Picked this up to read the first novella, "Raise the Red Lantern," after seeing a clip of the film with the same name. The protagonist is an educated young woman who is sold as a concubine and subsequently driven mad by her new living arrangement. The movie depicts a girl distraught by her marital night; however, the book presents concubinage through the eyes of an aroused male. Lotus is a sexually charged character who seems to enjoy her relations with her husband, whom she shares with three other women. No indication is giving that she's a girl being raped by the man who bought her, making her descent into madness difficult to reconcile.

Whilst Su Tong's novellas will be easily forgotten once read, there's something very hypnotic about his writing style which make his stories compulsive reading. It's very much like sitting down and listening to your grandparents telling stories about their past, at times disjointed, but always coming together and conveying the most important elements of plot and character. The three tales that Su Tong tells in this way, become alive in the reader's mind.

Of course particular credit has to be given to the novella 'Raise the Red Lantern', inspiring the award winning film of the same name. This story is told wonderfully, the different characters come alive in the reader's mind, and you find yourself emotionally involved in the affairs concerning fourth concubine, Lotus, as she slips into insanity. All of her anger and her frustrations are passionately described, in a way that the reader feels the struggles of what she is having to go through, and why at times, she strives to put on a face to show her gratitude for being accepted into a wealthy family, whilst she equally recognises her exploitation as a concubine and contemplates death.

The Opium Family and Nineteen Thirty Four Escapes are likewise, brutally vivid stories about the struggles of the poor, and how family life is torn apart. Fantastically told and depicted so vividly, they are hard stories to put down and return from 1930s China, to reality.

Epouses et Concubines.
By Su Tong (Born 1963)

The story is set in Northern China in the early twentieth century.

The wealthy Chinese patriarch Chen Zuoquian compensates his waning sexual performances by marrying ever younger candidates.

He is at wife number four with beautiful 20-year-old student Songlian. All is well at the beginning, but soon her attraction also wanes.

The older wives know how to handle the ageing husband, and soon the rivalry and jealousy turn to their advantage.

Wife number three, a beautiful former opera singer, is spied out and caught with a lover.
She will be treated for treason with the traditional cruellest punishment.

Young Songlian is terrified. She can see her life wasted before it even started, and alone with no hope for help from anyone.

Or is there?

This short novel reminds me of the great “Tale of Genji” but in a shortened and simplified version.

Another OMG read. While I loved "Raise the Red Lantern," "Nineteen Thirty-Four Escapes" was just as powerful. All three of these stories are beyond excellent, showcasing Su Tong's beautiful and eerie writing. Much more soon. Must recover from the holiday first.

I initially bought this book because I'd seen the movie Raise the Red Latern and was intrigued to see whether the book was the same. In fact, the book differs somewhat, and in some ways I liked the differences, but the book made me think that the author was misogynostic. Although it is clear from the text (and history) that the women had no choice in becoming concubines, there seemed to be no sympathy for these women. Each was presented in a consistently bad light, especially in relation to the men in the story. Though the text shows that Lotus had little choice in sinking to virtual prostitution, there was little other discussion of the situation, a huges hole in the story to my way of thinking.

The two other novellas have the same kind of treatment of the women in the stories. Though there is lip service paid to the fact that they are poverty stricken and the men hold all the power, there is no sympathy for them. They are pawns, expendible and unloveable.

Several times in Raise the Red Latern one of the male characters says that he's afraid of women -- I suspect the author was speaking from his heart here and that his fear of women carries itself over into his fiction where he can demean and mistreat his female characters.

It's a poorly kept secret that I am a sucker for any mournful, bittersweet historic Chinese novel about the oppressive cultural struggles of strong, female protagonists. This is the third one of these in a row for me and I might call it the best so far in this sub-genre. So sad, so bittersweet, so painfully beautiful. How could anyone resist?

This novel has changed my view over Feminism and Female Empowerment. In short words, it made me realise the ones we must fight against more fiercely to become fully independet is, paradoxally, ourselves as a class. Women have always been, and continue up to today, to constitute, our worst enemies. Alllow me to elaborate, if you will.

China, 1930's. Mao hasn't rised yet and the country remains more similar to feudalism than modern XXth Century would suggest. Wealthy men can have one official wife but as many concubines as they wish, choices for women are very narrowed and most of the people has no access to formal education, therefore few citizens know how to read. This information will be important to the plot development at some point, so save it. Uneducated peasants and servants treated almost as slaves with no laboral laws and (heavily ignorant traditions) constitute most of the chinese population.

Lotus is a young adult girl in college whose father has commited suicide after going bankrupt. Lotus has a fork on the road in front of her: she can either marry and be supported by her husband or work to support herself. Unlike many average chinese folks, she is able to actually chose a path, nevertheless, rather na?vely, she choses the worst option avaliable: to become the fourth wife (or third concubine, as you wish) of a wealthy and much older man. What was she thinking, that she would be taken care of by a sugar daddy and live happily even after ruling the servants, being spoilt and massaged as if in a spa and treated with tenderness and support by the other wives as with her mother and aunties? Poor Lotus. Her failure to understand the dynamics of the social system will cost her dearly.

Introduced to her Master/husband and his wives, Lotus is bewildered by their contrasting behaviour. The Master is imperious and capricious, the first wife (Joy) is magnanimous (after all, she is the legitimate spouse), the second wife is apparently nice but cunning/passive aggressive and the third wife is openly adamant, competitive and unsympathetic, clearly unhappy with the loss of status the acquisition of a younger wife implies. The servants, Lotus quickly realises, will only pay respects and attention on the specific days the Master spends the night in her chambers. As for the others, she is helped by a servant clearly dismissive of hers.

There is a symbolic relevance within the names of the characters, as they contain both the qualities and fates of those they belong to. Lotus means spirituality, pureness and female perfection, the first wife is named Joy, after all, she is the most fortunate one, the second wife's name is Cloud, implying her deceitful nature, the third wife is Coral, beautiful though hard to handle and last but not least, Lotus' servant is called Swallow.

Swallow is very envious of Lotus' position as an educated, well bred and, most importantly, able to become a wife woman. She is clearly in love with the Master and plots against Lotus with Cloud. One day, when Lotus discovers a type of vodoo spell against her and guesses Swallow could not have done it by herself (once she is clearly illiterate), she uncovers Cloud as her equally envious enemy. Possessed by passionate hatred, Lotus forces the servant to swallow dirty toilet paper and cuts off a piece of the ear of Cloud, who storms off, revealing her true self while in pain. Way to go, Lotus, surrender to the Dark Side, embrace the darkness and enforce the patriarchy! #NotSoMuch

However, the passionate revenge against Cloud bring an unexpected ally: Coral, who approaches Lotus in complimentary attitude. Unfortunately, Coral is much more subversive than Lotus, as she is lovers with the family doctor, drinks alcohol and plays majongue at night, instead of submissively waiting for the Master to attend to her chambers. Also, Lotus becomes estranded of the husband once she falls in love with Joy's son, much closer to her both in age and educational level. Unfortunaly, the young master is unable to reciprocate her affections, leaving her sexually frustrated and intellectually bored. Lotus' inability to manage the domestic situation strenghtens the second wife, as Cloud reads situations much more easily and schemes accordingly.

Coral is finally caught cheating the Master, being condenmed to death (according to ancient traditions) and thrown into a haunting well. Her fate is being deeply confined into dark waters, as hinted by her name. Witnessing Coral's murder drives Lotus insane, removing her from the domestic meaness and delivering her to the pronounced destiny of idealistic perfection and pureness. Once mad, Lotus is restored to her original state of childish innocence, as her name suggests.

So, what is the Feminist message of this novel? Don't fight other women - when you tear down a fellow sister, you bring destruction upon yourself. What is the Female Empowerment solution? I don't know. What is the most relevant assertment? Patriarchy feeds on women rivalty, ignorance and male supremacy based on traditions rather than Education. It saddens me to realise how little our world has changed since then.

Beautifully written novellas that symbolizes the brutality and repression of Chinese history at the turn of the 20th Century. Su Tong's three novellas speak on the surface of gender and sexual repression, but underneath that layer it is brilliant and brutal humanization of a culture that has repressed itself for centuries.

While "Raise the Red Lantern" carries the title of this collection, "Opium Family" is my favorite novella of the three. It reminds me a lot of Anton Chekov's "The Cherry Orchard," in that it is the story of a family tied to a quasi-feudal power structure and its last gasping moments before sweeping cultural changes and how it deals with the loss of its identity. It is a complex tale of repressed sexuality and power. It is a brilliant pience that lacks the cinematic appeal of "Raise the Red Lantern," but a tour de force.
