competitive fencing. He’s devoted to the sport despite his limited training, and when he finally enters his first competition he finds himself facing off against renowned prodigy Seiji Katayama.

We’ve only been introduced to a handful of characters so far, but I can NOT wait to learn more about them!! I’m honestly not usually into sports-based books or shows, but I’m a sucker for anything with great character development and it seems like this series will deliver on that count. It’s also been promised that Fence will be “joyously and unabashedly queer, and I am HERE for this content.

Also, I want to include a shoutout and thank you to Silvia, for hyping this up on twitter and converting me into a fan. 💕

Overall, I loved both the art and the writing, and I can’t wait to see where the next installment takes this story!

Having Pacat’s name attached to this made it an instant pre-order purchase for me. My hard copy (finally) arrived in the mail today and I immediately halted my regular activities to devour this first volume in quick order.

Yes, it is super short, but I don’t really care; where Pacat is concerned, I’ll take what I can get, whenever I can get it.

I’m already intrigued by the main characters, Nicholas and Seiji. They have a frenemies vibe working for them already and we all know how well Pacat’s last enemies-to-lovers venture turned out. *happy sigh*

I’ll admit, I know next to nothing about the art of fencing; it’s a sport that completely eludes me, but I’m sure reading this series will work to quickly expand my understanding.

This is also my first encounter with artist Johanna the Mad. Nevertheless, it only took the turn of the first page to know her illustrations were going to be gorgeous and mesmeric and much to my liking.

In other reviews readers have made comparisons to anime shows like Yuri on Ice or books like , and I absolutely agree. If you enjoyed one or both of those, I’m pretty sure you’ll be into this, too. (And if you haven’t watched or read either of those, GO DO IT!!!!... After you finish this, of course).

So far, Pacat’s compelling story and Johanna’s beautiful artwork seem to work in perfect unison and I eagerly look forward to consuming the next installment upon release.

This was everything I wanted???

I'm getting such strong vibes similar to Yuri On Ice, Haikyuu!! and The Foxhole Court, all my faves.

It's a very entertaining issue and a great start to the story! We got introduced to the cast and I love Nicholas already!!! Seiji is wow. No words.

I guess I care about fencing now??, who would've guessed.

Johanna the Mad and Joana Lafuente have done a tremendous work, the illustrations look beautiful and characters' design is amazing!

It's my first time reading a comic issue by issue, so the waiting till December is going to be painful.

5/5! will reread multiple times.

¡ME ENCANTA!

"Fencing is a sport of champions. You step onto the piste full of hopes and dreams. Sometimes you win. And sometimes... you're the stepping stone on some else's rise to success."

What a fun, short little ride!

I'm actually really impressed right now because even though it was not even 30 pages long it made me feel something, brought me close to tears and gave me hope and want for the MC to rise and win and achieve his dreams. That's something that even some books don't get right and the fact that C. S. Pacat did it in less than 50 pages is impressive.

As far as a first issue goes is really well done. It presents to you the stakes, reasons and some backstory in a really straightforward and believable way, placing every piece carefully and neatly.

The art is beautiful and expressive, which is really important in a comic.

I just want to know what was the deal with that guy at the end.
______________________

I've heard so much about this comic and I decided to give it a try.

I've got little to no idea what's this about aside from the very obvious fact that fencing is a big part of the comic. And well, who the author is that, though, I've never read any of her books I have heard really good things about all of them.

From the little I've seen of the art I already know I'm gonna love it. And, since this is a comic, the art is a really important part of the experience. Whenever I don't like the art of a comic I feel like that really takes away a lot of my enjoyment and appreciation of the work. I may like the story but if I don't like the art then is a lot of a done deal.

I'm between sad and happy that the issues are so short, but right this second I'm leaning towards happy.

Ohhh I really enjoyed this! This is super nice, what a tight little graphic novel. This comic has been getting a lot of attention on my twitter timeline lately, and I was interested because I uhhh, love sport romances.

Fence is a sport graphic novel series about a boy called Nicholas who is beaten 15-0 in a fencing tournament by renowned champion Seiji and now he wants revenge. I believee it may also be an m/m enemies to lovers romance later down the track.

The art is nice, I love the look of it all and I think the way the characters are drawn is really cute. Also ummm no offence but every person in this is a beautiful person every single boy is so pretty. But I do have one art issue and that is that the characters don't always look consistently drawn? Like honestly

Seiji here,

and here

doesn't look anything like Seiji here

and for me, thats confusing.

But anyway, this was still really cool! Kinda reminds me of The Foxhole Court but with less dramatic shit and more serious sporting. The characters weren't given much depth this issue so I'm hoping for more in the upcoming ones. I definitely am liking how the series is looking to be set up. It's a series I plan on continuing

★★★★ 5 Stars!

Where do I start with this? I find it incredibly challenging to rate graphic novels or comics as it’s a genre that I’m new to and only just exploring. What I will say is I’m definitely intrigued. Like I think I am already strongly addicted!

CHARACTERS:

1.) Nicholas Cox: He is our main character and unlike a lot of his fellow peers he doesn’t come from money. He also doesn’t have a lot of training and comes from a world that others feel makes him below them. This causes him to be an outsider. I truly felt for his character in the few pages that I have known him and I can’t wait to read more of his story. He also seems to have slight anger issues and doesn’t back down from a fight. I love me a feisty/sassy character.

2.) Seiji Katatama: This guy is a douchebag, Jerk, Asshole... I could go on! But I can see that he will have loads of character growth and I can’t wait!

ART:

I find the art style nice. Like I said, I’m not an expert with comics or graphic novels so I’m no means an expert but I liked it. I found it easy to follow the story as well.

P.S. IF THIS DOESN’T HAVE THE ENEMIES TO LOVERS TROPE I MAY CRY!!!

I'm very new to the sequential art game. The two that I have read have been finished or almost finished and have taken me at least a couple of days to read. So this was a very strange experience for me, especially given how excited I was for it.

content
The story so far is pretty intriguing, though there's not much to it other than what is mentioned in the synopsis. Essentially, new amateur to the fencing world takes on a famous fencer in a regional competition. We get a little bit of a backstory, mostly through imagery/background art of the panels and it was all very well done. I'm definitely interested in knowing more about Nicholas' life. And of course, we get a little cliff hanger.

Also: how it possible to already feel sexual tension in such a short lil book? Pacat is a genius.

art
It was absolutely gorgeous. I'm by no means a professional sequential art reader but this is definitely the best art I've read/looked at so far. The emotion on the faces was so nuanced, the panels very well thought out, and the use and nonuse of words to accompany panels was perfect (sometimes I find that too much or too little text can take away from the overall story).

I really do think you should all buy this... but maybe wait and buy it once the second one comes out as well? Might just be my sad, quick reading heart talking. But anyway, Pacat didn't disappoint.

3.5.

This was something like all for the game/check, please! crossover but with fencing. I’m actually convinced that the mc’s real name is not Nicholas Cox at all but Neil Josten. His nemesis name is Seiji Katayama, I mean? Did you spell Riko Moriyama wrong or? Anyways, we’ll see where it goes.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS. It feels so much like a sports anime it's uncanny.

BUT WHY WAS IT SO SHORT?? I SWEAR I FINISHED IT IN 15 MINUTES LIKE WHYYYYYYYYYYYY. I NEED MORE!!

To be fair, it is a comic, and I know they run differently from novels, but still, it was a tad disappointing that it was so short. I'm curious to know what will happen next!

The art is beautiful, the characters are intriguing, and the storyline is just heating up! I can't wait to see where this story goes in volume 2!

Time to go order the next volume!!!

Before Reading:

It's (almost) here, it's queer, and I need it in my life RIGHT NOW!!!

I mean this sincerely when I say that C.S. Pacat is one of my all-time favorite authors, and I will read anything she publishes!! Also this is giving me serious sports anime vibes XD I CANT WAIT!
